Initial Troubleshooting if Android will not boot:

Flash with the suggested Radio and Rom
Format your SDCard and start over
Get a new SDCard and try that

I can't get data to work, I made a call and also made a data connection before starting Haret. I used all the files from the ION download thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4015874&postcount=1).
The modem keeps giving 'failed'. I also disconnected (no connection but to reset the modem) and tried to connect afterwards but no luck.
Otherwise it seems to be speedier and the graphics look better (maybe the resolution...)

I have the same problem as above, i.e. Modem will not connect.

On launching the modem app (after setting up the APN), I get the message "PPP connection went down. Done". On pressing "Connect", I get the message "Starting pppd..." then after a couple of minutes "Connection attempt failed".

I always ensure I have a data connection open in WinMo before running Haret and have tried making a call before Haret as suggested by mburris. I swapped out the initrd.gz for one from a previous Okibi 1.5 build but, although modem connected, I couldn't sign in to Google, so I was no further forward.

For the three of you who are having connection issues:

Please make sure you are using the application called "Modem" instead of Toga.

Also if that still does not work, please delete your move your existing data.img file off the card, and try starting with the data.gz file. This will create a new data.img file. Having a fresh data file, designed for ION, will allow us to rule out any issues that may have been caused by a damaged data file.

Step 1: Download the files:
-Download ExtractToRootOfSDCard.zip below and extract *everything* to the root of your SD card
-Download system.img from below and put it in the root of your SD card
-Download zImage from below and put it in the root of your SD card

As you can read in my post (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4016505&postcount=4), I used modem instead of togga.
After using a clean data file (the one that came with the ION files) I didn't even have togga.

Android tried unzipping the data.gz but failed (not enough room error; which is incorrect, there is plenty of room)
I extracted the data.gz by hand on windows and renamed it to data.img and put it on the sd-card.

Did that before posting yesterday, so it doesn't work (for me).

I will also post this here, it's in the android thread as well:

I still can't get data to work with the ION rom, steps i took:

Downloaded all the ION files.
Used a fresh data
Used the new intird.gz as mentioned in this post (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4019712&postcount=6014)
Removed the ppp setting from my startup.txt as mentioned in this post (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4019768&postcount=6017)

After each step I tried it again but the modem keeps giving me 'FAILED'

@mburris...I was using Modem, as you can see from my original post. Have also tried a new data.gz, as this was mentioned on the main Android thread in the Kaiser Rom forum and still no joy.

@stringbean...Rebooting has helped to resolve data connection problems with 1.1 builds, but had no effect with the Ion build.

I don't know enough about the Kaiser hardware to know whether this is relevant, but it strikes me as more than a coincidence that those reporting data connection issues in this thread all have the KAIS120 variant of the handset.

Also is there an Advanced task manager that ION supports the one in Okibis will not work correctly I think this may be some of the reason phone starts lagging it is getting piled up with running apps and I have no way of closing them that I can find

I'm getting endless process crashing for powermanager at boot and then periodically. I think there are serious issues with the power management-- just look at the root console and see the never ending list of debug messages about it. Packagemanager crashes when trying to install/uninstall software like Retro Clock or OpenHome2, etc.

Seconded on the Advanced Task Manager. It 'works' by seeing processes and services but applications is empty. I'd always clean out apps on bootup and then every 1/2 hour or so. Can't now and Android's not too efficient at closing processes. I know that you can set up a limit on running apps but that doesn't seem to be the best practice.

AFAIK the KAIS110 vs KAIS120 only has a different camera and one extra.

Why did we not have this problem with 1.1?

Is there any way to disable the box to require a SIM pin to use the phone? I can receive calls, send and receive texts, and use data, but I cannot dial out, nor can I view my SIM contacts. I've tried to unlock my SIM to dial out but it says that my SIM pin is incorrect even though it is the right pin. The SIM pin is disabled in WM and works fine.

Thank you

I can't get online. When I go to Settings-Wireless controls-Mobile Networks-Network operators, it says "error while searching for networks".
I can call out just fine, and I have a small signal-strength icon on the top line.

I removed the username/password/apn settings from startup.txt, and added APN in Android.

Where do I go from here? :)

h0mer, if I were you, I would format the SD card, and then only put the files listed in the first post on your card. This will start with a fresh data.gz (there shouldn't be a data.img file on the SD card until AFTER the first bootup)

It sounds like you might have an SD Card issue.

What command, exactly are you using to "look at the root console and see the never ending list of debug messages"? I would like to try it and see what mine says.

Not an SD card issue at all. It's with the build but there are 3rd party apps on my phone too but I hold that they should work. Maybe I'll one-by-one see if I can narrow them down. At least that will answer your question from the first page of this thread.

Get to the root console:
Fn+Left Softkey (on the keyboard not the faceplate)
Leave the root console:
Fn+Right Softkey (also on the keyboard)

The root console spits out debugging messages. 90% of them are battery or power related, maybe 5% is USB activity and the rest is whatever's left. This is also the console that is visible when Haret drops the initrd.gz into memory as if there aren't many debugging errors, you will still see the "Copying Applications" and "Android" marks from bootup. There was some major work done with power management and I believe (wild ass guess) that the devs that worked on it left them there to test but never removed them. Possibly assuming we wouldn't notice.

Nice that it leaves that shell open though.

I've Downloaded everything multiple times, and tried on multiple SD cards. Now I am only get the same error messages as everyone else. A little frustrating, is it just not ready for every model yet?

Don't hate. Past kaiser owner, now Polaris owner, but very similar phones still!

Anyways, these ion files are working not bad on a lot of our polaris', but we are having a few issues. We don't have the developer power yet to tweak stuff so I thought I'd throw this out there, basically a general question.

For myself, I can receive calls and have a conversation no problem, and send and receive text messages, but I can't make any outgoing calls. As soon as i dial the number, the call ends right away.

Data connection does not work, but I know it can be picky so I'm not worried about that at the moment, but the not being able to make out going calls is reallly sucking. Does this ever happen to anyone?

A lot of us have tried different radios and roms and doesn't make a difference, for really any issues we have.

EDIT: Actually I see some Kaiser owners are having that problem too!

Ok guys, for me i allways had to use a 1.1 build for syncing and the i can use it in all other builds. So no real problem with Data Connection.
Using latest ION Build, and i can sync my gmail, use market, browser, lastfm all works so far.
OpenGL apps like Neocore works, too.
Also i just get the ppp error just for one time, after another click on connect in modem it works...

This is my startup.txt i use for many versions:

set RAMSIZE 0x07000000
set RAMADDR 0x10000000
set FBDURINGBOOT 0

Which to me is weird because the difference (what I could find) is just in the camera's...
Maybe the code of this and 1.1 should be compared to see what the difference could be for the data connection...

I'm a little confused, I'm trying to update my kaiser (AT&T Tilt) to the latest Ion build. I'm currently running a bundle that came in a zip file called ExtractToRootOfSDCard.zip from a week or two ago. I'm looking at http://code.google.com/p/vogue-android/downloads/list wondering witch of these files I need if I just want to upgrade an already running Ion "install" Also can all of these files that are labeled as for the vogue also be used on the kaiser?

Get Vilord's latest builds. The zip on the front page here is outdated. ION runs on my Kaiser just fine.

data.gz: Don't need to download (will be recreated if missing automatically). Holds your settings, wallpaper, etc.
system.img: core Android image
initrd.gz: initial RAM disk, of importance to you is that it affects data, calls, etc.-- actual 'phone' stuff.

Apologies for the doubler post, but I dont think this going to get any time in the other android thread so I'm hoping someone here will help:

The latest build from google code gives me the following on my Polaris: "running an fsck on the SD Card
dosfsck 3.0.1, 23 November 2008, Fat32 LFN"

Its stuck at this for the last 20 mins. I have a Sandisk 4Gb SDHC card.

Any ideas anyone?

I've not been able to boot at all with the latest zimage and have been using dzo's april zimage-gpu before this to get it to boot but that crashed all apps.

I'm not sure why it should matter but I hacked my Wii and I can use an SDHC on the internal reader but can't use it with an external USB reader. It could be something that simple. Maybe there's a fix but I should think it's an issue with Haret.

I think i can explain that: The possibility for reading SDHC Card is software sided. Every SD reader is "Hardware Sided" able to read and write SDHC. But the internal firmware must support it. On your WII i think you changed some software to get access for SDHC on the internal reader. But maybe the firmware of the external USB reader didn't support SDHC.

I think in our case it's another problem, maybe the used card. I'm using android on my Sandisk SDHC car with no problems, kaiser has an SDHC reader and android has the ability to use SDHC, too. Maybe the card is defect or it's not using standards? who knows..

I initialise my connection through the Modem app but it doesn't make any difference.

Anyone know how I can fix this? I've tried searching through both the Niki and Kaiser forums and haven't found any solutions...

WM ROM: "3.29.409.0 NOR" (Official Norwegian Windows Mobile 6.1 ROM by HTC)
Radio ROM: 1.65.17.56
Android build: v1.5 released 07/23/09 on androidonhtc
Carrier: NetCom GSM Norway
Kaiser Model: Retail HTC branded kaiser (HTC TyTN II)
SDHC card: Sandisk 8GB, formatted with FAT32

I have just tested the 1.5 build of android released on 07/23/09 on my HTC TyTN II, and just want to share my experience in case someone finds this info useful.

I am using the default-kaiser.txt boot script, with the apn settings for my carrier entered.

What I tested that seems to work:

- Android boots, and I can browse through the menus and use all the programs that don't rely on any extra hardware or an internet connection (like the calculator)

- Both touch screen and the keyboard work. The buttons work, but aren't mapped as they "should be" in the final release (the windows button seems to act as an "enter menu" button, while the mail button seems to be a "back" button. End call button seems to put the device into standby)

- Battery meter works, but shows a different charge status than the WM battery meter. (Bug or not?) The battery meter also detects if the charger is plugged in or not.

- Sliding the keyboard in or out changes the orientation of the display correctly once the android has booted properly.

- Music player can play music through the loudspeaker at the back

- Music player can read MP3s located on the SD card outside the file system images.

What I tested that does not work / is bugged:
- Phone Calls don't work. I have not yet tried receiving a phone call.

- Data connection. I have entered the apn settings into the default.txt in WM before booting android, and into the APN settings within android. I have made sure that the data connection is up and working before booting into android. I have tried establishing the data connection with the "Modem" application, which just sits there for a while before failing. I have not yet tried to disable my PIN code to see if that gets around the problem, but I will do that later. (Other TyTN II users say they got it working without doing this)

- When powering the device back on from standby, I get lots of horizontal lines across the screen. Sometimes this is just a few annoying lines, with the screen still visible on the lines that are not effected, but other times it makes the entire screen completely unreadable. I have to reboot the phone and boot up android again to fix this.

You have done some great work so far guys. I hope this info helps you with your development and that one day we'll have a fully working android build for our TyTN IIs. So far it has been interesting to just be able to load the OS on my own device to take a look at its features :)

If you're on T-Mobile (also Rogers I think....) there is something with the way the SIM card is activated which causes us to not be able to make outgoing phone calls. The developers are working on it I believe. You can try older builds, it used to work just fine.

Of course, if you're not on one of those providers then it could be something else. I've read where people need to make sure they make one outgoing call in Winmo before running haret, or immediately making one outgoing call upon booting into Android.

All other features ware working great. I have tried two latest builds (android-1.5-2009-08-08.zip and android-1.5-2009-07-23.zip) results are the same.

Please help how to resolve this issue.
Thanks.

Thought I'd give android a try this weekend and everything worked fine - android booted, data worked, played around with it for a little bit - until I restarted.

1. The phone now reboots into the bootloader. No amount of removing the battery and restarting has helped me to boot. If I pull the battery and then leave the phone off for an hour or two though, it will boot correctly into winmo. However, as soon as I soft-reset it goes back to the bootloader screen.

2. I tried flashing rom and radio, but it has no effect on the problem.

3. When I have the storage card with the android image inserted a message will briefly flash within the bootloader that says "No image file!". When the card is removed no message appears.

4. I haven't had a chance to get indepth with mtty.exe. It does not play nicely with Windows 7 and I won't have access to an XP machine for the next few days. I'll set up a VM tonight to see if that'll work.

I'm back to the trusty Q9H for the time being. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You should add APN in settings or by pressing menu in the settup wizzard.

Hi!

I have the same problem everytime I have to reboot or run out of battery, it sometimes works when the device has been connected to a computer for some time via usb. it also sometimes works after removing the battery for some time.

This behavior and what's displayed on the bootloader screen doesn't fit the scenarios described in the "kaiser stuck at bootloader" thread.

ROM: Hyperdragon IV IOlite
Radio: 1.71.09.01
Carrier: T-Mobile
Kaiser Model: KAIS120 (according to this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AT&T_Tilt#Versions))

Hi,

For those of you who cannot get data to work, please try the following :

Edit the default.txt file. Look for ppp.apn="some value". Change the value to the access point name for your service provider.

Save the file and boot into android again.

After booting into android, Press the start hardware button.
Select settings.
Select Wireless Controls
Select Mobile Network Settings
Select Access Point Names
Press the start hardware button
Select New APN
Type the APN name for your service provider
Save the settings

Now try to connect using mobile data and it will work. Its working for me perfectly.

Hope this helps.

I tried out the 9/11 build lastnight....great work with the wifi and GPS! I'm also thankful for the HTC Exchange integration, though it doesn't seem to sync calendar or contacts, a let down by HTC. I also like the resolution change from the 7-9-09 build.

But, there seems to be performance issues which make it kinda laggy to touch inputs, not all the time, but a lot of the time.

Poor battery life . Phone gets HOT to the touch and won't wake after long sleeps. On a side note everything except camera and a few other minor items work . Good job so far .

I have a TyTN II, running the most recent ION build. The only problem I'm having currently is that audio does not work anywhere. Ringtones don't make any noise and I can't hear anything during calls.

I'm new to this, so I'm not entirely sure what I should be posting, or what configuration I can actually make to fix this. Can anyone suggest anything I can try? Or suggest anything I can post to help with debugging.

ROM: 1.81.710.1 WWE
Radio: 1.27.12.11
Carrier: Optus
Model: KAIS130 (I think)

Trying the most recent kernels and basefiles from here (http://code.google.com/p/vogue-android/downloads/list), but still not having any luck with audio. With some kernels the earpiece speaker works during calls, but I've never had the main speaker work (to play ringtones, menu noises, etc) and I haven't been able to get the microphone working during calls either.

Hi

Sorry to ask similar questions to previous posters, but i don't see anyone with my exact same phone/provider.

Rom: 3.28.161.1 WWE
Radio: 1.65.16.25
Model No: Kaiser
Provider: Vodafone UK

I've tried every dist I can find (7 to date) with combinations of
rootfs
system
zImage
initrd

The first time I put the ppp.apn stuff in the default.txt and then setup APN everything worked on the internet, but after a reboot it hasn't work again, despite trying all the stuff mentioned above.

I'm reluctant to flash the Rom/Radio, but if somebody can tell me this is the problem, then so be it?

Thanks for any help?

Re-installed original (latest) dist and wifi worked - for the first time.
Then tried internet (with & without wifi) and everything worked.
Then internet stopped working, including after restart.
Only then did it occur to me that the battery had now lost some of it's charge. It was @ about 60-70%, connected charger and bingo!
WM doesn't need such an amount of battery, so I hadn't thought Android would either, but it does.
Hope this helps anyone else who's had internet access come and go without anu other obvious reason?
