There are few ways of backup your contacts, sms and so on

1. Use Microsft ActiveSync with outlook, or
2. use PIM Backup (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=299705)

first, you need to patch your device for Hard-SPL. Please make sure you select the right patch either for GSM or CDMA network (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=400950)

I myself dont know whether customed cooked ROM are for both GSM and CDMA network. So please and asks if you are not sure. Anyway, there are many cooked ROMS in the forum.

Please pick one suits you best.
