DESCRIPTION
This tool allows you to communicate mobile devices using your GPS and SMS messsages with no internet connection. You will be able to know how far is another phone/target and what direction you need to follow to reach it
Imagine the scenario... you are hiking with some friends in 2 different groups and later during that day you guys want to meet. How do you do that if you got a poor reception and you don't have an internet connection?
This is what happened to me a few days ago. I got signal only for a few seconds and when I tried to make a phone call it was dropped after a while because the quality was very bad.
This program allows you to add targets. You can request the position of these targets by sending a sms message.
If your PDA cannot send the message it will keep retrying every minute.
Once the other end gets the message, CatchMe will start the GPS automatically, get a fix and send a message back to the person who made the request. Again, if there are problems sending the message CatchMe will keep trying until success.
After getting the position of the target, you can start tracking and CatchMe will tell you how far your target is and what direction you need to follow.
OTHER FEATURES
- You can only receive requests from phones that have been added to your list. If you get a request from an unknown phone, the message will be discarded.
- You can also associate your current position to a target. This is useful if you want to mark a checkpoint to come back later. No SMS messages are sent at this point.
- In order to use this with another person, both persons need to run this program!
- You don't need to be tracking when using the program. You only need to do that when you are following a target.
- Auto Start and Stealth modes available
Notes
If you plan to test the program using only one phone, don't click on 'dismiss' when getting your own SMS message until CatchMe has processed the message, otherwise the message will be deleted before the program can access to it.

I hope this program can be useful for some people!
Please leave your comments, suggestions and ideas here.
Have fun!

I just uploaded a new version that also gives you the the estimated time left to reach the target. It also shows kilometers/miles when the distance gets bigger.

Hi Staryon,
thanks for this new software! That's a really good idea. I wish I had today, because a friend of mine could not find us at the beach :p.
I eagerly look forward when most of my friend have a winmo phone. This tool is just perfect.

If this gets popular I may write compatible versions for regular phones (no windows mobile) so more people can use it.

Woo that would be awesome. But what do you mean by regular phones?
I mean to have a version of CatchMe that can run from phones that are not running Windows Mobile.
At this moment you can still request a position from a device running CatchMe from any phone just by sending the sms catchme|0

Some more information about how CatchMe works...
When CatchMe receives an SMS will check if the incoming number (for example +336abcdefghi )
CONTAINS any number that you have in the target list. For that reason, CatchMe will find the target if you have 06abcdefghi, abcdefghi or any other combination in the list. The reason is done this way is to avoid conflicts with prefixes.
On the other hand, when the program tries to send an SMS it will dial exactly what you see in the target list.

Hi,
When CatchMe receives an SMS will check if the incoming number (for example +336abcdefghi )
In the very last version (0.2.2.4), CatchMe refuses numbers with an international prefix. As incoming SMS messages appear with the international prefix on my phone, and as the local number is not contained within the interational number, I have no way to specify a correct phone number in the target list.
i.e.
Incoming SMS messages appear as +336abcdefghi
Local number is 06abcdefghi (notice that 06abcdefghi is not contained within +336abcdefghi because of the 0)
If I try to add +336abcdefghi (which would be correct, I can send SMS messages to these numbers with the Windows GUI), CatchMe refuses. If I add 06abcdefghi, CatchMe doesn't recognize incoming requests because of the +33. And if I add abcdefghi, CatchMe sends the messages to a non-existent number, because the 0 is missing.
In my case, as with all other French users, the only way to have it work is to allow people to enter an international phone number. I don't see why this is a problem anyway and I see no valid reason for CatchMe to refuse this.
Regards :)

well done man can't wait to try it out, i was very impressed with your track me, i hope this is as good as ur previous release on track me
PS: (does this support singapore numbers? or is it limited to some countries?)
_LEM_

As you just said the number that you use to dial is always different from the incoming number because of that extra digit.
Even if I allow to enter a number with the country code like +336abcdefghi
it wouldn't work because when CatchMe dials that number it wouldn't contain that required 0 that you need in France.
The only way to fix this is to write a specific rule for French numbers. If I detect that the incoming numbers starts with +33, I should add a 0 after that and then the matching will work.
I'm not sure if there are other countries with this problem as well.

It should work for any countries... unless your country has the same problem than French numbers.

Bonjour Staryon,
Thanks a lot for this new software.
The problem is always existing with french number.
In fact the rule is the following :
Il we use the international number : +336abcdefgh it doesn't contained the 0 number. and when we receive the SMS from a french phone, it is identified in Catchme with : +336... without o number.
When we (may) use the national number we use : 06abcdefgh.
In my case, I have entered all my phone numbers in an international number (+336abcdefgh) due to the fact if I am located abroad I can use directly the number phone for calling.
Are there other people from france to confirm ?

Hi erays,
With the latest update French numbers should work ok.
Basically you just need to enter your phones (targets) with this format: 06abcdefgh
By the way, international phones won't work. The library that I use to send sms messages doesn't work with those. So you can only use this program inside your country.

This sounds like a very interesting application.
However after entering a valid TARGET (completely numeric) I can't send my position without receiving an error "Config, You cannot sned a request to a target that is not numeric".
I've even deleted the original datestamp entry and still get the error.
I'm using a Touch HD - any ideas ?

You're right. I just found a bug. Just download the program again and the problem should be fixed.

can u please explain further more.
I have a kaiser and my brother has the 5800 Nokia(which has GPS).
So if i send the msg to his number, it will reply with his exact location on my garmin?
So its obligatory for the other number to have GPS.
One more question, If both phones have GPS. Isnt there a way if both parties activate their GPS, they could track each other? Using both GPS as tracking devices?

Hi Staryon,
I tested your app right now, by sending an SMS to myself.
- I entered my number (0151blablabla)
- Click on the "Sent SMS" icon
- CatchMe says that's it's sending the request, with a second appearing short after "Request sent correctly"
- I then receive a kind of flash SMS titled "Message from Network: catchme|0
You said in the first post not to dismiss it, so I waited, but nothing happens. Am I missing something? Is it a problem like the French numbers?
Numbers in Germany are similar, wihtin the country you have to type in 0151... (for example). International prerix will be +49151...
How does the SMS one receives shall look like btw? :). Is the SMS "Message from network" a bug or something?
After CatchMe analysed it, what shall happen? The Phone sends a SMS to answer the request? Is this transparent, i.e. does one sees it (confirmation etc.).
Sorry many questions but it's really a cool soft :D.
Greets.

That's something it can be done, however I thought that the goal of this program is to use it when you don't have an internet connection.
But yes, maybe that's something I can add as an option.

Yes, but both devices need to run CathMe, otherwise it won't work.

Yes, otherwise it will impossible to determine its position.
One more question, If both phones have GPS. Isnt there a way if both parties activate their GPS, they could track each other? Using both GPS as tracking devices?
Yes, you can do that just by sending position requests from one phone to the other. Once the phone get the position of the other party, you can track it using the small navigator that I included in the program.

When CatchMe receives a sms that says catchme|0 it should start your GPS and try to get your current position. In the CatchMe's log window, don't you get some text saying that a request has been received?
I don't think your problem has to do with the same one of the French numbers because otherwise you wouldn't get that sms.
And yes, when I test this using my own phone, I also get a 'Message from network' notification.
Is there any chance that you can test this from a different phone? You don't need a PDA, just send a sms from any phone to yours (the one running CatchMe) with the text catchme|0
Hope it helps

Hi,
I tried sending myself SMS with Skype (I configured Skype so that it shows my number when I send SMS with it).
Here's what I can report:
- when I save "151xxxxx" as a number in CatchMe, CatchMe accepts the request from my "own number" from Skype (which I guess is broadcasted as +49151xxxx or somthing), but it can't sent the SMS with the info when it has a position, it says "unable to send to 151xxxxx (SMS send failed). It seems quite logical cause the first "0" is missing
- when I save "0151xxxx" in my contact, the SMS is ignored, it say the person is not in my list
- when I save 0049151xxxx as well :)
If I sent a SMS to myself using my own phone using "0151xxx" in CatchMe, like I said it's sent and received, but it won't start logging and so message in shown in CatchMe (like "request has been ignored" or something).
Hope my explanations are clear :p.

Ok, in that case, yes, it's the same problem than with French numbers.
I just made a small modification for German numbers and I uploaded a new version.
With this change just keep in mind that when you add a target the number should have that "0" included. It should be like "0151xxxx"
Please try it and let me know if it works this time.
Thanks

Hi Staryon,
now it's working, I saved "0151xxx" as a "target" and when I receive the SMS, everything's work, the SMS is sent with the coordinates. Thanks !
However, when I received the SMS, I made something else at home, let the phone goes into standby by itself (screen off after x minutes). When I hit the power button, the SMS was away :(. Could there a be a kinda feature to save in a list the SMS :)? Would be handy!

deuzeff,
That SMS is intercepted by CatchMe (it uses the same functions that I have in TrackMe) so it won't be available in your list of sms messages. Actually your phone shouldn't even tell you that you got a new sms because CatchMe intercepts it first.
EDIT: Actually, I was not completely right. It will tell you if you send an SMS to yourself but that sms is lost as well.

Ok I get.
I just tried again (using a third-party, in this case Skype SMS). When I receive the SMS, I see:
Message from Network
catchme|1|53.3333333333 8.7444444444444
(not the exact coordinates, but someting like that :D).
But then the message just stays here and nothing's happening :).
I just tried to send myself a SMS using my phone itself, I can send the request, receive it (catchme|0) but then it's hangs on catchme|0.
(damn you're going to hate me, I'm annoying today :p).

2 more questions if you dont mind.
1-Will the other party need to start his GPS manually or will the msg sent by me will automatically start the other parties GPS?
2-whats the difference btwn catch me and track me.

deuzeff,
I just tried to send a sms message from Skype to my phone with the message catchme|0
For some reason the message that I got in my phone was catchme@0
therefore CatchMe didn't intercept it. Very strange... Maybe Skype doesn't like those characters.
deuzeff
4th May 2009, 10:02 PM
That's strange, when I send catchme|0 with Skype I don't have any problem. I don't even see the catme|0 notification, catchme starts logging my position transparently.
The process works perfectly until I receive the SMS with the position (catchme|1|long lat). This SMS I can see it, I get the standard Windows notification. At this point only, nothing happens :p.
(Add., seems to be a small glitch, I think only a display bug: cathme says: Received position request from +490151xxxxx. It should say +49151xxxx :) ).

Do you have any plan to make a symbian client?
Many symbian phone has GPS in recent days, it will be very practical then and could be widely used.

Otherwise I'd prefer to work on something else.

Hi Staryon,
I assume you use the same GPS routines as you do in TrackMe, since CatchMe stays resident in memory after exiting the program, just like CatchMe. Did you find a possible cause yet?

I haven't checked on that yet. Actually that's something that it seems that only happened a few people. Maybe it has to do with the ROM that they are using, I don't know.

Staryon,
I am super-excited about this app, as it sounds to be exactly what I was looking for. Unfortunately, the messages I try either by sending the SMS to myself or to my wife's PPC, do not get intercepted by Catchme. Instead, I get the Network Message prompt with catchme|0 in the body.
Now the interesting thing is if I directly send an SMS message either to myself or my wife's PPC with the catchme|0 in the body, Catchme DOES intercept the message, processes it and sends it back to the "requestor". However, the message with the location data has the same problem, where it does not get intercepted and I get the Network Message prompt. :( It is almost like the messages created with Catchme may have a formatting bug (extra spaces or something) or maybe the filtering logic with the phone numbers. It definently does seem that Catchme cannot intercept the messages it creates.
I am using Touch Diamonds (US unlocked version). I am with T-Mobile in Hawaii and even though this is my home network in the US, the numbers always come in with my country code (e.g., +18081231234). Not sure if that has anything to do anything, but wanted to provide more info if its helpful. :)

It's difficult to see what's wrong, maybe it has to do with the provider.
I assume you are running CatchMe in both phones, right?
Do you get any error messages inside CatchMe when a message is received?
Also don't close that "Message from network" window. If you do that CatchMe won't be able to process it.
At this moment I cannot do some more testing because I only own one phone. I would really like to test it with other providers.
If I end up doing that, I will post any updates here.

Staryon,
Yes, both phones have Catchme installed and running. Catchme never processes the message when the Network Message prompt comes up (waited about 5 mins) and that comes up when the "requesting" message is created by Catchme. If I manually create an SMS message with the "catchme|0" in the body of the text, then I get no prompts at all and Catchme shows the received message in the log and starts GPS then sends a message to the "requestor" with the position data. Of course the "Catchme created" position data on the "requestor's" phone does not get intercepted and shows the Network Message prompt instead. :( This happens either on my own phone (i am the requestor and receipient) or if I use two phones.
It is a strange one, that's for sure. :) It seems that there is a difference in messages created by Catchme (requesting and responding) and SMS messages manually created with your message string to trigger Catchme.
I have also tried different formating of the numbers used (with area codes, without area codes, with a 1 before the area code and without, etc.) to see if that made a difference. Unfortunately, the behaviour is the same.
I am definently willing to help you solve this if there is anything I can do or try or other info I can provide, as this app would be REALLY handy. :D
What is the format of the requesting message when you want the GPS data from a phone (I mean literally how Catchme itself formats it), and also what is the "CONTAIN/filter" logic for an incoming message that Catchme lets in?

Hi,
First of all, congratulations on your apps.
I've been seeking for a loooong time now for a app like this. The only thing I could fin was:
GPS.PI (http://www.jgui.net/gps/gpspi/index.html)
Phonetracker (http://www.phonetracker.de/projects/phonetracker/CMS/Content/119)
Mr Tracker (http://www.mrxsystem.com/features.htm)
OXI2OZI (http://www.frada.net/ozi2ozi/ozi2ozi.htm)
TWIG (hardware) (http://twigworld.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=1_45&products_id=103)
The key features I'm looking for are:
1- Make no use of GPRS or 3G because in some contries like mine (Portugal), GPRS is very expensive.
2-Ability to recognize a GPS string on a sms so that we can use any variety of tracking devices with different sms composition, instead of being hard coded for 3 or 4 devices.
3-Ability to integrate with tomtom navigator or any other navigation app, in a way that our destination (our last sms), is being automatically updated.
If i'm on a persuit of my traker, the last thing i need is tomtom needing to update by hand the updated destination point.
I think this could be very useful to allot of people:
-Follow your stolen car and apply a teaser gun and then pepper spray the burglar in the eyes.:D
-Follow you cheating wife:eek:
-Follow your missing dog
-Follow your missing children
-Start a new career has a private investigator.
Thanks a lot for the reading and I hope Staryon find my suggestion interesting enough to develop CatchME.

At this moment I don't plan to go back to CatchMe again since I spending my free time on TrackMe.

However, I will consider your suggestions for future updates.

It seems to be an issue with port sharing on your PDA.
I would recommend you to take a look at the FAQ for TrackMe.
TrackMe and CatchMe basically use the same core functions and in that FAQ you may find a solution.
It's located here (check the first 2 issues)

REQUIREMENTS
Devices running Windows Mobile 5 or 6 for Pocket PC or Smartphones
Microsoft Compact Framework 3.5 Download from here (http://luisespinosa.com/bin/trackme/NETCFv35.wm.armv4i.cab)

Have fun!

I think your phone runs on a Symbian OS. CatchMe is only for Windows Mobile devices.

Hi ameenillusions,
No, you need to have the program running on both devices. Otherwise they don't know how to communicate each other.
Cheers.

Hi Luis,
I lost my HTC Touch HD today (temporarily thankfully). I spent a couple of hours panicking, walking, driving, etc when I eventually found it lying in the grass. I think your app would have saved my a lot of time (and heartache). Testing so far has revealed one problem: the international code replacing the 0 on incoming texts (like the earlier French issue). Would you be able to apply a patch for Australia too (+61 code)?
Cheers,
Mark

Hi Luis.
Thanks for the rapid response :)
Removed old version and installed new one. Still having problems
I sent a message from my son's phone and Catchme comes up as:
"Received postion request from unknown person "My son" <+614xxxxxxxx>"
I have a HTC Touch HD running Wm6.5. CallID is set to match 8 the last 8 numbers which is why I think his name comes up even though it refers to it as unknown. His number is entered in my contacts as 04xxxxxxxx.
Cheers,
Mark

hmmm... If the number appears like +614xxxxxxxx , that fix that I did was unnecessary.
In CatchMe the number that you add to the list should appear exactly as you receive the message, which is 614xxxxxxxx or +614xxxxxxxx (try both, don't remember if I check for the plus sign)
However, after that fix that won't work because you are not receiving the phone number with a zero added, so you need to use the old version again.

Very well done!
How about showing up the target position in Google Earth?

Thanks for the suggestion! but the idea was to have an application that doesn't require an internet connection.

Perhaps it could be implemented as a plugin in TrackMe? That would be awesome and extremely useful.
