Not to be rude, but the modding is getting a bit overzealous because I know alot of posters DON'T do their research, but my thread was closed and my question was NOT answered by the search engines or this:

these were both done already, do your reasearch. for bluetooth there is a program called tetherblu, and netshare made their program for android, via USB

Would it be possible to create a program that can create a wifi access point with a connection shared from a PC connected by USB or bluetooth? I would like a portable device that I can connect to other PCs in homes that don't have a wifi router, so I can use my laptop wirelessly.

In other words, I connect my phone by USB to a Windows PC that already has a DSL or Cable internet connection, and it becomes a tiny, portable wireless router for my Laptop. I don't need a wifi tether program, there are already plenty of those out there. Thanks in advance

I will send you a wireless router if you stop posting this.

How is this a development question???

It's prolly possible with a shell script. You'd need to find the shell commands for setting up an adhoc network, bluetooth networking, and routing. Iptables handles routing and installing wifi tether for root users will make it easy to install iptables. I don't know much about bluetooth so you're on your on that. Check the wifitether thread to find the commands for routing and opening an ad hoc connection.

From what I understand, all questions now go in General. Only threads where you actually have some tangible development (a new cooked build, new tool, new hack, remix of existing work) are not modded.

Edit: in the interest of preventing you from making any further inquiries, i'll point you to PdaNet for Android, which will let you tether over USB. In addition you'll also want to find some kind of SoftAP program which will let your notebook use its wifi card as an AP. There are many software packages out there that do this, some free and some not. Google it.

Don't you think this should be posted in the Applications or General section? Not sure why this wasnt figured out the first time....so now you create another thread in the wrong place.

Please let me know where I can buy a wireless router the size of my phone for 100$ or less and I will :P

As for tangible development, if something like this doesn't exist and noone else wants to take it on, I may code it myself, hence the original question.

It is possible to accomplish from a phone side but would require changes on the PC side so your goal is not directly achievable.

Setting up an adhoc wireless network is well covered on the forums. Once that is established you can create a connection to the PC using USB or Bluetooth but therein lies your first problem. To route through USB the host computer would need the ADB tools. Based on this your goal of hooking up to an arbitrary computer is not practical. Bluetooth networking is a little more approachable in that you do not have to install any software on the computer but the computer itself would need bluetooth and said bluetooth would need to be paired and then configured for networking. Again not a "plug and play" solution.

Once you had the wireless running and PC connections established then it is a simple matter of executing an iptables script to route traffic from the ad-hoc wireless to the PC connection. Then comes problem 2. So you are now communicating to the PC, but you will need to set up the PC to route traffic from the phone connection to the broadband connection. Another thing that will need to be done on the PC.

So there is no low footprint solution to do what you are asking since there are multiple steps that would need to be done on the PC to establish then route the connection. It can be done but it is far more practical to carry a small dedicated WAP with you such as the D-Link G730AP.

EDIT: One correction. In the 2.6.27 kernel for Android they did add USB Gadget drivers. I have not confirmed that they are there and functional but at least in theory you could use those to make the G1 appear to be a USB ethernet connection. You would still need to set up the routing on the PC but you would not need to install the ADB tools.

EDIT2: nope. You would still need USB Networking support whcih would need to be built. Googling around I see some talk about porting Open Moko USB networking support but not any actual results.

dude this is the devlopment forum for dream rom creation and emulation not the post what ever app, problem, non search, non read other forums or threads section. look if you want an app for what you want to do create it. stop bugging the devs cause you can't do it yourself.

oh and another thing this is the rom section not the app section
