View Full Version : Ad-hoc WLAN communication between 2 WM devices

Hey guys, (for german see below)
I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this question but after hours of searching the www without finding any solution I'll give it a try.
I'm owner of a XDA Diamond (flashed another ROM in the meantime) and wanted to exchange some files with another Windows Mobile 6.1 device. As the folder is about 2GB we don't want to use Bluetooth cause this would take quite long. We managed to get a working ad-hoc connection but how do we transfer the files now?
Do I need any special software for file sharing?
Thanks in advance.
-----

if you connected to another device using ad-hoc you got an ip from that device. now, you can use the following guide to connect to that IP and map a drive. if i'm not mistaken it can map storage cards as well:

Thanks for the quick answer but unfortunately this is not what I was looking for.
We want to connect 2 Windows Mobile devices and not WM to PC. Well, basically this would help but then I first had to create a shared folder on my WM device. Can anyone please tell me how to do this?

What i meant is, that you try connecting to the ad-hoc server ( that is, your PDA) and try to map \\device-name\storage card\
i've never tried this but as PDA folders are shared by default.. I think it should work.
actually, PDA folders are not unshared..
also, incase you can't manage, try connecting your device using activesync and try sharing one of the storage card folders using your PC... I don't know if this kind of sharing protocol can be read by WM... but maybe it can.

We gave it a try and as assumed it does not work...
For the remote path I put in: "\\other device's IP\storage card\"
For local name: "test"
Immediately after pressing the Map Drive button I got the error message "Map Drive failed."
We also tried some other folders (e.g. "\\other device's IP\DCIM\") but none of them worked.
When browsing Network Neighborhood nothing happens.
A connection over PC is not intended. We just want to use the mobiles.

I understand. as i said, i've never tried this before.. too bad it doesn't work.
It's a good idea tho.... to transfer between phones.. let's try and figure out a solution..
I'll try to search for something and get back to you.

Really too bad.
In the meantime I got the needed files with the help of a PC but indeed it would be fine to know how to use WLAN for file exchange between mobiles.
I'm new to all this but to me it is strange that no one tried this before.
As I said I've searched the web for a solution for some hours but did not find ANYTHING. Really strange.

check these threads. i don't have 2 PDAs right now so i can't check if it works..
WM FTP CLIENT

WM FTP SERVER
http://www.mochasoft.dk/freeware/ftpd.htm
works :)
i'm also thinking, if you setup an ad-hoc server, you might not need a router at all

Ok, I'll try this and give a feedback as soon as I come to it.

I'm equally interested in this. Actually, I'm trying to access a WM file from my PC via WiFi, which I assume is only possible through an AS connection. I'd prefer to connect via infrastructure, i.e., join a workgroup on my network from my WM device and have my device show up as a workgroup computer. I guess MS disabled this capability for security reasons, the same reason they disabled running Activesync over WiFi.

after digging deep i found that the only way to connect to your PC using wifi in a setup connection is thru FTP. you can download and try a few ftp servers for pocketpc and connect using any ftp client on your pc.
the alternative of course (for wifi) is to use SOTI Pocket Controller (for instance).

I have a really old version of SOTI's Pocket Controller (4-5 years old). I wonder if that would work.

did you find a way to connect 2 wm devices (without pc) in the meantime??
The tread did not help me
Thx
