$20from me. gotta see this working :)

You can put me down for $15 if this is a total replacement for the awful looking WM one and is skinable.

Thanks, guys! You're on the bounty list! Lets hope this will trigger som kind of a new update of the app ;)

probably extremely premature to say its dead...but i guess not posting on this forum is grounds for jumping the gun...I say, finish the project and forget about updating us cause it doesn't matter...the same people saying its dead will be the first ones downloading.

So stay tuned!

Me too. Hopefully by next week I'll be looking for users/collaborators to start creating the UI and skinning SDK.

To re-introduce myself, I'm working on the native edition, my chance to finally dig into Windows dev and C++. My justification is that developing directly against the native API instead of .NET gives me greater flexibility and eliminates the category of problems that result from using wrapper libraries. But truthfully, I just have the itch to "go native."
(Is there a better forum for rambling by S2SMS developers?)

Hey Bryce, it's great news that you're working on this project!! Looking forward to seeing the results of your work! Is the Google Code repository a better forum to use? Check out the link in the first post, and talk to Ricky´ if you need access..

While I'm waiting for this coming to the successful end, too (I would help you coding, if I had enough time... but I don't  ) - but I can't understand, why in the forum named "Development and Hacking" one of the sticky threads is the thread about an app which doesn't even exist?....
Not so long ago there was a biiiig action of unsticking posts, and now what?...

Don't get me bad, but I don't think it's a good idea.

Exactly so.

Even more: some time ago, this subforum were the place of hacking our devices: unlocking, making it better and so on. Posts from such our users, like for example cmonex, buzz, itsme and others. I wish those times come back... Just look at the first page: skins for titanium, skins for manila... omg. Where's the "hacking"? Maybe it's time to rename this forum?

Well, maybe you should take a walk to the book store and buy a dictionary. Then you might find out why this is 'Development' ;)

And, this is sticky because it has been alot of interest and a lot of posts over a short period. If you read the last posts, people are working with the app. So it will be realized. But please be patient. Instead of being a smart mouth, try contributing instead :)

Why doesn't iContact have a sticky? What about S2U2? And the Google Voice app, why not? They all have HUGE interest, so by your definition, they should all be stickied. Sorry, but your app isn't special. It should be treated like the rest of the apps in development, without a sticky.

Don't blame me, I don't hand out stickies. Never said that those apps don't deserve a sticky. And, this is not "my" app, actually it's no app yet. It's a project which hopefully will result in an app :)

cooleydan5
23rd August 2009, 08:06 PM
i dont mean to but in, but this app deserves to be sticky becuase with this app our omnia will be obsolete. winmo origional txting is super slow and buggy. this app is very lightweight and will make our lives a whole lot easier. and as for s2u2 and those other programs they are nowhere near as important. yea they are cool to have but they are not nearly as usefull as this. if u guys dont like this app sorry but many ogher ppl are interested hence 'sticky'

if u dont mind me asking...why does it bother u so much that this is sticky? if u dont like it then dont follow tjis project. its obviously sticky for a reason. and i have tries pretty much every texting app there is but none replace winmo. they all conflict with it. thid will replace it. and they sre more buggy than winmo.im just sayin there is mo point of complaining about this. if u dont like it then give us te respect to enjoy it. i dont go on ur posts and complain.

to each their own i guess. This thread has gone all off topic. Maybe you should start a thread in the appropriate subforum and maybe you'll get a better excuse because this thread is and should be about S2S and not about the legitmacy of it being a sticky. I think we could agree on that.

We need a new thread where the devleoper is in control, since it's his app.

longice
23rd August 2009, 09:13 PM
No. I've used WinMo txting my entire phone life, NOTHING wrong with it.

Plus, there's ALREADY apps that do SMS. There's at least 2 existing apps, and I know there's plenty more. Why make a sticky for an app that already exists, but someone wants a slightly different feature set?

And guess what, people said the WinMo contacts suck, hence iContact. But did that have a sticky? NO. People wanted a better dialer, hence iDialer. But no sticky. Then people wanted a better SMS program, but there's a sticky? Thats breaking the chain of logic.

Sorry, but it doesn't deserve a sticky. Not EVERYONE needs this. Almost every phone now has TF3D, so there's even NO need for this app!

Go on and develop the application, but the sticky is not deserved.

Ace, my man, why the bad mood? No need to get nasty :) And what's the big deal, really? A sticky doesn't mean the world to anyone, does it? So why bother, really...

style1
23rd August 2009, 09:13 PM
If by childish, you mean logical, then yes :)

But the developer of this app needs to start his own thread. This thread is still the old, request, thread.

This is the correct sub-forum, its just that there are millions of other apps that deserve stickies too, and they all can't get a sticky.

So, whoever is actually developing this, you need to start your own thread, since this is YOUR app. And mods, the sticky needs to be left off that thread, as it has already been explained.

I can't believe I'm being sucking into this...oh well

Childish in the sense that your mommy(mods) give timmy a red bike(sticky) so you think you deserve a red bike(sticky). Its a fallacy in the sense that this is not a democracy, you does not need logic applied to it, follow it or ignore it...if you want to question it, there are better avenues to do so, than to hijack a thread (yes this thread is officially hijacked).

This is the development and hacking forum...not the proper forum for your complaint>>>>>
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=263<<<<<
the right forum for "Anything to do more with the site than with the phones. Feature requests, announcements, praise, moaning, etc."

The people developing this, are using the same code repository as the people who started this project, why start a new project/thread...just keep us updated and when it drops start a new thread for the beta. Of course thats just my opinion. Anyway, I don't want this to degenerate into an open flame war, you wanna argue please pm me. I just don't want this thread to become more hijacked than it already is

cooleydan5

@ace10134 and @utak3r:

Between the two of you, you both have near 3,000 posts. Yet you just derailed a topic. And over it's sticky status too that neither of you have control over. PM a mod or something, don't fill this thread with your whining. You'd think after being around here for so long - as you just reiterated about the old days of cmonex, bepe etc - that you'd understand XDA forum etiquette a little better.

Who's it harming by being a sticky? Why does it get your knickers in a knot as to what is stickied here and what isn't? Does it stop you sleeping at night? If not I really don't think the comments were needed. If it does, I'd go see a therapist.

Regardless of whether it deserves a sticky by logic; It has one for now so until it's removed by someone with the appropriate power let's just focus on the topic at hand thanks.

@publicbkh and @bob_the_amazing:

Not long ago, someone claimed that the Slide button is the MOST DEFINING feature of this app which will set it apart from the other mere wannabes. Well an app that can be so groundbreaking as a slide button, does deserve to have its own you-know-what. :p

Jokes apart, its good to see that some developers are doing their bit. I hope they are only a little distance away from coming up with something which can be tested, analysed, thrashed and developed into a really ground-breaking app. Best of luck to those who know what they are doing. The others may restrict themselves to suggesting a suitable name for the app which eventually the developers should ratify. :)

I am pondering how to implement skinning. It's not a top priority, I know, but it would be fun to have others (the UI creators) working alongside me. I'll continue to update this post.

1. Should UI creators use html and javascript -- WPF? -- (and handle events) or just provide static bitmaps?

Nah I think most graphics editors including myself would prefer to just have static bitmaps we can skin.

Maybe XML? But I think javascript might be too much for the average graphic guru.

If you want to get in touch with me regarding the UI or need any graphics just PM me here.

Well this isn't a completed app yet, it's a technical preview.

If you're expecting to send TXT messages heavily with this app, then you're gonna have to wait for it to be finished.

If you want to help with beta testing, then you're in the right place! Someone should be able to help you. But remember, beta testing means that things won't work perfectly, and if you're not into that, then just wait on the side lines ;)

What's your programming language ? C# ? Then why are you talking about JavaScript ? Are you going to build it in HTML ?
I can help in coding in C# if you need any help in this area.

The basic idea is that I (and others) would write customized *faceless* controls (a contacts listbox, an sms conversation-thread listbox, an sms new-message composite control) that are used by the true "application developers" -- the people interested in user experience (including the UI skinners) -- to stitch together and *envisualize* the actual SMS application. XML(XAML?) and Javascript, in addition to the controls, could provide the framework for creating layout and behavior.
This approach should permit the app. devs maximum flexibility in designing the User Interface but can accomodate those who just want to provide static bitmaps (a default configuration can specify target filepaths for them). It also can support consistency across apps through reuse of controls and, potentially, a common framework among controls for UI design.

Anyway,
I'm able to help in sending and receiving the text messages using C#, if you guys like.

But please notice that having a single standard framework (eg. Microsoft .Net) is essential for such an application. If you like to send and receive text messages using C#, then it is better to forget using HTML, JavaScript and ... .

Best Regards.

This is by no means a small project, but all of the tools are available to make it fly. Has no one even begun on this yet?

If not, I may start dabbling myself..

for testing i made a simple app similar to the goal of S2S based on the file explorer demo that comes with silvermoon just for a proof of concept. Attached to this post is a cab just to know if you guys like the concept and believe that worth the effort of making it an usable aplication.

Hi all,

i am currently experimenting with my own version of this idea. In the first place because i wanted to learn how this could be done. It is created more with the idea of how can you make it work rather than how does it look good. (which really shows). it currently has the following:

Finger friendly scrolling lists (which really makes it feel a lot like iContact!)
Display SMS inbox with contact name and picture
Display details of SMS
Display Contacts with Contact name and picture
Create SMS message and send it. (you can send an sms message by selecting a Contact from the Contacts list)

It is currently slow and does not look very good. it is after all still an alpha release.

I have contacted user Ricky to be part of the googlecode group, so it is currently not my intention to try and create this on my own and i am perfectly happy and willing to help the users that are already involved.

having said that, I am interesting it what you guys think, so if there is any interest i will put up a link for this here.

ok so here is my slightly functional alpha version of the concept that is discussed here. it includes the following:

Finger friendly scrolling lists
Display SMS inbox with contact name and picture
Display details of SMS
Display Contacts with Contact name and picture
Create SMS message and send it. (you can send an sms message by selecting a Contact from the Contacts list)

It is slow and doesn't look very good, but it should display in both QVGA and VGA. also, when you have send an sms it will currently not show up in the send items list

please note, for best user experience while scrolling or selecting rows please use the area on the name or phone number.

Whilst I do appreciate that this IS still an Alpha release, I just thought I'd mention a couple of issues I have found so far...

Please don't take this as criticism because it is in no way meant as such - purely so you know where a potential problem lies.

When selecting an item (on my WVGA screen), the item BELOW what I have selected is brought up... for example, if I choose to send ALAN an SMS, ALEX is chosen as the recipient as he is the next on the list below Alan in my contact list. The same is true when selecting a message to view.

Also the font size means parts of letters are not visible - but I understand that this may be a WVGA issue.....

But, never the less, great work so far, please keep up the great work!! Awesome project!!

:-)

thank you for your comments, you are correct in this. if you click on the area that is the name it should select the correct row, this is indeed a mistake and will be corrected.

Another issue I have found is that on my Touch HD (Blackstone), when I select the Contacts 'screen', only one page is available - in my case A, and 2 Bs! The scrollbar won't allow me to move down the page any further, nor does any kind of swipe or slide gesture bring any more contacts into view.

Try clicking and holding the area that contains a name and then try to scroll. This also has to do with the way the program is currently incorrectly recording clicks and movement.

Yep - that solved that issue - although the movement is very tricky to control accurately - but I do understand your program IS still being worked on!!

extract the entire folder and put the folder with its content on your device's internal memory or storage card. that should do it.

Definitely not. Look at when mb286 posted version 0.2. It's still happening.

A lot of people do not run Manila. Let alone 2.5, which still doesn't have a working VGA port. So it's still a great replacement for WM texting.

Hi all,

alpha 0.3:

Folder View (Swipe from right to left in inbox view), The idea here is that the folders can also be accessed, no real icons and not really working yet.

New SMS (Swipe from left to right in inbox view), Currently only SMS is supported, and the "unknown contact" option does not allow for sending an sms yet (suggestions on how the program should handle "unknown contacts' ,eg phone numbers that are not in the contact list, are welcome)

Slide2Send (in new message view)

Slide2Reply (in detail message view)

some default (color) skinning in the settings.xml

It should display in both QVGA,WQVGA and VGA,WQVGA.

still not very good looking, but please be patient :)

Well strictly that's not true. It's crashed about 5 times yesterday when I put it on, then I tried it on a whim today and it did *something*, but just gave a list of current SMSs in person order (I'm doing this from memory) because now it just crashes every time again.

Crash information:

I stumbled across this s/w by accident as I send cliff-hanger SMSs all the time when I want to put "...and then I" and end up doing "...and then [SEND]" which is right below shift. I appreciate you're about to bring out a new version so I'm happy to wait for that and test it, but I thought I'd mention this anyway in case it held some relevance to the development at this stage.

I've searched this forum for the same errors and not found them, but admit I've not read all 65 pages cover-to-cover, so forgive me if this turns out to be laughably simple. It did as I say do something one time, but just the one.

Best wishes,

cemapi.dll is a native windows dll, which makes it strange that an exception is thrown in taht dll. is this the only information that you recieve?

These are the rest infos:

cemapi.MsgStore.pIMsgStoreOpenEntry (IntPtr msgStore, SBinaiy& entryld, ObjectType type, IntPtr& entry)
in cemapi.MsgStore.OpenEntryAsFolder(By| te[] entryld)
inMAPIMsgStore.OpenFolder(IMAPIFolderI| Did)
in MAPIFolderID.OpenFolder()
in SmsCollection.RetrieveSmsInboxO
in SmsCollection..ctor()
in Formlnbox.StartupO
in MAPIMsgStore.OpenFolder(IMAPIFolderI Did)
in MAPIFolderID.OpenFolder()
in SmsCollection.RetrieveSmsInboxO
in SmsCollection..ctor()
in Formln box. Startup ()
in Slide2SendForm.OnLoad(EventArgs
e)
in Form._SetVisibleNotirV(Boolean fVis)
in Control.set_Visible(Boolean value)
in Application.Run(Form fm)
in Program.Main()

mb286, i want to make a suggestion!!

I think the slide bar and button should be bigger to more finger friendly use

don't you think??

Thanks

i personally do not think the button is to small, but i'll probably make the size of the button configurable (with some min and max boundaries)

Just some feedback on 0.4.5 alpha, tested on a HD2 with 1.48 WWE Stock ROM.

App and messages in inbox loads up fine, but scrolling and sliding is really unresponsive - swiping a lot only scrolls a little, and it takes several swipes to slide left and right.

When a message is displayed it also doesn't occupy the entire screen - only the top 3/4 - I can still see the inbox underneath. Is that intentional?

Agree that slide bar size should be adjustable for WVGA resolution screen users.

Looking forward to 0.5 beta :)

Thank you for your comments, i will look into the unresponsive issue, but i have not seen this problem on my device or in the emulator.

regarding the displaying of the message i also do not experience this problem, but perhaps it has something to do with the screen being WVGA. i will also look into this.

Cheers. Just an additional thought that crossed by mind, the unresponsiveness *might* be due to the fact that HD2 uses HTC's own Messaging service instead of the standard Microsoft one. I'll have to disable HTC Messaging to test theory... will report back when I get out of work.
