View Full Version : [TASKBAR] Customising Windows Mobile 6.5 Taskbar
Mr. Makk

NOW CREATE YOUR OWN TASKBARS EASILY (http://winmo.techparaiso.com/how-to-create-custom-taskbar-icons/)
As this section is specific for Windows Mobile 6.5 Taskbar Customisation, I'll Start it with my set of icons. I tried to make full use of the ShellRess.dll and if more is needed then i'll make sure more icons are covered.
Just have a look at the screenshots and you will understand how much capable WM6.5 taskbars are with more scope of customisation including the OK and X buttons.

Just click on the screenshot to download the cabs from my personal thread for Taskbar Customisation. You surely wont be disappointed.
There is alot more to come.
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Install Sdkcert.cab
2. The Taskbar version you want.
3. If you using WM standard dialer and Bluetooth icon doesnt shows up, Install wmdialerBluetooth.cab(Davey101).

Hey I own a new thread ok, I'll perform my civic duty and explain a little about the WM6.5 taskbar.
I myself have made a taskbar that fully covers the WM6.5 taskbar. There are a couple of differences in wm6.5 over wm6.1:
- shellres.192.dll now has signal strength bars (5 bars) we can edit, and it seems to also be controlling the bleutooth headset icon, set rest of the icons are simial to wm6.1
- tapres.192.dll controls G, Ev, 3G, H, E, X1
- HTCVolumecontrol.dll : Volume icons
- Outres.192.dll : Message icons
- Notify.dll.0409.mui : Alarm icon
- GPSAux.dll : QuickGPS Icon
Since HTC used the the phcanOverbmp.dll to skin the pin dialer and add extra icons to the taskbar, I used this dll to do the skinning of the WM6.5 taskbar. Which worked out perpectly. For this dll to be used you will need to import these reg entries:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Security\ResOver\Bitmaps]
"BaseDll"="phcanOverbmp.dll"
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Security\ResOver\Bitmaps]
"BaseId"=dword:00000000
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Security\ResOver\Bitmaps]
"BatteryIconIdStart"=dword:000003e9
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Security\ResOver\Bitmaps]
"BatteryIconLevels"=dword:00000065
I have attached a my Taskbar art package here, which contains my latest taskbar makeover (WM6.5 only), This package can also be used as a reference for which files to skin, For the cooks: remember to delete the HTCVolumeControle.dll from the volumecontrol package otherwise it will overwrite my skinned one.
http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/6453/taskbarartv3.png (http://img12.imageshack.us/my.php?image=taskbarartv3.png)
I will freshen this thread up with some pictures tommorow, and I'll add a cab too
Hope you are now well informed about the current status of taskbar engineering, 12

tsowentaskbar WM 6.5 (based upon my taskbar 6 elite v3)
12AON has really help pioneer the way for the WM 6.5 taskbar so huge props to him and also thanks to MysticGenious and others who offered to test and evaluate my files. Here is the updated WM 6.5 version with the dll's straight from WM 6.5 (only for those running 6.5) with this version GSM users now have colored bars. As always same rules apply as any other taskbars when installing the cab. Any bugs or problems please report back. With this new release most all the icons are controlled by the shellres.192.dll file such as battery and other icons that were located in the phcanOverbmp.dll as far as can be seen WM 6.5 does not come with a phcanOverbmp.dll but will read the file if installed. I have elected to install the file because with the new shellres only 9 battery images are located in the file verses the 101 battery images in the phcanOverbmp.dll. Please use the same Registry settings that 12aon has quoted above. Refer to this post for updates and future versions of my taskbars. Hey im just about to do this now, but i noticed something else weird, i have just uninstalled your taskbar6 v3.1 and upon doing so my pin entry pad has changed to use my skin for the windows mobile dialer (not the HTC dialer)
Is it possible that something in this taksbar is altering the PIN pad? if so we may have found a way to skin it!!!

Another thiink i have just noticed is that when i uninstalled your taskbar, my waiting symbol has changed back to the windows 6.5 version.

I'll test it out and post screenshots in a few minutes. I am using a 6.5 ROM built off of JD's 21198 kitchen. I'll ask him if he concurs with that assessment of the phcanOverbmp.dll and the 6.5 shellres.
Just with shellres added:

This if from someone at PPCGeeks on CDMA who I had test out the shellres and the resluts. So two different results so far with CDMA and GSM.

Dang I missed this post, ahh okay that gives me some ideas now! Looks like the shellres is controling most everything as 12aon said in a PM. 12aon take a look at the new shellres I posted and base it upon this picture and you will see where we are at. I think your right the battery might be the bmp's inside the shellres.

The HTC PIN dialer skin is located in the bitmaps ind the HTCVolume.dll
OK I think I have found all the Icons in the WM6.5 taskbar:
Shellres.192.dll : Signal bars, sync icons, Wifi, 3g (G, Ev, 3G, H, E, X1) syncing+receiving data icons, battery Icons
tapres.192.dll : G, Ev, 3G, H, E, X1
HTCVolumecontrol.dll : Volume icons
Outres.dll : Message icons
Notify.dll.0409.mui : Alarm icon
GPSAux.dll : QuickGPS Icon
I haven't checked all off them but I'm pretty certain these are the icons for the GSM taskbar, 12

12 so for bluetooth is it still a bmp in Windows?
Edit: Also thanks to everyone for trying these files and reporting back. I am not GSM or WM 6.5 so I am mainly taking a stab in the dark here but hopefully we can get it all worked out.

outres.192.dll

Hey Guys..
With HEFMAN's idea am opening up a seperate Windows Mobile 6.5 Taskbar Customiszation Thread..
The WM6.5 ShellRes is provided below for others to work on..
Currently Many Developers like TSOWEN, MYSTICGENIUS, HEFMAN, ADWINP, etc. are Working on the new OS Taskbar and coming with great results.
I request all of them to Come Here and work together seperately for Windows Mobile 6.5 Taskbar.
I'll Update This Page Will the results the developers come out with on this platform.

I doubt it because the dll's are different.
when we skin these dll we do not change functionality of the dll just the icons inside it nor do we change how windows reads the dll.
for WM6.1 no-one has found how exactly the signal bars are rendered which is why no-one has managed to change them yet.
If you want my advice, move to a 6.5 rom!! they are much faster, well mine is much faster anyway!!

I've hardly contributed anything as a dev, but thanks for the props... ;)
That said, I offer up my first contribution, which is basically just tsowen's WM6.5 shellres with a colored start menu icon added. If you've installed tsowen's dlls from the other taskbar icon thread, just replace your shellres with this one.

I arrive at this thread with a dilemma. I tried installing tsowen's dlls on my 6.5 cooked ROM, and I couldn't figure out why all but my signal icon remained "stock" (I put that in quotes because they actually look like the 6.1 icons, for a reason that will soon become clear).
And then, a post by 12aon from the other thread enlightened me. The HTC Dialer I'm cooking in. It includes, of course, phcanoverbmp.dll, which somehow ends up overriding the 6.5 dlls. But, when I tried installing tsowen's original taskbar, I got the other icons, but no signal bars. There must be a way to have both, right? I wonder if I could just leave that dll out - I bet that'd break the dialer completely.

I believe this should work on any WM6.5, although some have reported issues if they installed an HTC dialer. I can't confirm, since I'm running a stock dialer.
Anyway, to install, get tsowen's other files from this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=3603812&postcount=1335
Except... replace his shellres.192.dll with mine before copying all the dlls to the Windows folder (using Resco Explorer or Total Commander).

When you say "tsowen's original taskbar", do you mean the one for WM6.5 that he came up with the other day? Or, are you talking about one of his earlier taskbar sets, like tsowentaskbar6? Anything that was out prior to Friday won't work on the signal bars in WM6.5. If you've tried the new files and they don't work, you could be right about why. I took the HTC dialer out of my WM6.5 ROM, so tsowen's new files work fine for me.

Thanks, 12!
I installed your taskbar, and it looks to be working correctly (for the most part). I only have a few issues:
I use the Rhodium Volume Control, so installing your cab would get rid of it, I bet, since it has the option of a single/dual control, and the Vibrate/Silent buttons are reversed. My solution to that, of course, was to remove the HTCVolumeControl.dll from the cab, which worked fine.
My "OK" button is nowhere to be found. I have an "X" on every screen now. I noticed this when I tried tsowen's 6.5 dlls as well.
So it seems that for 6.5, there will need to be 2 taskbar versions - one that includes phcanOverbmp.dll, and one that doesn't?

Maybe this will fix my issues, I have a problem where the htc dialer that was cooked in replace the signal bars from the 6.5 with th 6.1 style, wondering if maybe overriding with the stock dll's will do the trick or if maybe i need to do some regedits. even with the htc dialer disabled and the stock being used the icons are still the same, hopefully someone will be able to help me find a solution.

Here is the updated WM 6.5 version with the dll's straight from WM 6.5 (only for those running 6.5) with this version GSM users now have colored bars. As always same rules apply as any other taskbars. I have elected to install the file because with the new shellres only 9 battery images are located in the file verses the 101 battery images in the phcanOverbmp.dll

Well the good news is the default wait icon has returned. A few issues I've seen so far are no EV icon and bluetooth. My network icon wasn't skinned either. I'm using FuFu ROM 4.5.3.1 Lite. on a diamond

Have a different type of question in relation the WM6.5 taskbar.
I am running a rom that included WM6.5 as well as Rhodium TF3D. If I use the Titanium home screen my task bar is transparent (even with custom wallpaper) but when I switch to Rhodium, my taskbars go black.
And when I'm using TF3D and bring up the honeycomb Start Menu, the taskbars are transparent in the Start Menu, but return to black for TF3D.
I've tried switching themes (from HTC Black) and just leaving the wallpaper from the them active, and using custom wallpaper from "My Pictures". I can't seem to get transparent taskbars in TF3D.
Is there some kind of work-around? Is this just my rom? Anyone?

I think the tranparents is a feature by the titanium ...
so... it doesn't work in TF3D

I actually like the trasparent bars better as well, though it seems to have an adverse effect on the Bluetooth icon (see screenshots). I personally prefer the Black top/bottom bars in Manila. Also, in my Wireless Today plugin, the BT icon appears as an empty circle (I changed the Wallpaper so you can see it better).
P.S. This is after installing tsowen's WM6.5 taskbar that he very recently posted in this thread.
EDIT: One last note - My "OK" button has disappeared and is now an "X" on every screen.

Here's the screen shots
PS: I don't have HTC dialer install.. so there's no bluetooth on task bar for me....
just 3 questions...
1.do I need to replace the dlls. after I installed the cab ? (or do I need to doit the other way arround?) or I just choose replace or use the cab ?
2.does this version came with the number of the % of the batteries left ?(if so... maybe it just mine doesn't work....)
(3)... the in charge icon looks a bit weird... (Pic1).... bcoz WVGA ?

Thanks MG this helps a lot, I am not sure what is up with the Bluetooth and need to figure that out. For the transparency I will have to work those and come up with a fix. The call history since the phcanOverbmp.dll was added I think it is taking over so I will need to look at a fix for that as well. Almost there my man!

Hi,
nothing to do with your request, but i think your shellres is messed up.
it works, but you know ive asked 4-5 times to have a particular start orb, well i decided to do it myself and add it to your dll and it cannot be opened.
I have tryed with restorator and it will not open and i have also tryed with RESHACK and that gave me access violations.
please can you tell me whats going on, or put the orb i want into the shellres please?

I don't think so because my cab puts those entries in there so your phone will display all the added icons from the phcanOverbmp.dll see originally the phcanOverbmp.dll only contained 20 battery images and the rest were added in there. This is what we need to do with the shellres.192.dll from WM 6.5 because as 12aon said with WM 6.5 there is no phcanOverbmp.dll but if placed in there the phone will read it, however with that being said this is where some of the conflict is now coming from such as the call history icons being read now from the WM 6.1 phcanOverbmp.dll and others. As for bluetooth I have sent a PM to 12aon trying to figure out where this icon is. I seen it in the shellres and have skinned it but as you posted it is now showing up, others have posted and it shows up for them so maybe its how the ROM's are being cooked. With WM 6.5 most everything is now being controled by the shellres.192.dll file with help from the tapres.192.dll and the outres.192.dll files. MG is this the icon you had for your call history?

MG, I was able to edit tsowen's newest shellres for a colored start menu icon, so I know it can be done (see screenshot). I'm sure tsowen will get around to it, but I've posted my shellres, if you want to use it. Or, if you have a specific graphic you want, I can give it a go.
BTW, I've been digging around for the resource that has that hideous HTC quickmenu icon in it, but I'm not having much luck. The HTC task manager uses resource files called TaskmgrCustRes.dll and taskservice.dll, but the icon is not there. Anyone have any other ideas where this bugger might be?

Ok,
this is a weird one. i uninstalled the taskbar, restarted and my device had standard windows icons etc.
i decided to check the call history to see what it looked like and this is what i found.

It turns out you hadnt skinned the call history, what i saw was just the standard icons.
I have seen the icons that do this in the shellres.dll for WM6.5 close to the top if i remember rightly!!

It is being worked on, we have just started working on WM 6.5 taskbar's but I assure you my man gadgetfreak from PPCGeeks will be working a QVGA version, also you are correct in some sense the images are smaller and should take up less space which would save memory.

I have something weird going on with the Large Title Bar.
When I press the top bar, to get the System Status Menu, and I'm connected to data, the signal icon displays both the "H" indicating my data connection, and a phone icon. Is there a way to fix that?
Also, as you already know, the large icons are very fuzzy/distorted. Is there an easy way to fix this? I know aruppenthal's RRE ROMs have been updated to correct this problem. Is the issue just that the images in the Large Title Bar dll need to be a higher resolution?
P.S. I attached a screenshot below of the issue I'm taking about. As you can see in the first pic, I'm connected to Data (you'll also see I was able to fix the "OK" button, and the BT icon in the Wireless Today plugin).

I hope you realize the absurdity of what you are assuming. Why would anyone go through that much trouble to steal a thread, when you can just start a new one. It's just a simple product of merging threads. I hope there is some way you can be restored as owner of this thread, but in the mean time my first post better be useful right? I do also hope you realise that this is a community though you may not be owner of this thread for now people are still being helped, and you can still be of service like you were. As I said in a PM, I'm still willing to update the first post according to your preferences. But I am thoroughly not amused by your way of handling this, although I understand that your upset. So from this point onwards I will consider the air cleared and I will hold no grudge whatsoever, I hope you will come to see that I am really one of the good guys, 12

Let me clear the air a little here, I merged the threads from the original Taskbar thread already out there since you decided to create a new one, when merging threads they automatically fall in chronological order as they were created. A new thread was not needed just specifically for the WM 6.5 taskbar and technically its not even in the right forum as this is not HTC Diamond specific but I let it slide and merged everything in the previous thread mentioning WM 6.5 taskbar items. Therefore, there was no misusing of authority nor will I except taking shots at other users nor myself in public or through PM as you sent me. 12aon happened to land on top and he edited his post for the community and everyone else in the thread explaining what this thread is about. Now with that being said a simple PM to myself asking me to restore you as the creator would have been suffice verses the manor in which you handled it. Now if you wish to be restored as the owner of the thread I sudgest you contact me through PM otherwise the thread and owner will stand as is.

Ok, so I figured out the problem with the Bluetooth icons -
There are actually TWO bmps that WM 6.5 uses to display the BT & headset icons on the Transparent home screen. One is the standard file, i.e. "BT On Mode.bmp", and the other is a background file, "BT On Mode Mask.bmp". The Mask file is the negative/transparent background of the regular file. The Mask files will need to be provided along with the other files in order for the BT top bar icons to display correctly on the standard transparent home screen. Otherwise, the system will use the previous (stock) Mask file, which cause the distorted image.
P.S. I think this might only apply for people using the HTC Dialer, since those files are found in the same package as the Phone Canvas.

Work around for the battery images since WM 6.5 they are located in the shellres but only 11 icons are included so for those who wish not to use the phcanOverbmp.dll due to the dialer skin take the old phcanOverbmp.dll and delete all the bmp's and icons other than the battery images which should be 101 images starting with Icon Group 1001 now save the file as phcanBattery.dll make sure your registry is set as below:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Security\ResOver\Bitmaps]
"BaseDll"="phcanBattery.dll"
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Security\ResOver\Bitmaps]
"BaseId"=dword:00000000
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Security\ResOver\Bitmaps]
"BatteryIconIdStart"=dword:000003e9 (Hex) or 1001 (Dec)
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Security\ResOver\Bitmaps]
"BatteryIconLevels"=dword:00000065 (Hex) or 101 (Dec)
Make sure you double check and you deleted everything out of the .dll other than the battery images. Tried the above mentioned technique and it worked correctly.

Hi there Tsowen, I've installed this on my 6.5 Rom and have a problem with Single Volume Control.
Any ideas?

Did you enable the default skins for the volume control or the dialer pad? I had this problem a couple times. iI changed the skins on the keypad and volume. Diamond Tweak has the option for the volume skin , it's best to leave everything HTC style for now. Never did see what the default wm 6.5 volume looked like. I got some weird "HTC Volume Settings, Do Your Volume Settings" message and it didn't allow for any options.

I'm on the HTC volume control but its something to do with the HTCVolumeControl.dll file. I've found another from a previous top icon set I had working, but it does change the volume icon after loading, but thats just cosmetic. I'll attach in case others have the problem.
On another note, anyone got this version with the HTC logo as the start menu? Looks soooo much better with that.

As an addendum to my previous find, I believe that a side effect of anyone using the stock WM6.5 dialer along with tsowen's of 12aon's taskbars will be that the Bluetooth icon will not display in the taskbar.
The reason for this is that each of their taskbars includes phcanOverbmp.dll, which seems to override the BT icon info in the shellres.192.dll. This dll looks for the BT icon bitmaps in the \Windows folder (both the icon, and the Mask background file), and in the absence of the Mask bitmap, on the standard home screen, no icon will be displayed.
I can confirm this because I tried deleting the "Mask" bitmap files prior to cooking my ROM, thinking that it would just use the regular bitmap files, but instead, I have no BT icon show up on the top bar.
If you are not using the HTC Dialer, I recommend following tsowen's suggestion regarding the battery icons. This may also correct the BT icon issue, since I don't think those bitmaps are part of the standard 6.5 install. Someone who is using the stock dialer will have to test it, though.
So maybe its a good idea to have 2 separate taskbar versions after all - one for people using the HTC dialer (including phcanOverbmp.dll), and one for those using the stock dialer (using phcanbattery.dll). Of course, we still have to work out all the kinks, yet. But progress is definitely being made :).

Some guy on craigslist was trying to sell some taskbar stuff that myself along with others had made and was also copying an iPhone theme made by Torx at PPCGeeks, claimed it took him hours to write the code. Craigslist has pulled the ad down so I posted this on the first thread to cover all developers who are creating work here in this thread:

I have edited it abit so my details are not showing, but do y ou think i should make a "Standard XDA Dev's" Anti-Theft Banner for Everyone/Anyone Developing artwork here?
I think that this could be used in a few ways:
1: you should put this into the head of your DLL's, assign it as an unused icon, i dont know if you can make it so that the dll is corrupted when it is removed?
2: You should also post it in the first post of the thread
3: It should be included in the zip file with the CABS.
this will make everything copyrigth to this site (If i have XDA-Dev's on the banner somewhere)
Shall I Go Ahead and create the XDA Developers Copyright?

Yeah I think we can display it in the first post and should cover the entire thread and all the artist within the thread.
Yeah you can just give screen shots of the BT and Stero if it works and also the speaker phone icon. Also can you post or email that Start Icon you had for when I go final with the release of the taskbar? Also if you see any other icons missing or not working right let me know. I am not sure if you read a few pages back about my idea with the phcanbattery.dll and leaving out the full phcanOverbmp.dll basically just taking the batter portion of the phcanOverbmp.dll and saving it but renaming it phcanbattery.dll and having the registry point to it to read the batteries. I think this would help with the Dialer . Anyways I will work on that tommorow and post for those who are not using the HTC Dialer.

Hi guys, really appreciate all the work you're doing.
I do notice that some icons are sometimes not making full use of the canvas and so they appear tiny especially on our 2.8" screens. Just as some advice, would it be possible to keep the icons as big as possible so they are seeable to the eye. Oh, and sometimes the the numbers or smaller icons like 'x' on Tsowen's speaker icon when it's silent is bearly noticeable. Just some constructive criticism.
Thanks a lot once again.

Thanks for the feedback, when working with an icon that is 32x32 it might seem kind of big on the computer screen but once shrunk down to fit on our screens you loose a lot of detail that's why sometimes just plain colors tend to stand out even more, also using like refelctions, shadows or adding numbers you loose space as well because you still only get a space the size of 32x32. Many people asked me to use the battery icon with the reflection and put the % in the middle of the battery but the end result was a lot smaller battery than looked weird when compared to the other icons. This is still a beta bar but I will see what I can do.

Ok guys here is my first release of my WM 6.5 Chome Taskbar. I have used the base of tsowen so if the network icons look familiar that may be why. ;) Thanks to the guys i asked stupid questions who were willing to answer them for me.
The screenshot is a bit blurry from the program i get the screenshots from, but i assure you the icons are not.
download the .cab here:

2. New Voicemail,

Some things that I notice is that firstly the G icon is possibly (you would know better) not as big as it should be, as the speaker icon seems to take more room. Another problem I notice is that the bars on the world icon denoting reception are not as visible especially on our small screens. This is even moreso the case when the reception is 1, 2 or 3 bars. Another thing is that when I change the sound profile to Vibrate, a small 'V' comes next to the speaker. This 'V' is barely legible, and is not noticeable at a quick glance especially. Another thing is the WiFi icon which I'm not sure if it could be made bigger since it is quite wide, but also, when it flashes, the green and red flickering is difficult to tell (at least for me.)
Just some things I picked up. :)
Thanks very much!

ROFL!!!
these icons are all 32x32
if you want to resize all i suggest you get to opening the dll's and re-editing all (roughly) 300 icons that go into these things and then you can stretch them out of shape as much as you want.
im sorry but if all your moaning about is the size of the icons sort it out yourself.
the icons designed by myself and the others here look sick end of story!!!!
you are the first person EVER on BOTH threads to come out with something as pathetic as that!!
i mean are you sat at home measuring the icons with a pixel ruler?

Its not just you nitro! I did double check with a friend and it did the same thing on his. I am working on tracking down the problem, but what is making it so difficult is that its working just fine on my phone, so i have no way to tell if these changes are fixing anything, other than waiting on a tester i have, and he wont be around much today. Anyone want to volunteer their services for a couple tests? :)
I took the link down so nobody else has to reset their phone because of me. :D I will be working on this all day, and will release Beta2 version ASAP. In the mean time I apologize to those who did have this problem!

Before I start, this is nothing to do with your artistry skills. Who said I'm moaning? It was simply your deranged judgement. You asked for some screenshots, so I gave it and explained what I thought was small. No moaning; just advice. You don't have to do anything and I understand that, and that's why I gave helpful advice. Keyword = advice.
I don't want you to change every icon, but I thought maybe it's something you guys (well evidently not you in particular) could bear in mind for the future since with such small icons every mm does count. Would making a customised set of icons catered to my personal style more fit your liking? Nah, didn't think so. The Windows icons, though dull, are all very clear, and that's why I don't need a new device for such a reason.
Really I don't feel like praising you for anything after your tantrum, but I'll take the higher ground, and say, yeh those icons are sick, but not all of them are entirely practical. And that's my honest opinion.

I am on the Romeo WM6.5 (check my signature for the correct version). i had the WM7 Titanium customization installed so I uninstalled it to make sure it wasnt causing the problem and so thats why the screen shot doesnt show Chrome.

I can do some test today if you want me to. I have done multiple tests on different roms here and so Im used to dealing with errors..lol.
If anyone installed this taskbar, the easiest way to remove it is to connect to activesync/mobile device center and uninstall it through there. this way you wont have to hard reset or install a new rom. jus in case this hadn't occurred to anyone.

Maybe?
it seems funny that the TB installs but shows NO icons at all, like the reg values for the icons have been nulled!!

i stil dont understand what the problem is, if you have a diamond, you should be able to see exactly what I see.
I have no problem seeing the red x or blue v displayed in silent or vibrate!!
also the problem with designing an icon to use the full 32x32 results in bad edges, and the icons would end up touching each other.
Would making a customised set of icons catered to my personal style more fit your liking? Nah, didn't think so. The Windows icons, though dull, are all very clear, and that's why I don't need a new device for such a reason.

no offence to anyone but it is possible to cover 32x32. i had always stressed on doing that and my icons are full 32x32 size with no bad edges.
also about the issue with blank taskbar- as far as i remember i once downloaded all the dll files of tsowen and copied them to windows folder. on restart i got this problem. dunno what wrong i did but this is all that happened. but the question is that no1 has reported a prob wid tsowen's cab. as yet.

most all my icons are 32x32 with little to no dead space between this is why I said I don't use refelections or things of this nature. For the speaker why have the V or the X take up a huge footprint on the image? The V is clear and visible on my Touch Pro. Your not going to get some huge looking graphics out of this and I am not going to edit one or two little things when something has not been an issue in the past.
As for the blank taskbar nobody has ever reported any problem to me about this and I have had many both CDMA and GSM users test both WM 6.1 and WM 6.5 so it might be some user error.
Lastly remember WM 6.5 is still Beta and not final it has not even been released yet, just like at the last minute M$ decided to abandon the honeycomb from what I read so things will change. This is a development thread and these bars are still in the development stage so do not expect perfection yet. Should have an updated cab out today or tommorow with the Ok and X skinned, GSM network icons fixed and also some other icons I haven't skinned yet added. Also I will be supplying two cabs one using the phcanBattery.dll file I made for those who are not going to use the HTC Dialer Skin and the other using the phcanOverbmp.dll for those who will be using.

hi,
we know this, the phcanOverbmp.dll is not used in WM6.5, most of the icons now reside in the shellres.dll, but when you put the phcanOverbmp.dll into WM6.5 for some reason it starts taking icons from the dll.

To elaborate on this a bit phcanOverbmp.dll is not yet in WM6.5 because that dll is made by htc and the WM6.5 ROMs on the forum are plain Microsoft ROMs. In the tachi WM6.5 oems there is an wm6.5 version of the phcanOverbmp.dll, but this version works a bit different pin pad wise and doesn't add much so it's easier to keep using the old one. Hope this clarifies things a bit, 12

Hey guys! Thanks to the help from all the skinners who answered my noob questions while i was figuring out the skinning process. I have started a WM 6.5 TB, using tsowens latest 6.5 TB as the base. Here is just a taste both so you guys can see what im working on, and so i can receive some constructive criticism from those that have been doing it a while.

I have a question. I am using sprint diamond, I cooked a rom using calk kitchen. (6.5 no manila). This is the icon my phone is running http://i39.tinypic.com/jae1jo.jpg http://i41.tinypic.com/2qnrv4x.jpg(Blocky, smaller antenna icon)
I tried to replace shellres.192.dll with sashimi (I have no idea how to put this into SYS or OEM and get the kitchen to run through w/o error). It doesn't change it. What do I need to do?

Really nice, but the icons for 3G, E etc are really nasty (IMO) you have really nice glossy colour icons but they do not fit the colour scheme at all.
you could use my network symbols from tsowens taskbar if you like, they would look much nicer.
very nice work though :D:D

Hello everybody
I have read and tried a lot about modifying taskbar icons by now however, I still don't get one thing to work.
What I tried to do is to have the receptions signal displayin a specific icon depending on what data network the phone is in and the bars along with it.
Say if you're connected to 3G it would show the 3G logo as well as the reception bars, like it was in the LargeTaskBar.dll with WM 6.1
I learned that the bars are taken from the shellres as well as the icon displayed.
I tried to poit the registry back to LargeTaskBar.dll once I created and copied the file. However, without success.
Now I was wondering how I can do that, as I saw some people here have made more or less the same.
Has anybody a hint o solution for me on how to achieve that?
Thanks

Sorry to sound sarcastic, but you two are the only people in this thread since it started that have said this, which makes me think that there is really no problem for everyone else.
your both have the same screensizes as everyone else, and we all have eyes. I can see my signal perfectly, may i suggest an eye test or a device with a bigger screen.
the globe has been behind the signal bars since THIS THREAD (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=437307) started in October 2008.
Sorry nothing is going to be done about this for you, if you want it changed do it urself!!

Or maybe everyone else just takes a look and decides they don't like them and moves-on elsewhere without commenting, like I was going to until I spotted your post.
The problem with being a creator/author of some design and/or content, is that you can often get lost in the overwhelming fanboi responses, and think the room for improvement feedback is in the minority. Most often though, the room for improvement comments don't come, as the people just go elsewhere - such is the world of lots of choices.
If you haven't already guessed, I agree that the globe makes them too hard to see, and am going to look elsewhere for something that appeals to me. I wouldn't have even bothered posting as such (what's the point), other than to highlight my comments above.
I think the best accolade for a skin/taskbar designer would be to work with a ROM builder and get your design included in the ROM directly.

I seriously doubt that because i can see how many times each file has been downloaded (well the ones i host anyway) and they are going like hot cakes!!

No, i think you will find, the good thing about being a designer is that we can use our creative talent to make sweet icons that everyone loves and uses.
we do take suggestions etc but we dont have to react to all of them. that is the nature of being the designer.
this is not a shopping channel, if you dont see something you like you have no room to complain.
you 3 are the first 3 people in nearly 1 year that have mentioned this, so on a customer basis i would rather cater to the masses because majority rules!!
It is like the situation with virus designers and MAC's, why write a virus that can only attack 4-6% of the world? for most effect you would write it for PC so you can attack everyone and get the biggest effect
(again i reitterate the point that we all have the same screen res-so we can all see the same thing) and i have to say, if i found it hard to see my signal i would re-design my icons, but since no-one (other than you 3) have a problem with them, ill be leaving the globe in, because without it there is a big black space on the taskbar which needs filled.
lost in the overwhelming fanboi responses
you seem jelouse that you cannot do this for yourself.
go buy CS4 Masters, and make your own if you like? no one is stopping you, ill even help, and we see what juicy goodness you have stored up?
people just go elsewhere - such is the world of lots of choices.
unfortunately you are wrong! this is the only thread ive found on this forum which caters to WM6.5 taskbars, so your statement that people go elsewhere is complkete bull as there is nowhere else to go!

Sorry to sound sarcastic, but you two are the only people in this thread since it started that have said this, which makes me think that there is really no problem for everyone else.Im sorry, I didnt realise I wasnt allowed to post my opinion. You might want to have the thread title changed to reflect that.
your both have the same screensizes as everyone else, and we all have eyes. I can see my signal perfectly, may i suggest an eye test or a device with a bigger screen. You can suggest it, but i have 20/20 vision. There is nothing wrong with the icon, its just not visual appealing to me when I have to spend more than several seconds trying to see how much signal Im receiving when it only takes a slight glance to see what band Im on. Thats all, nothing more or less. As I started my sentance taht you quoted, its very very nice.
Sorry nothing is going to be done about this for you, if you want it changed do it urself!!Thats fine, I dont have to install a taskbar on my device that Im not 100% satisfied with. Im glad that people are downloading them like hot cakes, but I will bet that not all of them have it installed, or installed it at one time and since then it has been removed.
Thanks for sharing them though, but you must agree that what you post will be either appreciated/installed or ignored/bypassed or somewhere in between. If you dont like 3 people posting suggestions, then maybe you shouldnt post them at all and just have them on your device and be happy with it. Thats just another suggestion though... and you probably wont like that either.

I almost didn't say anything, but this topic became kind of hot, so I figured I'd weigh in and try to explain what I think.
I like the fact that we GSMers can finally have colored signal gars, thanks to WinMo 6.5. I also LOVE all the options as far as custom task bars go. This is not by any means a complaint; more of an observation. I'm not a taskbar designer myself, so I will leave the discussion on this to the experts.
I'm using (mostly) tsowen's 6.5 taskbar (w/a few substitutes from sunny's taskbar), and I noticed that the "regular" signal bars (when not in a call, or when connected to data) are a bit smaller (and thus harder to see) than the in-call bars. The regular bars are definitely readable, but the in call bars appear to be darker and longer (i.e. easier to see), especially when there's low signal (and I happen to be in a constant low signal area). So my only question is, would it be possible to use the in-call signal bars throughout? If I could do it easily, I certainly would, and if what I'm saying is completely unreasonable, then forget I even said anything. But I thought I'd mention it/point it out and at least see if anyone has seen the same thing. I've attached screenshots so you can see what I'm talking about.

As far as I know for GSM it is just the one set of bars located in the shellres.192.dll file the opperate both, as far as the rest of the suggestions please keep them comming, I might not respond to them all but I do read and take into consideration. I have an updated version of my bar that I have due out any day with some custom icons I made myself. Some of the icons have been corrected and are 32x32 all the way with no waisted space, also updated speaker icons and a few others so please know if I don't post a response it does not mean that I didn't see it. I have also fixed the network icons as well and thanks to my bro 12aon he has added a border around the ones when you are connecting to E, G, 3G etc...
Please remember this is a work in progress because WM 6.5 is not even out and I am not even running at the moment nor am I GSM so most everything is a stab in the dark and I depend upon everyones feedback here.
For CDMA users having a problem with custom ROM's and signal bars not showing up please check your registy for the following string it should look like this:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Security\ResOver\Bitmaps]
"FuncDll"="CDMA_RSSI_PPC.dll

Hi tsowen - those phone (in call) signal bars are actually stored in the phcanOverbmp.dll. But the phone is part of the picture with the bars. I was just wondering if those bars could be used in place of the ones that are in the shellres.192.dll (since they fill up the space better). Its no biggie, though. Thanks for the response.

Check my release post, I have 2 different versions of each taskbar. For those of you who were ok with the gray signal strength icons, its still there. For those of you who can not see the gray well I have made some changes. I took the gray bars, made them taller, so they take up more of the space of the icons. I also added color! I was trying to make it as easy as possible to glance at your phone, and see how much signal you have. First i tried making each signal bar a color, first bar red, orange, yellow, green, bright green. This didn't look right as it was just too many colors in a tiny spot to glance at, and see exactly what was going on. My second try, which i figured was what i was going to have to do. I made all signal bars the same color, according to how many bars were showing. 1 bar showing its red, 2 they are both orange, 3 they are all yellow, 4-5 are green. So this way you can just glance at your taskbar, see what color all the icons are, and automatically know how much signal you have.
Try it out, i really like the way it turned out. Let me know what you guys think!

One question. Is there really way to change the HTC task manager icon? The last icon on the right. I've search for a whole day and can't really find my answer. I did try to change quickmenuico.bmp in windows but no luck.
Or anybody else have the answer? I'm using miri v10 6.5 rom. Many thanks in advance.

Would you (or anybody who knows) tell me where I can find them ?
Many thanks.

Dude. Come on. Use search. Here, I'll even help you.
Try "Search this Thread", and use the term "QVGA". Look for a post by CraZyLiLbOy (http://forum.xda-developers.com/member.php?u=406165).

Actually, the answer is, they will work but do not look as nice as the pics on QVGA devices. Unless they are specifically made for QVGA they are very hard to read and are grainy.

The CORRECT answer is YES they will work on a qvga device, all of my taskbars have been converted by gadgetfreak at PPCGeeks and looks and works perfectly fine. The only thing you have to do is resize the images to work on a qvga device. For a qvga device the icon has to be 16x16 verses a VGA device which uses 32x32 this is the only difference between the two. Gadgetfreak is working on a qvga WM6.5 taskbar from my Taskbar 6. Click the picture in my signature and it will take you to my taskbar collection thread on the top of page two you will find the link for his QVGA taskbars.

Thanks tsowen, looking really great.
Eventhough the speaker looks cool, the cross over them when the phone is silent is too tiny, at least on my diamond's VGA. Is it possible to increase the size of it?
Thanks again and keep up the good work!
BTW: I'm using your version 6

Hi!
I was looking for the answer, but no luck.
So my question:
Is it possible to change (incrase) the space between the clock and the TaskMenager?
Is there some registry setting for those spaces?
Thank You.

Ok,
this is a weird one. i uninstalled the taskbar, restarted and my device had standard windows icons etc.
i decided to check the call history to see what it looked like and this is what i found.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=177093&stc=1&d=1239923861
It turns out you hadnt skinned the call history, what i saw was just the standard icons.
I have seen the icons that do this in the shellres.dll for WM6.5 close to the top if i remember rightly!!
MG
Does anyone has this callhistory icons in a cab?
ONLY the callhistory icons in a cab file?

when i had 6.1 i was using icons by FInixNOver the Battery icons only cab from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=424926
I have been using this cab on 6.5 so far as it works with the new icons only appearing occasionaly (during startup mainly) but as they look pretty much the same as the old ones it isnt very obtrusive. I like the new more rounded H, E and G icons and the new wifi icon. If someone could create a theme that is the basic theme but with a percentage battery icon it would be great. The one in the cab mentioned above is just a fat battery shape with numbers in it showing ther percentage, no colour. i like this as it makes it easier for me to change colour scheme regularly as i like to.
Cheers

The Finix cab installs phcanOverbmp.dll, and uses that for the battery meter. Unfortunately, that also takes over the signal icons and some other stuff when installed. I made a cab for someone using 6.5 that has a DLL (much like tsowen mentioned earlier in the thread) that just has the battery icons. That way it'll leave the shellres icons alone. Here's a link to that post:

So I have customized my taskbar with my own icons and would like to make a CAB to simplfy install. However, when I make a CAB with Quick CAB and try to install on device, it always fails. I am assuming because it can't overwrite the files in Windows. I have to do it manually by renaming the file with .bak, soft reset, then copy new file and delete old. Could someone please point me in the right direction on how to make a CAB to overwrite the DLLs and not get a failed to install error? Thanks in advance.

I'm using Miri v14 and just installed tsowentaskbar6 WM6.5 version.cab.
After reboot the taskbar-icons have been replaced (ooh, pretty :P ), but my battery-level is not shown correctly. It's full green while there is actually only 15% left.
I looked at the registry-settings you gave in the startpost and compared with the ones in your cab-file. They appear to be the same so I don't think I need to change anything myself? Did I miss something? :)
[edit]
Did some more testing, apparently the icons are not getting updated. When I do a softreset with the power plugged in, I get the charging-icon.
When I unplug the power, this icon remains until I do another softreset, and so on...

Hi.
Just two short questions. Would it be possible to change the postition of the startbutton, for example, put it in the middle of the bar? so it would be easier to reach with the thumb if you are righthanded :-)
And would it be possible to increase the size of the close (x) button, so it can be pressed easier (with the thumb) without accidently hitting the volume key?
Thanks for answers!

Very well done Taskbar and congratulations.
I have tried it on my USA Sprint HTC Touch Pro and do not get any icon for an active or inactive data connection (only a space). Can you advise if this is because my phone is HSPA with evdo rev 3 and you have not coded for this.
Thanks

I just updated to 6.5 tonight. I tried using my old 6.1 custom start icon not knowing if it would still work or not. It does display, but displays smaller than normal, squished almost. I thumbed through a few threads and couldn't find exactly what to change. Is a new res needed for 6.5, or something different?

Hi tsowen - those phone (in call) signal bars are actually stored in the phcanOverbmp.dll. But the phone is part of the picture with the bars. I was just wondering if those bars could be used in place of the ones that are in the shellres.192.dll (since they fill up the space better). Its no biggie, though. Thanks for the response.
Thanks for this...I finally have fixed my signal bar issues with 6.5
