I have both the Touch HD and the Touch Pro 2

Yesterday I compared the cameras of each phone, unfortunately the Touch HD camera shoots better and sharper pictures.

All settings were on AUTO on both phones, however I can clearly say that the the screen of TP2 is much more clear and brighter than the HD.

When you compare the pics on the phones, the Touch pro 2 pictures look much better, when you compare these two photos on the scrren of your computer, you can see that the HD camera shoots better pictures because of the 5MP advantage.

Here is the results, the results are pretty obvious ....... unfortunately.

have you tried other setting in pro2?, the difference is too big... In fact, pro2 camera seems to be from a phone 3-4 years ago....

Quality: super-fine
More Sharpness?

Here are 3 more pictures, the first two are fom Touch pro 2 and the last one obviously Touch HD .

Now , Both cameras are at SUPER FINE - WIDE SCREEN all other settings are AUTO on both cameras.

HD : at 5MP
TP 2 : at 3MP

(these values are the highest possible)

HD is using much more of noise suppression and much less of artificial sharpening.

In fact, the default TP2 sharpening setting produces horribly over-sharpened photos. One should definitely dial it down a notch or two.

With all that said, HD does produce better images.

Then again, it is more of a multimedia phone, whereas the TP2 is a business phone.

Whether we like it or not, that's how the suits in marketing differentiate the products and segment us as consumers.

Looks to me like the TP2 is either receiving less light (aperture size), or is simply not as capable in low light conditions. It would be interesting to see a comparison in outdoor daylit conditions.

You on the original camera app of the touch hd or a updated one?
Cause if ur using updated one than this is cause by bad lens (3mp)

Cause i'm using the Topaz version 5mp and it makes good pix, and when I used the rhodium one (with the 5mp hack) it still made good pictures.

I'd assumed they were indoors, given the wallpaper and lights in the background :P

If they are outdoors, and your shirt is in sunlight then that really is woeful compression!

I was there when the test photos were taken so I can say that the HD had Duty's XT 3.7 which is the same camera sw version as stock TP2.

I have used both cameras and in my opinion:
• HD: definitively better camera than TP2 but also definitively less fun. It is extremely slow taking photos and you really need to convince the people to stay still for ever. For any other light that is not exteriors you should forget using it as it is nearly useless. The camera switches to a low light setting making it slow and blurry.
• TP2: it can not compete with the quality of the HD in exteriors as the photos of the HD are excellent. In low light or interiors is a winner as it takes good pics even in low light. I have taken pics even in a dark pub. You must change the setting of the camera in options as the sharp is too high and produces artefacts.

What's the 5mp hack?, sorry if this is a stupid question but I cant find any references to it anywhere?, does it improve the camera at all or is it just a bigger picture with even worse quality images?

thanks

One thing that I recomend is to remove the super wide screen format that by default uses the phone. It simply cuts the pic to do it narrower resulting a smaller pic. If you remove it in the setting section you get a pix with 2048X1536, that means 3.15 MP. Also change sharp effect from 3 to at least 2. It is amazing the detail that capture in country side pics. If you prefer softer pics you always can reduce further.

your kidding.... just because of the Camera? Camera isnt the primary function of a smart phone, hell its not even the secondary function.. and your going to judge an entire phone just based of how good of a picture it takes?

I could care less myself.. I have a 10mp canon if i want to snap pics. Reguardless, all the benifits of the TP2 outweigh the ones for the HD.. plus, i currently have a 3125.. which has a 1mp camera in it.. So any upgrade is an upgrade for me. lol

No the rhodium camm app uses 3mp on the touch hd. With the hack you can use 5mp using the rhodium camm app. Dutty made it!

Yes, I'm not going to upgrade my kaiser to a phone with a WORSE camera, I'll wait to another one...

And I also have a canon digital reflex with prime lens, a lot of years making photos... And the fact is that if they CAN put a MUCH better camera, I'm not going to allow so bad one!.
I'm really disappointed because I wanted to buy this phone, but there are a lot of trips WITHOUT my reflex... I want a good camera (kaiser one is fine)

sorry if i am wrong but are we missing the obvious here? tp2 - 3.15 mpx and touch hd - 5mpx. touch hd photos should win hands down. like i said the only time one can tell the differences is wen the pics are blown up like in the shots before. maybe post some smaller 6x10 photos or something. when looking at pics on both devices one can't tell the difference. actually look better on tp2 due to higher screen res. also think that really can't compare the 2 phones as diferent form factor and some obvious differences. also tp2 is businnes phone where touch hd is multemedia. thats my opinion so if anyone disagree thats cool:cool:

The video camera of the HD sucks, you can not shoot moving objects easily as there is too many frames are disappeared. I didn't shoot any videos on the TP2 yet ......

When I have the time, I'll shoot a video on both phones too :)

I have to say ... the video for me is far more important than stills quality. It lets you capture situations in detail - like car accident evidence etc ... but it also gives you very credible near Hi-8 (showing my age) quality footage of just about any situation.

The big irritation I had since the N95 and E90 I had (temporarily) was the lack of VGA video recording on WM devices.

I think the stills are ok on the TP2 - much better than the TyTNII ... but the video recording leaves it leagues ahead of the HD - QVGA is not only horribly small (VGA looks good on 40" LCD) but is also slow and badly pixelated.

Paul.

Video quality is fine for me in TP2.. but... are you serious about Image quality to be better than TyTNII???

Here I post some photos i've just made (with my TyTN II)... check them to see if you keep thinking the image quality of the tp2 is better than Kaiser....

i will agree with you on this one! i also have a tytn 2 and tp2 shots are better. really don't see the big deal re camera to be honest as the device outperforms both da HD and tytn 2!

OK, guys as promised here are the VIDEO comparision .

NOW, both HD and TP2 has factory default settings. I did not change any settings at all.

I can see that TP2 is clearly the champion this time.

Here are the videos, I was going to post them in their original .mp4 format but somehow this forum did not accept my .zip files.

So see them on Youtube instead.

Yep, the TP2's quality is far better, unfortunately the 15fps of the TP2 makes it stream a bit worse (jump some frames) than the HD with it's 30 fps... Why couldn't they make it 30fps!?

doublecheese
13th June 2009, 09:34 AM
What I don't understand is, why don't they just install a 5MP camera with 30fps video rec. Why keep the camera 3.2MP ? I don't know.

They did it with HD already , why not in a phone which is supposed to be better than HD ? I think by some small tricks they are forcing us to buy the Touch Pro 3 .

So far I had some many phones, I was a serious Sony Ericsson P series follower : P800, P900i, P910i, P990i, P1i then to HTC TP, HTC HD, HTC TP2 and until now I still can't say that , OK THAT'S IT , Finally I have the phone that has all the specs I needed !!!!!

my hd doesn't take photos like yours doublecheese. pixelation and bad coloring everywhere. the blacks are green too. :(

EDIT: NVM. Adjusted some settings, and it now looks beautiful.

Video camera quality is garbage though. i have to decrease the brightness to get some decent framerates.
