Hi,
I have an O2 XDA Orbit and I need to upgrade that to WM6.1, currently I have WM6.0 Pro running on it....i have been reading threads relating to the upgrade but i rather got confused...i really need somebody to explain me the following please:
1. Can my phone be upgraded to WM6.1?
2. If yes then how can I do this in a secure way without risking my phone?
I would really appreciate your efforts...Oh just in case you might need the info, I've detailed my "Device Information" below:
Windows Mobile 6 Professional
CE OS 5.2.1238 (Build 17745.0.2.3)
Processor: OMAP850-201MHz
ROM version: 3.4.206.2 WWE
ROM date: 4/18/07
Radio version: 02.67.90
Protocol version: 4.1.13.28
ExtROM version: 3.4.206.101
RAM size: 64 MB
THANKS!!

1. Yes, your phone can be upgraded to WM 6.1
2. The operation is not riskless, but you can minimize those risks by reading carefully posts concerning CID unlocking and flashing...start from here and good luck: http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Artemis

Windows Mobile and radio builds have different serial numbers, you'll never have the same ;).Just choose what you like the most.. ROMS are here: http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Artemis_DumpedRoms and radios are here:http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Artemis_RadioUpgrades. Obviously your device MUST be CID unlocked first. Take time to read a little bit..I can't flash it for you from my home :D
P.S: Our device is very versatile but not so powerful (low ram & cpu), I suggest to choose a ROM that doesnt have useless heavy graphic complications..No "cubes" nor "manillas" or whatsoever...It may look pretty but quite unusable, but this is just an opinion

Radio upgrade is optional (theoretically) but if never done , i suggest to do it. Can greatly improve gsm ,wifi, gps reception and battery consumption. Anyway as you can see I'm only a normal member of this forum (with a bit of experience), don't take what i say as gold!

oh ok...so the thread u mentioned for the ROM upgrade der were like 15-20 upgrades one said : WM6 from Orbit English 3.4.207.1 02.69.90 4.1.13.28 17745.0.2.3....is this for upgrade frm WM6.0 to WM6.1 or WM5.0 to WM6.0?
and then there are some which goes by the name of WM6.1 B&B v5.0, PDAVIET WM6.1, Greasy Weasel Evolution 2.x, Mossi meets Anja31 v1, Fredelius WM6.1 so which one shud i go for???

As you can see from my signature, my ROM is in italian, i'm afraid you're not interested in..otherwise i would recommend it straight away (even if its already 1.5 years old..).I'm extremely happy with it, tried many others (included pdaviet 6.5) and quickly returned to it. There is no "the best rom of all", each one has pros and bugs..must try and try again...The general rule in my opinion is to look for a light, clean updated Windows build that includes the latest patches (e.g. for bigger memcards, for camera, bluetooth etcetera). No need to look for a ROM that expressely says it's for Orbit...just choose a WM6 or 6.1 from Artemis section

It was a pleasure, no big deal..I understand that at the beginning one's little bit scared ;) and has many doubts...that is why I insist that you DO READ CAREFULLY instructions and the forum in general..A couple of last hints: CID unlocking i necessary only ONCE, after that you can flash all the coocked roms you want. If I'm not wrong, radio upgrade doesnt need CID unlocking, you can do it before all operation without risk nothing. CIAO
If you have news (hope good) about your upgrade let me now!

ah, just wondering..don't have experience in it, but as you have an "Orbit", doesnt that mean that it is also SIM locked? Maybe you have some additional steps to do, check it!

Yes it's what I meant.Well it's a good start..I was looking around for some ROMs for you, unfortunately some screenshots have been removed from the latest ones but let me link one as an example : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=364883. It is not the very latest build but I rembember it was woking very well. Obviously,i'd choose the NON CUBE version

Try another source or try my radio : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=374430
If problem persists go with CID unlock.

UPDATE:
YOU HAVE TO UNLOCK phone before upgrading the radio aswell, I've just read it at http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Artemis_RadioUpgrades, it says "You need to flash Artemis USPL before flashing these radios, for more info refere to the USPL thread". Cmon man!! take a little time to read!

Good, so before damage is done let's cool down..until now i was so lucky that I never had problems, but that also means that i'm not very good in troubleshooting...i'll tell in a minute what programs I use, just to be sure..

OK now i tried the USPL once more wht happens is tht it goes through the DOS process and when tht is over WMDC (Windows Mobile Device Center) looses connection wid da phone but immediately the USB icon pops up in da task bar...now the device is still blank (i mean da screen) and the ROM Update Utility dialog box pops up now 2 questions:
1. shud i wait for the screen to go tri color and den go ahead wid the ROM Update process and If yes then how long shud i supposedly wait (coze i waited for 10mins but nothin happened)?
2. Should I go ahead wid the ROM Update Utility process and the tri-color screen will eventually appear as a result of it? If yes then i've tried tht too and nothin happens except tht the ROM Update Utility software says "Verifying the Phone Info..." and after a while error shows up reading: ERROR [260] UPDATE ERROR The Update Utility cannot connect to your phone. Please check that your USB cable/cradle is connected properly between your PC and your phone.":confused::confused::confused:

UPDATE: I managed to solve my little problem..I know it was not exactly the same as yours, peppercorn (you fail USPL, I failed a splashscreen flash) but as the error code was the same i'll tell you what happened...I tried to update Vista drivers for my artemis found at http://www.forummobiles.com/index.php?showtopic=139079&st=0&p=1399080&#entry1399080, at step 2....but Vista said they were already updated. So I removed the memory card and tried again..at my third attempt error [260] disappeared and it worked ! I think the flashing procedure should go like this: launch start_uspl,screen device goes black and disconnects, device enters bootloader (tricolor screen),progress bar on your pc starts to increase..Anyway I think that a WHITE screen is not a good sign..in fact I had this when my upgrade failed..Maybe you've read around that it is possible to flash a device from the memory card but still you must unlock the device first and I don't know if that can be done by SD card..

1. Now you successfully flashed, i think you're going off-topic in this thread, you should ask in the ROM thread
2. I don't have that ROM, though I can't help you
3. I told you not to choose Cube versions!;):D
