View Full Version : 3G Speed Test: Seriously? That's it?!?

AT&T Full strength "3G" connection is only clocking in at around 350kbps. Horrible. Edge is more like 120kbps.
I am using Medianet, have the PDA connect plan (that they forced me into), and even went to the trouble to utilize the "restore proxy" program in "tools" - no matter - still 350kbps. Sometimes it will come in over 400, but not often.
Wouldn't be so frustrating if it weren't for the fact that I'm sitting there with my wifes 3G iphone on the same network in the same place using the same speed test and she will regularly come in around 1400kbps.
Called AT&T to no avail. They said they were going to research it and set up an appointment to call me back even, but then they no-showed the appointment and never called.
What on earth am I doing wrong? How can I speed this thing up?

Have you tried changing ur connection settings to AT&T ISP instead of medianet? That always gets me super fast speeds.

Haven't tried that - was under the impression that you had to have the "tethering" plan to utilize the ISP address.
Is that my problem? Anyone else having medianet speed issues? What speeds are others getting?

Try enabling HSDPA and see the difference

And if you're doing it ON the phone, you're doing it wrong. USB tethered I see about 2000k/sec here sometimes, but more typically 1400. On the phone itself I MIGHT see 700k.

Tried enabling hsdpa - but no difference. Suposedly its already enabled on these phones - just reads "3g" all the time.
Also trying tethered and getting the exact same speeds.
Using dslreports.com - they have a lowbandwidth that works well with phones...
Other thoughts?

Thanks. I just tried this, but for some reason it can't connect, and no proxy is not enabled. Any ideas?

Are you able to do this without a tethering plan? I've tried to enable and it doesn't work. I do have the PDA unlimited plan. Any special settings needed other than changing from Media Net to AT&T ISP in the Network Management settings?

try mobilespeedtest.com. I get between 4mb and 6mb down, consistently. Until a month ago I never got higher than 400 to 700k. It does seem loads snappier. Come to think of it, I did upgrade to wm6.1 about the same time, and I do have HSDPA enabled via kaiser tweaks.

I don't know what you're doing exactly, but what you need to do is change your access point from wap.cingular to isp.cingular.
Last I checked, any plan over $30 gave you access to isp.cingular, but that may have changed. You can always use it, but if your plan doesn't have it they might charge you per kb. If that happens, I've never heard of a case where AT&T wouldn't remove the resulting charge.

AT&T has been rolling out support for 7.2Mbps HSDPA, you probably just got it in your city. Where do you live?

I have the the PDA unlimited data plan, $30.00. Tried to change networks several times, and made sure the settings used isp.cingular. It will not connect to the Internet until I change back to Medianet.

(sigh) - If only it were that easy. I've spent the last two hours trying to research these settings online to no avail.
350kbps. 350kbps. Maybe I just need a new phone. I am not sure this thing is worth it anymore...

If it's a Kaiser, it's not likely the phone. It's your provider. Unless you have two phones side-by-side and one is giving higher speeds than the other, it's likely just your provider/location/etc.

Um wasn't that was he was doing? The Iphone right next to it was getting blazing fast speeds compared to the tilt..

Got my ISP to work after 45min talking to tech support.
After selecting AT&t ISP click edit
Click edit again once the second page opens
Name for connection should be AT&T ISP GPRS, click next
Access point name - isp.cingular, click next
These are the settings that had to be changed
User Name - ISP.CINGULARGPRS.COM
Password - CINGULAR1
Domain - keep blank
Make sure both the PW & User Name are in Caps
Click Advanced
Check "Use server- assigned IP address
Check " use IP header compression
all others on the page are un-checked
Click OK
Click Finish
Make sure to Restore Hidden Proxy
It should work after that!!!!:)
Update: Don't know why, it worked flawlessly 2 times connecting to the Internet, now it's back to the same cannot connect message. I give up!

So I deleted all my connections, yet when I try to make one called "AT&T ISP GPRS," it says, "A connection with that name already exists." What's the deal?

After searching through numerous forums, the general consensus seems to be that isp.cingular was available to unlimited data plan users at one time. Since GREEDY ATT added a tethering plan, the ISP network is only available to those subscribers who have added tethering to their "unlimited" plan. I can't explain why it briefly worked for me and then stopped.

being that nobody has been able to suggest any changes to my settings to increase speed, I wonder if it might be a radio issue - I tested with another Tilt and recieved similar results, which would indicated that it's not the stock equipment.
I wonder if swapping a ROM packages (with different radio) might help. Are those of you who are running non-stock ROMs seeing faster data speeds?

I'm in the process of moving and thanks to AT&T being a bunch of a**holes, I don't have AT&T in my new house, so they were kind enough to kill my service in my existing house w/o telling me that I have no service in my new house.
The good news is I'm now using ICSControl to share my isp.cingular 3G connection over WiFi (w/64 bit WEP even) and I consistently see 2Mbit in my location.
As for your question regarding the radio and stock vs. non-stock ROMs, it's always been the same for me in the past on WinMo 6.0 (1.5Mbit to 3Mbit depending on signal strength and locale). I haven't had a standard AT&T radio since then, so I can't tell you about WinMo 6.1 radios...
Hope this helps,
Alex
Edit: Almost forgot, I'm running 1.71.09.01 now on WinMo 6.1 custom ROM and it kicks the crap out of any 3G iPhone for throughput, as Youtube always works in areas where the iPhone can't hack it.
