Push Notifications (for more than email)

I searched Google and the XDA forums and couldn't come up with much. With all the recent talk about the iPhone having push notifications I was wondering if something similar exists for Windows Mobile. I understand that unlike the iPhone, WM has the ability to multitask, but it would save battery life if it supported other push notifications (not just email). Does anyone know if such a thing exists? I am mainly looking for push notifications of instant messages because it seems like every IM application I've tried drains the battery pretty fast if I leave it open in the background.

But something in BG must be open to know when notified ;) battery drains because data conn is on! IPhone probably make control every X min/sec like mail or IM.
