Same here... Tried installing to the device memory and memory card... Tried flv, mp3 and jpeg files in the device memory and memory card.
My device has a wierd resolution though (400x240... Samsung Omnia). My localization (PT) also uses some uncommon chars (like ã and ó) in the name of some drives (though the device memory dirs don't have these and still didn't work).

You have to install the .net compact framework before you can use ffplay.

mccoffein what device are you using the player in? Is it runnining WinMo 6.1? Or are you running it in the emulator?
I already tried installing to the "Program Files" folder in the device memory (reboot after installing). Tried to play an mp3 from the root of the device memory. Even tried using WVGAFIX3 to set my screen res as regular QVGA (320X240) before launching the app but it's all the same. NET 2.0 is in ROM. These should have excluded localization and resolution issues... Can't get it to play anything in my device.

I tried many different files(.avi(Xvid), .mkv(h.264), .mp4(h.264), Photo(jpg), music(mp3, wma)) but nothing works.
I have a cooked wm6.1 WWE Rom so there shouldn't be any problems.

That seems to be the problem :)
Just tried an mp3 and an flv1 file with names without spaces located on the root of the device and they finally played. Opening a jpg crashed it. Also tried an flv4 but it didn't work... This ffmpeg ffvp6 source (http://nsft.108shiki.com/soft/) was used to give flv4 support to TCPMP. Maybe it could help if you want to add support for this format.
The flv1 was a bit jerky (and the file was just a 780 kb with a res of 320x240px)... Can't really test much files because of the size (since they must be in the device memory).
Also noticed that:
1- Couldn't get out of the playing file screen (or black screen in the mp3)
2- Auto dim/suspend is not disabled by the player (and when it comes out of sleep the it's really laggy)

I succeeded opening a 3gp file and a wave sound file. It will not open .avi files for me - path always \Storage Card......
The big problem is that when it opens a file you cannot exit or stop the play. Also you cannot go back to Home screen. Once ffmpeg is running you are locked in and only way to quit is soft reset.
Tested on Touch HD WM6.5 and Polaris WM6.1.
Hope that helps.

I can't really get out of the palyer screen. Just cant minimize/close the SDL window... Maybe you could add a config to choose the buttons functions. Some of the newer devices don't have a d-pad (I have an Omnia and that's one of the things I miss in it). Is guessing more work is going to done on the GUI. I'd love to have some touchscreen buttons to control playback (something simple like in TCPMP).
Also if you're going to do a web video streaming plugin system I'd suggest you do a general plugin that use some sort of script file (text based) to give the specific commands for how to rip/stream files from each video site (one script per site... I suggested this for WVD (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=427702)). Siomething similar to PSPTube (http://dl.qj.net/Ultimate-PSPTube-2.0-PSP-Homebrew-Applications/pg/12/fid/26711/catid/189) (it has a couple of scripts... don't know if it can help in any way). It has the major advantage that updating the settings of a site or adding new ones doesn't require a recode or recompile, people with the knowledge can contribute scripts and the web streaming feature could remain updated even if you don't have time to do it (with proper community support that is). If you do create such a plugin then adding support for vp6/flv4 (http://nsft.108shiki.com/soft/) would be really useful.

Tapping screen works fine to exit movie so that's great. in due course vga/wvga support would be good and of course more control with the movie for pause/forward/back etc... Not sure how you would do that with new devices without a software control bar of some sort. Would be good to have it appear on screen when you tap display.

Seems to wok fine. Just notice that if forget to enable wifi and do a search it'll crash. Also I've run into some videos that crashed it though...
I suggest to give the option to select the quality of the video (mobile, normal or high). Usefull to select best option depending on connection speed or download limits.
About the player itself I noticed it crashes on WMV and lags on WMA. RMVB only has audio. Also my H264 mp4 files fail.
Hope a newer build of a more recent SVN fixes this. In the meanwhile using wma9procoder.dll and wmv9decoder (they are in Windows folder in WinMo 6.1 devices) could be an alternative. About rmvb I once found these files for WMP (http://rapidshare.com/files/237886346/RMVBcodecinPPC.zip.html) (currently useless for WMP since it supports the format... though badly).

Nice to see you're adding support for more sites. But rather than doing a plugin for each website wouldn't it be better to do (and update) a powerful generic video website plugin to handle all websites?
As I suggested before I was thinking in a plugin that would relly on a text based file (non compiled... so anyone can add/update a website) to give the instruction for how the plugin needs to works with each website. One config file per website.
We would use the plugin to select which website to seach (much like the way we currently choose the search parameters for YouTube or Daylymotion).

This files i have changed on the ffmpeg svn. I wrote a tutorial to build out ffmpeg for WinCE / Windows Mobile. The files are needed to do an successfull built. Thats the reason i post on download section.

Nice :) Another update!
I found this so I guess I'll report it (even though it's very trivial). It's in both video plugins.
There's a tiny aestetical issue due to the width (or number of text chars) of the result items from searches. It makes so that a horizontal scrollbar will show at the bottom.
It's a pretty trivial thing I know :p Should be easy enough to fix if you reduce the size by a couple of pixels (maybe one less char in the text).
http://img194.imageshack.us/img194/4050/bar.th.png (http://img194.imageshack.us/my.php?image=bar.png)
Also I have a suggestion.
I know that the search process is still slow but it would be great if you could view all the pages containing the search results!
Maybe not displaying them all at once (due to memory usage and search time) but in pages of 10 (or whatever) items.
You'd just have to add a small bar with the page number to the GUI so we could navigate.

http://img197.imageshack.us/img197/4424/screen01obn.th.png (http://img197.imageshack.us/my.php?image=screen01obn.png)
As for new websites maybe Google and MySpace videos (AnimeCrazy uses MySpace for anime episodes...).
Also because of AnimeCrazy I found this strange occurance:
1- Play a certain flv video in the storage card from AnimeCrazy in ffplay (not every file crashes... I captured this episode (http://www.animecrazy.net/fullmetal-alchemist-brotherhood-episode-9/) using FlashGot in Firefox...)
2- The video will crash and there'll be a crash report
3- Check the details of the crash report (I have these reports active for who knows what reason...)
4- After that the device would say to format the storage card (of course I ignored that).
5- The storage card is gone from every file explorer (not mounted?)
6- After a reset/reboot everything is fine again (storage card is fine... no errors found with checkdisk)

You got yourself an awesome device! Makes my Omnia feel old...
Now that you have a wide screen device you'll probably get the same small interface issues I do. Anyway here's a screenshot of the plugin selection menu:

Have fun with your HD :D
PS: Not topic related but check WVGAFIX (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=455974). It's a real life saver if you use any VGA apps that won't work in WVGA devices! I remember when I got my device I was so mad so many games didn't want to work...

It's an official Samsung rom with WiMo 6.1 (CE 5.2.20270 build 20270.1.3.1)
I reported this because of the scrollbars and empty space at the bottom (common issue in wide screen devices)... I didn't even know the images were suposed to be small... They used to be small but I think it changed in version 1.0.0.3 1.0.0.4.
My device is (W)QVGA. That may be the cause since my res is half of the Diamond. You have a Diamond and an HD?

Thanks for the update. Just a few things that are happening testing on a Topaz this time.
1. Still unable to open any url addresses as per my post no.47. Have tried mms and http protocols using wifi - can't afford data :-(
2. The plug ins are not so important to me but I tried the you tube one and when I open it I get a continuous process coloured wheel on the screen which does not go away until I press a menu button or search/play/info. It goes away after the message "no files selected" or "no files in the list".
The search on you tube worked but when I tried to play a file again I just got process colured wheel forever so had to cancel.
3. The download plug in icon is a bit stretched on WVGA device but the other plug in icons look fine.
Hope that helps. You have made good progress!
Edit: Forgot to mention when you open a plug in page the pop up menu is blank. Just an idea to have text in the pop up menu on opening so the user quickly knows where to look to take action on the page eg. "Select" or "Options".

1.Was not able to open .avi file MS error but no details.
2. Tried YouTube plugin and all worked fine. Downloaded a movie successfully but unable to locate it on storage card. I put \Storage Card as the download path.

1. \Storage Card. I am back on stock rom which uses NCF 2.0. Maybe that is the problem? Now installed the latest version on Blackstone of Nightly build and tried it with another .avi file and that also would not open and got same MS error. With the ordinary version on Diamond2 I could open one .avi file bit not a second one. The problem seems to be random with ordinary version. D2 also on stock rom using NCF 2.0.
2. The YouTube download has now appeared on the storage card. It took some time to appear.
3. Problems with all plug ins using latest version Nightly build on Blackstone when performing a search. I've attached screen shots. Did not try Dailymotion.

Sorry! No idea what happened it was on and can't remember switching it off. :o
Plug ins seem to be working although with YouTube i got a message saying it can't open url and then proceeded to the search playlist as normal once I dismissed this message. While playing video in youtube and metacafe I sometimes get a thick green line either horizontal or vertical on the video screen. Maybe to do with resolution? Just downloaded a file from photobucket and that worked ok.

Your player is handling flv files on my imate 9502 beautifully.
But...
How can I establish an "association" with your player? THat is, when I tap on a flv file it is automatically opened by your program.
I've tried and tried, but so far stuck having TCMCP as the associated flv player

A fork is not a bad thing, often projects are forked when the scope or intention of a developer deviates from the original idea. For example if the ffmpeg folks have no intention of doing any Windows Mobile patches or maintenance it makes sense to fork it. However there's always the issue of maintaining the code in parallel with the main branch in that case.
I haven't used your project personally, but as an open source user and small-time developer, simply being a fork should not be a problem for anyone.

The Trend of Developmend is not only here to see - there's a need of support much more plattforms than Desktop.
I hope you could go on with your very good work - perhaps it could be made "official" - so there's no more "fork" ...

Here are original answers from members of the ffmpeg devs in irc chat:
(15:54:48) mru: comment out a few trivial bits of code to make it build, nevermind if it works, then trumpet out how you've PORTED FFMPEG TO WINCE!!!11!
(15:58:40) mru: windows users are on avereage more stupid than linux users
(16:10:47) kshishkov: unless you are a troll yourself
Thats it why i close my work. I think it dosent matter.
Greatz
Sounds like a perfect reason to fork it, vs submitting patches. As I guessed in my post earlier today, they have no intention of accepting or supporting patches for Windows Mobile. My guess was nothing specific to those particular devs, just in general that's often the largest reason for a fork.
Honestly it does sometimes happen that someone will fork a program then not make it real clear that it isn't their work, but that's not the typical reason and I doubt it's the reason here.
Again, I hadn't used your program, but I hope your interaction with the devs isn't the primary reason for ending development. Will they help in the future if you have a specific question which may or may not be related to your fork? Who knows. But as it stands today it sounds like you have every good reason to have forked the code. Follow their original license, attribute the code, etc, and there are no legal or moral concerns.
Cheers, whatever you decide to do!

I can confirm that ffmpeg developers are a bit eccentric. For my work i made changes to ffmpeg so that it worked on solaris, irix, hpux and aix. I tried to submit these patches back to them and I was told that they dont support faulty compilers and c runtimes. This meant my company had to maintain the source changes themselves.
My advice to you would be to put your source code in either google code or sourceforge with the same license. That way your work is not wasted and if there is enough demand for it I could help you with further development. You could send me a private message if you would like that.

Hi, mccoffein!
Can you give me a hint with your configure script for ffmpeg under WinCE?
I used this:
./configure --enable-memalign-hack --arch=armv4i --enable-cross-compile --cross-
prefix=/c/msys/1.0/mingw/opt/mingw32ce/bin/arm-wince-mingw32ce- --enable-small
--disable-static --enable-shared --disable-mmx --disable-zlib --disable-ipv6 --
disable-debug --disable-ffmpeg --disable-ffserver --disable-ffplay --disable-en
coders --disable-network --disable-muxers --disable-decoders --disable-filters
--disable-devices --disable-protocols --disable-bsfs --disable-parsers --enable
-decoder=mpeg4 --enable-decoder=h264 --disable-demuxers
but i'm not sure if it's the best for performance (this is the only working, from all which i found) - decoder works too slow. :(
Where could i be wrong?
Didn't you met a problem with a slow video playing?

mccoffein, just for the record, you have every right to continue development. They've licensed their code under the LGPL, so as long as you comply with the terms of the LGPL, you don't have to worry about whether they approve of your project or not.
They sound like douchebags anyway, so don't be discouraged their whining as long as you comply with the license they put their code under.

There were so many open tasks with ffmpeg WinCE ... I dont know if it make sense to develop on this project in future.
The biggest problem is, that the player has no gui (Control Buttons).
And i have no idea to do this ... :(

A GUI was surely needed... That and merging the different processes (the main screen and player screen processes).
Ever considered borrowing code from the Nitrogen (http://code.google.com/p/microfi-nitrogen/) GUI/skinning engine? As far as I know it was pretty lite considering...
If not there's always the TCPMP (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=380387) or Pocket MVP (http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=f90ccbe673c34eab36df4e8dca141969e04e75f6 e8ebb871) GUI as examples.

I think he means if you could reupload the first versions of ffplay you published (before you released the source).
If I understand correctly seems like the ability to play flv4 (on local drives... not streaming) files was broken on the following builds...
Guess he had better luck than me since this format has always crashed in my device.
TCPMP can play flv4 (not brilliant performance though... Intel Xscale video mode seems the best one... at least in the Omnia):
TCPMP (http://blogs.shintak.info/articles/TCPMP.aspx)
FLV4 plugin (http://blogs.shintak.info/articles/ffvp6.aspx)
Replace the common.dll with this one (http://nvs.j-ynv.net/soft/common.dl) if you can't get the flv4 to work... Pitty it doesn't work with WVD (for that you need this one (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=3844802&postcount=366)... problem is it messes the player file browser...
