Help with updating

Hi all

I am new to this website and would like to update my NIKI100 HTC Touch Dual P5500 to WM6.1 - but I want to be able to revert back if there is a problem.

I have downloaded an OEM ROM RUU_Nike_HTC_WWE_2.09.405.1_Radio_NikeMR_1.65.28.2 5_signed_Ship.exe

Mine is currently WM6 Pro (Build 18128.0.4.4) and is an unlocked phone...

ROM Date: 03/14/08
Radio Version: 1.58.21.23
Protocol Version: 25.65.30.04H

Firstly, is the ROM I downloaded the english one? I am in Australia, so will any English ROM work? Is the one I downloaded WM6.1 and how can I tell before installing?

Reading through the forum it appears I need to install hardspl prior to doing any changes - is that correct?

If the whole thing goes horribly wrong and the phone doesn't start, how do I get it back to a working ROM? I am fearful of having a broken phone and being unable to get it functioning again.

Sorry for all the noob questions, just want to know what I need to do before I start.

WWE stands for World Wide English (not world wrestling entertainment)

Good insurance to prevent the SPL from being overwritten accidentally. You'll need HardSPL 1.22 if you want to install later ROMs.

With HardSPL installed, turn off phone (eg take battery out and then replace it). Hold down camera button and turn phone back on. This will drop it into bootloader mode. You can connect it to your PC via a USB cable and flash another ROM.
