Step 1. drop Flash.img to 1. Drop Flash.img.cmd
Step 2. run 2. PKTool.cmd
Step 3. remove for example all other Language Files and TelmapNav.exe do not remove German 0407 and English 0409 Files

The Beta3 has the same problem. you cant change any settings.
It seems, that this problem apears while generating the image file.
maybe the problem is caused by the tools.
I think the easies way is to use Beta2 and to copy the missing files to the VDA.
I'll post the missing files today.

Guys, I downloaded the archive from the first thread (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=3RNNHGD5) and there are a lot of tools in.
I am wondering whether there is a tool or other method to first extract and safe the existing ROM in an safe place in order to go back one step in case something goes wrong with the WM6.1 ROM update?
Can anybody please help and guide me through the - most likely only a few - steps on how to extract my existing ROM first?
Many thanks in advance.

I Think neither in the first archive nor somwere else was a tool to save the existing rom from your VDA. The tool from the first archive are just to modify a standard rom to fit to a special device like the vda.

Teac, thanks for the answer.
I got asked by people in this forum whether I could provide my original ROM, because they have a flashed non-functional 6.1 update. I always needed to deny those requests, because I have no idea on how to get the ROM of the VDA down from the device.
I think it's a good idea to safe the original shipped ROM in a safe place - in case of issues with the unit when I need to address to the carrier...
Any idea which tools I need to extract an image to HDD or so?

Please help me to flash this VDA GPS.
I've tried it many times with Movex, but no result, I always get an error message about failed connection.
Please let me know
1. Should I kill activesync process on my PC or it's enough just to switch off USB connection in connection properties?
2. Should I connect USB cable to my VDA deviece when it switched off or when it was completly started?
3. Should I disable or enable "advanced network functionalty" in USB properties on my VDA device?
4. Is there any hidden trick how to switch this VDA GPS device to flash mode (for example it was possible with my old HP hx4700)
I've tried it on 2 Windows XP pcs with 2 different USB cables and in different ports... always no connection, I think I do something wrong.

First you have to press the camera + the powerbutton at the same time to get the vda in download mode. after this start movex and connect usb cable and it should work.
maybe you have to do this in a diffenrent order, in my case i had to try several times.
its enough to disable usb connection in active sync and it is necesary to do it.

1. Did you remove the vodafone branding using registry keys? if yes - which registry editor did you use?
2. how comfortable is Route66 software, did you install additional helpers such as sphelper?

Hi Matvei,
1. The startuplogo could be changed wit a registry hack: can't find the link at the moment. maybe google may help you in this point. the only branding is the startuplogo.
2. im using garmin xt works perfect. route66 should work as well
3. First of all, which Rom have you taken? In the beta2 you should be able to change the skin as you did it in WM 6.0. if you can't change the theme or any other settings, you have maybe taken the wrong rom.

I think I took the right one (together with all other stuff as movex etc)
the file is 49*084*811 bytes, flash.img.NEW.IMG
Actually I can switch the skin, but after that when I go to Today's screen it tries to implement the new one and tells me that it's not possible (I can scrol the white message).
Anyway, for Route 66 it is necessary to edit config file and set
COM3 as a port with 9600 baud rate

Yes, I saw it too, actually I could start Navitel, for example, Detonator should work also (for some apps you probably have to configure OM port manually, setting it to COM3), the only problem is that these programs made for devices with touch screen, you may install sphelper, for example, and try to use them, but in my opinion it's not really comfortable.
Anyway: sphelper is a nice thing, but with 2 problems
- it locks 8 and 0 buttons (so you can not type tel. number with these digits until this app is running)
- it moves the cursor EXTREMELY slow using trackball (probably you may configure that, but I did not realize, how)

1. If anyone has access to Amoi programs so there should be at least a chance to get this firmware. I've asked a person at another forum and he confirmed me that he has a russian G710, so it looks like it's not fake.
2. everyone who speaks russian, not everybody in the world speaks english fluently. I'd recommend this device to a couple of my friends as a budget gadget with GPS module.
3. that's why I'm asking here about this ROM.
4. Nothing, I've installed it and the device works really well, I just have a doubt that I really need, for example, Turkish language there :)

I have used your ROM (TEAC's ROM did not work for me - boot failure) and added the "mising files" from TEAC as well as my SDHC driver (see signature), which done the job brilliantly.

I am facing my first issue :(
While creating a new network connection I am not able to specify the DNS server due to the fact that I cannot type a period (.) between the numbers.
It seems that the function key is automatically pressed for all entries, due to the fact that nnumbers are expected!
I helped myself to create a dummy connection and later editing showed that WM created 0.0.0.0. as IP address. I left the periods for editing.
Other strange keyboard behavior ist that backspace does not count for the character left to the cursor, but to the right?! Whew! Once you know, one ca life with...

Hi Guys,
at first sorry for my bad english, hope you'll understand me...
I am reading in this Thread for e few Days. I have started also many tries to update my VDA, but without success. Download Mode is running on Device but on every computer i tried ist the "Unknown Device" Error. 2 Desktops, 3 Notebooks. 4 different cables also tested. One of the cables was the original on shipped with the phone.
for the theory of different versions i am posting now my Version Numbers:
Software Version:
VDA GPS-R10-080215-NEPTUNE
Hardware Version:
VDA GPS_1.4
These Infos can be found when the LIST.EXE in the Windows Folder is started.
In the Movex Utility there is an GET Button. When I am clicking this one an "Save as" Dialog appears. Is this Button for backup the current ROM before updating the phone?
Sorry for this stupid questions but i have found no guide for this Movex Utility.
Hope someone can help me to get running this update

I am about to flash another ROM and I just had a look to the ROM itself and analyzed some code sniplets.
It seems that you cannot really go wrong with the ROM images, due to the fact that appropriate HW revision is given inside the ROM to prevent mismatch flashing desired smartphones. At least the ROM's I analysed always refer to the HW platform "GSM6711A_1.4". This should give us some kind of security while flashing...
Also, the developpers where using a "Windows Mobile 5.0 Smartphone SDK (ARMV4IU0)". For whatever that means...
Interestingly, the WM 6.1 ROM has been exclusively prepared for Vodafone as referred to as "AMOI_6711_FOR_VODAFONE", although Vodafone until never announced a ROM Update.
At the end of the ROM are some carrier specific Vodafone live entries.
Finally, I believe one could find leaked ROM eventually from other carriers as well, because many carriers are mentioned witin the ROM, such as Oraneg France, Vodafone UK, Scandinavian as well as Eastern European Carriers.
Things are getting a bit more interesting now...

in general it's highly NOT RECOMMENDED to do that, the reason is: different version of WM may have additional changes in registry, libraries, etc. If you use your old backup - everything will be restored, but under new version of WM, hence you'll probably get a lot of additional troubles. If not - you're lucky, but I'd never do it in such a way.

I've got these messages (unknown USB device) many times. It seems like this VDA GPS device is very critical to USB cables, I could flash it with only one short (and dick) cable. Whew, it seems that I am not really able to express myself properly...
Well, of yourse I am talking about different ROM version of the Neptune ROM (Windows Mobile 6.1) and not any other Windows Mobile version...
Apart froeven while restoring an inappropriate backup it only goes into RAM und thus can easlily be solved by hardresetting the device and restoring the original ROM into RAM again.
The most significant role plays the ROM update, because this could go wrong and then your boot loader is destroyed...

Ok, guys, I think I figured out how to flash the ROM properly with MoVex.
(A) connect the G710 (VDA GPS) by an appropriate USB cable to the PC
(B) Press [Camera] + [POWER] on the G710 (VDA GPS) in order to go into download mode (the device is now ready to receive ROM updates)
(C) Windows registeres the device as properly connected USB device
(D) Start the flshing tool "Movex.exe"
(E) Press [GET] and specify any name such as "test" or so and press [ENTER]
(F) repeat (E) 1 - 3 times
(G) press [Browse] and select the ROM you want to flash into the G710 (VDA GPS)
(H) Movex immediately starts scanning the USB ports, finds the device and begins flashing within max. of 3 seconds. Flashing takes no longer than 2 minutes.
(I) The device will be automatically shutdown
(J) restart the device
(K) check whether or not you can access the Settings: Start Settings and press the keys 1 and 6 to read the network settings. If this is successful, the ROM is good.
Good ROMs:
(01) Teac's beta2-ROM (http://tr.im/ree8) (incl. accessories)
(02) Ninjacul's ROM (http://tr.im/reeV)
Bad ROMs:
(01) Teac's beta3-ROM (http://tr.im/rehI)
(02) Powerbyte's Initial ROM (http://tr.im/rehc) (non-functional trackball)

Thanks a lot for your help

Morny,
I have verified another thing, which kept me away from sleeping.
I successfully swapped ROM's under an existing mix of installations.
Thus, I can confirm that swapping of different WM6.1 ROMs work in cause you want to just try them out, but keep your programs still productive.
I used Sprite Backup (http://tr.im/rm6O) for the test run.
Of course, you shouldn't try this between various OS versions, such as WM5.0, WM6.0 and WM6.1.

I guess, this is a really good question :)
But at this stage all alternative ROMs are leaked Amoi ROMs and thus Amoi never made WLAN public in their devices...
I guess it never had been asked for by their customers (Toshiba and Vodafone for instance). It could be that it is disabled by SW but physically present on the PCB. Then, you need to figure out the chipset as well as find drivers...
This would be a hard way to go...but interesting though.

Hi,
Here's my opinion on flashing the VDA GPS: don't do it until there is a dump of the official firmware, unless you don't mind the consequences:
1) In case of a defect, warranty will be voided unless you reflash the offical firmware.
2) If you don't like the new firmware, you can't go back.
3) If any functionality you need is not working with the new firmware, you can't go back.
Also, bear in mind, that visual enhancements can in most cases be obtained by manipulating the home screen, which is basically a HTML page with embedded add-ons. You can use your own and format the page at your desire.
Unless the WM6.1 has a special functionality that WM6.0 doesn't have, why touch a running system? In a previous post of mine, I explained how to remove most customisations.
Of course, I give all credit for the kitchen and the available firmware. This is just an alert, as I know how it works: we get so excited with the new firmware being around, that we only start to think about what we have done afterwards, when the device is not working as before...
Cheers,
vma

I see it the same. If there are no realy improvements u need, u should be shure about the consequnts.
There is still one thing i'm wondering about... why is in the WM 6.1 still the Vodafone branding? There are four possibilities:
1. It's an official Vod. Rom ?
2. It's an general WM 6.1 Rom with all files and reg of 6.0
3. It's the Rus rom with europ. Lang files
4. It's an 6.0 rom that has the look and feel of an 6.1 (Why you are not been ask whether the VDA should be an Mobile phone or a storage device when you connect it to pc as its normal with other 6.1 devices?)
what do you think? i think, thats strange

Hello,
i see it the same way. The Reason for me to upgrade rom ist the threaded sms function (IM Style). Sure, for the most people it is not so important, but i like it, and i want it.
Also the improved possibility to paste and copy text is interesting for me.
Can anybody confirm this functions in the roms that we are talking about?
Anyway, when somebody has an idea how i cantake a ROM dump from the Original Firmware i will do it for you. Just to see how it works.

P.S.: I've had just a look for this post, but didn't find something. Only the Post where you get no answer.
I dont need the vodafone Navigator or the Microsoft Office...

This is not only a WM6 ROM with some new homescreens!
There are many improvements under the hood I see while working with it.
I guess it is a leaked pre-release of the Vodafone ROM, because it had been announced by Vodafone end of 2008 to provide an update to WM6.1 (http://www.vodafone.de/infofaxe/467.pdf) (German document, page 2 under "System Requirements") which never had been provided so far.
I love the new version and everything indicates that it is no pimped WM6 release.
I have no real explanation to the fact that it does not mount as USB mass storage device, though the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 does not as well. You need ta particular SW tool to mount it as mass storage device! I did it with WM5Torage (http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-wm5torage-v1-8.html). So, this is no real explanation for the fact that it should not be a new WM version.
But I do not use WM5torage for the G710, because one can access the SD card easily by Active Sync navigating to the Storage Card...
In addition, threaded SMS can be realised right under WM 6 with additional SW. Everything is SW related, but the core functions of the OS are importatnt to have some great improvements. I realised longer standby times, better radio configuration, easier usage and an all in all better user experience with the new release. I am happy though.
And, once this has been oficially released by Vodafon, I simply flash the device again and *boom* I am back to normal.
In case, somebody is able to conserve the old Vodafone ROM I am putting this aside for some reason, but you are not doing something wrong with the new ROM.
It has improved my daily life with the device a lot. I can recommend this ROM update to anybody. The keyboard now is much more responsive, the device is got a lot faster, standby times improved, etc. etc.... It's easy and good working...

Hello tuo_kaerf,
thanks for this impressions. i know its a little bit offtopic, but i have had always problems with threaded smsm software from third party vendors. no starting of this app automaticly after reboot, double or missed messages and so on. On an other phone i had WM6.1 and have seen that it works perfectly...
Anyway i will try more cable/computers. Now i counted 7 PCs annd 12 cables, but still this unknown device error. I also can not realise that a cable can be the real reason. just 4 pins, and all on the right place, because in other way i cant be able to synch the device...it is a miracle to me.
Hope I'll get it sometime.

I can't underline enough how blazingly fast the new ROM version is and thus it might be of some relevance for one or the other to have the device always being connected to the net:
I believe the 710/VDA/6711 makes a perfect chat board, web companion, twitter and facebook client...so why not being connected all the time?!
I posted some registry adjustements here (http://tr.im/rzjk) on how to enable a desired GPRS/EDGE connection right after booting the device and how to keep it permanently alive. Remember that the 710/VDA/6711 does not initiate an internet conenction by itself and close it after a certain period of time...

I got confirmation that the Amoi 6711 reference design (and thus Toshiba G710, Vodafone VDA GPS, AT&T SMT5600,) has definetively no WLAN (802.11bg) on the PCB board, 2G and BT only.
the same Amoi 6711 I have too...on him is written SPV e610. I tried what you explain you here boys, but I can get the Amoi 6711 in download mode and probabaly that's why I always get the message on Downloading the image created after these explanations here on the topic, "device connection failed"
My phone is locked on Orange UK. What you explained here can help me in making my phone work in others networks?

I'm wonder if someone can post "the missing file" again. The file on rapidshare reached its limit so I can download no more.
I've just flashed my G710 with the ninjacul's ROM. It's great, but without any ringtone.

I tried pulling out the main PC power cord.
the only step on the windows XP PC is to disable usb connection in active sync.
then do the steps as told on the phone.
after that the phone should be in download mode like on the pic.
when phone is in download mode connect via usbcable to pc. when recognized as Windows CE USB Device you can start movex.
choose image and click send.
you need more than one try. i have done this procedure 24 times but than image was uploaded to phone.
so it worked for me.

1. remove battery
2. end Active Sync and close wcescomm an taskmanager
3. connect usb cable and putting back battery

my sms problem is solved, guess it was a problem in the operators network.
but like the other friends i also have the 0001.txt....0009.txt files in the system folder. dont know how to disable it.
some of the .txt-files are over 15Mb..gues it slows down the VDA a bit.

Hi to all ,,,
I'm new in this area and i have a G710 that was locked to Optimus !!! I'd like to edit phones REGISTER !!! Tryed to install some applications to do the job like: PHM Registry Editor and Total Commander ,,, but the phone tells me the CAB i'm trying to install is NOT for this device !!!! I've downloaded the versions that support the ARM processor !!! So i don't know what can this be ?!? Does anyone have any idea ?!?
Another thing: Does any of you know any of these ROM's presented here with Portuguese language included ?!?
Many thanks in advance,

Hello livinghost,
this device is a SMARTPHONE, no PocketPC!
ARM Processors are used in both kind of devices.
for totalcommander look on homepage for smartphone version (with NO Touchscreen). This will work.
If thats not the Problem google for SDA Application Unlock. This Tool helped me with problem during Install of birdiesync...

Thank you so very much for your TIP !!!! That was realy it ...
Now that i have FULL access to the phones Registry, i've tryed to apply a method described here in the Forum by a member called "vma", to disable a library (DLL) that loads the Operator LOGO Images at Startup and Shutdown. And he says:
Here it goes: custom bootscreen!
1) Delete the key in [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\Startup\1]. This will stop using Amoi's DLL to generate the lame Vodafone animation. Windows Mobile will now show the default carrier picture.
2) Edit a picture in PNG format and 320x240 size. You can copy the existing one (see next step) and use that as a start point in Windows Paint. Remember to check the resolution.
3) Rename it to "carrier_splash.png" and copy to \WINDOWS, overwriting the existing one.
You can proceed the same way for the shutdown picture: see the key \HKLM\SYSTEM\Shutdown\1 and use the carrier_shutdown.png.
Unfortunatly i was NOT succeeded !!! Those Keys do NOT exist in my phones Registry !!! But i think i know why: My phone has WM6 installed !!! And this method is for a WM6.1 ROM !!!
I can NOT install this WM6.1 ROM because it doesn't have Portuguese language !!! So i was wondering if anyone can point me the key that i have to REMOVE that loads this tsupid libraby i've mentioned !!!
Please, i'm tyred to look in the Registry, but can't find anything !!!!!
Many thanks in advance for your time,
Best regards to a:)ll

looking like this :

the files are named :
0001.txt, 0002.txt, 0003.txt , etc ..
every time i restart my vda i get a new file.
as much as i know those files are from the radio interface layer (RIL)
debug log.
is it possible to turn off the logging of this driver?
------
are there any known issues regarding the storage card ?
im using a 8GB card (only 3.xx are usable) but sometimes it looks like
the card ist unreadable . when i open it with filemanager i got
some strange filenames or the dirs are emty.
when i restart the vda all is accessible and works.
------
another problem ive got is that the speakers make a strange noise
when someone is calling me. ill hear the ringtone and when i take
the call i head a loud noise and my caller does not hear me.
when i hang up and the caller calls again it works.
looks like the device has some problems in "sleep mode" ..
hope you can give me some info

Hi Arthur,
Although I have found some entries in the registry that belong to the RIL and also the source for the "next file name for log file", I havent found a way to configure it this way that disables logging.
So I have no solution to switch logging off permanently but I use this workaround:
I have created a dozen of directories with the names of those next log files that would be created on the next startups:
0001.txt, 0002.txt, 0003.txt , etc ..
That stops logging for that amount of reboots as directories exist.
BTW: I also have that problem with the loud spekear at the beginning of a phone call, but I dont think that can be solved

Guys guys,
i think there are several VERY important issues about the VDA GPS/g710 device that were already pointed out, however noone gave a solution or at least a starting point.
The G710 is primary a phone, it should be able to perform phone tasks such as making calls. Hence, the loud noise at the beginning of a call (as pointed out by ArthurDent-RL and stef_seidler) as well as the bad earspeaker quality (as reported by fbliyiz, delk and moonman272 post #133-#135) are a real deal breaker.
As you can guess, i'm having the same problems. Additionally - a much worse reception than my other phones: Sony Ericsson P800, HTC Touch Pro, QTEK S200.
That was with the original Vodafone ROM, as well it is now with the TEAC ROM. It sure is very nice having a new user interface, but this does not make the phone usable, since it is pretty damn bad at making calls. The loudspeaker is kinda nice, but i don't want everyone in 10 feet radius overhearing my calls :-/. The in-ear-phones are even worse than the phone ear-speaker itself.
Can anyone PLEASE share if they have the same problems and eventually post a working solution?
Huge thanks in advance!
The Fat man
