Hi guys,
today I talked to an HTC guy on the CeBIT convention in Hannover. I asked him about the release of Windows Mobile 6.5 for the Diamond 1 and he said that he is sure it will come as an update for the Diamond aswell. Diamond 2 will get the update, too. I tested the Diamond 2 today and I must say: AWESOME!!! That thing is so extremely fast in TouchFlo 3D. I had my Diamond 1 in one hand and the Diamond 2 in the other and now I could throw away my Diamond :D The new Menu for programs is nice, too. All together the Diamond 2 is much better than the Diamond and I think I will sell my Diamond 1 and buy the Diamond 2.

In fact he couldn't give me a final answer on this :D I guess he was not the right one to answer the question :p Only a salesman i think. But in my opinion it's worth waiting for Touch Diamond 2, no matter if it'll be released this or next month. There was another guy buggin' him with stupid questions about connecting HTC devices over bluetooth to his car hands free, so I left without asking more questions...

I mean no disrespect to you, but I really hope that you found the only (IMHO) honest and knowledgeable telephone company salesperson.
That in itself would be an awesome discovery, much more incredible than the 6.5 upgrade for the Diamond :)

:D That could be true...
Maybe I better wrote another title for this topic: "Diamond 2 - WOW! Windows Mobile 6.5 on Diamond 1: Very possible!"
Salesmen are really clever, but not in giving technical information ;)

i hope this is true because there are rumors poping up that wm6.5 will only be avaiable for phones with a hardware windows start button

The word from Microsoft is that ONLY the phones with Windows button will ever be supported as a Windows Mobile 6.5 platform. I'd say that minimizes the chance that HTC will take the time and money to develop a 6.5 rom for an old device that will probably be end of life soon.

yet tested our beloved device with a pre wm6.5 and it's too much sloooow and crappy too
I think wm6.5 needs more ram, perhaps could be sane on diamond2 but right now isn't ready to be used on diamond1

i don't see why MS is saying it HAS to have a start button. the Diamond had 9 hardware buttons (if the whole pad is broken down into all its functions) i'm sure that one of those buttons could be allocated for that use

I totally agree with that ;) Put a Windows Logo sticker over the "Home" Hardwarebutton and voila ^^

I have to admit I'm a bit puzzled as to why this is a stumbling block. WinMo 6.5 will presumably be a whole new ROM and I imagine would have a few chefs cooking with it. We've seen that it will work on Diamond, it should be simple enough to map a single button to make it work.
Shouldn't it?

not sure if I am toe-stepping, or pointing out what everyone already know, but there's a winmo 6.5 beta for the diamond here ->

havent given it a go yet, as my Diamond isn't really expendable (work phone i'd be shot for messing up) but it seems though good progress has been made!

Yeah Windows Mobile 6.5 BETA has been released from several cookers, but I was talking about native support for WM6.5 on the HTC Touch Diamond. Even if HTC won't update the Diamond, the cookers here will release it for us, that's for sure ;) But it would be nice if HTC gives an official update for the Diamond 1.

I think it is unlikely: no windows start key (which is not needed of course, but it is an advertising trick from microsoft, which imho is fearing the lack of image associated to WinMo compared to the new kids in town (android, OSX, WebOS), and is trying to get smartphone manufacturer to provide some free advertising - equivalent to "Windows Vista compatible" on the PC peripherals for example), so probably HTC will not get the OK from Microsoft on this one. Morerover, it is not sure HTC would do it even if they could (except maybe for the touch HD): Diamond2 and Pro2 will be out before WinMo6.5, so upgrading only the latest model is a way to force the previous ones (TD1/TP1) into obsolescence...especially as the specs are not so different, so any differentiation is good to get...
TouchHD successor seems further away, possibly after the release of the first 6.5 devices, or the 6.5 upgrade for TD2/TP2...so I guess official touch HD upgrade is maybe possible...
