View Full Version : Going to Cook A Finger Friendly Rom

I think the biggest issue with windows mobile touch screen phones is its so hard to use it with your fingers because the interface is so tiny. I'm relatively good with Photoshop CS4. So I will be able to skin the whole thing and what not. I was wondering though who is interested to beta test this? Also should I cook it with 6.5 or 6.1? I would say 6.1 for stability issues but I run 6.5 right now its a super fast and not many issues. Also anyone want to help out with this project like be part of the team. Thanks

I myself hate using the phone while on the move. Especially the dialer. I'll be dialing one number and the damn thing will be dialing another. If you can setup a finger friendly dialer I'd love it!

You are aware that Shaps is going to release 100% touch rom "soon" ?

Don't know if u had similar thing in mind.

And it's probably better to cook it with 6.5
Can help with testing if needed.

sounds like a good idea (i alwas wished i was better at photoshop). what kind of programs are you going to use to achieve finger-friendliness? also, my recommendation would be to stick to Windows Mobile 6.1 as your base, or 6.1.4, as these are the most stable.

good luck coking ;)

I am so sick of win.mo's lack of userf riendliness! I will srsly donatea lotta money once the Rom is done/ good/easy to use! anddd I will help testing too...I gotta an at/t tilt. Also...I recommend the following:
Browsers - Opera and Skyfire
GPS- TomTom...very fingerfriendly
Contact- either Yota contact or Icontact...and get the latest/fastest versions.
Home Screen- cook it such that when u hit the red/end button or hit "today" from startmenu...It goes to the UIprogram not default win.mo. homescreen. I reccomend either pointUI or a touchwiz theme or something.
Programs menu- cook it such that when u hit "programs" it opens touchlaunch

It'd be awesome if I see as lil of windows as possible. Plzz

Also....find a way/program that hides the startmenu when in like...the programs menu/etc....or a cool ap that when mapped to a hardwar button QUICLYm minimizes the windows startbar.

lastly ...I think we should base it off a phone...like completely iphone style - ifonz or a poseoff + icontact + s2p + s2u +s2v
orrr based on the omnia! with widgets ands hit. Make
as lil windowsmobile as possible!

Alright everyone sounds like a plan. I need suggestions for some things...I would like to make it native without a bunch of background software. Ill make a 6.1 version then if it succeeds ill cook a 6.5 version.

(Sorry for my slow reply =\ Got distracted by fall out 3. xD)

Sounds like you need SPB Mobile Shell. It is pretty much exactly what you just described.

Suggestions- throw in Remote Tracker
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=394203

Also the video share from AT&T. I don't think there are any cooked ROMS that support it yet, but the AT&T stock ROM has it built in.
http://www.wireless.att.com/learn/messaging-internet/media-entertainment/video-share-faqs.jsp

Some other cool things to throw in- an instant messenger (maybe 2- one that uses SMS like Oz and one that uses data like Palringo), Windows Live (for the email), Smiley SMS, an RSS reader, an ebook reader, a stop watch/timer, a bunch of games, livecast and/or qik... Nobody ever puts these in their ROMs for some reason...

TheParadox
13th February 2009, 03:21 PM
Ill throw in palringo it rocks at IM. Has most all the networks fast and looks nice. =] Alright ill add all those. Ill work on this today as I have time off of school as its a half day.

Yeah, that's SPB Mobile shell. I mentioned it earlier in this thread. It's the best interface out there at the moment. way better than Manilla, and it works properly in Landscape too. There are tons of skins you can install for it in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=389106

I love it.

Since you're taking suggestions, QuickMenu. I love this application, and it is the second application that I install on my phone when I change the ROM. Also of suggestion is File Explorer Extensions. It adds the missing extensions to Mobile Explorer. This is the very first application that I install when I change the ROM. Also, a shortcut to Field Test would be nice, and include TCPMP 0.71 RC1 recomp 03 along with all the plug ins.

Yes but it's not freeware so will contrary to the rules of XDA if placed and cooked into a ROM without a liscence.

If you want something simple finger friendly "Free" take a look @ Homescreen++ i'm sure you could make something very finger friendly and minimal :)

TheParadox
14th February 2009, 08:32 PM
Unfortunately I don't think itd be a good idea to include a cracked copy of SPB Mobile shell. I would rather get it as touch friendly natively without the major slowdown and ram usage if possible. What windows mobile emulator should I use that works with 64bit?

WatermelonSlim
14th February 2009, 08:39 PM
SPB has a free trial download of Mobile Shell. It could be included and whoever installs it could either activate it or disable it from the today screen...

Yeah kinda defeets the point of it as people can download it then, i'm thinking the OP want's to put together a finger friendly ROM, as previous post says Homescreen++ could be used and something minimal could be the homescreen.
Obviously up to the OP just expresing my thoughts.

There is supposedly a new version of SPB Mobile Shell getting released next week at MWC anyway (and WM 6.5, and the Microsoft free over the air sync) so it might be better to wait until after all of those things are released before making any final decisions...

I'm running Vista and it works fine. What error are you getting?

TheParadox

Are you running vista 64bit? Once I select all the packages to include in the rom, after I hit go I get this "Error executing: Create_Rom_For_Kaiser.bat"

which Kitchen are you using? it doesn't have to do with the OS, that's for sure

TheParadox

Well I do know that 64bit does run into alot of compatibility issues, I only run it do to the ammount of RAM Im using otherwise it wouldnt be utilized. Im using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=441915. I think its a modified version of it though because it has some more features than alexs but same ui and whatnot.

You can try the NATF kitchen if you want to try a different one. His ROMs were my favorite before he moved on to the Fuze:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=443026

His ROMs were based off the AT&T ROM so they worked particularly well for AT&T users.

Sorry guys. Looks like this is going to be postponed. Unfortunately my teacher decided to fail me on a project because my group decided to not give me credit for what I did, and parents decided to ground me from everything. (Also in a big fight with gf...meh :() Ill get back on my feet as soon as I can and I will deliver this project like I said.

Opera is particularly a tough one to cook into a ROM. Not only does it take up double the space than it does if you install it by a .cab, but the included tool in KaiserKitchen does not do a great job of turning it into an OEM Package. Which is why I use this excellent tool:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=422942

just download it, put the .exe somewhere on your computer, drag the Opera .cab on TOP of the .exe file, and drop it. Then go into the OEM Package it creates and delete SETUPDLL.dll or SETUP.dll if there is one :)

sorry to hear about the gf and parents :(
