This problem is related to hardware, radio and band selection algorithm of your BA. You will never face this issue if you downgrade to WM 2003SE.
I faced this issue for over an year, I also looked at internet for a possible solution but none was of use. I visited other countries for a month with my phone loaded with WM6.x and when I returned back to US, surprisingly roaming icon had GONE and I never see it again.
I am not saying that the solution lies in visiting other countries :)
Hope my home made remedy will work for you. You need a sealed metallic box. Switch off your phone>Open the cover of metal box>keep the phone inside>switch on the phone>immediately close the lid of the box tightly>wait for 30 minutes>Open the lid>switch off the phone>Take out the phone>Switch on the phone.
Let me know if it works. Ensure that box definitely seals any radio signals going inside with the lid closed, else it wont work.
Best of luck. Try few times, you might succeed. (Assumption: You are not in roaming zone of your SIM card)

I think i figured it out, I have T-Mobile, had it for a long time, the SIM card is an old Voicestream, I see the roaming icon...
I have my personal phone (modded Razor), also T-mobile, but it's newer, has the T-Mobile SIM card, try that card in my BA, no roaming icon, put the Voicestream card back in, icon comes back.
Guess I'll have to get my office to get me a new SIM card, we'll see how that works.

No I'm using an xplode ROM, and the one before that was also xplode, and it was happening then, i just didn't notice it, actually when I went from WM5 to 6, i didn't know it wasn't supposed to be on all the time.
