This is a very clean build of android / cupcake.
Credits for the kernel (zImage) go to DZO. This kernel is unmodified, it is his latest kernel
Credits for the system image go to many people, haykuro is the original source, then further modified by me to get data, market, and SD card working
The initrd is pretty much all mine now, with a radio library from DZO, srwalter, and myself
PROJECT HOME (http://code.google.com/p/vogue-android)
HOW TO GET IT RUNNING (http://code.google.com/p/vogue-android/wiki/HowToInstall)
SCREENSHOTS! (http://code.google.com/p/vogue-android/wiki/Screenshots)
DOWNLOADS (http://code.google.com/p/vogue-android/downloads/list)
UPDATE 27-June-2009:
Updated initrd with new RIL that provides:
-Grabs your carrier's name instead of "Android" for cdma devices.
mssmison uploaded a new TheDude image with partially working music. Check out the screenshots!
UPDATE 26-June-2009:
Updated initrd that provides:
-Automated backups of your data, just press a key when prompted and it'll show up in /sdcard/backups
-Filesystem checking of the SD card, should keep things from getting corrupted and from files disappearing from SD
UPDATE 24-June-2009:
-mssmison uploaded his themes
UPDATE 23-June-2009:
-Updated initrd with new RIL that provides:
*fixed SMS for Bell
*preliminary GPS support
*boot options for the SMS fix and for lcd density
-Updated system.img that provides:
*updated Maps.apk
*removed recovery.img
*preliminary GPS support
-Updated zImage that provides:
*preliminary GPS support
UPDATE 21-June-2009 evening:
-Updated initrd with new RIL that provides:
*Bug fixes on the 3G notification icons, sometimes it would show disconnected when connected etc.
*Supports reading the ESN and phone number from the radio. Check settings->about->status, your ESN will show up under IMEI.
*No longer using mountd, should free up a little memory
UPDATE 21-June-2009:
-Updated initrd with new RIL that provides:
*EV/1X status monitoring (will show 3G for EVDO and G for 1XRTT connections)
*Doesn't show connected, and won't "try" to connect, when disconnected in Modem
*Mute works! And you can un-mute too :D
-Updated system.img that provides:
*data connections work on initial boot, does not require a reboot
UPDATE 20-June-2009:
-Updated initrd with better modem controls, plus new RIL that properly handles call waiting ID and VMI for verizon/others
-Automatic timezone and time/date now supported!!!
-Google Sign-on supported
-Proper radio initialization implemented
UPDATE 18-June-2009:
-Updated initrd to support both 1.1 and 1.5 android, including new libreference (for call waiting ID and voicemail notification)
-back to using zImage per DZO's updates.
UPDATE 10-June-2009:
now using zImage-adb
UPDATE 08-June-2009:
split up the archive, updated initrd.gz fixes a bug where mountListener needed vold (vold now started at boot)

It looks like the developer's terminal isn't here in this release, just head to the market and download the better terminal that supports the on-screen keyboard.
Eventually I'll modify DZO's kernel to completely disable the blue keyboard, then the camera button will simply rotate the screen

Awesome fantastic work! Power collapse works perfectly and haven't come across any other bugs yet.
Thanks heaps.

I can't get this version to run. I also can't get DZO's 1.1 version to run. But TheDude 1.5b will run. I'm not sure what's going on.
Edit:
If I replace the system file in TheDude's folder with the system in the Ion folder and run Haret then Ion will run. But it will not run with the files inside this zip

Thanks for your efforts. I had built my own image last night but this one is a lot better than the one I made. Also has anyone tried the hero-saphire build? I built an image last night but couldn't get past the htc android boot splash. I would really love to see that new ui on the vogue.

The only differences in the files from thedude's folder and from this one is 1)default.txt: I use different defaults than mssmison does
2)zImage: I custom built the one in thedude's build using the 4/25 "non-gpu" kernel with working vibrate. The one I have in this ion build is DZO's latest kernel.
So I think your problem is that something in the latest zImage/kernel breaks your sd card... but if it works well with my custom kernel from thedude's build, you can go with that until we get a newer kernel from DZO

seems to take a while booting up or my phone is just stuck. it wont go pass were it says "android" before the splash screen. any ideas
vilord
8th June 2009, 11:33 PM
how long have you waited?
On my phone the first boot up it takes about 5 minutes at "extracting data.img" then another about 5 minutes after it initializes the modem before the splash screen comes up.
Once it finally comes up, and a couple reboots later, the total boot time from hitting run in haret to being at the home screen is about 2 minutes.

Thanks, the other image was killed my battery in 5 hours. Screen brightness apps are still broken though, did you see martin's note regarding folks building cupcakes (maybe we should call it baking? ha) need to includes some libraries or something, check the 1.1 thread, just posted today.
EDIT: Disregard, just needed to update the flashlight and fastbright. If an app doesnt work for you then try checking the market for available updates. Theres probably a new build available with cupcake support.
Thanks again, great work!

I checked and both of the libraries are already in this system... I'm still not sure about battery life, will have to do some more investigating, as mine seems to last forever sometimes and die quick others.
Also not sure what's up with screen brightness apps, I know that on my vogue it works fine in settings -> sound & display -> brightness
mssmison
9th June 2009, 01:54 AM
yeah from what we can tell google completely redid alot of things in this build. They added cache's for speed, as well as the brightness setting is just like in 1.1 (works) and battery life is alot better. I'm really glad you got this one working vilord.

I've been playing around for a while now and have had some browser crashes on even some lite sites. Force close comes up but is frozen, requiring a soft reset. Bummer, everything else seems to be pretty smooth. Max apps is set at 4.

I guess I don't understand what the different parts are. If I change the system file it changes the Android that's running. If I just change over the zimage from DZO's build then it still boots up TheDood's 1.5
Edit:
I'll try TheDood's zimage with DZO's other files. Is that what you meant to get 1.1 running so I can login? It boots through and goes to a black screen with a blinking red light with the occasional green light blinking.

I set it up for 4, but the modem comes on automatically now, which is nice. If we could bake in the calibration settings for the vogue that would be pretty cool, but I imagine if you did this it may differ depending on resolution settings, maybe?

there should be 5 files... data.gz, system.img, default.txt, initrd.gz, and zImage
put *all* of them in the root of your SD, you don't need an android folder at all.
you want to use DZO's system.img and data.gz at first, then once you set up your data and your google accounts, leave the data stuff alone (it will now be called data.img), and replace DZO's system.img with the one in the original post.

:D
-zImage is the kernel, the low-level stuff that talks to the sound driver and graphics driver and handles power management
-system is android itself, so you can have thedood's 1.5 system or you can have an ion system or you can have a 1.1 system
-initrd.gz this is the system launcher and it currently handles data connectivity and drives (so you can get to your data and your sd card)
-default.txt is just a settings file used by haret to initiate the kernel and attach the system launcher
-haret.exe is the windows application that reads default.txt and launches the kernel and initrd
-data.gz is a compressed data.img, this is your data storage.
And all of them go in the root of your storage card :)

for android 1.1, you need to have an active data session *before* you connect.
so bring up internet explorer and search for something and while the data arrows are showing up top, bring up android and then go to togga and connect.
aven_soulgazer
9th June 2009, 08:01 AM
When did it go back to that? Togga used to connect even if there hadn't been a previous data connection. At least I swore that had been the case.
With the new new 1.1 files I'm having the same problem with it freezing at saying android before going to the boot menu. I made and ate two sandwhiches while waiting for it to boot. So like 10 minutes or so.
Edit:
I had gotten the 4-22-09 version to boot up and connect to the internet using togga
Ok so 04-05-09 worked for me logging into google. Now time to try Ion.

For your vogue, you need to use the old zImage, try always using the zImage that I made for mssmison's thedude image...
Also, Togga is for 1.1 only and with the 1.1 initrd (won't work in 1.5) and modem is for 1.5 only and the new initrd.

using latest files and using dzos data.img
This happened to me. Most likely your data.img has been mangled with the shuffling of Android builds. Hopefully all your contacts are synced already, so I would recommend a clean install of DZO's latest build, then after setting up the Google sync services, reset and install either TheDude's stuff or Vilords themeless build.
Remember, it's important when switching builds, to change the default.txt appropriately.
It's hard to believe and I never would've thought it would happen, but us vogue users have not one, but THREE stable builds of Android to chose from for our phones; so experiment carefully!

The one I have in this ion build is DZO's latest kernel.
Does this mean that this build will work the the zImage-gpu (around 4/25 or something) on Martin's site? Some other Sprint users and I have had way better performance with that kernel. There's something about the new ones that bogs the phone down after a day or so of use.Hope we get this worked out as I'd like to stay up with the latest developments.

Yes, it should work with the zImage-gpu
But I think that vibrate was still broken in zImage-gpu, so ymmv.
The reason the phone is bogging down is due to memory usage being high, I'm looking into that in between my real work this morning.

Awesome. I'll stick with this kernel then. the vibrate issue is much more critical as it will completely drain a battery in a short period if you forget to disable vibrate notifications.
Performance seems to come back after a while if you let the phone sit. I am assuming that Android finally closes them, freeing up memory. I've been looking for an "app manager" of sorts to kill apps on demand. Anyone know of any on the market?

Firstly set max app processes to 3 or 4. that will close the oldest app after 3 are opened. That helps lots.

mssmison's solution is what helped the most for me. I set it to 3 and it stays pretty snappy. There's also a "close everything" app in the market place that helps a bit.

I can't get data working on this thing. I downloaded a 1.1 build, copied fresh files onto my SD card (all of them), booted into 1.1, set up my APN, got a data connection, successfully signed into Google services, rebooted, and then I copied the default.txt, zImage, initrd.gz, and system.img contained here, booted up Android again, and tried to connect. No luck for me.

It all looks good so far, except...
Each resolution also comes with a logging initrd that will create a log folder on your SD card. Only use this if you are trying to figure out a problem, as leaving it running could fry a small part of your flash (SD cards have a very low number of maximum write cycles)
What does this mean? Anything I should worry about?

is there anyway to build off the very first gpu enabled kernal?
my phone went from peppy and fast to sluggish and slow with a keyboard. i even put running apps at 2 and it's soooooooo slow. i dont know what's wrong with the latest kernals. i know others have this problem as well. right now winmo is faster that what i have right now. i'm not trying to complain because i'm grateful for all the progress but with all the new updates after the first gpu kernal come sluggish performance.
if the phone rings it will be 2 rings before it actually shows who is calling......if i try to pull up one app it takes all the processing power and doesn't pull up for 3-4 seconds....
seriously try the first gpu kernal compared to the latest one, it's a HUGE difference.
is there anything i can do about this sluggish performance?

Just curious, are you on a sprint touch? I have these same issues, and yes, I ALWAYS set max apps, but there is something that slows down sprint touches (at least mine, and dzo obviously doesnt see this or he'd have fixed it im sure) after a few hours, and even quicker on cupcake, seems to be triggered by heavy data usage...which makes sense because it's probably a memory thing.

Did you make any changes in the default or anything else? When I've tried I've had absolutely no luck trying just that. It booted through and instead of a splash screen it was a black screen with white dot in top left. Then after a bit the led started blinking different pattern. I pressed power button, end button, slide up and down. Nothing seemed to wake it up.

Not yet, we need to get a working windows ethernet protocol driver first. That is one of the next things on my list :)

I'll download the source of the first GPU kernel and update it with the code for vibrate to function properly... It won't have all the other changes since then tho...
that's fine i'd just like it to work like it did. it's sooo slow, it's almost un-useable......wish you could see it.
i'm not sure if it's updated already, tried the kernal link and it's a dead link

this is what i did. started with a fresh formated sd card, loaded up that older dzo's build and let gmail sync. after that i erased everything except for the fresh data img. then added everything that was in the ion build folder and used the zimage from thedudes build. i think taking that data img and using it stright with the ion build helps.

As for the slowness, don't worry, I can see it... my phone was doing it yesterday, I tried to do some debugging to find out what was killing it, but the debugging tools kept dying. I'm pretty sure some process went runaway and filled up RAM and was sucking up the whole CPU.
There's a "performance" mod I saw in the dream forum that might help us here, it sets the kernel to kill off a runaway process when it starts to take down the system.

The zImage-adb method does not require linux at all.
take the zImage-adb from his site (http://it029000.massey.ac.nz/vogue/files/zImage-adb), rename it as zImage on your SD card, and boot back into android, then follow the tether-bot instructions here (http://graha.ms/androidproxy/)

i hope that solves it but my phone starts out slow. i dont know if yours gradually gets to that point but that's how my starts out.
i wish i could figure it out myself i just have zero comprehension when it comes to this stuff.
all i know is that something must of been changed for the worse between now and back when the first gpu kernal came out. i've even tried to use the old gpu kernal and besides the vibration issue it's still slow!!!:confused:

I will be able to rebuild it with ADB next week once I get back.
If you don't mind checking, can you try using the "zImage-gpu" kernel from dzo's site and see if it will boot up with that? That kernel has the vibrate bug, but I'm already planning to rebuild it with the fixed vibrate issue and with fixed ADB, and it'd be easier to maintain just one fork.

im and googletalk are different apks. Vilord didn't include those in his build.
I would think if you took 10 seconds to google 'fbook.apk' you might find it though...

What do you have your power suspend mode set to? The default-vogue from Martin uses 0 which is called power collapse suspend. I use 1 which is just power collapse.
I don't know the difference, but my phone wakes up/notifies on SMS (or at least it used to, haven't gotten one with the very latest initrd, but none of the changes would have affected that)

double check that your timezone is set correctly, or it will show the wrong times for all your appointments and emails. Also, you might have to go onto your gmail account settings (from your laptop) to be sure your location is set right for timezones.
Coming soon is an update to the RIL for automatic timezone and times from the network, as well as support for voicemail notification from verizon (and other carriers).
We might even get working call waiting id!
Look for it this weekend.

red flash is power collapse (powersave/suspend), orange flash is charging, green flash is fully charged or normal/idle.
Eventually we'll make the changes so android controls the leds instead of the kernel, at that point the colors may change.

Here's something I've been wondering:
A text message is basically an e-mail with nothing in the subject field.
In Windows Mobile, I can send a text message to an e-mail address (without having the data connection up) and it works just fine. Even better, I can reply directly to a text message that I've been sent via e-mail, and my message will show up in that person's inbox (again, with no data connection involved).
This doesn't work in Android. Whenever I enter an e-mail address in the "To:" field, Android immediately converts the message from SMS to MMS.
Even worse, when I receive a text sent from an e-mail account, the sender's "phone number" is displayed as "6245" and you cannot reply to this message (you get the "invalid destination" error). The sender's e-mail address is still listed in the body of the text, so you know who sent you the message, but yea...
I wouldn't think this is an issue based on provider since it works in Windows Mobile and doesn't work in Android...
So is this a limitation on the messaging application or is this a broader issue with how Android receives these messages?
EDIT (below):
So I figured out how to get it working. The text must be sent to "6245" and the body of the text must begin with the e-mail address of the recipient, followed by a space, then followed by whatever message you want to send.
Though this works, it's definitely not ideal. All texts that origate from (or are sent to) e-mail addresses will be put into the same "6245" thread in the messaging application. The whole point of a threaded messaging application is to keep all of these separate.
So I'm still not entirely sure, is this a limitation on the messaging application or is this a broader issue with how Android receives these messages?

I'm overriding rild.libpath in the initrd, so the initrd can be used with any system whether or not it has the latest RIL in it. This is a good thing, because I haven't updated the RIL in my system in about a month ;)

Ah OK. This image is great. Only issue is dialer looks wrong with ro.sf.lcd_density=128 at 320x240. My fixed phone.apk and contacts.apk don't work and cause phone to force close due to missing resources. Maybe recompiling against a newer sync will fix it..
EDIT: Saw you went through and cleaned up some things -- there's also a recovery.img in the root of /system. Is it needed?

bangout - I had this problem when I first started with a blank data file, and newer initrd's will fix it when starting from scratch.... If you have adb working, you can fix it easily:
adb shell
chown 1000:1000 /data/app
then you should be set to go.
Is anyone else getting this, or is it just a fluke?

I don't know if this had been fixed a while ago, but i had read in the forums somewhere that purchased apps didnt work.
So as the title says, i tested this with lock2.0 and it worked fine... i bet it is simply since this new release is able to connect to google services
...
also i'm using the hi-res intrid and i like it a lot, but some appslike iconic memory slighly fall off the screen... (lock 2.0 does as well)... the small overlap isnt a huge deal and everything is still very useable... Is the overlap because high res intrid is still a different resolution than the HTC G1?
EDIT (from zapt0s):
...The screen on the vogue has a native resolution of 240x320. Displaying any other resolution on the screen requires scaling. A similar effect happens when you use a resolution other than your displays native resolution on an LCD monitor.
DZO implemented the scaling to allow us to use other apps that were designed for use on the HTC Dream (G1) and its much higher resolution screen (320 x 480). If you would rather have a crisper image and not be able to use some applications then you can change the resolution to 240x320 however if you wish to have more functionality then you will have to deal with the blurriness.
...
____
so is the current verison scaling is set to :mddi.width=320 mddi.height=428... and thats just a little off from the (320x480)... and i bet thats been tested to work the best.
___
i tested the raw 320X480 and it works, but it's out of proportion... the mddi.width=320 mddi.height=428 is definately my fav. it chops off a tad of some programs, but thats just the programs issue.
Thanks,
Ox

so, is there a way to make the cupcake keyboard appear in landscape mode? i read somewhere that someone was thinking about disabling dzo's keyboard for the cupcake release... (so this may just mean that we should just wait till thats complete)
i've had random success getting the landscape keyboard to appear, it seems almost like the OS is thinking that the slider keyboard (aka virtual slider keyboard) is out even though it's not
so is there a more exact series of buttons to press to ensure the landscape cupcake keyboard will appear?...
______
and a side question, i read that to calibrate the touch screen that you should bring up the virtual keyboad, hold down the red button, and tap all four corners of the screen with the stylus.---- Dos this do anything in the cupcake release, and is there any other way to calibrate the screen (or is it even necessary)
_____

Device memory for apps is limited by the data.img file, not the physical storage space on your card. DZOs later images have 128M I think. I am running this one and have all of my must have apps installed with plenty of room to test things out with.

I'm overriding rild.libpath in the initrd, so the initrd can be used with any system whether or not it has the latest RIL in it. This is a good thing, because I haven't updated the RIL in my system in about a month ;)
katmandu: network time is separate from location based services.
But... stay tuned :D I've heard some mutterings from my contact on the east coast that GPS may be on the near horizon. And no, I won't elaborate.
New proper data status is pretty cool. Man, you all have breathed a new life into this project, keep up the awesome work.
btw, I'm running the your ion system and init with dzos latest kernel...havent had a slow down yet, but havent kept running too long before rebooting to install all of the updates you have been cranking out!
And OMG about GPS, that would complete the package, no need for a new phone until sprint finally releases an Android (anyone hear anything as of late?)

Just a thought, but I noticed that many SMSes that came through with an earlier version (the previous or second-to-previous one, perhaps), are back to not coming through properly. I get weird SMSes from Rogers clients and a Bad SMS encoding from another guy on Bell using Windows Mobile (disclaimer:I'in in B/Hell).
Was there any RIL or library modifications that could explain the SMS behaviour reverting to a "vanilla" DZO 1.1 build?

I'm confirming my "regression bug": On a VOGU100 activated with Bell Mobility in Canada, an SMS sent from a HTC 6800 (Titan?) with Windows Mobile 6.1 will come through with the June 20th build (text is parsed and SMS is received normally), but not with the June 21th (it will be "received" but will show up as "Bad SMS encoding").
Related to this, I suspect that my issue receiving SMSes from older phones or from Rogers users may also be affected.

As a previous user suggested maybe you should have a read through dzo's thread and his site for instructions. You need to play around with stuff before you start shooting off questions. Yes it works fine with 6.5.

Hi all, just wanted to say I am very impressed... wow.
Some questions... do your phones get kinda hot using it? Can I actually leave android running full time?
I read in an earlier post that camera support is not there yet... I was messing around with the SnapTell app on DZo's build.... if any of you have played with it on the iPhone... its pretty slick.... works great on the Vogue too. Can't wait to have that support here in your build. The keyboard is the reason I will stick with it for sure.
So if I want to try out new builds... should i be deleting all the old files? or should i just replace some of them? I guess syncing my contacts back is easy enough... but it would be cool if I did not have to reinstall any apps i download.
Either way just wanted to say... great build... i am always surprised by what this little phone is capable of. :)

Put all files as listed in the original post on my SDCard, edited default.txt (panel type was 3)... but I get an error on booting during the linux screen, and it dumps me to a command prompt.
It says:Please wait... extracting Data Image
gzip: can't open '/sdcard/data': File exists
Failed
Failed to extract Data Image
/bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off

(EDIT)
Figured it out - I had reset the phone during the flashing white screen when trying to get default.txt working, and it left a half-written data image on the phone. It is too stupid to delete the image if it is broken, so I deleted it myself and now it seems to be loading, but is now "stuck" on extracting data image, and doesn't seem to be moving. It has been several minutes - how long is this supposed to take??

Several tries later, still no luck. Discovered that you have to (apparently) extract data.gz to data.img which is a 128mb file (after 10 minutes it had only extracted 10mb on my phone in the launcher) so I did that from my PC, and now it fails again with the following:
Copying sounds
cp: cannot preserve permissions of '/sdcard/media/audio/alarms': Operation not permitted
cp: cannot preserve permissions of '/sdcard/media/audio/notifications': Operation not permitted
and then just sits there.
So obviously there are things required to be done to get this working that aren't listed.. What am I not guessing?

First, I do enjoy doing it, and I'm really getting happy with the results. I'd begun to loath windows mobile, and this was a very welcome change.
Second, I'm trying to make a career move into development, and also move to the Boston area at the same time... So this is a great little side project I can mention in interviews ;)
I suppose I'll add a donate link to the first page, but honestly I'm doing this for me as much as for anyone else.
Wbuju, once we get a working camera and gps I'll look at building a flashable install that'll go on the phone's memory, but until then, most people want to leave their WM installation intact. Proxy settings are in settings->wireless controls->mobile networks->access point names->Android

Thats a bit odd... I'm not sure why its happening to you, as with the sync options turned on I haven't had a problem with my data going bad in a while. Is there any way you could take a pic of the screen when it happens that would at least be partially readable? It should be saying something about running e2fsck and whether it passed or not.
Also, a class 6 card would make this happen less... Martin is working on putting the android data in the phone memory instead of the SD card, that would also help.

The problem is the filesystem driver we're using. We are running EXT2 for the data image, which doesn't like being turned off without being shut down/unmounted.
I'm investigating alternatives.

one other issue, it seems there's a new version of maps in the market, but it won't install (will just hang after download is 100% complete). Maybe as a quick fix, if it's not protected, you could just find out where it's stored temporarily and replace maps.apk with that in the system.img. The new version has some nice things, like google transit support.
Edit: also re: the filesystem issue. Originally ext3 was used, but the journalling was causing SDcards to die very quickly (SDcards usually lasted a couple of weeks with the version as of a year ago or so). One solution would just be to implement a proper shutdown--i.e., right now when you long press end-call and hit power off, I'm guessing it just cuts power without unmounting. Just make it sync and unmount before cutting power.

i had a problem with vilords blank data, so i just used dzo's data.gz
(so use vilords: default, haret,intrid.gz,&system.img)&&(use dzo's: data.gz &zImage) {you dont need any other files or folders}
with this setup it worked perfectly for me...
i want to modify the default to autocalibrate my screen (i have pannel 3- sprint), if it works i'll post the settings so others can see if it works for them
_____
EDIT:
sprint panel 3 htc vogue auto calibrate keyboard settings (vilords hires intrid)
(i added the following text right before the ppp.username in the default.txt):
vogue-ts.XMIN=431 vogue-ts.YMIN=351 vogue-ts.XMAX=3727 vogue-ts.YMAX=3759 vogue-ts.PMAX=374
works perfectly for me, this sooo much more accurate than the default , check "dev tools"-> "pointer location" to see if it lines up for you

thanks so much to dzo, vilord, thedude, and others who have put in the time on this impressive project -- based on the reviews, i'm excited to get it up and running on my touch.
i seem to be having a problem getting the program to load the first time -- it loads the data image fine, but then gets stuck on a line reading:
---[end trace d65a0f19....]---
i let it sit for maybe 20-25 minutes on this screen without any luck. i've read through this thread and can't seem to find a solution to this problem -- any help would be much appreciated. thanks!
Any chance you have a digicam and can send me a picture of the screen you are seeing? I'd like to get this resolved but I don't see it here.
Thanks!

one other issue, it seems there's a new version of maps in the market, but it won't install (will just hang after download is 100% complete).
I just installed the new Maps on my phone with no errors... any chance you could get logcat trace of why it won't install?
in regards to the FS, someone on the G1 has it unmounting SD on shutdown, so maybe there's a way to follow the same procedure and unmount data on shutdown, I'm asking.

3rd that. I've got it too.
For the sake of information, this is about
I'm confirming my "regression bug": On a VOGU100 activated with Bell Mobility in Canada, an SMS sent from a HTC 6800 (Titan?) with Windows Mobile 6.1 will come through with the June 20th build (text is parsed and SMS is received normally), but not with the June 21th (it will be "received" but will show up as "Bad SMS encoding").
Related to this, I suspect that my issue receiving SMSes from older phones or from Rogers users may also be affected.
It's actually an intermittent bug. For whichever reason that eludes me, sometimes the SMSes get through untouched, sometimes they get a Bad Encoding, sometimes they display incorrectly (chinese-ish or weird characters). I can't track the source, because the incoming texts come from either txt.bell.ca, a Titan (on bell), a Motorola Z10 (on rogers) or an Audiovox 8200 (on bell) (yes, this one: http://www.cellphones.ca/cell-phones/audiovox-8200/ - My fiancée's. You may now die of laughter.)

Two ways,
if you have ADB working, after a failed one comes through just type "adb logcat -b radio > radio.log", then ctrl-c after about 30 seconds.
Or, install "Better Terminal Emulator", then the next time one of these comes through...
Open terminal. ignore all the quotes in the following, they're just there for illustration...
Type "su"
password is "vogue"
type "logcat -b radio > /sdcard/radio.log"
then after about 30 seconds hold down the middle of the dpad and push "c" (this is ctrl-c) then type exit twice
then grab the radio.log from your phone and email it to me.

tony, please follow these instructions to create a dmesg file and send it my way, then I can try to see what went wrong and/or work with Martin to figure it out.
Can you make a file in the same place as haret called debug.txt with this in it:
pwf dmesg 0x00600000 0x00040000
Then boot android and get it to crash or lock up, now reboot into wince, run haret and change default.txt to debug.txt, and click run. It will create a file called dmesg on your phone, send it to me and I will try to see what has gone wrong.

The reason I'm doing so many updates is twofold.
Proxy settings are in settings->wireless controls->mobile networks->access point names->Android
thanks for all your work man if there is anything i can help with just let me know, i do set up my adb but i think since the vogue cant really write to the micro sd card most of the program paths are not flashed to the card when writing the data.img but all in all your work is very much appreciated

Have you tried my ion builds? They are reported as being a little faster for some people.
Same symptom as vilords system.img. Starts out flying, then after about 4-5 hours going home (exiting out) from data-intense apps (beyondpod, browser, scoreboard) the phone starts really lagging. It's a bit different than the previous "slowdowns" that caused everything (in app menus, etc) to slow, this just affects repainting the home screen with icons.
I read previously that it might be a slower-class sd card, does this sound like it might be the issue? I'm sure that my sd card is not the highest class as far as performance.

i have the slowest class sd card and my android is fast. are you using all the "parts" from the same build or are you piecing them all together from different developers. i think that was my problem the first time. i used to have your exact same problem. also if i were you i'd invest into "advanced task manager" in the marketplace, it's only a buck and it give you the ability to close out apps that are running in the backround.

"You need to be able to run unsigned apps, as the Haret launcher is not signed."
I googled this as I've had problems with the previous builds of Android ( it resulted in losing my ability to run all 3rd party programs) and had to hard reset my phone to get WM back. I have already posted about how the various builds DO effect the native OS. It was nice to see this included in the instructions, but I could not find anything posted on HOW to allow unsigned apps to run. Could someone point me in the right direction please?

try using all your parts from one developer and see how that works. for me i was having the same problems you were until i downloaded the thedudes themed rom tweaked by mssmison. do exactally the following and let me know how it works for you:
go here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=523472
download "Themed TheDude build" (since it has the full package in it)
delete all android files in your sd card, put all files (except data.img, get a new one or keep the one you have) in your sd card like you already know how to do.
then download the system.img from "Hero ION theme build 1" and use that system.img, then boot it up and you should be good.
this is what i did and it worked for me. i can imagine your having problems because you are piecing together your own build from different developers that might not work well together seamlessly. literally i only have android files (other than my data.img) from mssmison working with my android, this is what i did and hopefully it works for you.
not to take away from vilords build though, because i'm sure it's awesome. i just haven't tried it myself and am giving you my own personal experiences. ultimately my point being is try to stick to one developer and see if it works

The reason for this is that memory usage seems to be steadily increasing, something has a leak. Thedude's build from mssmison uses my old initrd and my old zImage (modified from a 2-month old DZO kernel) with a different system. Switch to the red ion system (which is just a themed version of what I've got) and basically all you have is an old zImage and an old initrd with everything else the same.
JaredKelly, why are you using dzo's data.gz? That was made for 1.1... what symptoms are you seeing with the new data.gz?

If I understand correctly, you want me to run the old zimage and init. Sooo...what system.imgs are compatible with your newest inits? I've tried the red and the green, both good themes, btw. And yes, I still have a 128 data image that was from 1.1, but then again, we had to use that to set up the login, so how could we possibly have one specific to 1.5?
I used to have this down pretty good, now I'm just a bit confused. wtf:confused:
btw, I look forward to getting it running reliably on my hardware, it's wicked when it works.
EDIT: You know what, dude...I never looked at dl ing your supp tools. I'll bet I get it this time.

Katmandu: You want to use the new data.gz from my suppTools, you want to use the new initrd, and you can take your pick of system.img's, *all* should be compatible with both the data.gz and the initrd.
You don't need to set up your sync in 1.1 anymores, that was one of the biggest milestones in this new initrd, it gets rid of a *ton* of random application crashes etc.
As for zImage, I use the latest, but if you have better luck with an older one, feel free to use it.
Tony, looks like I made a mistake, the dmesg output was blank... apparently it only works if you can soft reset, not if you pull the battery. And, you need to use this command in debug.txt:
pwf kdmesg 0xe0000 0x20000

I've never seen that before, looks like there is something odd about your phone, the i2c driver is failing. Must be that i2c is not initialised correctly what rom are you using, try booting android while swiping your finger across the screen, that might keep the hardware powered up.

Prairiefire posted in Martin's thread saying that he could reliably cause a "Bad SMS Encoding" message (it's weird how it happens for him). That may help figure out the problem (or at least another problem we might not have known about). I've linked his post below.

UPDATE 23-June-2009:
Note on this release: The GPS code was written in its entirety by other people, 99% of the work is from srwalter. Since it is all out there, I think he is okay with me posting it, but if he tells me otherwise I'm going to immediately pull it, and I don't want anyone else to repost.
Disclaimer: This GPS code has very little testing. No guarantees that it will work or not, that it will work after a reboot, or that it won't let the magic smoke out of some important chips in your phone. Please don't turn on GPS unless you're willing to take the risk (and possibly kill your battery).
Please don't spam the list asking for GPS help.
Please don't ask why it won't tell you how fast you are going, or why it won't tell you your altitude.
That is why it is called preliminary. Much of it still needs to be added.
And right now it only does true GPS, no triangulation, and no A-GPS, so may be slow to fix, needs a clear sky, and will drain the battery very quickly.
-Updated initrd with new RIL that provides:
*fixed SMS for Bell
*preliminary GPS support
*boot options for the SMS fix and for lcd density
-Updated system.img that provides:
*updated Maps.apk
*removed recovery.img
*preliminary GPS support
-Updated zImage that provides:
*preliminary GPS support

I'll be giving your new update a spin for a bit tonight.
You removed the link to Martin's zimage in your first post. I think it's very useful to keep that link there or at least add the link that leads to Martin's home page so people can download it from there. I'm not sure which method he would prefer (if any at all).
Man, you pump out updates constantly. I'm sure you know already, but I still think you underestimate how many people appreciate this work.
srwalter, you've just made a lot of people very happy. Regardless of how well it works (as I will be trying it shortly), you've taken GPS from barely a possibility to practically imminent. Congrats and kudos to you.
The same applies to everyone else involved, of course.
Enough of the fawning, it's time to give this baby a go!

Thanks for the assistance. Last night I reformatted my card and loaded everything from your supp tools including a fresh data.img, your latest init and dzo's latest kernel. Works a lot better now, but still have a slow "going home" experience when coming off of the browser or any apps that use the browser, ie FB. Very reproducible, on my device anyways. Doesn't matter how long I've been booted, if I pop open the browser and then go home, it takes like 10 seconds to load icons and another few to be able to swipe the screen again.
Could the culprit be the browser? I tried steel and it seems a little better.
EDIT: I also notice that once this happens, I get the blinking green light of battery death.
And thanks for the GPS tease ;)

He may or may not have removed it per srwalter's request.
Howto Request: How can I get the "hi-res" out of this initrd? lcd.density mentions width and height, but those were untouched for older, hires-enabled initrd's. I am at a loss, for I like the smaller sh*t :)

The new initrd needs the new default.txt to configure the lcd density.

You don't need a user/pass to connect to the net. The defaults should be fine. It still is the ion build from before, just an updated file that's all.

No, you're not blind, I am. I forgot to upload it, was tired last night and rather than checking if everything was there I just checked to make sure there were "all 6" files. But I forgot that with audioResources it is now 7. (And the zImage is now posted)
audioResources by the way you only need that if your ringtones get messed up, otherwise it should just work fine.

just set lcd.density=128 to get what the older hires enabled initrd's looked like. Changing the width and height resolution is optional

Okay I just tested and there's a typo regarding lcd.density. As soon as you set it to anything it won't boot. I'll fix it at lunch.

not a spam... but is there a method we can use to demo/test the curent beta-beta-GPS funtionality? I tried google maps, and it just exits... so i'm guessing that current beta-beta-GPS is either just available via console or a very limited app... so if its something not too crazy involed pass it on...
Thanks,

HOLY MONKEY IT WORKS!!!
Make sure in settings under location, enable GPS. I did this, fired up google maps (new version, download was slow, but it did finally install for me) and told it to "find my location. It did within a few seconds, and I am indoors, though near a bunch of windows and it is a clear day.
WOW, TOO COOL!! Will continue to test and provide feedback, which is what this is really for afterall.
THANK YOU!!!

oxsolid, you may need a new data.gz to get google maps to load...
