INTRODUCTION & FAQ

- This free encyclopedia is intended to provide the required basic skills and tools for new users to start flashing/modding, but XDA-developers is a developing devoted site, not a support hotline
- There's no "easy way" or "universal guide" to learn how to flash SPLs, RADIOs or ROMs (ROM = firmware = operating system "OS") A lot of READING, SEARCHING and LEARNING is required before asking/posting new threads demanding previously answered questions
- This library is NOT related in any way to Sony Ericsson; no tech support for SEUS here
- Flashing ROMs has NOTHING TO DO with CID or SIM-unlock... wrong place to ask about that
- Questions like "which ROM shuold I flash" or "what's the better one" have no answer; it depends on your own requirements/preferences; read every "cooker"s (ROM builder) thread to learn what's included into each custom ROM and decide for yourself
- Most files here are zipped with WinRAR (http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm) to save space and faster download
- If you still want to do it yourself, welcome! All you need to know is here; enjoy and happy flashing for those who are willing to read and learn :)

I - TUTORIALS & LEARNING RESOURCES

- "Flash" = copy a file into the device read-only memory (ROM)
- Types of ROMs: SPL roms, firmware ROMs & transmitter RADIO roms. Original stock ROMs often include all three
- All ROMs are flashed with *.nbh extension. Some stock ROMs come as *.image and must be renamed to *.nbh first
- Ways to flash: from a PC using the proper "ROM Update Utility" (RUU) listed below or from a microSD card inside the phone
- Notice there are 3 different RUUs depending on what you want to flash to the phone from your PC
- ROM or RADIO files must be renamed accordingly: "RUU_signed.nbh" to flash from PC using RUU, or "KOVSimg.nbh" to flash directly from microSD
- Flashing SPLs or RADIOs is fast (a couple of minutes) and will not delete any info or software. Flashing ROMs takes more time and resets the device, erasing everything to its original state as if it were the first time you turn it on

Now, I´ve got a file with .image extension. What I have to do now with that file to get the "normal installer" like other times? Wich program I need to open this file?

I've upgraded my ROM Radio version at the BLACKSTONE Radio 1.10.25.25,but does't work.

Please notice I stated that all edited radios (imported from other phones) were tested on a security unlocked phone... We will need fir a security unlock tool to finally flash other radios successfuly

When I try to use Rom Update Utility, I get an error message (I don't remember de "error number") I searched for that error number and found that it is because this Rom Update Utility is not made for may device and I am using the Xperia X1i (from Vodafone Spain).

Can anyone please confirm that the Rom Update Utility posted here for the Xperia x1 (x1a) differs from the one I need for the X1i ??????

Converted to *.nbh

Renamed it to Kovsimg.nbh

Copied it to and Micro SD

Perhaps moderator could make this one sticky, i think it would be a good idea since it's the most complete and gtrab worked a lot in making this library the most useful possible for all.
And sure that it will save a lot of time from some people... and avoid dumb questions from some others not willing to read basic posts before flashing their first rom.... :D

Now let me answer to your questions:

1- I would be very pleased to upload the extracted OS, however, first I have to learn how and where to upload it here in this forum, any indications will be appreciated !!! (if not, I'll read the FAQs till I find how)

2- YES, I tried the MicroSD method with the "image" before and I got an ERROR message; it disappeared so fast (gone from the screen) that I couln't read the entire message!! Just saw the word ERROR.

3- I agree with you; even if you use a NoteBook and you have some guarantee because you are using a PC with "Battery" (in case of a failure), however you are always exposed to a Windows Hanging !!!!

Here you have the instructions I found at this forum about how to use NBH Util and this is what I did:

- Download the file you want to use and rename it from *****.image to ****.image.nbh
- Run NBHUtil
- Go to "Extract NBH" tab
- Choose *****.image.nbh
- Now you should see something like this:
Model ID: KOVS*****
Target CID: 11111111
Version: 1.02.932.3
Language: DEU Remember what it says here. Could be something else for you, depending on the language of the file you want to use!
Chunk Size: 64
- Click the "Extract" button next to OS:
- Save it as OS.nb
- Go to "Build NBH" tab
- Select the X1 as model

Differences between X1a and X1i ROMs have been discussed before, they are just barely, slightly different, and cookers usually remove or add stuff at will, so you'd better check the cooker's own ROM description to find out what's included and what's not

1- Try temporarily changing your WindowsXP or WindowsVista "regional settings" to english (UK or USA)

2- Beware: there are 3 different RUUs: one for flashing SPL only, one for flashing Radios and another one to flash ROMs

Great forum and my first post sorry if in the wrong place. I have been looking and reading before i posted and could have just missed it.

I have seen that you dont have to HardSPL when upgrading to the R2 if you still running R1, hope i am right lololo

What i would like to know is if you dont have to HardSPL do loose any data that you my have acquired or loaded onto the phone. eg garmin, touchflo, photos and movies etc

Here you have the instructions I found at this forum about how to use NBH Util and this is what I did:

- Download the file you want to use and rename it from *****.image to ****.image.nbh
- Run NBHUtil
- Go to "Extract NBH" tab
- Choose *****.image.nbh
- Now you should see something like this:

it is as simple as I've posted :D

Just follow the steps I've posted. For instance, if I say:

"Download the desired image file *.image and rename it to *.image.nbh"

JUST DO THAT. It is just a matter of "extensions"; doing that, NBHutils recognise that file as we would like to and so will let you to operate with it following the next steps.

Consider that this is my first "Adventure" with windows mobile devices, (till now just using Nokia Communicator Series) and if I have been able to this, be sure that you can do it better than I did :D

Perhaps to some degree its bug fixes/improvments and on the other hand I could imagine that diffrent regions have different radio frequenzies. Some use RDS some don't.

Different radios have different responses for different users over different carriers, it's trial and error

The only thing I can say for sure is:
If your transmitter radio is working OK (cell phone signal) don't change it

And the chance of bricking your phone is minimal
I've tested more than a dozen radios, no problem at all, they flaas or they don't, but never faced a severe problem

Please notice I stated that all edited radios (imported from other phones) were tested on a security unlocked phone... We will need fir a security unlock tool to finally flash other radios successfuly

BTW radio 1.10.25.18 works a treat for me

GPS locks in quick...signal is much more stable imo...doesn't flip flop as much as prior versions...will see what the battery life is like tonight as I have a night detail I am on till 4 a.m.

Flashing new radios will not hard-reset your Xperia
Nothing will be changed (except the radio)
But it is recommended to backup your info first, just in case ;)

YOU MUST HARD-SPL YOUR XPERIA FIRST !!

1.- CREATE A NEW FOLDER

2.- COPY "X1_CustomRUU.EXE" and one Radio ("*.nbh" file) of your choice (only one!!) to the new folder

3.- Synch your Xperia

4.- Run "X1_CustomRUU.EXE"

5.- Follow on-screen instructions

If you have already done the steps above....reflash...I have had signed radios fail the first time...redo the flash and it will go through.

That radio flashes fine on a security locked device. I have just flashed it and my X1 is now restarting after that flash.

Mine is security locked and it flashed fine....not sure why you had/have an issue....This was from an original X1 rom...shouldnt be an issue at all with flashing it...shouldn't be a need to hex edit anything.I extracted with nbh tool...then remade it with the same...flashed and it went right through. The 1.10 version failed the first time on mine...reflashed and it went through.

Redownload the package...I may have screwed up and put the wrong one in the package...doh...sorry everyone...I just finished flashing to the .76 radio again.(I went from the 1.10 radio to this one and it went through fine...shrugs).From the downloaded package I posted it wouldn't flash for some reason, maybe something got messed up in the compression or the upload of it or I did the above...anyway sorry guys...it should flash now.

- "Flash" = copy a file into the device read-only memory (ROM)
- Types of ROMs: SPL roms, firmware ROMs & transmitter RADIO roms. Original stock ROMs often include all three
- All ROMs are flashed with *.nbh extension. Some stock ROMs come as *.image and must be renamed to *.nbh first

The linked download RAR package contains:
The RADIO 1.11.25.76 ROM file "ruu_signed.nbh"
The Radio Update Utility (RUU) app "X1_CustomRUU.exe"
A small text file "XPERIA RADIO INSTRUCTIONS.txt"

If you don't want to use the RUU app, just copy the RADIO ROM file to your microSD card and rename it to "KOVSimg.nbh", then manually enter the bootloader screen and flash from your phone

What's incorrect about that ??

I would get your x1 first and play with it, then play with it somemore. then when you're fed up with what it comes with "as stock" you may start to feel the urge to replace all of that with something that could be quicker, or more stylish or less full of crap or just plain different, thus the custom roms are born..

As to the HardSpl etc. have a read of the Wiki on the top bar.
There's a glossary in it http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Glossary that will help you out a bit.

1.11.25.76 works fine,flashed mine numerous times via pc...and IF it didn't work with custom RUU, but did work with sd method then there is nothing wrong with the radio file...your connection to your pc possibly, but not the package posted...

Sorry, I mean official R2A. Sluggish when switching running programs, such as switching between opera, beejive IM, messaging. Then randomly crashes especially when loading the facebook panel.

i've finaly been able to upgrade my rom to the r2a one using the sony ericsson update service (seus). :)
differences i see:
1) google search bar on today screen
2) slightly faster
3) the r3a camera auto flash function (downloaded from a thread) now works!

The different is that each tool is made for they purpose so to flash rom use room flash tool, and for flash radio use radio flash tool, and so for hard-spl use hard-spl flash tool....
But i recommend you to use MicroSD method for both, radio and rom update (flash)...Because it is more safe.... Remember to have at least 50% battery
Just rename the Rom file to KOVSIMG.nbh and put it on the root of the MicroSD and then restart you phone in Bootloader mode and follow on screen instructions....
Wich you Luck....:p

Important:By the way hard-spl can not use MicroSd method!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks man.. Now i know what does ROM actually do.. But i need to know how can i check my current stock ROM version. Is it the Power + volume down button method or i can simply check in the phone programs itself (ex : Start>Programs....etc)

Not sure if this question has been asked, I searched the forums for awhile but just too much stuff on the xperia. Loox like a great phone, I want to buy it, but I live in Korea, so the one I would buy would be the Korean model, so it can support korean sms, etc. But I would still want the OS to be completely in English if possible - has this been done? Another korean smart phone (sch-m480) was unable to get a perfectly working cooked english ROM (i tried), but it seems this has a lot more people working on it. Anyone know? Thanks for any tips.

I can't find the Rom Update Utility to download so that I can flash my rom from my PC. I have tried the micro SD flash method, but it does not work, as I have followed directions carefully.

Please advise on where I can get the RUU and Radio flash utility as well.

for USA, use NAM R3A ROM, which you can update via SEUS (Sony Ericsson Update Service)

If you want to get a step further, pick your choice of a Windows Mobile6.5 (TITANIUM-BRONZE) upgrade or Manila (HTC TOUCH flo) custom ROM.
Check screenshots at every cooker's thread for a bit of visual input

Spent hours here to learn a bit about Roms & more, flashed a nice new one, its smooth and fast - but my pimary problem is still unsolved:

Is there a ROM out there, increasing Bluetooth-Functionality?
Xperia and others with 6.x offer only three tiny services to your Notebook or PC.

Urgently needed: A Simple serial protocol. the mom and queen of all, since you can connect virtually everything...

Nice to have: FTP and Filesharing...

Answer 1: Hrm, pretty sure, though not positive. This kind of quad band phone there must be a network it could work on with one telecom provider here.

Answer 2: Because I'm not familiar with hardSPL or the like. The only thing I've done so far is flash my korean X1 to an English X1 rom. I'm still unclear of these Radios, HardSPL, unlocking procedures, etc. I did search though, and after a lot of searching (but perhaps not enough) I thought I couldn't do it myself and I needed someone to find an unlock code for my IMIE (?). In which I tried htc-unlocks.com, but still no luck using the 'unlock program' to make it work, which supposedly automates the unlock process. So I was just thinking perhaps there's just a simple ROM one could flash. Too easy, I'm sure, but didn't hurt to ask. :)

Spixe1, to get your Korean X1 to work in the US, through roaming, you need to change some settings. Go to settings, personal, phone. Go to the network tab and click the "find" button. Then go to the "band" tab and set both drop down menus to "auto". SK Telecom 3g phones can all roam in the US.

But beware of the roaming charges. They are mucho expensive. You would probably be better off renting a phone while you are in the US. I was there recently and I rented a Blackberry.

Thanks rogatsby, but like said, I got a prepaid T-mobile plan here, i wanted to use that, its' cheaper than roaming charges. But I got it working. Unlocked the phone, and the t-mobile SIM card now works with no problem, though i did have to take the networking setting OFF auto and manually configure them to t-mobiles frequency. Otherwise it would find t-mobile network for a minute but then drop connection as it tries to auto-find other ones. But it's up and working now, thanx ya kindly. :D

If you flash the stock ROM then radio (and SPL) is often included in the ROM.

Btw, after flashing stock ROM then change back to stock SPL (if you have HSPL) and flash the stock ROM again, this will install the corresponding SPL (couldn't install when you had HSPL since HSPL is write protected).

I am currently on 1.14 Radio with Rogers, I was gonna update it to 1.16 using RUU but I am at the screen where it asked me to verify and i noticed that the image version that its currently at is 1.05.631.10 and the image version its going to flash to is 1.00.x1.

why you don`t use free tool "wktask" as main task manager? this is must usefull task manager that works like things in windows 7, and cooked in almost universal roms.

I also have a Rogers X1 and I was worried about that same issue but today I finally caved in and upgraded it, I notice it does get better reception. Make sure you use HardSLP first before upgrading or else it doesnt work and will fail.

I have WM6.5, I installed it around 2 months back... my QuickGPS does not launch and I have tried NATF_QuickGPS_1815.2630.2 but that doesnt even install... it says the software doesnt have permission...

A lot of Fuze users made a stink about how great it was, so I edited it for X1a to see for myself. No better than the X1 1.14.25.55 in my opinion. But since there is a 1.14.25.35 rilphone.dll from Fuze, it may be worth a shot for you. The combo radio/ril made little diff here in TN. Haven't posted it, but if you want it PM me.:)

When I try to extract the files from a ROM it says: access denied to most of the files.

So I don't get anything. Is there a way to do this? I would need obviously a program than can extract a protected rom. The one I found here does not really work.

I recently had to turn my phone in on warranty because of the damned keyboard being fucked up. Now they're telling me that it doesn't have the original rom and that the phone is out of warranty because of it. Could it be that they are just confused by my SPB mobile shell?

Gw sudah coba banyak ROM dari Christian, HTC Leo dan Kovsimg-V11 yg gw dapat dari xperia-world. Semuanya tidak bisa utk write cookies bila memakai IE. Tp bila gw pake ROM windows 6.1, IE-nya oke2 saja tuh.
Kalau dicek, ternyata utk cookies di IE(Windows Mobile 6.5) ada bugsnya.

hi there im from indonesia too, and im new in this forum....
i've updated my xperia via sony ericsson updater, then the WM 6.1 getting this
error with filesys.exe and gwes.exe it takes about 15 minute to load WM 6.1,
now i tried to update it again via SE updater, but it wont detect my xperia,
it said i must replug it but after i replug it still wont detect....
so i guess the better way to solve this is to looking around in this forum,

do we have more actual RadioRoms from other devices patched to be flashed onto Xperia?

I'm talking about Windows Mobile Revolution (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=497066), which allowed most of HTC devices to record calls two-way (earlier the other party's voice was indistinguishable).

So if we put the radio from HD or from Raphael (given the roms are hex-edited for X1 aforehand), and also copy all the dependent dll's from HD/Raphael to comply with the new radio, perhaps we will be able to record two-way conversations on Xperia too?

I flashed HD's radio from this thread, but it gave me no positive results. Either the RadioRom is earlier than the WM Revolution happened, or some dll files also need to be taken to the X1 for appropriate recording to be possible...


UPDATE: there's a reg-hack here which allows HDs and Raphaels etc. to record both parties of the conversation. There are some links to system files (dll's), which perhaps also are responsible for the hack to work like it is expected. XDA chefs, please give some advice, if we copy these files to our Xperias, will it have some impact on successful call record?

Guys, this is my first post although been user of this excellent forum for months.

I have two X1 phones, incl. girlfriend's one. In the past I have updgraded mine few times both with official ROM (using Kovsky thread & tool) and recently with WM 6.5 -Xperia 1.5 pure version. No problems here.

I have upgraded mu gf's phone before with official ROM. It was however recently repaired by SE with new motherboard with generic UK RAA3 firmware. I tried uploading Xperia 1.5 recent 27 Dec version but X1 wont take it/wont recognize it via RUU - it stops at "loading..." screen and then RUU returns 262 error.

I tried also microSD card, same problem - this I guess since HardSPL didnt work at first place. HardSPL stops at same "loading..." screen and PC returns 260 error.


I tried 2 computers (both MS Vista, one Business one Home premium), 3 different cables & few USB ports. I read both hardSPL and RUU manuals.

Tell me what is wrong with my gf's X1 - am I doing anything wrong?
