Check out this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=548218) thread in case you have a perfected SPL (fastboot remote: not allow).

Proceed on your own risk, you might brick your phone!!!

The following SPLs "should" work on PVT 32A and PVT 32B boards :

How to flash :
Skip step 2 and boot into recovery mode instead of step 3, if you already have a custom recovery flashed!

Download the SPL of your choice and copy it to the root of your SD-card.
Download the appropriate recovery here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=530492)
Boot in fastboot mode
fastboot boot recovery-RAv1.2.0.G.img or fastboot boot recovery-RAv1.2.0.H.img
Wait a while
Choose Apply sdcard:choose zip and select the required SPL update
Press the GREEN key once the update is done
Press HOME + BACK to reboot

Just a guess (correct me if I'm wrong) :

- CPLD stands for "Complex programmable logic device" :
CPLD 10 : Ion + Vodafone
CPLD 11 : Vodafone?
CPLD 12 : HTC?
Does anyone know what the 10,11 and 12 mean?

- The H or G at the end identify if it's a Google or HTC SPL
- ENG means Engineering version
- SHIP means SHIPMENT version
- Not sure what S-off and S-on mean (Signature check on or off ?)

Concerning the boards :
PVT 32A : 288MB RAM / Qualcomm MSM7200a
PVT 32B : 192MB RAM / Qualcomm MSM7201a

You already have this SPL on your phone, I don't think there's a difference between 1.33.0009H and 1.3300.0009.

You should flash the Engineering SPL HBOOT-1.33.2005 if you want to flash different roms. If you want to run google's vanilla rom (like the ion) you should also flash the corresponding radio version... It can be risky since you don't have a backup of your radio/SPL.

lots of questions, but hopefully someone can answer them all! ;P

I don't think so, i already flash 1.3300.2005 from Haukuro and still can't flash

Oh, and did you try downgrading the radio to, someone hinted that this might be necessary.

Yes this will work, I tried this myself on the same configuration but for me the camera didn't work (I'll try to find a fix for this soon).
- You'll need to flash the Engineering SPL HBOOT-1.33.2005 or 2004
- The official update script will not complete because it will look for CPLD-10 and you have a CPLD-12. To solve this you can :
1. update the script yourself and resign the update.
2. or you can unzip the update files and flash all images manually (so bypassing the installationscript).
3. or you can run modded ion rom with fixed installscript and root access from here (http://andblogs.net/2009/05/ion-update-available/)

=> Don't forget to also flash the radio of the ION, otherwise you'll be stuck at the bootscreen.

I tried removing battery / holding back button - nothing works. It's all dead (gives the impression of a dead battery but even with AC connected it does nothing).

I guess "$ fastboot erase hboot" really bricks it when new image fails.

Hope someone knows a trick to get it do something at all

In case you are getting "remote: signature verify fail" :

# Download haykuro's SPL (http://sapphire-port-dream.googlecode.com/files/spl-signed.zip) and rename it to update.zip and copy it to your sdcard.
# Reboot into recovery mode via a rooted recovery image.
# Apply update.

This will only work then the hboot partition it not erased already by doing "$ fastboot erase hboot".
When this is done, it is not possible to turn off the phone, if you do that the the device won't boot anymore (and neither will the recovery console / fastboot).
I guess it's a bricked one then.

So if you're stuck at fastboot with an erased hboot, what do you do in order to push Haykuro's SPL to the SDcard?

In other words, is there any way what so ever to push a file to the SD card via fastboot?

I guess fastboot push update.zip /sdcard/update.zip wont do it.

What is your Magic brand? What I experience so far is that phone with HTC or PVT32A is not able to flash the same way as PVT32B. If you downgrade radio on PVT32A you will get bricked. The same way you flash wrong SPL. As daldroid and Haykuro mention that the boot process is different between "HTC" brand and "with Google" brand.

1. Download a modded recovery that uses test-keys (Haykuro or Daldroid or ...)

3. Copy update.zip to the root of your SD-card
4. Switch the Magic to fastboot mode

Just to let you know, the SPL labelled

"- HBOOT-1.33.0004 (SAPP10000) : Sapphire PVT 32B SHIP S-ON G : CPLD-10 (Dutch Vodafone)"

is also exactly the same for UK Vodafone. Thanks for creating a very useful thread.

=> Don't forget to also flash the radio of the ION, otherwise you'll be stuck at the bootscreen.

where can i find the radio of the ION, My device is

I found out today that I have done the same thing with my Magic.

I have the German Vodafone HTC Magic with the same board a PVT 32B, and I am running the Haykuro SPL, that is supposed to work with the 32A boards only, or that is at least according to this post. It works fine, phone boots everytime, flashing modified ROMs works fine, I guess everything works as supposed to. Could someone please enlighten us? :)

I'm not sure who the heads of the rom development are for the magic, as of now. What I am sure of is, there're a lot of brickings going on. I too bricked my magic after rooting, then trying to flash the spl. The problem with the whole process is, there's no start to finish guide for new users. There're bits and pieces of information here and there spread out across the forum, but no tutorial really states which is the beginning of the entire process.

I would love to go through all the different posts about bricked phones and try to find a common denominator, but I unfortunately don't know enough about the phone to start making assumptions. There are, however, users on here who know what they're doing.

We need a go to resource which lists the process for both the boards (a and b) which carry the magic name. It seems to me that following the process for one, when you should follow it for another, can easily end up in totally locking up your phone. (bricked right out of fastboot and all).

I'll start a thread on the main development page asking all those who've bricked their phones to give details as to which phone they have, and what point of modifying their phone, they got to bricking it. Perhaps we can find a common problem that is occurring. I can almost guarantee that these bricks are being made on account of the poor presentation of information in the forum.

Let's figure it out, and consolidate a better tutorial from start to finish, for all new users.

I'll be happy to help in any way that I can.

It will work on PVT 32B but 1.33.2005 is from HTC not from Google so it's actually not MADE for PVT 32A. There were some people reporting bricks when they tried to flash PVT 32B with 1.33.2005 that's why I updated the first post.

2. The 1.33.2004 spl for PVT32B is the same that the 1.33.2005 spl for the PVT 32B I have? I want to say if with it i could do nandroids backups, install anothers roms, etc... with it. This should be the SPL I should use in my PVT32B???

No it's not, 1.33.2004 is from Google (PVT 32B) boards, 1.33.2005 is from HTC (PVT 32A). See point 1 above, if 1.33.2005 is working for you just leave it and be happy you didn't brick your device :D

3. The Modded HBOOT-1.33.2004 by Crios is the same thar haykyro spl with only the version number modified in order to acces to OTA updates? or it has some other modification?

This is correct, Crios hex-edited 1.33.2005 to show 1.33.2004 so PVT 32B users could use this SPL to install Google branded updates which require a 1.33.2004 SPL.

4. Where can i download the original spl of my vodafone magic? (1.33.0004 (SAPP100.00) : Sapphire PVT 32B SHIP S-ON G : CPLD-10)

As soon as Vodafone releases an update with their SPL you can extract it and keep it as a backup. As far as I know there is none available at the moment.

A brick is when the SPL flash goes wrong and you can't get into fastboot mode anymore... This happens when :
- you erase your hboot and boot right after
- you flash an SPL not meant to run on your board
- something goes wrong while flashing the SPL

As long as you can get into fastboot you didn't brick your phone...

Hi,

I'm trying to understand everything well so that I don't brick my german vodafone magic. This procedure posted on the first page:

How to flash :
1. Download the appropriate recovery here, and rename it to update.zip.
2. Copy update.zip to the root of your SD-card
3. Switch the Magic to fastboot mode
4. $fastboot boot <moddedrecovery.img>
5. Apply the update

Is done after rooting or before? If it is after, why do we need this? I'm getting a bit confused about the procedure to root my Magic from:

http://android-dls.com/wiki/index.php?title=Magic_Rooting

I understand that I have to fast boot with adb (or turn on with volume down + power) and then do the update. What I don't understand is which update I have to use to root my Magic and which features depend on it (besides rooting of course).

Thanks.

Thanks.

Let me try to explain it as simple as possible :

To enable root you need set ro.secure=0 in the default.prop file which is located in the boot partition of your phone. You can't just update default.prop file because you don't have write rights (=you need root access for this). So we need root to get root... ;)

A logical solution would be to "dump" the boot partition, unpack the dumped image, update the default.prop file, repack the dumped image, sign the image and flash the image to the phone. Simple eh?

Unfortunately you can only sign the image with test-keys (because we don't have the google release-keys) and unfortunately most stock "recovery menu's" will not allow you to update a zipped package that is signed with test-keys. Crap...

So all we would need to do is to replace the recovery with one that will allow you to update a zipped package signed with test-keys, right?

Luckily the fastboot command allows you to boot any recovery image, even those allowing test-keys!

Some lucky people have the change to get a Magic equiped with a recovery that will allow zipped packages signed with test-keys by default :-)

This means they can dump the recovery image for you so you can fastboot it and be able to update zipped packages signed with test-keys! Yay!

So, these are the steps you need to take if you want to root your own device the manual way :

1. fastboot with the "special" recovery image allowing test-key signed packages.
2. update a test-key signed package that contains an engineerings SPL allowing you to make a dump of your boot partition. (=nandroid backup)
3. make a nandroid backup of your boot partition.
4. unpack the boot dump image, update the default.prop file, repack the boot image, sign the image with test-keys and pack it into an update package.
5. update the package containing the modified boot image.
6. boot
7. enjoy your root access

Hi Amon_RA,

Before you had posted you detailed explanation (thanks for that) I tried rooting my Magic acording to that know wiki page (I don't have the link right now). That involved using and update.zip as described which i assume that it contains the test keys you mention below.

After that, I tried fastbooting, launching the recovery imagem and applying the update.zip with a new rom. It seems to be working fine with the new image.

Anyway, I see that I haven't followed you proposed steps but I hope that I haven't permantely screwed up anything.

Well you do not necessarily have to flash it. But if you don't want to do it the fastboot way every time, you can safely flash it to the phone.

Mine shows that as well. The S-OFF is good...that means "security off" (See here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=529019).

Unless you are having problems don't worry about it...it looks exactly like mine does and mine works fine. The data flash should work now.

Is there posible to open the case and do hard wired to make it flash able?

Hum... I don't think anyone has done a hardware hack yet on the HTC Magic in order to crack the 1.33.0010 SPL :(

Maybe the best suggestion is to sell that phone and get a new one.

Hi,

I have a 32B that I bought and it had 1.33.2005 SPL on it from the last owner. I read here on this thread that this SPL should be for the 32A.

I have also noticed a pattern that any ROMs ported from the Dream will not run on my Magic although most other report success. I end up with a boot loop as the Android splash screen.

I have a sneaking suspicion that it may have something to do with my SPL? Does this sound plausible?

Is it safe to downgrade 1.33.2005 to 1.33.2004 on a 32A?

I get the verification failure when installing this ROM (No signature :( ). I read it has something to do with the wrong SPL update file. Which one should i use for a 32B device in order to mount this rom?
Thanks!

So question then.

Before starting this process (OP) does one need:

A proper 'spl'?
A proper 'radio'?
A rooted Magic?

It seems so...but there are so many docs all over but I still can't find one "stock Magic->Hero firmware".

I will shortly be getting a Rogers HTC Magic, so probably 32A and .009 SPL. I would like to go to the latest Hero 1.5 firmware that is considered 'fast'.

I just don't want to brick it so I am being paranoid. I hear the radio/SPL is the most common way to do so so I am trying to get all the steps I need to go through understood and written down in one place :)

Cheers

Read the Sapphire Wiki, you'll find that most likely, you will not need to flash any of these.

Spend a few days reading and watching this forum, and your questions will probably be answered.

Spend a few days reading and watching this forum, and your questions will probably be answered.

That was my impression as well from most of the tips, but then some threads talk about how you have to go to .005 SPL before doing anything. I've spent the last 3 days reading and reading.

eg: "No known Sapphire handset needs an updated SPL yet unless you want to flash a new boot image, splash screen or recovery rom to your handset - with the exception of the "Perfect SPL" Revisions listed below. Updating your SPL can be risky, so this has been listed in the Advanced section below. You do not need to update your SPL in order to install a complete ROM package"

However...everywhere I read says I should put a new recovery ROM on so that I can back up with nandroid.

The two most succinct seem to be:

http://www.karrderized.com/romguide/
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Sapphire_Hacking

Or perhaps the 'fastbooting not actually flashing' is the key that I am missing? If so, then what would be the point of actually flashing a ROM on as opposed to fastbooting?

Just don't want to brick it...and so much conflicting information out there.

Hello, I'm in the same confusion, I have a HBOOT-1.33.0004(SAPP10000) : Sapphire PVT 32B SHIP S-ON G : CPLD-10 (Sfr-vodafone France), and the latest radio (RADIO-2.22.19.26I).
I need to flash just a data.img from one of my backup to my phone, but fastboot indicates me there's a error in verification of the signatures...
It seems that error is due to the security ON of the spl, and the engineering spl doesn't have this security check, am I right?
So which SPL I have to pick? And what are the side effects ( I mean for the OTA updates, i read that engineering spl make the phone unable to support OTA anymore).

The 2004 or 2005 should work fine. If you have the radio ending in 26 you are good to go.

(..) And what are the side effects ( I mean for the OTA updates, i read that engineering spl make the phone unable to support OTA anymore).

Well if you want a Engineering SPL you also might want to try out the awesome and fast roms out there, so there is no reason to get OTA updates anyways.

I want a engineering spl because after trying everything, this is the only way to get back my data from a backup, the security on prevents me from just flashing a single .img (data.img) , not a complete rom :).
I just have read the crios's spl supports OTA, is it right?
Does it is compatible with Pvt 32B?
Thanks for you're answer for what version we have to pick :).

Check out this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=548218) thread in case you have a perfected SPL (fastboot remote: not allow).

Proceed on your own risk, you might brick your phone!!!

The following SPLs "should" work on PVT 32A and PVT 32B boards :

How to flash :
Skip step 2 and boot into recovery mode instead of step 3, if you already have a custom recovery flashed!

Download the SPL of your choice and copy it to the root of your SD-card.
Download the appropriate recovery here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=530492)
Boot in fastboot mode
fastboot boot recovery-RAv1.2.0.G.img or fastboot boot recovery-RAv1.2.0.H.img
Wait a while
Choose Apply sdcard:choose zip and select the required SPL update
Press the GREEN key once the update is done
Press HOME + BACK to reboot

I bricked my Magic doing this. I had to get another one.

This is the setup:

- Vodafone 32B with SPL 1.33.2004
- Flashed to Engineering SPL 1.33.2010

All care was exercised, but it killed the phone.
I have a feeling that if the original SPL is 1.33.2004, one should flash with the Enginnering SPL of the same number, is this correct? I flashed 1.33.2010 because I thought it was the 'latest version'. Instead, it killed the phone.

Perhaps this useful information to anyone. I for one am not going to try to put another SPL on at any point until there are more guarantees / safety options to prevent the bricking. Too many people with bricked phones after an SPL flash. There must be something that isn't know or communicated that's causing this.

It is for the phones that had the perfect SPL

So if my phone reads this:

SAPHIRE PVT 32B SHIP S-ON G

This HBOOT 1.33.2010 should work?

Edit: Do I have to follow this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=548218) procedure first to fix the perfected SPL? I'm assuming I do but just checking before I do something stupid

If I recall correctly, that warning is for the RA 1.2.1 32A ROM, not the recovery image (link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=538645). There are no such requirements to update the SPL, but be careful since it may brick your phone.

You need an engineering SPL to flash files signed with a test key (restore your nandroid backups for example). In order to install the engineering SPL you do need to boot into a recovery image, and apply the update.zip from there (or choose the zip file in Amon_RA's 1.2.1 recovery).

Just want to know this whether anyone has tried

Engineering SPL 1.33.2010 on HTC Magic 32A?

Because in the forum, some people bricked their phone easily. (e.g excepti0n)

Although it is said that

The following SPLs "should" work on PVT 32A and PVT 32B boards :

It would be great if somebody can write out clearly which SPL is for which handset.

Or we can follow how ROMs are labelled, this ROM is for 32B, that ROM is for 32A.

Another question is

MUST I flash the engineerings SPL first before flashing recovery image,RAv1.2.1H?

Best,
Thihaz

I tried the goldcard method, first time I got "incorrect cid" after flashing, so I switched to another card, following that I got "wrong image" after flashing. I assume there is no root availabe yet for that version?

edit: loading cyanogen via the one click root method worked just fine.

This is from a Danish H-branded Magic

I can confirm that the 2010 appeared to brick my phone, but I was able to get it up again by running fastboot boot myrecovery.img prior to booting the phone and then repeatedly trying different combinations of BACK+POWER and VolDown+HOME+POWER and such, finally it just made contact and booted RA's recovery.

To clarify, I couldn't get into either recovery or bootloader prior to this. From RA's recovery I flashed the 2009 SPL and it worked from then on out. Info now:

When you get these errors it means that your goldcard isn't created properly.
The one click method does NOT fix the SPL so you will still have a perfected SPL that is unable to fastboot!

On the (official) Vodafone UK forums we have come across an SPL version not listed in you main list "HBOOT-1.33.0007 (SAPP10000)".

This is from a UK Vodafone handset.

We are trying to find out if this could be related the poor signals etc as the user of this spl says he has no issues with network dropouts. Has anyone come across this version?

Hi again. Post 147. Happy to extract if is risk-free and someone can tell me how. (Still no dropped signals).

Update: Wife returned her phone under warranty for the continuously dropping signal. Today she received supposedly reconditioned replacement handset back, with 0007 hboot. This would seem to confirm this is the new default UK rom.

Folks in U.S. on 0005 have confirmed they get the dropped signal issue, so I would also presume that between 0004 / 5 and 0007 a fix has been made.

It's unlocked and I'm using it in the US.

I want to be able to debrand my phone by replacing the boot splash screen. I would also like to still be able to run my factory OS in addition to loading new ROMs to try out.

I really can not afford to brick my phone, but I'm unsure which SPL to download. I do have a Nanddroid backup of the phone.

Thanks,

Once you have a custom recovery you can just flash the SPL's mentioned in the first post :

Copy the zipped spl you want to the root of your sdcard
boot into recovery mode (hold home while booting)
select update:zip and choose the zipped spl
apply

Hi!

That seems a great solution. I have the recovery-RAv1.2.1G.img recovery image installed, so I guess I can do that.

Which SPL should I install on my 32B?

Is this a safe precedure, or can I brick my phone? I have seen quite a few phones bricked by updating their spl...

After I update the new spl, will I have to install my custom ROM?

There seems to be alot of confusion as to which SPL version to flash and a few bricked phones because of it. Could someone please answer any/all of these questions:

I assume the 00xx Original SPL versions in the original post correspond with the 20xx Engineering SPL versions, is this correct?

If your phone has an older SPL version (eg: 0004), is it possible and are you better to update to a later SPL version (eg: 0005, 0009 or 0010)?

Does anyone know what the CPLD number is relevant to? Yes I have read Wikipedia and am aware that CPLD is an acronym which means programmable hardware chip, what makes CPLD-10 different from CPLD-11 different from CPLD-12?

Are you better to stick to images that correspond to your CPLD version? (eg: xx04/xx05 for CPLD-10, xx08/xx09/xx10 for CPLD-11/12)

There has been talk of being able to backup your original shipment SPL before flashing an engineering SPL, what is the tool to do this? Where is it available?

Does flashing an Engineering SPL stop you from booting the original provider ROM?

Does flashing an Engineering SPL stop you from receiving OTA updates from your provider when using an original provider ROM?

Thankyou.

Hi All,

I had just flashed SPL 1.33.2005 to HTC Magic 32A as I want to flash
Amon_RA's recovery rom RAv1.2.1H to my phone.

I flashed the SPL first the way i flashed ROM.
and then I followed the instruction in this to flash recovery image to my phone permanently
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=530492
:D

Because USB driver on Windows 7 is not working properly when I wanted to flash a ROM.

Now I can go into fast boot by Home + Power :D

Now I just need to put the ROM i want into SD card and flash it right away :D

Thank you all. You guys ROCK!!!!

Should I just get the update engineering 1.33.2009 zip file and flash it? Fundamentally can I go from one engineering spl to another engineering spl without a brick?

This is the update.zip for the original SPL HBOOT-1.33.0004 (SAPP10000) : Sapphire PVT 32B SHIP S-ON G : CPLD-10 from Vodafone SPAIN.

I have test it with Recovery RAv1.2.2 and the installation is OK.

Enjoy it!!! ;)

How did you extract this? I have 1.33.007 SPL for the magic on 32B and no-one able to tell me how to extract so I i can provide to you all to fix the dropping signal issue.

HBOOT 1.33.0009 (SAPP30000) - American TMOBILE Mytouch3g purchased from a TMobile authorized dealer - branded tmobile on front and back - but running VODAFONE HTC ROM - no tmobile splash, but vodafone splash instead. Then HTC Magic.

what in gods name is this phone?

Hi Quick question, I currently have the 1.33.2005 SPL on a 32A rogers magic and am not sure If I should upgrade to the 1.33.2010 SPL.

I dont know what the differences are between the two, but I am finding my phone to be sluggish and loosing 3G quite often.

Any suggestions on where I might find what the differences are, also how would I upgrade from 2005 to 2010 - should I follow http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=548379

Hi,

I had just flashed 2005 to 2009, no problem at all but you need to re-flash the rom. I just flash 2009 spl and flash eugene's roms :D
JUST FYI :D

It pretty easy to flash. Give them both a try and report back your findings. I would love to know. I chose 2009 because I heard great reviews.

Hi there, I recently owned a Rogers Magic and now I've replaced that with a 32B Vodafone UK Magic due to HSDPA differences on the 3G network blah blah...
What I want to know is who has had the best experiences with loading an Engineerings SPL and which SPL(s) did you use. I'm thinking either Crios's 2004 or 2009 but please post your experiences as I don't want to brick my phone.

Ok so I'm planning on changing my spl to Eng spl 2009. My questions

As you can see by my signature I have Amon_Ra's recovery so here goes.
As i've read:

step 1.Put the spl .zip file on the root of my SD card
2.use recovery to flash the zip file

ok so here's where i get scared as the last time i did this i bricked my first magic ........soooooo DO I

3.Once flashed then select reboot phone now? OR
3.Once flashed, then flash my rom i.e myhero 1.1.3 then
reboot once it's complete of course.

Please no "Read the wiki" etc as i saw a post in here that says exactly what i've been thinking ..too much conflicting information which confuses things. And when things are answered they are half answered always leaving something out. Thanks guys !!!:D

By doing this:

1.Put the spl .zip file on the root of my SD card
2.Use recovery to flash the zip file
3.Once flashed then select reboot phone

That's it. I had the ROM already in the root of my SD card in case I needed it but it turns out I didn't. Phone still working.

Running RA's v1.2.3H recovery + RA-IONv1.6.2H ROM.

Can we safely go from one SPL to another?? The reason I ask is I have the problem with the blurry screen at boot but I only encountered it when I flashed a new SPL. Now I have read up on it & it looks like some people running the same ROM with different SPL's don't have the blurry screen.

Seeing how so many people had problems bricking with haykuro's DangerSPL, the SPL is something I don't wanna mess with unless I have a definate answer. So anyone wanna chime in on this?

Once you have Amon's recovery installed, then you just:

1) Copy your choice of SPL into your sdcard

Be sure that you name the SPL file as "update.zip" in your sdcard

2) Boot into the recovery

3) Apply the "update.zip" from the Recovery menu

4) Reboot

we need a method to "extract" a SPL from sapphire 32b.

for this, is necessary a boot.bin or recovery.bin with mtd6 enabled into kernel.

There are no differences as far as I know, I'm using the 2005 version too.

I listed all the available SPL's because sometimes you'll need a specific SPL version in order to flash something (when the update script checks for a specific HBOOT version).
