Hi guys,

I bought the extended 3rd party 1800mAh battery for Diamond and as discussed many times here in the forum, the GPS was unusable with it.
But after some research I found the solution to our problem:

http://4pda.ru/forum/index.php?showtopic=84581&st=740&p=2277790&#entry2277790

Its in russian, but you can see at least the pictures:

This is a piece of cooking aluminum foil fixed with scotch tape right of the camera lenses.
I just tried it and the result is amazing - GPS works as with the original slim battery. I think the foil works as a shield of the battery and helps receiving GPS signal.

Very cool.. anyone else tried this various branded batteries?

I have the official HTC 1340mAh battery and GPS works fine without anything... but would be interested in a longer battery if this actually works for others.

Thanks!

Well that because the BPE270 is an official htc battery the gps would work fine. This fix is for people who have opted to use non htc extended batteries like the mugen batteries which have had confirmed problems with gps. My BP E270 works great without the foil, but my 1000mah mugen battery requires the foil. I have noted that the foil gets me a quicker gps lock with my other batteries as well.

Is the piece of foil stuck down between the battery and phone or is it just a piece of foil on top of the area above the battery?

Wow that great :eek:
I just put in the massive Cameron Sino (RoHS) 2400ma battery, and as expected without the foil couldn't get any Sat’s but after putting this postage stamp size piece of foil on it can get them ok.

I’m now wondering if I could improve reception even further if I put even more foil in perhaps either side of the cameras iris, or all around the battery except near the contacts ?:confused:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Answer to my own question :- I removed the previously suggested postage stamp sized foil and just put foil around the battery allowing it to come into contact with the metal plate that is beneath the battery compartment. Doing this it did not find any Satellites, so no improvement is likely, I will revert to just putting foil in as suggested on the 1st message i cant beat it.
i use 1850MHZ replacement battery. The manufacturer has already consider this. looks the same as this solution. GPS works fine and the phone looks like a touch pro :D
Tried on my new Cameron Sino 1800mAh battery. It worked but takes long time for cold start to connect while warm start about 90sec. Sometime it offset to sideway. Anyone having solution to this.
Looking at the first posts Photos it keeps nagging at me that perhaps this guy just took a guess at what size the foil should be to gain an improvement and perhaps even better signal could be acquired. So I had first tried a larger piece of foil but that made reception worse so now I have cut in a smaller patch (see my photo) and after testing I think reception is slightly better. I would be interested in their results if anyone else experimented with foil sizing.
It’s complicated determining what gives the best signal, I timed how long it took to get a fix (bars turn blue in TomTom) after removing the battery and waiting an hour and moving position so as TomTom would be disorientated when starting up. I don’t think other members could compare results as I have found speed of getting a fix is vastly different dependent what part of the world I happened to be in.
Just tried the foil in a non-HTC 1800mah battery and it works like a treat now ! Amazing !!!!!!! They should just build these shields into the battery anyway ? But I suppose that's what you get when you by a non-HTC battery for half the price ? BUt hey...Im not complaining now...
Just tried this on the MDA Compact IV with original battery. Fired up TomTom in middle of house with very limited view of a window. TomTom got a fix on 2 satellites. Put foil in and now it picks up 4 sats with 5th registering intermittently. Wow!
Shame there isn't a similar trick for the radio
I faced the same problem when I replaced the original 900mAh battery of my Diamond with an extended 1800mAh battery. The GPS was not working anymore. I tried everything I could (hard reset, software patches, etc) with not result. Then... I read this post with aluminum foil and .... IT WORKED!!!!
Thanks nick_todorov, you saved me!
I just reduced the size of my foil and I think it is better. Definitely got a fix quicker but seemed same accuracy once fix was established.
before tin foil i getting 4 sats blue bars in my room, after adding foil i getting 11 blue sat bars in my room, stock htc battery.
foil = possibly a gps antenna rather than a rf battery shield
i done this as when i got the 1800 mah battery i found that i lost the functionality of my gps so i put foil in the top right corner as person has done above and i now have my gps functioning properly i looked it up a bit further and the foil acts like a antenna also be careful not to cover the foil with tape keep it as close to the edge as possible and if anything have as little tape covering it as possible and it will work perfect for you like it did with me before this even with the slim battery my gps did not work in doors now with this it does work in doors with the 900Mah battery and the 1800Mah battery :)
thanks nick_todorov you have solved the new problem i got
