Got an AT&T Jack and need all the help I can get with this phone.
Hardly any .cabs will run on it and the GPS is locked (tried all the unlock tricks for the BJII).
This really is a nice phone, its just sooooo hindered by AT&T its not funny.
Thanks

Am working on the ringtones well how to set my own mp3 ( i tried cutting a mp3 down to 30sec and pasted into my documents and ringtones and it didnt work) i hate the stock ringtones..If am correct i had read somewhere that the gps has to be set to com4 .. I was reading in another forum that they are working to security unlock our phone ( so no more permission not allowed when installing cabs) Keep you posted

Jsanta which forum did you see the activities to app unlock the Jack? I tried every possible availible tool also but no luck :(

GPS is not locked. Both Google Maps and Live Search Mobile worked without any tweaks. Acquisition is nearly instantaneous.
Ringer MP3's are capped by the same filesizelimit registry key (300kb) that was installed on the Blackjack 2.
The problem is the registry on the i637 is locked, so a registry editor is no help. I have dug around in the registry and found the security settings, but I cannot make any changes due to the locked registry. I posted them on the ATT/Samsung forum linked here:
http://forums.wireless.att.com/cng/board/message?board.id=samsung&thread.id=70827&page=5
Anybody know how to unlock the i637's registry?

Thanks for that link bch, saw it back a few days ago and it had 2 posts and forgot it. Wow how its grown.
Also could you please explain how to use CHome to do the contacts like yours, god that would help me.
And when I run chome I get errors on alot of things is this normal?

CHome Configurator (CC) will generate registry error messages when you (a) launch it and (b) save changes. Regardless of the error messages, the program runs and the changes do save and work perfectly.
This is how I set up my sliding panel for speed dialing:
Open CHome Config. Then do the following:
Menu > Panel > New, click yes when asked if you want to create a new panel.
Name the panel "speed dial" or something that suits you. The newly created panel wil appear in the list of panels; highlight it then click "show" on left soft button. This makes it visible on the homescreen; conversely, any panel can be hidden from view on the homescreen by clicking "hide."
Click on the panel to edit it. An editing window will open, click Menu > Page > New. When asked, confirm you want to create a new page.
Click Menu > Template > Contact Dialer. Choose contact phone number from your contacts list. If it's not a mobile #, it will ask if you want to enable SMS (text mssg) for this contact. Click yes if you want to use a speed e-mail for this contact. Click yes when it asks if you want to use the contact photo for the contact.
If you are using e-mail instead of SMS, then you need to manually edit the last field on the page which identifies the messaging service. Replace "SMS" with the name of the e-mail account you want to use, e.g. "Hotmail". Importantly, and not intuitively, if you want to use Outlook E-mail, then you need to insert "ActiveSync". Do not get this field confused with the one for the right soft-button, which you might want to change to "Send E-Mail" or similar instead of "SMS."
For each contact, create a new page and format as described above. Then click Done. Then Menu > Exit. You will be prompted to save. Doing so will give you two registry error messages (at least on the i637, it will), but ignore them by hitting OK. The speed dial panel will now appear amongst the sliding panels on your homescreen.
CHome also gives you the ability to change the order that panels appear on your homescreen under Menu > Panels.
Good luck!

Oh, I forgot to add:
When editing the last field to change from SMS to e-mail, you need to insert the e-mail address in the place of the phone number. So, "555-555-555" would be changed to "Joe@anywhere.org"
Again, you only do this if you want to use e-mail with this contact and not SMS (text mssg).

i cant seem to run anything that does not have a certificate or digitally signed.
the phone has a two-tier security enabled. I used security confi manager to verify.
Also i cant get Garmen xt to recognize the GPS.
I tried Ceregeditor and can not change any registry settings.

Felipe, have you tried Windows Live Mobile and/or Google Maps? Both work with GPS on my phone, but I haven't tested anything else. I know it's not a solution, but if we can track the performance over several phones, we might get closer to a solution.
I can confirm that mine worked fresh out of the box with both of these apps.

BCH238,
Windows Live Mobile is working and it sees the GPS using intermediate driver.
Now if we can only unlock the GPS intermediate driver so that garmin xt can see it.
I had to do this for the blackjack 2 using MoDaCo.SmartphoneGPSActivator.COM4.CAB
but i can not run this in Jack because its locked down. and the cab is not certified.

So far nothing GPS related, except google, live or, att (that have been mentioned so far), will see the gps device.
Is there a way to get google or live to not use data and read maps off of storage?
I cant even get pocket streets 2004 to run. then again it is old.

It is a shame AT&T has crippled this so badly. All I want is to make a few modest tweaks that were no problem on my original Blackjack. Oh well, hopefully someone will come up with a workaround to unlock the registry in the not-too-distant future...

None yet. At&t and Samsung have really locked these babies down. IT SUCKS.
Is there a way to build a cab file out of one that will install (ex. google maps)
with the regestery mods (out of one of the unlocker cabs) needed to unlock the phone. Basically tricking it.

Great! Some progress is being made.
OK so how do I work the UAMgr.exe. (is it needed) I did get DATA unlimited from att, and it would be nice to use the phone with my mini laptop to access Inet on the road.
And what is the regestry key for Mp3 limit? Didn't see it on hofo.
Sorry for the newbness, first samsung mobile i have worked on. MOTO Razr was my first, 8525 second, and now this. Modded the crap out of the other two.
Also, aethicus, Chome runs on the phone so just download the cab and install. Haven't got PHOTO to point to SC yet either.

Find and install PHM Registry Editor. Install the .cab file. Open app. Search for registry key "filesizelimit." Edit the value to change it to a very high value, e.g. 9999999. Exit editor and reboot phone. Done.

I ran a hard reset and ran the security fix again and Garmin works like a champ
the GPS uses Com4 and so far this is the fastest GPS on a phone I have ever seen. 10 seconds after Garmin is running GPS is synced to satellites.
compared to blackjack 2 and mogul 6800 this phone is faster.

Felipe, when you did your hard reset, did you reset data or the registry (or both)? These are the two options given when you reset. I had to do a reset, and I chose to reset the registry since my sliding panels all became erased/corrupted somehow after I uninstalled a certain program. Unfortunately, the clearsecurity.cab would not work after I reset; it simply has no effect whatsoever. I'm wondering if it's worthwhile to reset everything and try again.

I'm trying to get Vito AudioNotes to work on my new Jack, like it did on my 3125. But it won't record a call.
I've done the PocketNow security removal, and I've been here:

hi there,
in case anyone wants unlock their phone, forget the bullshit att tells you, as far as the instructions go on how to do it. all you have to do is call att and have them give you the unlock code. once you have the code, put in any sim other than att and you will be asked to put in the unlock code. that's it.
i also found the code to get into the admin menu.
*#1546792*#
i only tried it on my phone but i am sure it works on every SGH-i637
once you are in the admin menu, you can switch 3G off:
go to network&call setting
go to network mode
select GSM instead of Auto
done. i hope my battery life will get better this way. the reception should get better as well, i hope!
thanks,
G

i can see why it might drain the battery faster if you set it to GSM - your phone might constantly be switching between Edge and 3G.
i've tried admin settings many times, but i keep switching to 3G as well. is there a registry edit to completely disable switching to 3G?
anyone?

If you application unlocked your i637 using the clearsecurity.cab file from the Pocketnow.com link, make sure you uninstall when you are done. It includes some SOTI pocket remote components and seems to drain the battery on my Jack.

Interesting, that might explain the sudden dip in battery life. :)
Sadly though I have decided to RMA this back to Amazon. The phone is fast and slick, but I'm not entirely sold on the form factor (HTC 3125 / Flip Phone fan) and the lack of Call Recording support completely kills it for me.

I think the phone is great, but some programs don't play well with the Qualcomm ARM11 processor. Older games have a tendancy to hang, where they didn't on my Moto Q with Win 6.1.

Just make sure you uninstall it after you use the Microsoft Security center, because it WILL drain your battery. It doesn't allow the phone to go into low power mode.

After you type in *#1546792*#. In Network Order select GSM first and in Network mode select GSM. It should stay in Edge mode.
It helps the reception somewhat.
Wish there was a quick way to toggle it.

Hello, great forum, good info. However I just got a new unlocked i637 today and connected via Wi-Fi wireless to the Internet. I cannot sign in to AIM account(s) but I can get my email and surf the net with the IE. Anyone else have this dilema? Does anyone know why I cannot login to my AIM Instant Messaging account with this Jack? Is AIM only usable if you pay for a 3G data plan connection? I have not applied the registry unlock mod yet. The phone is stock straight out of the box but AIM does not connect! Why?
Thanks for any tips anyone!

Why's this forum so dead all of a sudden? No interest in the Samsung Jack?
I still cannot login to my AIM account using this thing... anyone having similar problem? It just sits there for a long time after entering userid and password.
Then it errors out saying check to make sure not in Flight Mode (which I am not) and that your network connection settings are correct (they are).
I can use IE browser, I can use SkyFire browser, I can get my emails, but I cannot connect using Instant Messaging?
I also have applied the mod to remove registry security. All went fine, but that is not related to this Instant Messaging not working.
I am using wireless Wi-Fi connection to Internet. I do not have 3G plan nor connection. Does the ATT Instant Messaging functions only work with ATT 3G connections or shouldn't it work with wi-fi hotspot connections also!? huh?
Anyone? Someone let me know if they can successfully connect to AIM when using their Wi-Fi mode connection so that I can determine if I have a problem with my Jack i637 software image or not. Please?

sorry its taken this long for someone to reply, but I think you found the best solution.
I personally don't use aim/aol so no real help to your problem.
But I thought using those programs (ATT version of aim msn yahoo) were like sending texts (counted as them?) so it used data to sign in and messaging to send and receive.

jonrobertd and filipe, please can you be more specific on exactly what steps you had to do to get Garmin Mobile XT to work? I loaded my microSD card up with Garmin XT but I cannot get it to find GPS connection. I applied the unlock mod already too but I don't see how this is related to GPS device being recognized. Do you mean you applied the MoDaCo BlackJackII com4 port mod after unlocking phone? and then it works or do not apply that MoDaCo Com4 port hack and it works without it? Help please.

Nevermind, I got my GPS Intermediate Driver working on my Jack i637 now with Garmin Mobile XT V5.
I think it was because I executed the GPSTest.exe program to find satelites and from there Garmin program automatically starts up detecting it. Odd that you have to do that first. Note to others: You do not have to apply the old outdated MoDaCo COM4 port hack like on the BlackJackII.
Oh, for some reason when I tried my older Garmin Mobile XT v4 it would not detect the GPS driver... even after I ran the GPSTest.exe test program. Version 5 however does work without hacking on this Jack i637 Windows Mobile 6.1.

I thought I had this problem licked as I thought I finally got the Garmin Mobile XT v5 software recognizing the Jack's GPS receiver last night. It was working but this morning after leaving phone on and charging all night, I fired up Garmin Mobile XT and it fails to pick up any GPS signals. I ran GPSTest.exe again and it too does not receive any satelite signals. Hmmmm. I wonder if the time of day here (sun rising in the morning around 09:30am EST) has something to do with weakening the satelite signals to my area. But that should not be! The GPS receiver in my Samsung Jack does not seem to be that sensitive (in other words it is not a good receiver). Does not pick up enough signal? Yes? Regular Garmin 205W unit picks up signals fine even inside my house. Samsung Jack picks up nothing. pure crap IMO. useless toy. I am now going to turn off my phone and turn it back on and see if that resets the GPS receiver to pick up signals again.
BTW, what settings should we set the GPS to using the GPSTest.exe configurator? I had it set to its default "MS Based" when it worked last night.
But it offers two other settings: "Stand Alone" and "Assisted". Which one to set it to so that it works with Garmin and 3rd party software?
Also if anyone knows, what should all the other field settings be set to (like "Number of Fixes" and "Deleting Data" fields)? Who knows how to use GPSTest.exe program to set the GPS config? Thanks!
10:14am EST update: I restarted my Jack and left the GPSTest running for a few minutes outside my house. It picked up 6 satelites now. Last night it only picked up 5 satelites.
Garmin Mobile XT V5 once again works and recognised the GPS driver. However it voices that it loses Satelite signal every so often. That's not good. The GPS receiver on this thing is a gimmick and not good at all. It can't be reliable if it always loses the satelite signals. I was standing still not traveling at all. Signals just get lost and then reacquired on and off. It's just a toy on these smartphones (all of them)... unreliable and just something to play with but not rely on. Also it is not pinpoint accurate to my location. It gets to the general location area but not exact. But I guess everyone knows that already.

That is odd man, Garmin has (5.00.20 same as yours) no problems at all on my phone.
I normally get 7-11 sats in my location, North East Georgia.
Using GPSTest in windows folder the only thing I have changed is GPS to stand alone.
Number of fixes- 999999999
Deleting data- None
It does get my location faster using the GPS as assisted, but it is not as accurate to me.
On a secondary note I am in the car, on my laptop, using Garmin, right now! (NOT driving) And it has not givin me a problem for 32 miles so far.
I am running a side by side compairison of MS Streets and Trips/GPS to Garmin as I come home from Anderson SC.
I like Garmin better.

Well, after I rebooted my Jack i637 and reacquired the satelite signals, it seems to be working fine again. I think it was just atmospheric conditions at that time of the day at my specific geographic location in the city or maybe I was just impatient to give it enough time to lock on to the GPS signals. It seems to be working for the short bursts of time that I tried it. But I really have not traveled at all using this GPS on Jack yet... so my opinion is still forming.

All I can answer is this:
set it to Stand Alone. With MS Based it uses a few kb of data at the initial GPS startup. On standalone, it no longer does this, but should still be availible to other GPS mapping software.
good luck

Ok now I have a huge problem, my down key no longer works.
It is a hardware problem as I have babied this phone.
Is there a way to fully backup my phone so I can warranty this one. (clone it to desktop then new phone)
Ok so my problem fixed itself for now. But I still would like a way to back up my phone, I know of Sprite, but is there a freeware tool with a desktop version?

But I can't get my GPS to work, I'm not entirely sure what's going on with this Garmin XT that everyone has, but I don't think everyone paid for, and for some reason, neither AT&T nor the seller on ebay can figure out how to unlock my phone (my IMEI isn't found, apparently).
I did run security cab and unlocked the registry, and I have and used Total Commander, but I'm not terribly familiar with it.
I HATE people who ask dumb questions in forums, and I'm really sorry if this is a waste of everyone's time (if you could direct me to a relevant post, that'd be helpful as well) but I've gone through a ton of posts.
For the GPS:
I have Google Maps on my phone and it works if I have wifi or are connected through my computer, but I even tried running the GPS test (set to Stand Alone) and nothing shows up. It's connected to my PC in case that's some kind of factor, but if it's testing GPS I don't know how it could be.
Am I supposed to hard reset? (I think there was a mention of that somewhere) I don't have any files I can't replace if I need to, or am I looking for another solution?
Garmin:
So what's the deal with the program? I was swayed to this phone largely for it's navigating properties and it would be very nice if I could utilize them as cheaply as possible.
Also, is there a catch-all freeware media player? I tried to dl TCPMP, but there weren't any clear instructions on how to install or use it.
Again, sorry if all these were answered before, I'm just going in circles here.

Well after washing my Jack during moving, I have a Tilt 2 now. But I can still try to help.
As far as unlocking, the only thing your IMEI is gonna do is SIM unlock, not security.
Google an app called GPSed, its freeware, and it will only use the GPS, so that will tell you if it's working. The dumb question I have is are you outside, or near a window so the sats can pick up?
Google maps originally uses cell tower triangulation, and has to be changed to GPS in menu-settings.
Garmin is great, but the mapset I am using is over a Gig in size, but Email me and we can discuss this more. I'll PM you my email address
Don't know about media player, sorry.

Got mine unlock thanks to this post:
http://www.1800pocketpc.com/2009/06/10/unlock-the-security-on-the-samsung-jack.html
The only difference was that the "Total Commander" doesn't work with the jack. Instead, I use "CeRegEdit". gET IT HERE:

I am not sure if its just this but my jack takes a LONG time to fire up its GPS. Sometimes as long as half an hour. Why don't you turn it on, go outside and wait a while?

My BJII shot craps so it was replaced with the Jack. I am trying to get my Garmin xt to work with the Jack but I am not having any luck. I have read through here but I guess I am missing something. Could someone tell me in a step by step fashion that a 4 year old could understand exactly what I need to do to get Garmin to work on the Jack.
Thanks for any help you all can provide.

I don't have garmin so I'm sorry, I can't exactly give you the help you need. But you should search around the garmin software for the gps configuration settings.
I use copilot live (got it dirt cheap) and it detects GPS just fine after you run the gps autoconfig
If there is no autoconfig in garmin, try to set it to use the 'GPS intermidiate driver' if there is an option somewhere in the settings...

Got an AT&T Jack and need all the help I can get with this phone.
Hardly any .cabs will run on it and the GPS is locked (tried all the unlock tricks for the BJII).
This really is a nice phone, its just sooooo hindered by AT&T its not funny.
Thanks
You can flash to a non-branded ROM but you have to search it for yourself,
and please aware of the flashing risks!
