HOW TO: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vTCAbs7GCMs
I got tired of using standard omnia launcher so I wrote a new one. You can see it in action here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4WF2atnnD8 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4WF2atnnD8)
This is the first release so it can have some bugs. It was tested only on samsung omnia so if you get it running on other devices please let me know.
If you'd like to configure the favotires, icons etc. find the installation folder - usually in Program Files and look for files:
Favorites.txt - add any application to the list and you should see it in favorites,
Icons/Icons.txt - will assign new icons to apps (name, icon). You can add any png 48x48 or 32x32 image - see Icons folder.
Exclude.txt - add app to the list and it will be excluded from the app list.
This is first release. Probably I will add some configuration latter.
Consider donating for further releases. (https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=4036621)

It should work on QVGA and QWVGA. No VGA as it is first release.

OK, I've just installed it ,it works, not as fast as it should work in a Samsung Omnia....but it's ok
If you start it for the first time it may take some time to cache everything, but then if you run it again it should run faster.

actually, it works just fine on QVGA. This is great!
I was wondering if you could make something exactly like the TouchFLO 3d all programs launcher? that would be amazing :)

Ok, it's true, after the first time it gets really fast and smooth (I really love it), but I still didnt get my shortcuts work. Any idea?
Htc Touch. WM 6.1
Now it saw, it only launch the shortcuts if I slide to right, is it right?

Excellent app!! Just one question/request. Would you be able to implement a "category" system? Something similar to how iContact handles categories, if at all possible. If so, this would be an absolutely killer app. (Not that it isn't already. :D)
Keep up the great work!
MrMage

It does work with my VGA Axim x51v, but it has some quirks, like. And its insanely smooth! I have never experienced such smooth scrolling on my PDA before, even though I don't like the menu lagging a little behind my finger (but I suppose that to be intended)! A great application already!
Could you tell me where you got this smoothly animated list control from?
/edit: Oh, and it seems to kill all the regular icons until I soft reset. See screnshot 3 for details.
/edit 2: I did not yet get it to start an application ^^ But I find it awesome that you can create such smooth applications using .NET CF.

18th March 2009, 03:27 AM
Wow, that's some really smooth scrolling. And its just .net :D
I just tested it on a wvga toshiba G900. Just as MrMage, i wasn't able to actually launch anything. Probably the app interpreted tapping attempt as dragging, since the reported stylus coordinates change on vga devices twice as fast as on qvga.
Also, the inertia when you release the finger is a bit too slow (again, probably the speed is measured in pixels/time period, so iw would need to be twice as fast for vga). Bot this really has some potential. Add it also includes a task manager - nice. This project may just turn into a finger-friendly QuickMenu alternatuve (at least i hope it does :D).
Just keep in mind that when creating a (w)VGA version you'll need to double all movement tresholds and speeds so it might be a good idea not to hardcode them.

To launch application slide from left to right. Tapping on app does not work as accidental taps frequently occur when you scroll.

It reads all the shortcuts from /windows/start menu if anything is missing see if you have the shortcut there. With the next release there will be a Include file that will allow you to add any custom applications to FingerPoint launcher.
See first post how to configure.

This is a great launcher.
If we had access to settings too, it will totaly replace the default start menu.
But Control Panel doesn't open nothing. Is this function not included yet, or there is a problem with my device(Touch Cruise Lolite WWE rom)?

Great app!! Congrats! :).
A little freeze first time loading the 2nd tab (probably cause it was catching my installed app's... right? ). Also if you press your finger for more than some little time the tab's buttons will not react (about this I think that an pressed effect for icons is needed ;) ).
Keep up the good work!!
edit: The gestures to open the apps are cool but I think they difficult a little bit the usage of the app. I guess this is done in order to make scrolling smoother... but I would prefer a simple launch on click thing...
edit2: bug: if you scroll quickly and release the finger over where the footer icons are supposed to be the footer action is launched.
Could we change the app backgorund? or is it fixed to white?
P.S. Check this :). Works nicely embeded inside ThrottleLauncher! :D

I had double click for launching but didn't like it.

It's a known issue - right now I'm working on that.
Could we change the app background? or is it fixed to white? :D
Now its white but it is totally seperated from the application so it will be configurable in future. Now you can configure icons, favorites and exclusions from the list.

Hey man this is really cool. I tested it on my touch pro. Although the apps don't launch and everything's pretty small, it runs really smooth and I can't wait for a VGA version.
When a VGA version is released, I'm going to bind this to my start menu button lol.

It stays in memory because it starts quicker if it does not have to find all links to installed programs. FingerPoint automatically checks if it does not eat to much memory if it does it will quit and restart.

Runs great on my Hermes. The scrolling is really smooth. Here are my suggestions:
1. Shortcuts to Mortscripts are not displayed with icons, instead the icon path is shown.
2. The Favorites.txt file is sorted alphabetically. I wanted to list my apps in a particular order for ex: Office apps, then games, then multimedia, etc. Maybe even put empty *.lnk files to use as headers on the list...
3. I would prefer the app to exit when I launch a program because in the Hermes every kb of memory counts.

great app...
i personally would like to see some skinning support...
also, on my qvga kaiser... the random access type search thing on the right...
since you made this for wvga i can only go down to T since i dont have the 80 or so pixels to get to the rest of the alphabet
keep up the good work... excellent for a first release

This is a really clean looking/smooth scrolling app but it is soooooo RAM heavy. On a fresh boot I have 44MB of free ram. Just launching the launcher uses 3MB RAM, using the search and caching the entire app list bumps that up to 10MB! I guess I could exclude everything except what i would dub "favorites" but even still it's a lot of RAM use. Also the 3MB of RAM that is captured on opening it isn't free'd up if I close it. And cleanRAM/Oxios Hibernate/Oxios Close Apps won't reclaim it, and if I open it again it somehow captures another 3MB of ram? So if I clean boot clean boot and open 44MB->41MB; close it and reopen and 41MB->38MB. At this point I'll use RAM freeing tools and it won't budge unless I soft reset. Maybe it's something I'm doing? Anyway, great work, really hope that as another poster said before you make a "lite" version.

First of all: This is the greatest launcher I've tried this far.
Already asked: Access to "Settings"
Make it optional when closing to keep it in the background or totally kill; flushing unused memory is very importar for older units like Trinity. Is it to ask for too much to configure which applications will launch straight on, and which will first shutdown the launcher and the run the app? I mean, if I need to shutdown Finger Launch to run iGo (memory hungry), it means that I can not launch iGo from the launcher? Sorry for the wording mess...
I suppose that the very nice icons are taking a great deal of memory it requires. Is it possible to make it lighter?
Again, congratulations. I'll follow you up.

This is by far the best, smoothest, and faster finger launcher I have seen on here. It is a little memory intensive, nut I understand why. I also, I am in favor of the way you have it launching applications now. It always launches when I swipe my finger left to right and that allows for the whole screen to be "flickable" without accidently launching something. Keep up the great work.

The pixels/time period is not hardcoded and in the future will be configurable. Pretty soon probably in registry. Unfortunately I don't have any big experience in mobile device development - this is my first app so I guess I will have to figure out all the differences between vga/qvga devices.
Wow, that's SOME first app :D As for the VGA/QVGA differences - it seems that you already have half of the fork done by the .net, since it nicely fills the screen on a wvga device, the buttons are where they're suposed to be (at the bottom), everything is just too small.
I guess the easiest way to make this work for any resolution is to read DPI info from the registry (HKCU/Software/Microsoft/DPI). (w)qVGA devices use 96dpi, (w)VGA use twice this value - 192dpi. You can use this value as a multiplier for all speeds/thresholds/item sizes. For example, if an icon for qvga device (96dpi) is drawn as 24x24, it means that the same icon should be drawn on a vga device (192dpi) as 192/96*24 = 48x48px to have similar size on the screen. If a device uses 128dpi resolution, then to have roughly the same size on the screen, the icon should be drawn as 128/92*24=33x33px.
The advantage of this solution is that you don't have to take every possible resolution into account - device manufacturers do it for you by setting dpi value so that all WinMo UI elements are roughly the same size for all devices.
Oh, and by the way, launching items by sliding DOES work after all :D Just for the future it would be nice to be able to configure slide direction (or use any direction). Also, some visual feedback for sliding would be nice (the row actually sliding to the side as you move your finger?).

Loaded it up. Here's my initial comments:
1. Runs smoothly on my iPAQ 910c, despite it's landscape QVGA screen (the landscape orientation seems to be an issue for other similar programs).
2. The interface is too big for the QVGA landscape layout (see attached image). The buttons at the bottom take up roughly a quarter the height of the screen, and the list items themselves are so large that only 3 can be seen at any one time. I use Resco Exploer and FingerMenu, and both are quite functional even with item lines nearly half the height of those in FingerPoint.
3. The slide-to-launch functionality really doesn't work (at least for me). I agree that tapping on the screen can cause common mis-clicks, but double-tap works fine in other apps (see above). At least offering it as an option would be nice.
4. A view for accessing system Settings would be wonderful.
5. [edit] One additional request: I'd love for the find mode to respect sub-folders. I have some apps (HandySwitcher, Resco Contacts, and SBSH iLauncher) that create subfolders with a bunch of specific shortcuts to their various modules. Scrolling through all those can be a bit of pain when clumped together. As such, having an option to enable use of sub-folders, so you could navigate into and out of the folders (rather than viewing all shortcuts in the Start Menu as a whole) would be nice.
(I realize some of these may have already been mentioned, but they're worth mentioning again.)
Despite my criticisms (which I offer constructively), all in all this is an excellent first release. Please keep up the wonderful work!

I did that in alpha version but I removed it as it was not very smooth and consumed extra memory. Maybe I get back to it if I figure out how to make it smoother.

I'll try to add this.
4. A view for accessing system Settings would be wonderful.
I have it done in my next release.
As such, having an option to enable use of sub-folders, so you could navigate into and out of the folders (rather than viewing all shortcuts in the Start Menu as a whole) would be nice.[/INDENT]
this can take some time to implement.
(I realize some of these may have already been mentioned, but they're worth mentioning again.)
Despite my criticisms (which I offer constructively), all in all this is an excellent first release. Please keep up the wonderful work!
Next release coming soon.

I am working on memory leaks, but on my device it never got over 2MB. Still working to make the app start faster so it could exit every time you launch an app.

Is it possible to add favorites order feature?
Now all programs in favorites list alphabetically ordered, but it is inconvenient because if I have more than 4 programs in favorites I need to scroll the list to get lower programs. I'm using everyday very often only 3 or 4 programs, so I want them to be placed higher than the others.

Bit slow to load non-favourites.

First Off: Great Proggi!! Love it!
Got some suggestions though, some may be mentioned already, although i tried to catch all of them.
1. Give it a dedicated button space that can be transparent to show what underneath but that should be customizable.
2. Make the buttons gesture-sensitve also. For example let me have (unlimited) customizable folders that are arranged on a horizontal wheel-dial. Tap-move left -> next iconfolder Tap-move right previous, and bring this button to the middle of screen so that we have more space to move around.
3. Kill all entries in "All programs" that are already in Favorites
4. The alphabet-slide does not go to "XYZ" on my Omnia. Maybe some bug, maybe intention, but tell us about it if that is the case, becous i would like it to go down there too (got some XYZ proggis :) )
5. Second the optional gesture-config to all options (taptap, tapslideleft, tapslideright)
6. Please add TapHold for copying programs to one of the favorites folders, or make a special screen for that. It's sometime anoying to add a program and it doesnt load because you forgot that bl*** "s" at the end..:)
7. Consider centering the program names as an option (i don`t know if that would work or if it even makes sense, was just some idea)
8. Make a dialog for adding Icons to programs which do not show one by themself. You could put that together with 6. by having some gesture to open this dialog from a button.
And now something i don`t know if it's a bug or just me. In Landscape mode, your program doesnt claim the whole screen. It leaves a little rest on the right from the portrait-mode and gives me a square version of it self on the left. Look at the pic for the result.
Thanks for considering and programing such a great tool!

It is a very interesting and beautiful app..... It is working on my Elfin. Suggest to have the configuration feature will be much better. I think it would be useful if magnifier icon will show actual position inside the app list. What I mean. If you scroll down the list and stop the scrolling somewhere it is impossible to recognize actual position inside the app list where you stoped scrolling. If you then press searching button (magnifier icon) you'll be switched at the top of the list. Maybe it is better to make searching button also "search-tuning" button? I mean if you stop scrolling somewhere you can scroll up or down to find needed app but at the same time can use searching button to do the same but not from the top of the list but from the actual position where you stopped scrolling. Just like the standard windows scroll box. What do you think about it?

This is a really nice application. I was kind of surprised that it's a first release, as it seriously looks professional. I've been using it for a little while, and although it's great, I would still change a few things.
Control panel support, but I know that's coming soon anyway according to your new youtube video.
Remove the option to close Shell32.exe in the task management section. It is a critical system process that should never be closed, so having the option to terminate it is not so great.
This may have to do with my having a QVGA screen instead of a WQVGA screen, but when I slide the magnifying glass down to find an application by name, it will stop at V despite having apps that go to Z. Maybe this is because the magnifying glass slides down anticipating more screen space when in reality, my screen ends. I don't know, but it's not a huge problem for me anyway.
Other than these issues, it's great and when the new version comes out, I'm most certainly mapping it to the start menu. Thanks,
Dave

having to keep this neat app running all the time faces my personal user experience with a slight problem (no, im not talking about memory/RAM here):
i made it a habit for me to kill all running apps using the task switcher after i was using my device. this of course cannot be done while using this launcher (cause of the quite long loading time when it caches your programs). you have to admit that killing all running programs using your launcher is quite time consuming. the possibilty to kill all other running tasks (exluding the launcher) with just a single button would seriously make this my launcher of choice!

By far the best app launcher I've run across. Great job! I'm running it on an Omnia as well and almost immediately bound it to a soft button, it's that good.
- Landscape mode is screwy, I think you mentioned you were aware and were working on it. I'd like to see the mode buttons move over to the right so they don't cover the list.
- The buttons took a little while to figure out, particularly because the full program list takes a while to load up the first time. Maybe a little dialog window could pop up saying "Loading"? A progress bar would be even better ;)
- The slide-to-launch and lack of in-program customization threw me off for a bit (I should learn to read descriptions better before I download!) Not a problem for a first release but reading a lot of user comments I can see a lot of other people don't get the sliding thing at first either and think it doesn't work. Maybe a short "readme" screen that pops up the first time it's run would help...
- Would like a feature to re-load the program list. When I install a new app, Finger Point doesn't see it until I kill it with the Task manager and re-launch it.
Can't wait to see this get even better... why can't everyone write apps that look and feel this great ;)

It runs really well and smooth (except for it _sometimes_ freezes for half a second while scrolling, but it's not a big problem) - but I have two little bugs: it appears it cannot always take a proper icon and it prints a text instead. Look for those two examples: one of them is mortscript file, it's a link to script, the icon should be taken from mortscript itself, the other one is just a CAB file put into start menu.

Hi, first off i have to say this is a great utility, its fast, well designed and simple.
I was thus wondering if you could possibly think about having an option to scroll through different tabs, sorta like your slide to launch, except on the bottom where the different tabs buttons are, ie slide to move to another tab.
If possible why not make it even doing it as smoothly as your scrolling seems to work. Granted you would probably need to store additional stuff in memory, but if you just stored the tabs to the left and to the right of your current one it shouldn't be too bad. Also if memory is an issue with other programs, you did mention you were going to make this app autoclose upon launch of other applications, so the memory point should be moot.

Groups of apps - that's what it was lacking! :D Very smart move with adding this, this will noticable speed up overall usage. Partial data loading is good thing, too. So, in short: fantastic job, waiting for the release

If you’d like to try VGA Version please find setting.xml file and change

<FingerPoint Skin="VGA/VGABlack.xml">
This skin scales icons to be bigger.
If you would like to make your own skin find folder /Skins/WQVGA and inside thare are some xml files that are responsible for skin colors and layout in WQVGA resolution.
There is still no configuration of the app if any one would like to write external application – like an FingerPoint Configurator – please do it as I do not have much time to do it myself.
If any one has questions regarding setting.xml or skin xmls please ask I will be happy to answer them.
Enjoy new version.

Here would be my dream list:
Add a control panel to configure.
When starting only load config file (move the scanning on the programs folder to the config program)
Have the config program look like the main program but instead of showing the date/time info show if it's on the favorites and/or main list. Then when you slide over it it pops up a screen to let you check what list to have it show up on (or none if you want it hidden).
This would make it more flexible and possibly load faster.
PS. Is this going to be open source? Depending on what it's written in I might be able to help. :)

Dear Ryhkowal ,
First of all thank you very much indeed for this wonderful solution, representing a huge work!
Nevertheless, we are numerous users sharing our experience with FingerPoint in a French forum to prefer the first version than the updated one.
We feel it much easier to customize and enjoy the way we can do it!
Our dream would be to be able to keep this version, but to have it improved with two features that are maybe not so much difficult to carry out on your side. So may I kindly ask you to let us know if any of those expected features could be workable?
1/ A possibility to change the order of the bottom tabs?
The goal being for example to directly open FingerPoint with the whole list of programs, instead of the favorites.
2/ A possibility to modify the background? Not only the icons, (that is already a real must in FingerPoint!).
In our opinion, such features would make this first version the best way we never found to use our applications on our mobile phones.
With kindest regards,
Dan :)

danbert: I hope you don't mind my asking, but which French forum is this? I live in Paris with my "Player Addict" and would like to check out local Omnia forums!:)

Awesome app. Can't wait for a new version.
I'm running it on my Touch HD. Scrolling is not as smooth as in the video and the symbols are smaller.

Initially, program seemed to run smooth and fast, however, when I tried the icons on the bottom, things went bad. Favorites icon displayed programs I didn't even know I had and don't want, but no obvious way to delete them.
All programs/apps icon was fine. Slide funciton worked fast for Opening and Closing programs.
NOW, the Windows START in the top tool bar would not bring up start menu any longer, but activated the clock setting function on the Today screen instead (boxed the clock time). Active Process icon (3rd icon from left) froze my phone. Exit icon would not work.
Magnify button blocked the top entry on the right side. It needs to be moved, maybe down to a new "Menu" icon on the bottom. You can place Exit, and magnify under the same icon.
Needs some kind of instructions for adding or deleting favorites, changing background etc. Maybe you can come up with a Configuration Settings menu.
Soft reset twice before I could uninstall program. Phone is fine now. Program still a bit buggy. Don't like it when programs lock and freeze my phone.
Too bad, it looked promising.

Hi to all,
I installed the cab.
The program works but I don't find the Favorites.txt ,icons.txt or Exclude.txt in the directory programmi\fingerpoint.
Why ?
