View Full Version : [MOD] Add 3G Switch to Comm Manager - 3G Toggle - (Black & White Available)

I scoured the web for a decent looking 3G icon in CommManager and they were not pleasing to the eye. I am NOT an artist, in fact I suck at it :) but mine still look better than the alternatives and I provide the black and white CAB of the images to match most themes.
Here is my 3G icon CAB for Comm Manager based on this post: http://www.fuzemobility.com/how-to-disable-3g/
Why do you need this? Because turning off 3G makes my Touch Pro (AT&T Fuze) battery last longer, about 2-3 days instead of having to charge daily. Low 3G reception areas cause the phone to keep looking hard for that 3G signal. EDGE network is a trade-off, my other software has support have plenty of web browsers (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=382043) that are optimized for low-speed, so I only turn on 3G when I truly need some internet speed.
Only for GSM phones
Does not work on Touch Pro 2 or Diamond 2. My guess is it will no longer work for newer devices as HTC has disabled this hidden feature in Comm Manager. Use my app, JZ SmartMort which has a macro/script to turn 3G on and off. It's the only thing I can offer for newer devices.
It will replace whatever button is in the 5th position (look at the screenshots below), usually "Microsoft Direct Push" is in that position.
To restore Microsoft Direct Push back to position #5 in CommManager, you can do either of the following.
Uninstall my CAB and it will reverse the single registry change.
Using the Advanced Config Tool (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=418151) (Right-Menu -> More Settings -> Comm Manager) the order of the buttons can easily be changed.
Modify the registry for that 5th button HKLM\Software\HTC\CommManager\5\(Default) change "3G" string that my CAB put there to "AUTD", which basically means MS Direct Push.
The most important thing that the CAB provides is the four images that will end up in \Windows folder. After the CAB is installed, you have to kill CommManager.exe if it's running or take a reboot before seeing the new button/image.
This will work on VGA, QVGA and other devices running the "Diamond" or "Opal" version of CommManager (verify with screenshots below) and it should work on all ported versions of CommManager as well.
Tested on:
HTC Raphael / Touch Pro / Fuze
HTC Tytn II / Kaiser / Tilt --- (needs HTC CommManager like shown below not the original blue Microsoft one)
Enjoy!

I ripped this white 3G button with a circle around it from Da_G's WM 6.5 Kitchen (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=474406).
Above you see how it looks and from the attachments this is CAB that you would want (http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=180021&stc=1&d=1240640028).

Did you install one of my CABs? If so then why is 3G button not in the 5th position? I also noticed that your signature says that you a Kaiser / Tilt, which is a QVGA device. I just tested my 3G CABs on a QVGA device and they work just as good as on VGA devices, so this can't be caused because you installed my CABs.
Re-install your Comm Manager from links below, obviously stick to QVGA.
Full QVGA version of CommManager:

Full VGA version of CommManager:

Lastly, please don't use this thread for general questions unless you installed my CAB's and it's causing problems. There are plenty of Question & Answer threads/sections on this forum to post your questions and this answer was easy to find with the following google search terms "comm manager qvga xda" and "comm manager qvga xda diamond"...
Thanks!

Interesting, I don't have Touch HD so I can't say for sure but some procedures below should hopefully answer this popular topic of HD.
Have you tried going into Advanced Config Tool and following the instructions from the first post to change CommManager button order around?
I'm pretty sure that I've seen Touch HD with the same CommManager as Diamond/Fuze uses so it seems as if it should work.
Post screenshots if possible... of CommManager and Advanced Config settings. I want to see if the button present or grayed out, etc... It's hard to assess anything w/o this sort of info.

Looks like a neat piece of software!
Two questions:
1) Will it restore the default comm manager when uninstalled?
2) Is there a way for localisation (ie show some other text than English)?

Great question!
No, it will not return button #5 back to "Microsoft Direct Push"... You would need to use Advanced Config to change the order back... I guess I could create a CAB to restore back but Advanced Config is a popular utility, I would expect most users here to have that handy.
An uninstall will probably delete the image files from \Windows and leave the user with a blank button.
EDIT: look at the first post for a restore CAB which you should run after uninstalling.

I tested further and found out that my CAB will put the registry setting back to MS Direct Push when my CAB is uninstalled. This is the registry value: HKLM\Software\HTC\CommManager\5\(Default) = "AUTD"
Again, the answer is YES my CAB will put reverse the single registry change that it makes, I forgot about that general feature of CAB files.
I'm pulling the useless "restore" CAB from the first post.

Is your Diamond CDMA or GSM?
Keep in mind this is not a hack, this is default functionality for that Comm Manager. My CAB simply changes one of the buttons to a predefined string in the registry, not something that I came up with. The only thing that I provide is the images... take a look at this website and you will see that this is a known mod for these devices but only GSM not CDMA versions of the devices. I will change the first post to reflect that.
Take a look at this thread, this mod has been out for a while:
http://www.fuzemobility.com/how-to-disable-3g/
When you use this mod w/o my CAB, the button will still work but will have an empty image which I certainly did not like, hence my effort.

Very strange that it's not working for you. It certainly works on my Fuze. When I turn 3G on, the "H" icon in that TaskBar appears (when the reception is there, of course) as soon as I turn 3G off in CommMgr, only Edge or GPRS ("E" or "G", respectively) show up in my TaskBar.

Please check in Phone Settings what type of connection is active when you select 3G in comm manager.
In my Diamond:
3G OFF
First Option: GSM
Second Option: Auto
3G ON
First Option: Auto
Second Option: Auto
In your case maybe when the first option is set to Auto the first type of connection that fuze can estabilize is 3g.. if you are in a area where you have a low signal of 3g maybe you see connected on gsm network

I have the same settings as you under the Band tab in Phone options when I switch between 3G on and off...

The easiest way to know it's working is to turn 3G ON and see what the battery level is at the end of the day, it will be low about 45-50%... then turn 3G OFF for a day and my battery is around 75% at the end of that day.

I see that it not working because i normally use GSM, i use 3g only for internet connection.
If i use 3g the internet connection is more fast than gsm.
if I set the option to auto it connect to GSM (Internet go slow), if i set the option to WCDMA it connect to HSDPA, i dont know why.

Why would you set your phone to WCDMA if you use a GSM phone? Maybe I don't know what I'm talking about but WCDMA has CDMA in it :) that's Sprint and Verizon --- GSM (HSDPA/HSUPA) is AT&T and T-Mobile

Because for internet 3g is more fast (0,2 mbps vs 2 mbps).
If I set in phone Setting GSM Netwok diamond connect only to GPRS and EDGE network (normally use of the phone).
If i set WCDMA network diamond connect only with UMTS and HSDPA network.
I would like that when i select 3g button in commManager diamond connect to a 3g network, but not work. :(

What exactly are you trying to achieve? If you think that you can make that 3G button do anything other than what it currently does, then the answer is no you cannot. My CAB only activates a button/function that already exists in CommManager, nothing more. Or you want to "force" 3G connection? If reading correctly, I believe that "Auto" does not do what you would like it to do... that's a phone/radio problem that you would need to try a new radio for (possibly)... maybe another OS or a Hard Reset will also fix... mine auto-switches properly and it did the same on many ROMs and Radios... some just better than others at that function though as expected.
I just did some research and our phone is WCDMA capable... I finally understand what you're trying to achieve but that's more of a scripting (MortScript) task or .Net excutable, or just pop open the band page just like you currently have to do.
Fuze Stats from here (http://www.letstalk.com/htc-fuze-platinum-package-att), funny how LetsTalk.com gives identical definitions for Technology and Data Technology:
Network Technology
Technology (http://www.letstalk.com/glossary.htm?paId=1342) WCDMA 850/1900 + EGSM 850/900/1800/1900MHz
Data Technology (http://www.letstalk.com/glossary.htm?paId=2373) GSM: GPRS, EDGE, UMTS, HSDPA, HSUPA
My suggestion, if you want to know what reg entry gets changed when you flip the options on the band page, just take a full registry dump, then change options, then another registry dump. Then use windiff to find the differences...

I would guess you have to kill cprog.exe and restart it... that's the EXE that runs the phone functionality. The easiest way to do this is with .Net or a MortScript.

Then I'm not sure what needs to be re-invoked or bounced before your band settings actually take. Cprog.exe killing then restarting (by pressing the talk button works) is the only thing that I know of that resets the radio/signal.

Does this tool work with Topaz (Touch Diamond 2)?
Thx.
Again, I need to clarify... this is not a tool. This is just an activation of something that is a part of HTC CommManager... activating this cannot hurt your device. The CAB changes a single registry entry and adds two images under \Windows directory. Uninstalling will revert it back or Advanced Config can be used to re-order the Comm Manager buttons. I suggest writing down the value in this reg location: HKLM\Software\HTC\CommManager\5\(Default)
So, the best thing to do when deciding is to go to the first post and compare the screenshots against your CommManager, if it looks like the ones in those screenshots then there is a good chance that this will work for you. Take a soft reset though.
Please post back letting me know if it does work so I can add the device to the first post...
Thanks!

3. Softreset
4. Comm Manager looks ok with icon in text in 5th position (btw: Below the six options there is blank space enough for a 7th position)
The button on the right shows the right status, tested with GSM and AUTO.
-> But the button doesn' work, nothing happens besides button's push-animation. Doesn't change the color.
5. Deinstalled the cab. After softreset Comm Manager looks like before.

When you flipped it on/off, did you see a difference in your taskbar. Meaning:
If 3G is turned ON - then you will see an H icon in your start menu which sometimes steps down to Edge, then down to GPRS at times.
If 3G is turned OFF - then you will see Edge and GPRS only, H will never come up. This is where the battery gain is... HSDPA is battery heavy.
Last but not least, if you use this utility, it will tell you if internet speed is fast or slow (based on the numeric value of course) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=395165 -- this way you will know if 3G/HSDPA is active.

No, i didn't. No change from gsm <-> 3G/H in both directions.
Maybe this is important:
When i change GSM <-> Auto manually through "Band" Tab in Windows Mobile, everytime i will be asked in a pop-up window:
"If you change the bandset-preferences, PDP-context/datacall will be deactivated. Continue?" (here translated from german)
Only if i confirm with "yes", the change to GSM/Auto happens. The questions appears at changes in both directions.
Could this be a problem?

I don't think so, that's just default Windows functionality when that setting is flipped it asks to confirm.

This does not seem to work on my Diamond 2 (HTC Pure) either which means that HTC changed their CommManager to no longer have this hidden hack. Only on Fuze, Diamond & Tilt it seems to work.
The only thing I can suggest is to install my app (in my signature) which has the option to deal with this exact setting... meaning turning 3G off and on.

I'm going to clarify again... read the first post of this thread... what I provide in the CAB is NOT software, I make a slight registry modification and give you a JPEG as a graphic. The registry change is simply enabling what CommManager is programmed to do but HTC just didn't ship with that button enabled.
Now, read one post above yours and you'll see that for some reason on new HTC's and Windows 6.5 this function does not work anymore and you'll see more about my other app. Otherwise just enable the band tab: http://www.google.com/search?q=windows+mobile+enable+band+tab
Thanks!

You're of no disturbance :) there's a way to do it... I sent that google search to you as this is the built-in Windows Mobile method. It should easily meet your needs.
