Forgive me if this is answered elsewhere, but I couldn't find it
Using your recovery image (1.2.0G) on MT3G, Whenever I do attempt to do a nandroid backup, when I reboot after the backup completes, the devices hangs indefinitely at the boot screen. logcat just says waiting for device.
I am also unable to restore the backup after I can no longer boot the device.
Ultimately this results in me having to wipe the device and reflash my ROM.
Just wondering if this is a known issue, something I am doing wrong, or something else.
Thanks in advance.

I assume that your MT3G is rooted and that you are using an Engineerings SPL? How much space do you have available on your SDcard?

can you add an option of formatting just fat32 and ext2/3/4?
i was reading 51dusty's sdparted thread and it lets you do so, im asking this as i do not own a class 6 sd card and hence see no point in trying to have a swap partition

51dusty's sdparted is included, you can run it via adb once the recovery is booted. :)
I assume you also want a menu option that does this?

Hello, when i apply updates via CM Updater i get the version of the recovery img in the first line and second says "E: Invalid (command or argument)" i don't remember well... happened with version 1.2.0G and now still happends after the update.
Also would be nice if we could erase ext2/3 partition data from the recovery menu.

i don't think that is necessary. there are perfectly good instructions in the thread about sdparted:

maybe a quick list of instructions of how to do each script would help most people.

A while ago I flashed a rom into my 32A Magic and it all went well...
Today I was preparing to flash another rom, but when I started by running the recovery ROM in fastboot mode, now a message appears in windows console wich does not allow recovery rom to run!
Here is the message:
creating boot image...
creating boot image - xxxxxxxx bytes
downloading 'boot.img'... OKAY
booting... FAILED (remote: reproduce boot image with on-flash ramdisk error)
When i flashed my first rom I entered the recovery rom as many times as I needed, and now I get this...
I searched the forum but found no resoults ...
Maybe you could help because I ran out of ideas!

You don't have an Engineerings SPL, that's why it's not working...
You can check you SPL by booting in fastboot mode, you do this by holding the BACK key while booting your phone (power off your phone hold the BACK key, and press the power key while holding the BACK key until you see the fastboot menu).
Download this file (http://rapidshare.com/files/247838950/update.Engineering-SPL-HBOOT-1.33.2005-signed.zip) and rename it to update.zip
Copy update.zip to the root of your SDcard
Boot into Cyanogen's recovery (that should be on your phone right now) by holding the HOME key while booting your phone
Wait a minute (for your SD card to mount)
Apply the update
Once flashing is done you can check your SPL in fastboot again, it should read .2005

Hello
I got a failure information when I flash this 1.2.1 revovery img. from 1.2.0 by:
"fastboot flash recovery recovery-RAv1.2.1H.img"
fastboot flash recovery recovery-rav1.2.1h.img
sending 'recovery' (3326 KB)... OKAY

FAILED (remote: signature verify fail)
I noted you have revised the method of flashing it, so I tryied the method when you released 1.2.0:
fastboot boot recovery-RAv1.2.1H.img
Wait for a minute or two..
adb shell mount -a
Ignore the failed mounts...
adb push recovery-RAv1.2.0H.img /system/recovery.img
adb push recovery-RAv1.2.0H.img /sdcard/recovery-RAv1.2.1H.img
adb shell flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-RAv1.2.1H.img
then I use the "Root Booter" to boot my Magtic to Recovery mode directly, the screen shows that the 1.2.1H has been flashed into my phone already
so, I'm just wandering why i can not use "fastboot flash recovery recovery-RAv1.2.1H.img" to flash this img.?

adb shell rm /data/recovery.img
ok so my Phone is at the HOME screen and im in command prompt and i type ADB Devices to verify my SN number

With all the A2SD options I'd love to see this one as well.
If I use a cyanogen rom I can repeatedly upgrade without losing data, but when I switch roms to check out a hero rom, I get stuck in reboot loops. This is the best way to fix it.
If possible a ext4 format as well as Cyanogen is able to use ext4 as well.

That's a good thing, it means they are not there so you can go ahead and flash the recovery... :)
When they are there it means that your recovery will be overwritten at boot time so you will loose your flashed rom again.

Your SPL is ok, you don't need to flash 2005.
You have a myTouch3G, that's a 32B, so you correctly flashed RAv1.2.1G.
If your Hero ROM is stuck at the second boot screen it probably means that :
1. you didn't wipe
2. you didn't partition your SD card correctly
3. you don't wait long enough :p

Waiting for device means that your pc can't find your phone... check your drivers. Try "fastboot devices" to see if your drivers are installed correctly.

Sorry for my possible ignorant question, but what benefit does permanently flashing the recovery image on provide, if any, on a Roger's 32A Magic?
Currently I change roms all the time, each time I do I boot up with back+power. Then I run the trusty "fastboot boot recovery.img". From there I flash my rom. Would permanently flashing the image just keep me from having to do the fastboot step from a dos window?

Better than that, is if your customizated ROM is malfunctioning, anytime and anywhere you can come backup to your previous backup from nandroid without the fastboot..
It already happen to me.. I had installed the usually programs on a new ROM and on this one didn't mentioned that was overclocked already.. I had installed the openoverclock.. I had to take out the battery on it to check the s/n of the phone to make the register on HTC and when it booted, every time it suspend it, it restarted automatically. I had previously made a backup from the old version of that ROM, so I just restore it and when I got home, I tested and checked the issue ;)

So quick question,
I just got a Rogers branded Magic. I want to root it and get redglasses MyHero ROM running on it. I was going to follow the instructions here:
http://theunlockr.com/2009/07/08/how-to-root-your-htc-magic/
which primarily uses daldroids recovery image and some rooted rom (I'm guessing?)
Can I use your/this recovery image instead? v1.2? I noticed rooting rogers instructions earlier using older versions of this recovery image. No problem?
Second question is then, after you have flashed a rooted ROM? then afterwards when I flash the MyHero ROM image - will my phone still be rooted?? Is whether a phone rooted dependent on the ROM only?
Thanks in advance!

It looks like the procedure I followed to root my phone over on Howardforums already had me flash some older recovery image. I tried the home+power and my current nandroid backup is 2.1.
I guess it was these steps:6. fastboot flash boot boot.img
7. fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
8. fastboot reboot
I'm going to test out the newest one and then flash it over I suppose. Maybe not brick it!

So quick question,
I just got a Rogers branded Magic. I want to root it and get redglasses MyHero ROM running on it. I was going to follow the instructions here:
http://theunlockr.com/2009/07/08/how-to-root-your-htc-magic/
I cant answer your question exactly, but I also have a Roger's branded Magic and I followed these steps exactly to root my Magic, and apparently flash a recovery image:
http://howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1545226 (can I paste offsite links here?)
I did not flash a rom in that process. I've tried a boatload of 32A roms and some that wouldn't boot up at all. Currently I've landed on MyHero 0.1.0 and yes it is still rooted.

I have some questions about how to actually flash this newest recovery image.
This is how I got my original recovery installed a while back4. reboot out of recovery mode.
5. power off phone, hold back button and power to boot into fastboot again
6. fastboot flash boot boot.img
7. fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
8. fastboot reboot
Now your steps for installing this are a little different. Part 1:adb remount
adb shell rm /system/recovery.img
OR (depending on where your ROM is storing the recovery image)
adb shell rm /data/recovery.img
Q: Am I doing that from inside a running rom? I tried adb remount from the fastboot screen and from the recovery and it was a no go.
Next you havefastboot erase recovery
fastboot flash recovery recovery-RAv1.2.1H.img
Q: Is this also done from inside a working rom?
PS. When I soft tested it "fastboot boot recovery<x>.img" it worked fantastic! Nice upgrade from my older recovery with like 4 options in there.

file etc does not exists is ok, it means the the files are already deleted...
Waiting for device means that your pc can't find your phone... check your drivers. Try "fastboot devices" to see if your drivers are installed correctly.
i tried this and in fastboot mode, FASTBOOT DEVICES shows a serial number for the phone. im guessing thats good?
but i still cannot load up this recovery

Is it possible to add an option to just format the ext/swap partition and not the fat ?
that would be great :)

Just to upgrade from RA1.0H to RA1.2H I was making way too difficult. I ended up just running one command after holding down Back+Power:fastboot flash recovery recovery-RAv1.2.1H.img
sending 'recovery' (3326 KB)... OKAY
writing 'recovery'... OKAY
Perfect.

So I managed to get my phone rooted using daldroids recovery and rom as described over at theunlockr.com
Everything seems to be smooth. I proceeded to remove daldroids recovery from my SD card and copied over this great one. Moved it to /tools as well and now I'm looking at it.
Q: Why would one formation and partition the sd card with fat32+ext2+swap or just fat32? Like when do you need one and not the other?
Anyhow, I formatted it with fat32+ext2+swap and then created a nandroid backup. I'm about to flash the this great recovery image.
Then I assume when I get to loading the MyHero ROM I simply copy it over to sd card? rename it to update.zip. Jump into recovery mode / wipe data / and apply update.zip? Is that it?

28th August 2009, 05:35 PM
uh oh.
When I tried to flash the recovery image I got some error about signature checking being on and hence it failed and I know when I checked my phone I had SPL-ON.
I saw the post re: SPL2005 Engineering and to apply that update after fastboot. I fastbooted in and applied the update.zip.
Now my phone continues to get stuck on the Rogers/Provider logo and doesn't seem to boot?
ALSO - it seems it won't launch into FASTBOOT mode at all anymore either? I hold down BACK+POWER and I still just get my provider logo and it seems to hang on it?? The only way to get out of my provider splash screen seems to be to pull the battery! HEEEEELP!
ALSO - if I plug in the USB while it's stuck on the provider splash screen - my PC seems to detect a USB connection but it's an "Unknown Device" :(
am I completely bricked? :( I have nandroid backups on the sd card which I also copied locally but it seems pointless if I can't get into fastboot? :(
*UPDATE*: PHEW! After scouring the internet for help, I found a post where someone said to turn the phone off, plug in USB and then power it on normally. Provider splash still came up and was stuck on it, but the top left corner said FASTBOOT USB in red. I was able to still execute fastboot cmds from prompt and after flashing the boot images w/ my nandroid backup everything works again - including having the proper 2005 SPL now. Just upgraded to the MyHero ROM.

Hey guys, I just switch from the cyan recovery img and it's great, love it. The only suggestion I have is that it would be nice to be able to enable usb in case we don't have a card reader near by. On Cyan's you did it via recovery console but obviously we can't do it here.
Thanks

I'm sorry for a noob question, probably, and perhaps in not exactly the right thread as well, but I'm trying to make some sense of this SPL and radio stuff for days and even though I'm not exactly HW noob, the more I read, the more confused I in fact become. It seems to me there's a lot of contradicting info available here in the forums.
First, I've got the 32A european HTC branded Magic:
PVT 32A SHIP S-ON H
HBOOT-1.33.0009 (SAPP10000)
CPLD-12
RADIO-3.22.20.17

Now, when I look at the very first post by Amon_RA, it says in big red letters "Make sure your phone is rooted and that you are using an engineerings SPL!". Also, a few pages into this thread, there's this:
However, when I rooted my phone a few weeks back, I used Amon_RA recovery 1.2.0 - the latest at the time - without flashing it permanently to make nandroid backup of the unrooted phone and then to apply the necessary patches to root my phone succesfuly. Then I flashed the Amon_RA recovery without any problems directly into the phone and been using it since, even did some nandroid backups and restores without any problems at all. Should this even be possible without the engineering SPL (which I figure I don't have, it being .0009 and S-ON)? If I understood the SPL info correctly, it shouldn't, but I was still able to do it...
And if I may venture even more off topic (sorry about that, really...), can I perhaps try to flash some custom ROM for 32A without the risk of bricking the device? Am I right in assuming that pretty much the only way to brick the phone is to start messing with radio and SPL (which is necessary for Hero ROM, I take it?)
Thanks for any clarifications and once again, I'm sorry if I'm a bit off-topic here. If someone can direct me to some clear info on the issues, I'll gladly take that, but as I've said, most of the informations I've dug out the past few days (and weeks, actually) only deepen my confusion.
Oh, and Amon_RA, thanks for your AMAZING recovery, it rocks! I'll definitely buy you some Redbull soon ;)
I did brick my first 32b by using the wrong SPL.

I have met some problem in this recovery.
In recovery mode, sometimes I can't find the files under /system and /sdcard. When I use adb push file from PC to sdcard. The PC side always shows ok, but the file is not on sdcard. And I also can't access "su" in recovery mode. Everything is ok when I am not in recovery mode.
I am not sure this problem is related with this recovery, I also update my SPL to 2010 recently.

The reason you can't access /system or /sdcard is because the filesystems are not yet mounted. This is also the reason that pushing files doesn't actually put the files where you want them. The data gets transferred but instead of the output getting stored it sort of just goes into a black whole... to fix it is easy though, you just have to type 'mount -a' from your adb shell to remount all the filesystems.

Thanks, I will try it tomorrow. But sometimes I can see other files on the SDCARD but can not see the file which I pushed. Is it related with mount?

Any plans on adding a "console" feature as well as "Parted" for us to enter the console and format the SD card ourselves?
The reason I ask is on the 32B board I find that 96MB of Swap work better than 32MB. And with the format option in your recovery, it only does 32MB. Where if we had access to something like "Parted", we could format however we wish.
EDIT: Ok, I'm an idiot... I totally forgot about the myTouch not having a physical keyboard....
BUT... could you ADD an option to your recovery that formatted 96MB for swap?
Are there any issues in using my Dream with Cynogen's to format the card using "parted" and then placing this card into the myTouch?

I enabled adb in recovery mode so you can just connect your PC via usb and use adb shell. From there you can use parted and all the other binaries and scripts... they are all there, no need for cyanogen's recovery.

Hi Aman-RA,
I unrooted my HTC Magic ( Airtel India 32 A) using acidburn's thread. Which intern turned my 1.33.0010 to 1.33.2010 and etc...
Now, as per the guidelines, I took a nandroid backup. Is there anyway to revert me phone to 1.33.0010 + original ROM?
Thanks,

PS: looks like HTC India is going to release a new rom with google apps. As I am not interested with the fancy UI and I am interested to use a pure ION to develop my Android applications.

You need to run the fix persmissions script directly from adb ;)
So start an adb shell and run it.

I see that HBOOT-1.33.0004 (SAPP10000) : Sapphire PVT 32B SHIP S-ON G : CPLD-10 (Voldafone NL + UK + Australia)
but i have H not a G and is from Vodafone UK with Google branding on the back
I know its got PVT 32B but was not sure which one because of the letters
RAv1.0H : Use this image if your Magic is HTC branded (PVT 32A board)
RAv1.0G : Use this image if your Magic is Google branded (PVT 32B board)
so i know i have a H so i fastboot the RAv1.0H (Locks on Vodafone logo)
so i now know that even though i got a H i fastboot with RAv1.0G and works fine
working great now and thanks, just letting people know
B
This same thing happened to me.
I rooted my Magic (UK Vodafone, PVT 32B), without problems using instructions in the Wiki. Then went on to change the SPL.. The one mentioned in Wiki, Haykuro's update did not work, so I looked for another, and installed an SPL 1.33.2009.
Before I installed an engineering SPL HBOOT-1.33.2009, the device had HBOOT-1.33.0004 (shipped). The shipped one said it was G, but 1.33.2009 now says it is H.
I wonder if any of the pros around here could clarify why exactly this happened, and what it means... Sorry, I have been reading for so long now, that all the information is messed up in my head.
Now (finally), the G version of the recovery.img is flashed into my phone and running smoothly. Made a few backups along the way, and one final one upon the installation of the RAv1.2.1 recovery.
If I'm not mistaken, the next step for me now would be to flash a custom ROM, I think I've done all the neccessary steps to be able to finally do that.
My point is to try and get back some of the features disabled by Vodafone, like voice control, if that's even possible. If anyone cares to comment on this, it will be much appreciated.
Regards to all, and thanks for your great help! :)

Not that i'm an expert.......but it gives you the ability to load a different recovery menu to your phone
(so you don't have to connect your phone to a computer every time you want to try out a different ROM)
and probably alot more i have no clue about
(cut/past from original post)
All this, WITHOUT using a computer/PC. At the moment you can also do it, but only WITH a computer/PC
# root
# full ADB access in recovery mode
# Partition your SD directly from the menu! (500MB Ext2, 32MB Swap, remaining Fat32)
# Repair ext filesystem, convert ext2 to ext3, fix package mismatches, move apps2SD directly from the menu!
# Flash ANY .zip from your SD - by krut0n
# 51dusty's sdparted v0.5 util *NEW
# Loads of scrips and binaries from Cyanogen's v1.4 dream recovery
# Nandroid v2.2 backup and restore
# Busybox
# Green colored menu with a nice HTC logo

This is incorrect, an engineerings SPL is not a reversed engineered stock SPL, it's an SPL that is used by android engineers/testers/etc...

One obvious fact is that you can flash a different recovery module (like Amon_RAs for example). I found that I couldn't flash it, unless I flashed an engineering SPL first. Maybe it has to do with the fact that the shipped SPLs have "S ON" (I've read that the "S" means Security), but engineering SPLs swith it off, e.g. my SPL now says "S-OFF", which allows me to flash different recovery modules. The advantage of a custom recovery is (as it was mentioned here before) that we are able to perform a set of actions, like nandroid backups, or partitioning for instance, which are not there in the original recovery module...and so on...:)

Your issue is NOT related to this recovery so this question belongs in the general forum. Anyways... you're clearly having a driver issue.
Try this :
1. Make sure your phone is not connected via usb
2. Download USBdeview (http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usbdeview.zip) and run it as admin (it's very important to run it as admin otherwise you will be unable to uninstall!).
3. Uninstall all drivers that mention Android in the device name or description.
4. Make sure that USB debugging is enabled in your phone (Settings - Applications - Development - USB debugging).
5. Connect your phone via usb.
6. Windows will now look for drivers, point it to the sdk drivers and make sure it uses those.
7. Check with "adb devices" to see if your phone listed.

Seen it asked once before but I might have missed the answer is there anyway we can edit the .img to allow us to have a 96mb linux-swap when choosing the "format sd fat32/ext2/l-s" option?
Also is it safe to install over cyan's 1.4 recovery thingy?
And lastly can it be installed via the "one-click" recovery program much you would have to with a 32a recovery image? By typing the file's location into the open field?
Has anyone tired these scenarios and what were your results? Thanks. Just looking to fill in the gaps and learn from your successes, hoping for, or your folly, sorry if so.

Can nandroid backup/restore ext2 partition or only fat32?
I have restore a rom with ap2sd and programs installed i can't see
AFAIK nandroid does not backup the contents of your SD card. It backs up the contents of your DEVICE to the SDCARD fat32 partition. If you wish to backup the contents of the ext2/3 partition.
Backup
adb pull /system/sd/ <some-path>\sdbackup
Restore
adb push <some-path>\sdbackup /system/sd
Learned this from the sdparted (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=543985) thread linked in the OP

Dear All,
First of all congrats to everybody who is participating to this effort and as far as i can i see u actually managed to stabilize the version. As you can see its my first post and certainly not my last one :). I am posting coz i decided to ask for help since ive tried loads of things and i got till the "source" but still, till now, i haven't managed to njoy the pleasure of having Hero Rom on Magic :(.
I followed by heart what is written about flashing and everything went fine. Probably i am missing something out.Lets be more specific. Here's what i have as for the device itself (through fastboot nfo) and below what i have done so far and its not working.
Magic Specs:
SAPPHIRE PVT 32B SHIP S-OFF H ** ---> Is this normal?? Coz thats exactly what i get, meaning 32B being H
HBOOT-1.33.0009 (SAPP10000)
CLPD-7
RADIO -3.22.20.17

** Though don't question urself about the SHIP S-OFF.What i have, is fully working device but was meant for beta testing purposes prior to its release on the market.I dunno if this is causing the problem but i bet u'll be able to have a better overview of my prob by having a look on what i tried. So....
Process i have followed
1) Download SDK 1.5 r3 -> Done
3) Downloaded Recovery ROM (recovery-RAv1.2.1H.img)-> Done
4) Placed Recovery ROM into Tools folder on SDK-> Done
5) Downloaded Fatality ROM, renamed to update.zip, placed to SD-> Done
6) Attach phone through USB, load on fastboot mode (back button+power),run SDK through command prompt on windows, loaded to folder Tools, execute the "fastboot devices" command, phone has been reconed, and then executed the "fastboot boot recovery-RAv1.2.1H.img"-> Done
7) While in in the recovery ROM menu, wiped data, formated SD, scrolled to Apply sdcard:update.zip, ROM loaded successfully as promted-> Done
8) Selected the Reboot system now option and click, rebooted-> Freezed and stays there showin HTC Magic logo screen without loading at all even if i let the device for half an hour to load.
So, could u plz tell me what have i done wrong and i didn't managed to make it work at the end? Is there any step i skipped?I even tried ROM for B version of Qteknology's Hero port, nothing worked out.
In a completeley weird way its just doesn't accept any G's Recovery ROMs, neither the latest nor the old ones. I mean i try to place a Recover G ROM, and when it reboots in order to get me to the Recovery Menu, its frezzes on HTC Magic logo. Its working smoooothly (meaning i can manage to get to the Recovery Menu) ONLY with H's ROMs!!!.:eek: Is that normal??:confused::confused: I just don't think so. Now i am confused. Anyone any ideas?:confused:
Thanks in advance guys and any help will be much appreciated!

7. Check with "adb devices" to see if your phone listed.
this work perfectly for me...thanks amon. now just have to learn adb.

you dont need a console- 2 ways to do it- the easiest is just boot into recovery. scroll down tto where it says Format SD: Fat32 + ext2 + swap
click the trackball and wait for it to happen.
other way is to use sdparted via adb when in recovery- adb remount, adb shell then sdparted (followed by any extra instructions you need- see sdparted thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=543985

I put the recovery file into the tools folder of SDK but it is not working
where do i put the recovery file after installation?
It also says that a need to flash a new SPL, but to do this i need a recovery?
#1 Download the SPL of your choice and copy it to the root of your SD-card.
#2 Download the appropriate recovery here
#3 Boot in fastboot mode
I chase the 2004, saved it
It says to send it to the root of my SD card. Where exactly is this?

Hey bro. I tried doing everything you said because i was doing that previously. its not working. I took my sdcard out put a different one and still said error: run sdtools via adb. I even tried formatting. Flashing and re-flashing and still nothing.
I manually did my own format swap so i am back to cnaygoens 1.4. sorry for my typos lol. BUT I WANT THIS AMON RECOVERY. ITS BETTER :(. PLEASE AMON OR ANYONE ELSE. MORE HELPP!!!
btw bro, he does mention console loook:
to run from computer:
1. download sdparted.txt below to computer
2. connect g1 via usb
3. boot into cm-recovery-v1.4, goto console(alt-x)
4. at your windows cmd prompt type: adb push /path-to/sdparted.txt /sbin/sdparted
5. then type: adb shell chmod 755 /sbin/sdparted.
6. to run type adb shell and hit enter.
7. you can now run script (ie. sdparted -efs ext4).

Yeah he did say console because he is referring to the g1. To do the same thing with amonra you boot I.to his recovery and then from your pc type adb remount and once remounted type adb shell and effectively you are in console. Type your commands from inside this adb shell.

the root of your sd card means put it straight onto the card. not inside any folders etc, so that when you first open your card, the file is there.
you don't have to browse to find it.
when you open a command prompt, try navigating to the tools directory before you run the fastboot command.
does adb detect your phone? type adb devices into the command prompt. it should return list of devices attached if it lists a device then it can see you phone. if it lists no device then it cannot.

when you type in adb shell it comes up with the # prompt. then just type sdparted and hit enter- this will give you the default for sdparted (I think it is 500mb ext2, 32mb swap, and rest Fat32). to switch to ext3 later use the recovery. sdtools is Amon_RA's version of sdparted he had before sdparted came out.

Can someone let me know the steps to just upgrade my MyTouch from RAv1.20G to RAv 1.21G? I have been looking through posts and can't seem to find an easy upgrade path. I have tried the fastboot method, but I keep getting "Waiting for Device". Is there an easy method of upgrade that uses the same type of app as Recovery Flasher? I wouldn't think it would be too hard for an app to do the upgrades rather than having to use fastboot. My MyTouch is already rooted, but it sounds like to also use Fastboot my SPL has to be updated which I haven't had to do in the past to root the phone. Can someone try and explain a simple method to get updated to RAv1.21G? Thanks

Guys, help :(
I did "fastboot boot recovery-RAv1.2.1G.img" without realizing that I'm not using Engineering SPL.
My device is Google Ion, and I think I'm still using HBOOT-1.33.3004 (the original one).
WHen I tried to do this to replace CM 1.4, the screen just went blank and stuck there for so long. After more than 20 minutes, I did "adb shell" and do "reboot". My phone can't be started and stuck on the Google I/O logo a couple of times, so I tried to go to recovery, and it goes to CM 1.4 recovery screen. I hit reboot, and my phone is back to normal. But now, it got "Removed SD Card" notification.
I tried to reinsert, reboot, wipe, 'fix_permissions', ums_enable, look at fstab, mount through adb on recovery mode, and still failed to go anywhere. My output when I do mount on adb shell:
# mount
mount
rootfs on / type rootfs (ro)
tmpfs on /dev type tmpfs (rw,mode=755)
devpts on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,mode=600)
proc on /proc type proc (rw)
sysfs on /sys type sysfs (rw)
tmpfs on /sqlite_stmt_journals type tmpfs (rw,size=4096k)
/dev/block/mtdblock3 on /system type yaffs2 (ro)
/dev/block/loop0 on /system/modules type squashfs (ro)
/dev/block/loop1 on /system/xbin type squashfs (ro)
/dev/block/mtdblock5 on /data type yaffs2 (rw,nodev)
/dev/block/mtdblock4 on /cache type yaffs2 (rw,nosuid,nodev)
Notice no "/dev/block/mmcblk0" there. I tried 'parted' and it gives me:
# parted /dev/block/mmcblk0
parted /dev/block/mmcblk0
Error: Could not stat device /dev/block/mmcblk0 - No such file or directory.
Retry/Cancel?
So again.. guys, help? :(

I have a question about the nandroid backups. Is there another thread for nandroid 2.2? or is this the place to ask? I couldn't find nandroid 2.2 thread
I am hoping my splash1 was saved in my original nandroid backup. but when I go to restore it, it doesn't change it back. I think the restore only restores, system.img, data.img, and boot.img, is this correct? I think the splash1 is in the misc.img, but I would like to verify that before I go and try and flash it back and brick my phone...
I have:
system.img
boot.img
cache.img
data.img
recovery.img
misc.img

@ryoojin83:
I'm fairly certain the splash is saved as part of a backup. I just switched between 2 different backups today using nandroid and my splash screen changed back and forth as well.
Question regarding the future of this ROM...
Since fix_permissions.sh is such a common-place task when things go wrong, is there any chance we can get an entry on the recovery menu to run it?
Also, if I read it correctly there is a HTC Hero version of this that has a software keyboard. Any chance of getting a Sapphire 32A version of that going?
Cheers!

Fix permissions is the second last entry on the recovery menu = "Fix Package uid mismatches".

Still on my G1 and using Pimped Out Recovery 1.4, I will be getting a MT3G this Thursday. I had a question, I don't see "Goto console" option on there, anyway that will be available anytime soon? Nice job by the way on it with the auto parted. :) Does it know what size your SD is and partition it to your liking? Is there a screen after clicking on that option?

all pimped out featured, including sdparted can be accessed via adb when in recovery. see sdparted thread for more details but essentially it can be partitioned however you want. tbh i dont think its required for the magic as we have a truckload more memory than the G1 (my magic runs so much faster than my G1)

I was looking over the One-Click root method and noticed them using your RAv1.2.0G. Then I noticed on the top of your post #1 of this thread that you require for the Engineerings SPL to be installed before this. Is this the case for 1.2.1G or 1.2.0G as well? It didn't seem he flashed it with the SPL you require.

This thread was created long before the one-click method was used (so before the security hole in the kernel was found). If you don't use the one-click method you'll need to have an SPL that allows you to flash (or fastboot) a boot image. Most stock SPL's will not allow you to flash or even fastboot a boot image (perfected SPL's will give the error fastboot not allowed).
The SPL is of no importance when you use the oneclick-version, it also doesn't matter which version of recovery you use, they will all work with one-click.
Hope this clarifies things...

There's no other screen which lets you pick the size of your SD card, it will automatically detect the SD card size and will partition 500MB Ext2, 32MB Swap, remaining Fat32.

I was having some trouble earlier with restoring a nandroid boot. I did format the sdcard, but I put the backed up backup in /sdcard/nandroid/originalbackupname/
That should be correct, right? It kept asking me to run nandroid-mobile.sh restore, which I did then did to no avail. That kept saying 'backup not found'. Now, I got it working through just manually doing 'fastboot flash * *.img' commands, but for future reference, what was I doing wrong?

Make sure your phone is rooted and that you are using an SPL which allows you to flash/boot a recovery image!
If you plan to use the one-click (flashrec) method any SPL will do...
Features
root
full ADB access in recovery mode
Partition your SD directly from the menu! (500MB Ext2, 32MB Swap, remaining Fat32)
Repair ext filesystem, convert ext2 to ext3, fix package mismatches, move apps2SD directly from the menu!
Flash ANY .zip from your SD - by krut0n
51dusty's sdparted v0.5 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=543985) util *NEW
Loads of scrips and binaries from Cyanogen's v1.4 dream recovery
Nandroid v2.2 backup and restore
Busybox
Green colored menu with a nice HTC logo ;)
See detailed changelog for more details!
Download
Use the H/G version if your Magic is HTC branded (PVT 32A board)/Google branded (PVT 32B board, or if you have an HTC Dream).

Hello Amon_RA I have a really quick but important question (important in regards to myself that is!). I made a nandroid backup, then I wiped my phone, then i partitioned my SD card. Now I'm just curious... do the nandroid backsup sit on my SD card? If so did i just screw myself over? LOL

I am having this EXACT problem, can you please tell me how to restore my back up, because I have no clue how to get past this problem.

sorry mate but you just screwed yourself badly..... you wiped your sd card and thus lost your nandroid once you partitioned your card....
it is a good idea to backup nandroids every now and again on your pc.

Firstly, thanks so much for providing us with this. Having such a fully-featured and stable recovery image to fall back upon makes me feel so much safer playing with different ROMs.
Any chance we can get the full filename we are about to flash displayed on that final "press SEND to confirm" screen? The finicky nature of that stupid trackball makes me sometimes wonder which file I actually had selected when I managed to press it in. When I click to choose the file, I've noticed sometimes that I can't help but move the selection up or down accidentally.

Hi all, was wondering if I could get some assistance with making a Nandroid backup. I've never been able to make one successfully, always ending up with 'Backup not performed!' Seems everyone else who's had this was just due to lack of space, but I've so far tried;
* Eng SPLs .2004 and .2010
* 2 microSDs (both with >2Gb free)
* Different recovery versions
* Different ROMs
Anyone got any other suggestions? Not a big deal but it's been bothering me for yonks.

@Unimaginative: have you tried re-inserting the microSD card while in the recovery mode? I had an issue a while ago where the card wasn't being recognised properly unless I tried that. Might be best to start with it out, and plug it in once recovery has booted up.

if you have a perfected spl, but still have a nandroid of your factory rom, nandroid back to it, and then just use recovery flasher to do it.
i didnt want to goof around with flashing spl's so i just did that and it works.
however, if you nandroid back, then you get the first recovery back..
so i found another way:
adb shell
#flash_image recovery /location/blah.img
this works on perfected spl.

Change-log :
v1.2.3
Aligned the Magic version with the Dream version.
Recompiled 32A kernel to support squashfs

Replaced the GREEN-key by the HOME-key for confirmation
Removed the menu title to create more space
Added Wipe SD:Dalvik-cache
Added Rotate fix
Removed "Move apps to SD" because it's automatically implemented by most ROMs already.
Added confirmation before performing a nandroid backup
Set swap back to 32MB instead of 96MB when doing an auto partition SD-card from the menu
Upgraded fix_permissions to v1.31-R3
Added BART v0.9.2
Fixed many bugs (mostly in scripts)

All the sensor calibration data can be found in /data/misc/akmd_set.txt. Unfortunately, the settings are pretty device-specific. I've copied the file from one perfectly functioning phone to one with broken sensors and have certainly noticed different sensor behaviour, but not perfectly correct.
Amon_RA, feel free to verify or not, but I suspect that the "fix sensors" option in the new version of the recovery just deletes the akmd_set.txt file in order to get a new one generated automatically on next boot. The problem is that for some of us, the phone is unable to generate a proper calibration file.
I've been following this issue as closely as I can in this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=559719). If you don't have a backup of your original working settings somewhere, then your only options would be:
- try the "fix sensors" option or manually delete akmd_set.txt
- (illegally?) obtain the Diagnostic SD card image for Sapphire (PM me if you get this please, LOL)
- wait for an official release of HTC Sense UI for Sapphire and see if the Calibration Tool fixes it
- send your handset back for repairs

I've been following this issue as closely as I can in this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=559719). If you don't have a backup of your original working settings somewhere, then your only options would be:
- try the "fix sensors" option or manually delete akmd_set.txt
- (illegally?) obtain the Diagnostic SD card image for Sapphire (PM me if you get this please, LOL)
- wait for an official release of HTC Sense UI for Sapphire and see if the Calibration Tool fixes it
- send your handset back for repairs
thanks for the update. i am on my ROM with a working sensor. so if i get this right, i just have to adb pull the akmd_set.txt the flash a new rom and adb push the file back?
testing this now.
edit : yeah. pushing that file works. its great :)

Change-log :
v1.2.3
Aligned the Magic version with the Dream version.
Recompiled 32A kernel to support squashfs
<SNIP>
Fixed many bugs (mostly in scripts)
Excuse back-to-basics question.
I have Vodafone UK Magic (32b), was running happily with CY Recovery 1.4.
I 'upgraded' and flashed the 32b/Dream recovery console 1.2.2, without issue
I then upgraded that and flashed your 1.2.3, again from the Dream thread. [ http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=566669 ]
Seeing you aligned the Magic and Dream versions, the two versions now identical or should I reflash with the one from this thread?

most new ROMs here have fixed the security flaw that allowed the recovery flasher to work. so i think thats the reason it fails.

I started messing around my phone this morning and have gotten a bit stuck. I was trying to flash the recovery console but now when I try to boot into it it just gets stuck at the G1 boot screen. I flashed through the terminal emulator with the following:
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-RA-magic-v1.2.3H.img
... but it never gave me any kind of confirmation, it just went to the next blank line.
Not sure if it is related but after I tried to flash the recovery console I tried to reboot by typing reboot and it says not permited!.
I am able to fastboot ... but I have not ever messed around with that before.
Thanks for any help, I appreciate it!
I am on MLIGN Hero 2.5.3.
UPDATE: I was flashing the wrong version ... flashed G and it worked like a charm. Thanks!

So I flashed the one with the H and got freaked out cuz I would get stuck on the G1 screen. Didn't realize I flashed the wrong one until I read your post.

Hi, I'm having a bit of trouble restoring my phone (magic 32a). I installed an old HTC Hero rom, which worked fine, but was a bit slow. I then tried to update to a newer one, but I didn't re-flash the phone, which may have been the problem. Then the phone got stuck in a boot cycle: It would show the magic logo, then the hero one, and play a sound, and then the screen would go black, and then back to the hero logo.
Unfortunately, I accidentally also deleted my nandroid backup. I tried to download a backup from the front page of the topic, and put it in the nandroid folder, but I get an error message when I try to use it. The same happens when I try to load update.zip - Error, no signature (or something along those lines)
I tried to use fastboot and recovery (on Ubuntu 9.10) but I must be doing something wrong, as I only get error messages.
BTW, I set up fastboot using the instructions at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=537508 and am using the latest recovery image from here, as well as the myhero 1.1.3 rom named update.zip
[edit] fastboot is detecting the device
[edit 2] I put the recovery image in the folder /home/qakgob/android-sdk-linux_x86-1.5_r3/tools which is where the fastboot program is stored. When I use the command /home/qakgob/android-sdk-linux_x86-1.5_r3/tools/fastboot devices I get my phone listed. When I type /home/qakgob/android-sdk-linux_x86-1.5_r3/tools/fastboot flash recovery recovery-RA-magic-v1.2.3H.img however, I get the message error: cannot load 'recovery-RA-magic-v1.2.3H.img'

what i understand is you don't need to flash the recovery image in order to flash ROM.
it should be like this to flash a rom(at least on XP)
1. connect your phone to your computer to backup whatever you want,
2. copy your desired rom to sdcard if u don't need to re-partition your sdcard.
3. power off your phone,
4. press back+power (boot your phone into fast boot)
5. from your pc's cmd or terminal,
fastboot boot recovery-RA-magic-v1.2.3H.img (boot into recovery mode)
6. wipe n flash your desired rom (if you have re-partitioned your sdcard, turn on your sdcard and copy the rom to sdcard and flash it)
7. reboot
that's all.
for flashing the recovery image into your phone permanently is to go to recovery mode by pressing home+power rather than booting from pc.
cheers,
thihaz

Thanks for the recovery img 1.2.3G it works great. changed my spl to .2005 before and then used the the CM Recovery Flasher 1.4 to flash your recovery image. ====by changing your recovery image name to cm-recovery-1.4.img then placing it to the root of the sd card and in the recovery flasher app i back up the img then typed
/sdcard/cm-recovery-1.4.img & selected flash custom recovery image (if you type the wrong name you get some kind of error)
needless to say im loveing the convert ext2 to ext 3 & usb mass storage = on/off save alot of time..

Amon_RA, thank you again for your hard work.. Really appreciated.
Use the H/G version if your Magic is HTC branded (PVT 32A board)/Google branded (PVT 32B board, or if you have an HTC Dream).
Following a "wrong" sappimg.nb0 restore from a tutorial somewhere on the web, It seems it installed me a perfected SPL. I follow then your "fix perfected SPL" tutorial, and so far, so good. However, I have a PVT 32B, but after the "fix perfected", the G recovery did not work. I had to use the H one.
Why that ?
From the fix tutorial, I used ROM v2.53.707.2

a suggestion if you update the recovery (i don't know if it is possible):
When we select the restore nandroid option we should be able to select the nandroid backup to be restored. Currently we have to use adb to select a specific backup but there are cases when you don't have a computer near you so the option to select a specific nandroid backup in the recovery would be great.

Some of my thoughts for the new update:
There is new BART script (1.0.0)
And also new fix_permissions script (2.03, its called beta but ive found it stable)
HTC wallpaper is hmm... ugly? Imo black screen would be best option for background.
Option to convert ext3 to ext4 in main menu (like option to convert ext2->ext3, and yes it can be done from More Utilities, but it could be way easier if we have this option in main menu)
Thanks.

Just flashed to 1.2.3H on my 32A Magic and for some reason every choice in the menu doesn't work. Every time it asks for Home to continue, it aborts even if I do push Home, whether it's flashing, backing up nandroid, updating from .zip, formatting SD to ext2 and so forth. also i know the dream has a keyboard so it has console provided in recovery, but can console also be provided for us magics that allows for the virtual keyboard? or is that limation? itll be very useful since we can still do commands without having to be at a computer to use usb for adb/fastboot.

Ok, at the risk of sounding very stupid:
How do I backup/store/restore multiple Nandroid Roms with the Amon's v1.3.2? When I go to select a restore, I only see one file.
Thanks y'all
