Before moving forward, I kindly request all the gene users to kindly post all your doubts regarding storage cards in this thread only.
Hi everyone.i have made this thread for all those gene user who are confused to choose storage cards best suitable for gene.
★ Wellll...first of all let me make it straight forward that gene is expandable upto 32GB.
★ You can use 2GB, 4GB, 8GB, 16GB and 32GB cards on any of the ROMs.
★ HTC Gene has a 201MHz processor. So,make sure before you directly start dumping your files in your flash card, make sure you categorize your files in specific folders. Also, take care that alot of files are not dumped in a single folder.Otherwise, the device goes slow as in case of opening file explorer/windows.
★All these cards can be well used with W.M.5,W.M.6,W.M.6.1,W.M.6.1 and W.M.6.5.1 respectively. So no need to fear about compatibility issues.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Storage Cards Formats :
Storage wise, fat32 is best, you will get 20% more storage than FAT. But if you regularly backup your SD Card, you will see that while copying multiple files, the speed will be slower than FAT. that is the tradeoff. For regular use, FAT32 works fine, but use it only with cards >= 4 GB in size. Otherwise you wont gain much benefit. This is also because only cards >=4GB come in SDHC format. SDHC handles FAT32 better than pure SD.
One more thing that you will have to remember while using FAT32 on SD card, while flashing, you will have to remove the card, otherwise, flashing process wont start. This is because FAT32 is the filesystem used for SDCard flashing and Gene gets stuck on reading SDCard.
NTFS is not supported natively on Windows Mobile and i dont know if a pluggable file system driver exists.
So overall :
For SDHC cards >=4GB : Use FAT32 and remove it while flashing.Bit Slow speed while copying/moving large no of files but good storage.
For SD Cards < 4Gb : Use FAT, no need to remove while flashing. Good speed in file copy/ move operations but 10-20% less space. FAT32 on < 4GB cards makes them crawl.
I hope this will help you in choosing the right file system.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Difference between SD and SDHC cards.
both SD and SDHC are the same.
As the size of the micro sd card gets bigger you will not find sd but sdhc.
Up to 2gb = sd
4gb + = sdhc
HC on the end jus means high capacity, so supports bigger mem cards.
so if your going for a bigger size card, you probably will only find sdhc.
If your device is SDHC compatible, then it can take both SD and SDHC. However, devices that are not SDHC compatible can only take SD.

true...but regarding compatibility if ur device(eg.gene which is not compatible to SDHC cards) contains the required supporting dll files it does support an SDHC card which i am using. :)
im now looking forward for a 16GB SDHC card.will come in a month i guess.i tried it out in a local shop in pune.works great on gene.will get one for my later this month. :)

no problem mannn....feel free to discuss...well, u may be true.Actually, when i was about to buy an SDHC card, even i was confused about the compatability. But then i took advice from Sumit(Krazy) and he acknowledged me than all his roms do contain the supporting dll for SDHC.thats why i went for an SDHC card as i wanted an 8gb storage. :)
As far as i remember, even my friend(with whom i went to buy the card...) had a brand new stock new gene...we tried the card first in his device.din run..not even didnt recognise the card. But as i was using sumit's VM v3.1.1 it worked without problems on my gene. :)

Hi,
I am using a new Gene and I flashed Sumit's ProUser WM6.5 Build21815 ROM onto it. This ROM, I have read, supports SDHC cards. I was using a 2GB SD card on my phone and it still works fine.
I bought a 4GB Kingston MicroSDHC card, hoping to get more storage. When I plug that card in, the phone shows 'Memory Card Not Installed'. I tried with other MicroSDHC cards and they all say the same. If I plug in my old 2GB SD card, it works fine.

Yes, the card I am using is a brand new card. Bought it specially to increase the storage in the phone. I have another phone that supports MicroSDHC upto 8GB and this card works fine in that.
I can also read the card in the built-in card reader on my laptop as well as in a MicroSD card reader that I bought.
I tried using an 8GB MicroSDHC in the Gene and that was not detected either.
In short, the MicroSDHCs work everywhere else apart from the Gene.

u need to have omap_SDHC.dll fine in your rom to get SDHC cards working.which is coming ready with the new wm6.1 as well as wm6.5 xip and sys updates from newer builds on xda developers.im right now using an 16gb KINGSTON SDHC card on my KARANZ_PRO V1(see my signature) and it works absolutely fine.14gb is already filled.did not experience any lag or hanging problems till date. :)

One question dude.... Might be lame but still have to know it... Gene supports SD(Secure Digital) cards when it was dispatched by the company itself. And just with the extra OMAP850_SDHC.dll driver in the new roms that you all have created(God bless you for them:D:D) it can support SDHC(Secure Digital High Capacity). Which implies that gene had the hardware chip to read it all along or that SD cards have similar chips and just the driver is responsible for reading them.
Now heres what i want to know. Could we believe that with a similar driver change gene is yet possible to read SDXC(Secure digital Xtended Capacity):rolleyes: cards beyond 32 GB (I'm almost sure it can. It just needs someone to be able to crack it wit a driver). Has anyone ever tried? Has anyone ever succeeded?

i never heard about SDXC cards.but if the necessary supporting dll file is integrated in a rom,i think it should.but why BEYOND 32gb? i myself am using a 16GB SDHC card.and works absolutely fine.i wish in future windows PDA devices come with ports for Portable hard discs and pendrive ports too.plus if we get an configuration of 1gb to 4gb ram,i bet windows devices will rule the world. :)

well,if ur SDHC card is detecting the files u have stored on it.its working absolutely fine.as far as the playlist is concerned, core player and TCPMP are almost supporting all the formats.(both audio and video).playlist extension is .pls if im not wrong.check the extension of ur files.maybe the file might have been corrupt.

Dear karan iam using mp4 file format for videos and all these videos can be played from file manager the only problem is, i cant play these videos directly from playlist of core player and windows media player. If i try to play from play list then it will stuck my device for nearly 10sec, after that the video will play as normal.I think u can understand my problem.
{sorry for my bad english}:(

{sorry for my bad english}:(
1)for playlist there is an extension .pls which is recognized by both core player as well as TCPMP player.u need to go to the file associations and check the required file formats u wish to play.
Also, i guess in TCPMP player, .mp4 codec is there mentioned in file associates, but when u play an video file with the same extension, the sound goes off.
For videos optimal performance with no lag, configure core player or TCPMP player Equalizer settings.have a look at the setting i use specially for watching movies.make sure your audio booster is set to default.this is very important otherwise u will experience lag.
http://img524.imageshack.us/img524/6218/screen01f.png
but first, for better performance use TOTAL VIDEO CONVERTER or other software to resize ur videos to 240*320 pixel screen resolution.for videos i would suggest to use dvdrip avi or xvid avi extensions.avoid using flash .flv video formats.
2)windows media player does not support all the audio and video formats so avoid using the same specially for videos.
3)regarding device hanging problem for 10 seconds,im using a 16GB SDHC card right now and almost 12gb is filled.coreplayer works absolutely fine for both playlists as well as individual files and there is no lag.once u have the video file resized as i said,u wont face any lag.;)

Hi,
I have a HTC P3400i handset and I am unable to use my Storage card memory. It says that I need to install the storage card. I checked if the SD card is bad using an external card reader. The card looks good. So can anyone help me to install the SD card on the handset?

u do not need to install a software to use your storage card.Which storage card are u using? can u provide some detail? what capacity? mini SD/micro SD/SDHC.

Is it much safer to Flash new ROM to Gene using STORAGE CARD?
If you suffer unexpected light cutoffs in your area,i suppose the storage card method would be safe.otherwise, there is not much difference.once you have patched your HSPL properly, you are always at the safer side.;)

please format your SD card( FAT32 format).
then rename the rom file to GENEIMG.nbh
make sure your HSPL has been changed/unlocked before updating your device to a custom rom.
charge your device to 100% and then flash as shown in the procedure in first post.

Hi All,
I have been stuck up with a problem, not sure if this is the right forum to ask teh doubt..but as this thread is dedicated to Storage cards i thought to give t a try.
Recently i had used my phones storage card on a system and my card got affected by a virus. All the card name and files in it were changed to special characters. when i checked (again on my pc this time) there is no data on my card, its hodden and only a file called "Secret.exe" on my card. However on checking the properties i can see that the used memory is quite huge which means my data is there on teh card but is not visible.
I had some imp data on the card so not possible to format the card.
Does any one have come across this virus and knows the way to extract my data?
Any kind of help will be appreciated, as i have checked on google and am afraid have not been able to find even one perfect solution for this one on a SD card.

iv come across virus many times using my kingston 8GB and 16GB storage cards.try scanning your storage card.if you use quick heal, i think your problem will be solved.whereas, to be on a safer side, format it.
after formatting the storage card,if you still suffer problems operating the device, do a clear storage.

Hi All,
just for the update i found this software "BadCopy Pro" refered to me by one of the users in teh forum and it worked like magic!!
Extracted all my files in a jiffy ..the only catch though it will let you extract and preview the files but wont let you save the files till you have registration key.... but really worth its price :D (somewhere around 36$)

I am facing problems in flashing with SD card. When I reach the soft reset stage, I see a white screen with something like Reading SD card slot, buit only for fraction of second. Then I'm taken to bootloader mode, i.e., the tricolor screen. And then, nothing happens. Am I supposed to get the tricolour screen?
Thanks in advance.
