Are you familiar with the ASerg.12.w61 ROM? That one is very stable. He stop making ROMs for Wings after this ROM, so it is pretty archaic. In your opinion, which one of these two ROMS, Juststable V1, or JustStable V2 build 4, will give me less problems?
Thanks alot,
-Adam
I have only used my ROMs, since I'm a ROM cook. But from what I hear, it's pretty stable. I don't know which one will give you the least problems, since V2 was meant as an updated V1. The best thing to do for ANYONE is to TRY it and see if you like it and if it's stable for what YOU use. (Everyone has different needs.) That said, keep within build 4-6 with V2, the later builds became a little unstable.

You have to download the full fingerkeyboard. To save space on this ROM, I stripped out everything BUT english.

Hey Ivan, nice seeing you swimming around these waters... Coincidentally I just ran into a "fingerboard related" problem with JustStable... but it's more of a user-error thing. But for the sake of it, let me describe, because maybe you have a suggestion, or a theory:
In the "JustStable" lifecycle, I have probably flashed about 8 versions. About a month ago I finally flashed the final version you made, and it's been superb. Prior to that, it was maybe 5 versions before the final, and it too was great. The big difference in my usage of the ROM is that previously I had always installed PCM Keyboard, just out of habit, and because the first time I saw FingerKeyboard, I didn't have time to learn something new, like where all the key variations were, and how to copy/paste.
But after I flashed to the final version I think I asked you why you used FingerKeyboard, and you said something about it being newer and for most people better than PCMkeyboard. So I decided to use it... and finally took the time to look at the instructions, how copy/paste works, etc -- and immediately found out bow much better it is! But there was one thing: I wanted to try a different skin... and that's the subject of this post.
I quickly noted that in your cooked ROM there was just the default black/blue you chose, which was fine but I'd wanted to try the grey/blue. I looked around and saw I had to load a whole cab of a QVGA version in order to get more skin options; so no problem. But after installing the cab and restarting, I would get an error at each restart something like "error, couldn't find correct skin file" ... And I am pretty sure this would just create an endless loop I could never get out of even with a soft-reset.
Somehow I was able to interrupt that looping, and finally uninstalled the cab I had installed, figuring there was a conflict somewhere with whatever the cooked ROM was looking for.
Thereafter all was fine as I used the built-in ROM, and really got to like FingerKeyboard a lot... I would never go back to PCM keyboard which seems obsolete by comparison.
But then just the other day I did a spectacularly stupid thing: While I was checking out various XDA threads on skinning various apps, I came across another FingerKeyboard skin i wanted to just try. And I ended up doing the exact same thing... really dumb. I installed a new cab, opened the configurator, selected a different skin, and I believe it then says "chnages take place after a reset"... And then the same thing happened: Upon soft-resetting, when the rom started up the WM software, I hit that same error message as before: "Error (parsing?) skin file. Wrong resolution" or something like this.
But this time I could not recover. It was stuck on this error, and then every time I reset, i went into that dreaded bootup problem where I see the opening "HTC" logo, but the device never proceeds past this, and it's stuck in this mode. Yesterday and last night I spent I would say 15 hours, trying everything I possibly could to try to interrupt this stuck-bootup cycling problem, so that I could get Windows to resolve loading, then I could uninstall that cab and never try that again. I did everything: booted with the SD card out, with it in; then with it in, then pulling it out, and reinserting it... opening up the back taking out the SIM card and rebooting... (same stuck cycle!), then taking out the battery; same thing after I placed battery back in and powered up... Then took the battery out for 15 minutes, tried again... same. Then I tried to get an active sync connection, or at least use the USB cable connected to PC. No active sync could be established... No matter what I did it stayed in perpetual cyling of HTC logo, never getting past that... I ran active sync diagnostics, troubleshooting, tried different USB cables; then I went to the boards searching for people with this problem.
I read all these various "tricks" people have supposedly used to break out of this boot stuck-cycle... threads from 2007 were saying "hold the red END CALL button during the whole restart process"... nope...
And at the end of the 15 hours of trying I realized the fate ahead... that I would have to hard-reset.
I have not yet done that... and figured that, given the timing of your posting here, I'd at least ask you here "can you think of anything else?" before hard reset?
The reason the hard-reset is so dreaded in this case is that, in addition to a ton of registry tweeks I'd made for fonts and sizes and weights (all of which I've written down, so no problem to re-create these) to optimize a finger-friendly menu system for windows 6.1, this time I'd spent weeks adjusting the whole UI color scheme... using the great utility "UI Tweeks" ... There are probably 50-75 chnages here I'd made, which required a tremendous trial & error process of adjusting colors -- then resetting -- then analyzing how the color scheme worked for all aspects of the WM interface -- settings screens, dialog boxes, dimmed text, highlighted text -- everything.
I documented some of these by using screenshots to capture the Red, Green, Blue settings... but not all.
Anyway -- I am prepared to start over and hopefully remember the general target ranges of where each color value was set, and reconstruct the whole interface, which I was really really happy with... (I'd tested it in daylight, at night, with glare, no glare, on the dashboard in my car -- all to optimize the readability of choices that were now often in larger font sizes than default windows (crappy) UI.) I was just getting ready to publish all of this with a series of videos... because I contend that these variations combine to make, pound for pound, a better user experience than windows 6.5 in terms of finger-friendly navigation ---- until the actual new WM 7 premieres in 6 months or so with what we all hope will be a 100% finger-friendly interface.
So, sorry for the long-winded post. But it's worth it to me to at least run this past you to see if there is any last ditch effort I can use to boot my phone without resorting to hard reset. I suspect the answer is "hard reset", and that's okay, but at least I'd know i exhausted all remedies beforehand.
thank you,

Stefano, please search first before asking these questions. This is not the elf thread, this is the Herald thread. If you search or even just READ through the elf thread, you'll know that these questions have been answered a long time ago. As for an existing GoldCard, that would only happen if you buy the whole SD card that contains the GoldCard.
This is your first warning to search and post in the proper forum.

Unfortunately, it sounds like you've thoroughly troubleshooted the issue to its extent. There is no way around that. It's strange that a simple keyboard would cause it to not boot up, though. Have you talked to someone about making a good sashimi setup, yet? That would really alleviate this issue in the future. You have one of the most customized setups for anyone I know and are a prime candidate for sashimi.
That said, in order to use a skin for it, don't install a cab that attemps to overwrite or duplicate the keyboard. You must just place the skin files themselves in the correct directory. Later on today, when I'm near my laptop, I'll look at the layout that I used in JustStable and let you know what that directory layout is.

Thanks very much Ivan. It's much better to hear "there's nothing more you can do" than for me to wonder... so it's really helpful to get the reply.
Sashimi: I have not yet found someone who will do this, and I am ready to pay someone. Bizarre. Right before I updated to your final version of JustStable, you and I exchanged mail about that, and I did two things:
(1) Posted an "ad" to the Sashimi website forums themselves, and
(2) Posted a question to Flar & admins at XDA asking if the rules of this site permit me to post an "ad" to pay someone to do this. Flar replied that this is fine, and to do so in the Marketplace forum. But just due to the admins' normal busyness, it took several days to get the reply/approval.
And by that time I had not gotten a single reply at Sashimi site, so i figured i might as well write down as much info as I could and just flash as usual, since waiting around was just as ridiculous...
I did, at one point, during my recent series of new UI customizations for readability improvement, go thru each change and document with a screen shot, but it was a version that I ended up drastically chnaging after I'd tested contrast readability. My bad for not doing a more recent "manual" documentation.
BUT THAT RAISES AN IMPT QUESTION FOR ME:
I am less concerned, when I flash to a new rom, about reinstalling apps.. annoying, but less problematic, because I always have backup of my settings files within the program folders of these apps.
But SYSTEM FONT and UI REGISTRY CHANGES? If I save a copy of whole registry folder to Storage Card, using Total Commander, can I later use that dataset to copy & paste specific selective folders into the new Registry after I flash to new rom? Or the data files within a specific folder, ie "SYSTEM FONT" ?
If not, why not, I'm just curious. Thank you.

This is just a comment I want to make that is related to the eternal question people have about any software at XDA:
"Which is better??"
The work that I have been doing on USABILITY TWEEKS for your 6.1 ROM has not been strictly for me only -- not at all. I've been prepping for the past 9 months for a new website that is catered to mainstream consumers to help with their pre-purchase decision-making about which touchscreen platform to use, which phone, which then translates into WHICH CARRIER, that fits their specific usage patterns. There will be tons of videos based on many pre-defined "CONSUMER PROFILES" of categories of users, and what they tend to use their phones for. .... Much to be said about this at a much later date.
But one of many issues I intend to blast through is the really bad myth that "whatever is newest must be better than previous".
My guess is that, just within the universe of WING/HERALD USERS, vast majority of people are gravitated toward the 6.5 roms here, due to this "newest = better" misconception. Though within this thread I have asked, and you have answered, several times, that for the apps I run, 6.1 (justStable) is a better choice for me performance-wise than 6.5 ... That's significant -- yet seemingly lost on a lot of people. WHy? because it's one comment-volley buried deep within an obscure thread at XDA where if you didn't know it existed, you would never find it.
MAYBE with "Search" ...
But my point here, based on the title of this post, is actually just the opposite. I find it strangely bizarre that T-Mobile chose not to use a 6.5 OS for their version of their newest phone which many consider to be one of HTC's best phone devices ever. And this choice is heavily criticized in many review sites like Endgadget, Gizmodo, and a host of others.
The final point I want to make here -- and i understand XDA-developers.com is not organized to be a place to dump one's philosophy or opinoons -- has to do with helping the XDA site members, and the public at large who are interested in tweeking their phones from their carriers' stock roms, to learn their USER INTERFACE OPTIONS for their devices.
So I AM using this post as a place to just capture my thoughts -- because usability design is my profession, and it is what I can offer this community, other than money donating to chefs.
• I think Touchflo 2 and 3 are obsolete UI systems in terms of usability. They look beautiful, and snazzy. But I'll map out my reasons another time. (Still, for anyone that wants & likes Touchflo, my desire is not to interfere with anyone's preferences.)
• I think the widget-based "Home Page" concept is creeping into the touchscreen "ecosystem", because it enables people to finally be freed up from the constraints of trying to find formatting tricks to get clocks and notifications and SMS and appointment reminders to display where you want them -- when using standard WM "Today" Screen or "HTC Home".
• Most promising examples I am seeing are:
[SEP 14] FEWidgets Ultimate 1.0b11 - (100% native code No Flash required) (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=544874)
and
• simo's [09/09/2009] Androkkid 0.4.0 (Like Android User Interface) (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=540428)
• which raises the whole issue of platform directions: Android is criticized for being too slow right now, but favored due to open source AND this widget-based concept ...
• iPhone transformed the touchscreen phone world, and so far they are maintaining their icon-grid system for everything. Fair enough. And I like it a lot because it placed everything into same interface category as "clickable icon" -- whether what windows mobile would term a SETTING, or an APP, or a CONTACT link, or WEBSITE link.
• iFonz (from simo) was my preferred app launcher, and I wondered why Simo was abandoning it.. But I finally "got it" re Androkkid. In essence the iPhone-based icon-grid system of swiping pages is still the same principle behind Android's app launchers, and HTC's Sense UI, etc... But the addition is the widget based highly customizable home page.
• re Palm Pre -- I have not had experience with its UI -- other than seeing videos, and I do like it, but I haven't explored deep enough to know if their App Launcher concept is also, essentially, another variation of the iPhone icon grid system, just organized differently.
• skipping Blackberry, skipping SYmbian which is now dead anyway
• and finally ZUNE HD media player really shows what Windows Mobile 7 is most likely to be like... And it's got a pretty good conceptual idea behind it... with the feel of a ZOOM-IN interface where you go from general to more specific within a category of usage.
• The reason I think Windows 6.5 is totally worth skipping is that it is just smoke & mirrors. Yes it has improved a few menu-display elements.. But it's essential nature is a completely non-smart early implementation of what Zune HD has shown to be the new WM navigation concept -- the Zoom-in to virtual space interface.
So this is my spill-out post having to do with the whole landscape of WAYS TO GET THE BEST USAGE OUTOF A TOUCHSCREEN DEVICE. I find that the vast majority of people at XDA get fixated on "MATCH THE LOOK OF THE LATEST PORT of WM from an HTC DEVICE, using the HTC interface elements as well." .. and the fluid movement aspects of those interfaces -- vs real usage of the device.
There is one site I stumbled upon in past 2 weeks which had the smart idea: Develop a series of use-case scenarios -- ordinary tasks one might perform in the course of the day.. And then compare how to accomplish those tasks using iPhone, WM (Htc touchflo, HTC home, etc), PalmOS, Blackberry, etc.
I'm talking like: TASK: I am at lunch and realize I need to find a gadget ASAP, so I want to find the nearest RADIO SHACK, then find pricing on the gadgets, then go there to get it.
This would most likely best be accomplished using Google Maps, then a web browser. But this kind of example is the REAL test of how well an interface works, how quickly you can access files, and enter text, and search, connect to web browser, etc
===== the end =====

I'm with a customer at the moment, so I haven't been able to read the whole post, but I did glance over one thing. Android is no longer slow. I could never go back to Windows Mobile after using it. The interface is standard across the border and so much easier to use than my old wing.
As far as system font and ui registry changes, you CAN easily bring that with you, as long as you know where to place the files and registry settings, I don't see any problems with installing them that way.

And here's my quick glance...
T-Mobile didn't have a "choice" of what operating system to use. MS hasn't even released WM6.5!!!! They had to choose WM6.1.
That's why HTC and Microsoft said, later on in the year, when WM6.5 is released, the phones that are compatible will recieve the updates, and those will be the Touch Pro 2 and the Diamond 2.
So, T-Mobile put on the latest and greatest that they legally could. If they put on an unreleased version of WM6.5, then I'm not sure how much Microsoft would like them!
"And this choice is heavily criticized in many review sites like Endgadget, Gizmodo, and a host of others."
I guess Engadget and Gizmodo are just dummies then! I can't believe they'd write a review with false info. Shame on them.

Thanks, Ace, that makes perfect sense -- and you're right, now that I've read your post, those sites really missed the boat on that issue. So I see, Windows is looking to make the big splash with their rebranding of "Windows Phone", releasing all those phones later in October-November shipping with 6.5 as part of the sell-job of "Look at us! We're new & competitive again!" ... And T-Mobile wanted to release their phone during the Back To School huge selling window, thus 6.1 ....

SYSTEM FONT and UI REGISTRY CHANGES? If I save a copy of whole registry folder to Storage Card, using Total Commander, can I later use that dataset to copy & paste specific selective folders into the new Registry after I flash to new rom? Or the data files within a specific folder, ie "SYSTEM FONT" ?
As far as system font and ui registry changes, you CAN easily bring that with you, as long as you know where to place the files and registry settings, I don't see any problems with installing them that way.
Thanks - so just to clarify re "bring that with you": You're saying that YES, I can hard reset, returning to JustStable's defaults, and then I can copy & paste various select folders from my Registry backup copy, paste them into the device's Registryu, into their correct locations, and this will overwrite the default values and accept the "pasted" files?
If so, this saves me immense headache. I want to make sure we're talking the same thing. I am NOT talking about using OPHM Registry and exporting a registry backup, then later using that utility to import/restore a registry.
I am talking of everyday copy & paste of files and folders. please advise.

Is there any way to keep JustStable to NOT close out of programs on its own when I get low on RAM? I find it a bit frustrating when I'm mid-convo on Slick (AIM messenger), and I leave my phone for a few minutes, only to come back to it having closed out of all my most RAM-intensive programs.
Somebody halp plz!

If it didn't close the app, then the phone would probably crash, due to low RAM, lol.

When installing JustStableV2-Build8-Wing from the storage card, do you still rename the file HERAIMG.nbh? or is it WINGIMG.nbh?
Also, is build 8 the most stable version, or is it build 4?

And Build 4 (http://thewingster.com/juststable05262009.aspx) is the best.

I made this ROM months ago, so I don't remember, but by default, the HTC Home's location is fixed. There is a way to disable that and force the location to be flexible.
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Today\Items\HTC Home
Change "Type" from 5 to 4

Why is Build 4 labeled as the best build? I find it being slow when answering a call, when a reminder pops up, things like that. The phone goes into a slow crawl. Is there a more current/faster ROM for the Wing currently, or has the Wing be phased out with all the new, faster phones?

Why is Build 4 labeled as the best build? I find it being slow when answering a call, when a reminder pops up, things like that. The phone goes into a slow crawl. Is there a more current/faster ROM for the Wing currently, or has the Wing be phased out with all the new, faster phones?
-Adam
Well Build 8 just had lots of issues.
For WM6.1, JustStable is mostly the best, but you can find others that are great here: http://thewingster.com/wm61.aspx

That is because the pagepool is only 4mb. Bring it up to 6mb or 8mb and it should help.
And I stopped making ROMs (I make kitchens now) so JustStableV2 never really made it to final.

--- I may as well ask since it could be last opportunity to do so: HOW DO YOU CHANGE PAGESPOOL. Is this a device-specific thing? is there a link to how to do it. or can you lay it out here?
--- 2nd --- Your new site layout looks great. QUESTION: did you eliminate your page (directory) which had your roms? I want to be able to re-link "JustIvan.com" to that page of ROM downloads.
--- 3rd --- (OFF TOPIC) I am seriously looking at the HTC Hero, but as you know T-Mobile won't offer it to USA market. I'm trying to get a UK phone, but only if it works on Tmo's 3G network in USA. But I may see you again -- in the Android world. hasta la vista!

One more question. Sometimes when I close out of programs, a weird screen comes up with 9 blank, black boxes. The softkeys say [EXIT] on the left and [MENU] or [NEXT] on the right. Neither of the soft keys do anything when I hit them, and sometimes I have to tap the "X" in the upper right corner a few times to get out of that screen. Or just hit the "red" disconnect button. Is there a way to stop this from happening? ..and what is it?
Thanks for the help,
-Adam

When you see those menus at bottom, that is the application WkTASK at work. You should select Menu -- and go throiugh all the options to make sure you have set it up as you like it -- or choose not to use it. I think it's great.
As for your earlier request, there is a cab file somewhere, but i cant remember its name, which enables you to adjust the placement of items on TODAY screen, forcing HTC Home down. If I can find it i will report back. If I were you I would do a site search for "Today screen plugins"

Thanks,

If Ivan's answer solved problem, that'ds great. if not. here's some otger stuff i found:
I think the most current version of "Advanced Configuration Tool" unlocks the position of HTC Home... search for the app here, look for most recent version.
then this stuff
Yes, there is a way that you can move the home screen up and down. If you have regedit program, you can edit it. I am using Pocket Controller Pro to edit my registry.
First go to Settings, and uncheck HTC Home
...then...
Go to HK_Local_Machine
Software
Microsoft
Today
HTC Home and change "Type" to 4
Go to settings and click on HTC home again. __________________

Moving Home module on today screen
Believe there is an option in Kaisertweak (http://www.jongma.org/KaiserTweak/) to UNLOCK HOME to do this. Have successfully moved home module/plugin to bottom of today screen.

1. It is device specific only if you want to change the ROM on an already installed ROM. Look around for "Herald quick pagepool changer". There are a few apps that will change the pagepool on any nbh or nb if you want to flash from scratch.
2. Thanks. The directory still exists, but it's not linked anywhere. I don't really make ROMs anymore (at least for the time being.) You could always link it to my downloads directory in the new site and I could move the old ROMs there.
3. The Hero is pretty nice, and it supports the 1700mhz frequency, but I don't know whether it works or not. The Sense UI is pretty nice on top of android and I heard that the Hero is getting the official android 2.0 treatment soon. (The wm6.5 of the android world.)

Ok so you are sure you HardSPLed? Because phones don't come HardSPLed, you have to flash a special ROM to make it that way. If you are sure, then continue:
All you have to do to flash the Micro version that you want is to drag the downloaded ROM file into the root of your storage card (the file is called HERAIMG.nbh)
Then you hold down your camera button and press the soft reset button. Continue holding the camera button until a new screen appears.
Once on the next screen, it should ask you to press any key, well press down on the volume slider there, just do it.
It should start flashing and it'll work! If it fails, then your storage card is probably too large. If so, ask me once again.
Those instructions should do it for you! (hopefully its all spelled right, I wrote it from my phone!)
Ask for more help always.
as i was trolling this thread looking for an answer to another question i had i felt the need to respond to this, if in doubt about your phone being hardSPL then just do it, i had bought a used phoen that had a older version of touchflo 6.1 and for the life of me could not update the current rom to something i like more, well anyway i flashed and flashed and could not get past 3% so it finally occured to me that maybe the older roms didnt have to be HardSPL to work, anyway i used the file below and now im flashing away no issues i cant handle... well yet anyway lol, so i hope this helps :)... instructions are very easy and have used this on several wings

and BTW the reason i uploaded the version i used is because im still seeing the question asked in this thread and its not big deal for me to upload a couple files and a link, maybe itll keep the question from coming up again too soon and to remind people that if your using a phone with an older rom u might have overlooked the whole HardSPL step since your last update so here is the link i found easiest to use

There wasn't really a reason to upload those, there's a real thread for them. Also, there's way more complete instructions on other threads too ;)
Check out the Manila Gardeners Edition, and it has a How To Flash section, which has the best How to HardSPL guide in it ever, written by Apreincher! If you follow Apreincher's instructions from that page, THEN it is easy. :p

We did already answer his question right on the next post after his, and yes, we used the same link, and I told him he probably skipped Step 3, and he realized he did, and he posted that he solved it. I think that's answered ;) It's just useless to bring up solved stuff!

Yeaaaaa....I gave the link for Pandora, and then I answered the second part of his question, about where to download the ROM, since he asked both questions. I gave him the page for the lastest version, but also for the Archive version, since that archive one is known to be more stable.

I just have to offer this shout out to Ivan... again...
Back in Feb on 2009 he set out to make the last of his ROMs for the Windows Mobile platform -- for the Wing/ Herald. While others got a jump on him and focused on WinMo 6.5, Ivan maximized the power of WinMo 6.1 -- and then mastered the power of WinMo 6.5 for these older-generation HTC phones.
Today I saw the first FULL-DEMO video of the newest HTC phone for Windows -- the HTC LEO -- with the new speedy Qualcomm snapdragon processor.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cxkIJdG2brU
What amazes me is a simple reflection:
Of course there is no comparison between the Wing and the Leo -- as different as night and day. But when I look at the phone dialer, the notification system, and various other features of that new state of the art phone, I see things that Ivan got to work on the Wing... maybe not as speedy as (well of COURSE not as speedy as)... but damn if the functionality isn't largely there.
It's easy to get wowed by the latest & greatest... But I have to say, to have been able to pack so much functionality and MULTI-TASKING into the Wing, whether using the 6.1 ROM "Just Stable" or the 6.5 ROM "Just Home", is close to a miracle.
It still "gets" me that 4 years ago my predecessor phone to the Wing, the T-mobile MDA, shot video, had multi-media text messaging, copy & paste, voice command, transcriber input device, and various other features it would take 3 whole versions of the newer iPhone to ever match -- finally in their 3GS models.
I'm not at all nostalgic about, or even loyal to, Windows Mobile. The only thing that kept Windows Mobile viable for past 4 years has been XDA-Developers, bringing finger-navigation and slide-apps to the archaic and unimaginative Windows operating system... finally making all those features that WindowsMobile miraculously had in the T-Mobile MDA 4 years ago -- actually usable without holding the phone up to your eye to check off tiny boxes or tap on tiny numbers to enter contact info.
So... I'm paying tribute to Ivan -- and XDA --for helping me to have a very usable phone for past few years... bringing to my old device features that are STILL not exceeded by the brand new fastest HCT phone -- the Leo.
Bravo amigo! :)

It's probably somewhere in the registry...Try HKLM/Software/HTC...
See if you can find something in there. That would be my first guess. The registry holds tons of golden nuggets of goodness!

If you have not solved this yet, there is a very simple one-click way to do this:
Advanced Configuration Tool -- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=418151
http://i36.tinypic.com/2zyyfmf.png
It's quite an amazing tool developed by folks at XDA... There is a whole list of interface changes you can make, as well as power and performance changes, and also the specific control you want: HTC MUSIC --- allows you to select either WMP or HTC Audio.
SOmeone asked earlier how to "unlock" the position of HTC Home within the Today screen. Here too, it is a simple selection.
It is rarely ever talked about or advised, but it's a must-have tool that adds control to about 100 elements of any WindowsMobile ROM from XDA.

My battery lasted a good amount of time when I used the ROM. Do you leave WiFi enabled at all times? There is a bug that happens on EVERY device and EVERY ROM that runs windows mobile that causes the CPU to eat up battery life. You could be happening.
