thingonaspring
12th June 2009, 06:41 PM
Thingonaspring WM6.1_21040_21051 V1.1
V1.1 Changes :-
- WM5Torage updated to 1.9 and working
- Fixes to file associations
- Flash Disk 28mb (IE Cache, cookies and history default to this drive)
- TCPMP 0.81 now has better WMV support (WMA9pro not working yet)
- Bluetooth headsets and wireless stereo (A2DP) now work
- A2DP is difficult to test as my wireless headset is not great, your mileage may vary
- Buttonsetting page - added extended buttonsettings.
- PocketRAR updated to latest version
- More execution trust certificates removed
- Additional Certificate Authority root certificate added
Universal WM6.1 21040_21051
21040 XIP
21051 SYS
4mb Pagepool
33.8Mb free RAM on clean boot
28mb Flash Disk
Removed :-
- Windows Media Player
- Office OneNote
- Customer Satisfaction (SQM)
- FirmWareUpdate
- Catalog
- Entertainment (games)
- Transcriber
- Getting started
- Backdrop and bootsplash images
- and lots more annoying MS nonsense ;-)
Included :-
- TCPMP 0.81 fully integrated to replace Windows Media. Suports WMA/WMV/FLV/FLAC/OGG/DIVX/MP3.......
- PocketNotepad
- PocketRAR
- XPDF
- PSShutXP
- Dutty's SDHC driver package (tested with 2/4/8/16gb)
- PimBackup
- JWright's Network Plugin
- TaskManager 3.1
- TotalCommander 2.5
- MSN Messenger (the old one that eats less RAM)
- Remote Desktop Client
- FDCTaskSwitcher (press the backlight button)
- WM5torage (working and updated to v1.9)
This build uses extremely simple layouts for Today and Dialer screens.
The spartan white backgrounds may look clunky, but the fact that they use no backdrop image saves >1mb of ram at all times :-)
This rom also leaves out bootsplash screens, so you will see a black screen on boot, followed by a white screen.
Tap the white screen to begin using the device on 1st boot.
Drivers, XIP section, registry, pagepool and filesystem have all been optimised for speed and RAM.
Priviledge execution certificate checking (and unnecessary certificates) have been removed to save CPU cycles, registry space and whatever other resources that crap was wasting.
Every single EXE, DLL, MUI, CPL and plugin has been made into a module - with the exception of .NET libs (can't be modular) and one or two specific DLLs that will not boot in modular form.
I wanted to remove everything unnecessary and leave the maximum resources available.

It's nice to see a performance oriented ROM for our UNI.
Will try to flash it tonight.. Is there a performance option to overclock the CPU speed?
just to share my thought, I think a vanilla ROM optimised for performance should have these mandatory apps:
1. performance setting to overclock CPU speed
2. Advanced config
3. wkTASK manager (the best i ever used) / other task manager
4. SDHC support
5. WM5torage
6. mortscript support for oxios hibernate
7. Of course, oxios hibernate or other apps to recover our precious, precious RAM.
for multimedia, the best & RAM efficient apps that i've ever used :
1. TCPMP player for video
2. S2P for music
3. S2V for picture viewer
it's just my thought.. for our Uni has very little RAM (at least for 64mb standard version) any other suggestion will be nice :)

Downloading.
Good to see someone working on this device.
Would post my experience.
One question to EXPERTS
Is there any limit how many times the DOC of Unoversal can be formatted?
Because I use Cotulla Q3 rom and to change to some other rom I have to format DOC everytime....so please comment.
(Or should I start a new thread for my querry):D

Wow, nice to have you back Thing. Thought we'd lost you. Loved your last ROM... along with it's kitchen... however as you say, I think that was well over a year ago.
I've just flashed and installed another ROM. However, I'll give this one a go now.
Awe come on, "This file is neither allocated to a Premium Account, or a Collector's Account, and can therefore only be downloaded 10 times"
Can someone upload somewhere else please?

Had no idea rapidshare started putting a 10 file limit on uploads. Not nice.
Less nice is that I don't have the file with me - it's at work.
Sorry to mess everyone about, I'll re-up the ROM on monday morniing (GMT) and up the kitchen too.

Bluetooth not working...do I need some 3rd party app?
Standard ringtone only!And I can't add another ringtone,is there any way ?
On soft reset it has 33 MB RAM.:D
With all the apps (Resco / MSVC etc... but no SPB stuff) I still get ~30MB.:D
Looks are lesser than pure vanilla though. But it is already expected.
Is it a final release or beta.

First impressions...
takes me a little while to install all my favourite apps, as it really is vanilla! However, even after filling up with all my favourite junk, I'm still at 25-30MB free! woohoo!
No known problems yet. iGo working well (even though File system cache is disabled)
Could do with getting rid of MSN stuff, so awaiting the kitchen :) (fring so much more versatile). Also prefer Adobe to xpdf, but again, kitchen will sort that.
Old skin on calculator and the phone doesn't look so good with white screen. Zips look blank in Total Commander, but they do open ok. The today screen (as thing promised) is extremely bland. However, adding all my stuff to is (last shot) still didn't dent the memory too much :D
There is no Flash Disk and no extendedROM Storage. This is a huge disappointment :(. However as I tend to use mainly one SD card, it is liveable with, but I would like to see this wasted memory utilised if possible?
wm not supported in TCMP, you'll need to put the usual .dll into windows.

Ok, there is one problem that I can't live with. Because there's no flash/storage I put my email and IECache on SD card. However on reset, a folder 'Storage Card' gets created, and the SD card gets name 'Storage Card2'. Of course this mucks up all shortcuts.
Thing, please give us Storage or/and ExtendedROM.
Also I cannot change the Ring sound - it just doesn't find any (they're wma).
With everything else, I am well impressed.

First impression really good... after installing all my fav app still around 23mb free..... liked TCPMP replacing windows media player.... wish IE could also be replaced with something lite..... the only concern is the dialer screen ... looks so unusual as got in habit of black and no flash disk & extenal rom ????:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:
But stable and fast....:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

that's maybe because email is being checked before the sd is available. if the email check gets delayed, most probably is solved.
i also use sd for ie cache and if for some reason the sd isn't available the storage card directory is created.

Morning all,
Thanks for all the feedback and testing.
The kitchen is uploading as we speak, and I'll get looking into those problems - not least the lack of flash disk.
[Edit] - kitchen is up, see 1st post.

That's great, thanks Thing.
Just another one that's a little annoying - the last page in settings/buttons is missing, so I can't stop phone turning on by pressing any button.
Also, I know you save loads of memory by using white backdrop (as phone is always on in background etc), but is it possible to make it black or grey backdrop without loosing memory?
thingonaspring

>Black backdrop
>
Sadly the setting for today/phone backdrop colour resides in the SysColor blob in the registry. The setting from today/phone backdrop also changes the backdrop for all windows, notifications and the colour of the Phone's signal strength bar on the taskbar.
When you set this to black, every window on the device is unreadable (black text on black background), plus you can't see the signal strength (black bars on black background). It is of course possible to fix part of this by setting text colours to white, but even then most applications are coded to expect a white background and black text, so any custom window layouts are usually unreadable (e.g. TaskManager ends up with white text on a light grey background).
After a long plane ride fiddling with the settings myself, I couldn't come up with anything workable, but if someone more talented can come up with a SysColor setting that leaves windows legible and allows a non-white background colour, I'd be happy to incorporate it.

Hello Thingonaspring,
I could say that it is really a good rom in term of performance and battery life, extreme last even in with wifi in used. :)
I would love to re-build your rom for personal use, but don't know how to do it with your kitchen,
Can you please provide a guide on this matter,
Thanks a lot,

Right - quick recap on lots of feedback - keep it coming!
- Buttonsetting page - added extended buttonsettings to v1.1.
- Phonesetting pages - I can't find anything wrong with it, what was the problem again?
- Ringtone changing - you can change ringtones in file explorer as normal "set as ringtone", but only WAV is supported. Having MP3 ringtones will require reinstating large amounts of Windows Media Player junk. Unless someone knows of a windowless standalone MP3player exe/dll?
- AdvancedConfig - it's not included in the ROM as you'll only ever run it once or twice to set things up how you like them. So just install it, make any changes, then uninstall it.
- File system caching disabled - As far as I can tell, this is a bug in advancedconfig. It believes the old "CacheSize" value, over the updated (WM5+) "FATCacheSize" and "DataCacheSize" settings. I've no idea why so many people persist in using the old registry settings, when the MSDN pages have listed "CacheSize" as legacy for several years now.
- Flash disk - I have this working in v1.1 - 28MB of it.
- WMVFile playback - can't reproduce the error - every WMV I've tried works fine.
Other stuff in v1.1 - to be released sometime this week.
- WM5torage updated to v1.9, I was using a very old 1.5
- PocketRAR updated to 3.9b3
- More junk removed (Office manifest files, more certificates, a couple of unused DLLs)
- Additional root certificate added (some sites failed CA check on v1)
- Attempted a fix to bluetooth audio gateway. Untested as yet, will try my Jabra 320s tonight.
Kitchen Problems
The kitchen should be unpacked as C:\uni_21051.
In this location all paths and settings will just work, no need to browse around for files.
You will need .NET 2.0 or better installed to run BuildOS.

Thanks for drawing our attention to this. It's persisted because it's used in AdvancedConfig - even v3.3. I don't know why Julien uses it if redundant from CE 5.0.
Anyway, we simple peop's didn't know any better. Perhaps it's time to re-look at Advanced Config.
thingonaspring
16th June 2009, 05:43 PM
Hehe, by no means did I intend to beat up AdvancedConfig or its author - that tool rocks.
Until MS get a bit clearer on how their registry settings work, we're all guessing to some extent.
More progress on 1.1 - extended rom and flash disk are now exposed as disks and working nicely. IE now stores cache/cookies/history on flash disk by default.
Removed the strange skin from psshutXP, cleaned out some more junk, checked and fixed some file associations and tidied up the "Set as ringtone" context menu settings. Now WAV, WMA, and MIDI files are all tested as working ringtone formats.
[edit] - fingerkeyboard. I've found an OEM for it here that should integrate with the kitchen nicely.
http://www.ppckitchen.org/forums/local_links.php?catid=1&sort=N&pp=10
It's a bit big and heavy to make it part of the main ROM though, I'm trying to keep it as "Sub-Vanilla" as possible.
Anyone spotted an OEM for fingermenu?
-Jonny-
16th June 2009, 06:01 PM
thing, I think your comments are positive and helpful.. and I'm sure Julien would regard feedback and changes on AdvanceConfig - he's made a tool that we can all add to and change very easily. It would be a mighty task for anyone to keep up with MSDEV and their changes, redundancies etc!
I'm looking into creating an xml for AdvanceConfig for our Uni's. Does anyone know of an 'alive' thread for AdvanceConfig?

Is it possible to create a simple jpeg image for the backdrop? Or does this incorporate switching too much back in to the ROM?

did you add any new files/apps to the ROM?
Does this file belong to one of those apps?
Did you delete that file when removing some apps? maybe there is a link to it some wehre that calls the file during the build process (I don't remember well because I don't "cook" since Thing's last kitchen but look for *.rgu and initflashfiles)

Hiya,
I've been quiet today, had lots of work to do, but time for a quick update at the end of the day.
Last night I had a horrible problem, my attempts at adding a flash disk (unsing VInt's flash disk kit) had corrupted the partition table on both my day-to-day Uni and the one I use for testing. The result was a pair of unbootable unis that refused to reflash :-(
The solution was to use MTTY and issue command "task 28 55aa" (totally clear and repartition flash rom) followed by "task 0" (reboot). A reflash from the bootloader then had everything working again.
The work-in-progress v1.1 does not use the same flash disk method as VInt described. Instead it relies on the Uni generating the partition table and formatting partitions on boot. Much simpler and safer and I've had no problem with this approach so far.
Bluetooth - With v1.0 I see the same problems everyone else does - no audio in headset mode and wonky connections to the Uni.
I seem to have this fixed in v1.1. My Jabra BT320s will work as a headset and A2DP. This has not happened before even with official WM5 ROMs, so I'm pretty pleased.
I won't promise faultless a2dp operation though, it'll be as weird and quirky as it is on most ROMs.
WMA9 - can you link to the DLL you installed to fix the error? I'll add it to the ROM, and probably remove some of the sillier codecs to make space for it. Anyone using speex? smartlyric? wavpack? They seem pretty obscure and unnecessary to me.
I'll run some more tests tonight and if I don't find any nasties, I'll release the ROM+kitchen tomorrow.
Cheers,
Thing

I think these can safely be removed. I expect a minority may use them, and they can always add them back in. You could most probably get rid of Atari (asap.plg), Matroska (matroska.plg) and maybe the Ogg-Vorbis (vorbishq.plg, vorbislq.plg) and Musepack (mpc.plg). Remove lang_sls.txt along with smart_lyric.plg.
I've attached the wma/wmv decoders. Here's what values I had used:
WMA_0200=wmadecoder.dll
WMA_0201=wma9Prodecoder.dll
WMV_0200=wmvdecoder.dll
WMV_0201=wmv9decoder.dll
WMAV0200=wmavdecoder.dll
WMAV0201=wma9Prodecoder.dll
WMVA0200=wmv9decoder.dll
WMVA0201=wmv9decoder.dll
WMS_0200=wmsdmod.dll
WMS_0201=wmv9decoder.dll
However, I still have not managed to get WMA9Pro working.
There was a more compatible (with WM6.1) recompile of TCPMP found here, which may be of more use. I'll continue to play and see what I can do.
TCPMP v0.72RC1 for WM6.1 (thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=380387)|download (http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=88539&d=1211902452))

Hi All,
@Jonny - thanks for those links, saved me a lot of effort.
Seems most people prefer TCPMP 0.72, so I'll use that and get the best Windows media support I can for it.
On the subject of WKTask - I've used FDCTaskswitcher deliberately as it does not reside in memory and use resources. When you press the "light" button it launches. When you've finished using it, it exits, freeing all resources. WKTask would use memory and CPU at all times. Obviously if you have a huge preference for WKTask, you can always use the kitchen to replace taskswitcher.
I'm readying the release just now, so once I have tcpmp working, it'll be uploaded.
One thing - A2DP works, but is not great with my jabra bt320s. This particular headset has never worked properly for wireless stereo on any Uni ROM, so testing A2DP for me is very difficult. I'd be interested to hear what experiences other people have with A2DP, but do bear in mind that I'll have a difficult time reproducing bug reports.
Using the Jabra as a wireless headset seems to work fine, which again is a rare occurrence with this device, so I'm confident it should be OK for others.
[edit] - uuuurgh. TCPMP 0.72-recomp does not modularise well (some DLLs won't modularise, and others are extremely crashy). When flashed to the ROM as files, it benchmarks about 10-20% lower than my 0.81 build on all codecs and crashes on FLVs a lot. WMV's work though, which is nice - I'll try to incorporate some of that into 0.81 I think.

Ok, you could try also attached versions. I'm sorry I haven't had time to try them yet. Again, I'll have a play in due course!!
In the recomp, all files and plg's were different.
In these attachments, only the common.dll, interface.plg and player.exe differ (except for ffmpeg.plgand splitter.plg in GF5500Edition-Alpha4.1)

Hi Jonny,
That is a weird problem you're having. I've used the kitchen under both XP and Win 7 without problems. I'd be surprised if Win7 was significantly different to Vista in how it deals wirth \\ in paths, but I suppose stranger things have happened.
As a possible line of inquiry - have you tried extracting the archive using a different tool? I'd be interested to see if unpacking it with 7Zip or WinRAR made a difference.

Hi Thing
Thank you very much for your hard work,
Huge ram, good flash disk size and so on. :-)
Regarding the new rom, i have some problems :-(:
1. When I install new Vietnamese unicode font (tahoma which is often done with any other rom), the ppc still cannot display the right Vietnamese characters as usual. Then, I cannot remove this font from the Windows mobile.
2. When open the message (email or sms in individual mode), it always displays the middle of the message, not the beginning as normal.
Please look at this issue when you have time
Thank you and regards

Just noticed your question about activesync launching on boot.
Yes activesync eats quite a lot of ram, even when it's not doing anything.
To stop it launching on boot, perform at least one sync, then disconnect from USB/wifi/3g or whatever other sync method you were using.
Now run activesync from "programs". Select "schedule" and set it both drop-down boxes to "manual". When you reboot, activesync will not launch until you connect the USB cable or manually perform a sync over wifi/3g.

Had been a fan of your ROMs for some time (well, from way back):p
Great ROM generally, with lots of free memory, like the clean look. SRS_WOW, 16Gb SD, connections worked without a glitch, but V1.1 had proven to be somewhat more problematic than the Beta - couldn't get quite a few things to work properly - TCPMP, Voice Command and Pocket Player to name a few. TCPMP 0.81 has a tendency to turn portrait on me and kept the wrong screen orientation even when closed, closing and opening the screen fixed it, but didn't matter much, because codecs are still wrong and all I could get was sound.
The XPDF reader could read 1 file out of nearly 100 and even then the rendering was way off no matter what I did, could be my conversion... so had to resort to Diamond PDF eventually. Old MSN might be good for some, but I prefer my WLM - thanks for the trip down memory lane though, hehe.
Will try my luck with kitchen once it downloads.
:D I guess my perfect ROM would lose PIE, WMP, external GPS, Remote Desktop, Task Switcher, One Note and other 'candy' and gain Advanced Config, Opera9.5 (9.7 has proven to be a memory hog), Reg Editor, Voice Command and Pocket Player (because it's great and sends my audio to mono bluetooth headset) :D

Hi! Thingsonspring,
I faced a strange problem when flashed the ROM. I was using Tomal's ROM ver 8.9 on my SPV M5000 with 128MB RAM. After a successful flashing the ROM, I restored my text messages and contact details using PIMSBackup. The things were smooth. I installed TouchFlo3d just to test and after a successful install, rebooted the phone. That was the end of it. Despite soft and hard resets, the phone did not turned on.
I tried to reflash with other cooked versions of Tomal and even tried to flash the phone with the original Orange WM5. Nothing went successful. Then I thought of DOC Formatting my phone, and then reinstalled Orange WM5 and then reflashed it with the Tomal Ver.8.2. The phone is operative now.
I just wanted to know, what actually went wrong.

The same think occurs also on my G4 Uni with 64MB RAM.
But :
1) this is not the only ROM this issue occurs. Also in UNI 5.2.20931 G3/G4 FINAL VERSION by VNInt /w WinXP theme same think happens
2) funny think is that UP TO THE LASTEST BETA of Thing's ROM the issue was not existant (May be memory leak + flash rom ???)

Hi Thing,
A question or two if I may :-)...
I have been reading about your 6.1 v2.xx. I am interested in trying to flash my uni. But does your ROM support the scandinavian alfabet? Second question is: you removed media player. I use G-Alarm, and from what I understood, G-Alarm uses Media player. Is that correct? Any suggestions on if this will have any impact on G-Alarm?
