yes i no i have to remove it, my question is how do it do it via terminal. i no how to do with fastboot like it mentions in the first post, but like i said, i cannot get usb working. my only option is via terminal. =\
Download the Better terminal app from market,
mount, put the file on the root of your SD card, unmount
Open better terminal and enter:
$su ((if prompt opens say allow))
#flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-RA-magic-v1.3.2G.img
Worked for me, hope it does for you as well

thanks, but please everyone read my question. i am asking how to REMOVE/ERASE the recovery via terminal. I know how to flash already. I need to erase because I am getting the no space error.
EDIT: ok now i just try flashing it again and it works now. whew. testing it now hope all the commands work.

Why can't I type numbers into my terminal? I press the number, but nothing shows up! :'(
the file looks like this - recovery-RA-magic-v1.3.2G.img
rename it to this - recovery-RA-magic.img
then use the terminal to flash, i had the same problem not being able to type the numbers but it works now :) with it renamed.

My card has been partition. Any help will be appriciated. Thank You.

That problem was solved in v1.3.2, you are still using v1.3.1..
Also make sure that you don't restore an old nandroid backup which restores an older recovery (like v1.3.1).
When you boot in recovery mode it should read v1.3.2!

That option in v1.2.2 only moves the apps to ext, it doesn't do anything more.
If you want to use apps2sd (so actually use the apps you moved) you'll need to have a rom that supports it. Check with your rom dev how to do this.

- Restoring an older backup and reflashing the recovery will work ;)
- The name of the backupfolders are set by the Nandroid script, I didn't update the script, I just provided and interface for it. The problem is that the Magic doesn't have a keyboard so it's not easy to give a rom a name...

Fstab is a file, not a folder. This file has the info of what is going to be mounted and where.
Probably the same problem as Burnomatic describes.
The sdcard cant be reached by the phone if its mounted by the computer.

I was having trouble flashing roms so I used a vodafone uk nandroid image and now I have lost root access.
Checking on my fastboot, it has changed from:
PVT 32B ship s-on G
to:
PVT 32B eng s-off H
Presumably because I have flashed crios eng spl.
So my question is, "s-off H" is found on 32A HTC branded devices, and my phone is a 32B Google branded. So what amon ra recovery should I use?
im assuming because its a 32B board i should use G and not H.
Am I correct.

Well if you look here at amon's instructions to root the mt3g...
he has you switch your phone from "G" to "H" and when you do that he has you load his "H" recovery even though the mt3g is "G"
then he has you go back to "G" and after you do that he has you using his "G" version

If you are stuck with an SPL that prevents flashboot from working, you should try seeing if flashrec works for you. Alot of the official ROM updates are still vulnerable to the Bluetooth bug it exploits to flash the phone. Try to flash the earliest official ROM update you can find.

is there any danger of bricking my phone if I try flashrec and then either of amon ra's new recovery images?

The H or G in the SPL doesn't matter, it's not that an SPL from a 32A is always with an H or so. You can safely ignore the H or G in the SPL, they have absolutely no influence whatsoever as far as I know.

I had trouble flashing the latest recovery image. I kept getting "out of memory" errors. Then I checked the space in /system using df, and discovered I only had 400 kb free! Given that I had an earlier version of the recovery image previously installed, I don't understand how this could have occurred. Could it be that the installation of the latest MyHero ROM with SenseUI took up so much room that the recovery image got punted after installation?
Anyway after some investigation I found some language files I could move to the SD card (e.g. WP_0414RUS.db) and that eventually freed up 4 MB. The installation still failed (for some reason I can't use fastboot to flash the recovery image as it fails with a copy-not-allowed error), but... I found a wiki that described that if you put recovery.img in /system, on each boot it will be flashed into the recovery partition in /dev/mtd1. So I mounted my device and copied the latest recovery.img into /system, and then just rebooted.
Presto! Thanks Amon_RA for making this image!

I seem to have a slight problem with this recovery.
It seems when I am in recovery mode (as in holding home+power) and I come to my nice recovery screen I want to use adb but I always get errors and problems. For example I'll try to do adb remount and it'll say error. Also I can't push/pull either.
I found a solution(or work around), well a fix really but it's tedious and I don't really understand what the problem is, but the only way to ensure my adb commands work is to:
adb shell
mount -a
Wait till it fails, it will hang for a minute before it responds. Then type in:
exit
adb remount
Now I can use adb without errors or problems, I really don't know why. Any ideas?

Give the recovery some time to fully boot before using "adb shell".

It depends on which ROM you are running.
In newer ROM versions the the security exploit that flashrec uses will not work anymore.

Hello Amon_Ra, (or anyone else who can do it :])
I was wondering if it would be possible for you to edit my boot.img for me to get root like you did for that gentleman on page 5 of this thread. I've tried to follow a tutorial on how to do it, but was unsuccessful.
I enjoy the simplicity of the rom that's on it now and would like to get SuperUser access in order to get rid of some applications.
I am using a 32A HTC Branded Rogers Magic, and my Nandroid backup can be found at:

Okay, so I am pretty new to all of this. But I have successfully flashed dozens of custom ROMs. No bricked phone or anything of that nature. I have the mt3g. So it's a 32B board of course. I have RA-dream-v1.2.3 recovery image. I guess I wasn't paying attention when I flashed it on the first time. It has worked so far. I have tried many times, through adb to put this new recovery image on. I follow all the steps, get no error messages. But when I reboot into recovery it still has the old recovery image. Could this be because I have a dream recovery image? If so, is there a way to correct this? Or could there be some other reason why the image won't apply? Any help is appreciated.

The fact that you have a dream recovery doesn't matter.
-Which rom do you have?
-Could it be that your current rom flashes a recovery.img located in system every time you boot?
-Did you restore any old nandroid backups (which might include an old recovery image)?
1. Make sure that there's no recovery.img in /system or /data
2. fastboot erase recovery (so you are sure that the old one is gone)
3. fastboot flash recovery recovery-RA-magic-v1.3.2G.img
4. boot into recovery

start the terminal app

#mount -a
#flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-RA-magic-v1.3.2H.img
to make a recovery file, but it won't work

mount : cannot read /etc/fstab : no such file or directory
can anyone help explain what's wrong?

flashrec works by exploiting a Bluetooth-related vulnerability. I think it's safe to say that none of the custom ROMs found here are vulnerable, so flashrec won't work with them.
However, if you currently have an old official ROM from HTC installed on your phone, then there's a good chance it'll work. Most official update ROMs from your carrier or manufacturer released before August 2009 can allow flashrec to work.
While it's incredibly convenient for this one specific case, it's really disappointing that the community can fix and patch in moments what is still probably broken on lots of factory and official update ROMs out there.

Install
There are several ways to install a custom recovery, choose the one that suits you most (I probably forgot a few).
Use the H/G version if your Magic is HTC branded (PVT 32A board)/Google branded (PVT 32B board).
Just ignore the errors you get with the "mount -a" command, those are normal.

Also, will this recovery image work for all android phones? Or are there any limitations to it?
Cheers,
Any engineerings bootloader will work, just be really carefull when flashing a new one, make sure you are flashing the right one for your phone! So don't flash a dream spl to a magic etc... that will brick your phone.
This recovery image only works for the HTC magic, both the 32A and 32B version (so check which one you have). It will NOT work on other Android phones. I've created some specific recoveries for other phones (check hero, heroc, dream section of xda for those).

Amon_Ra said on twitter that he was waiting on Dream users to report bugs. He said there were a few. I haven't had a MyTouch for long, but did he used to release them Sapphire ones first? Not complaining just knew I didn't know about it on the Dream forum for a long time.

Hi all,
first thanks for all the infos, soft and tutorial out on this site.
And despite all of them I encounter a pb I did not manage to solve :p
Got a Magic SFR (France) unlocked, working in Vietnam on Vinaphone.
Got it root through fast boot and sdk using this img http://wiki.smartphonefrance.info/GetFile.aspx?File=root-htcmagic%2fboot-magic-donut-root.zip
to get throught cmd to set up su access.
Looks like my phone is rooted, as I can get su related info through cmd and terminal.
Pbs starts now. Wanted to flash Amon Ra 1.3.2. via terminal, but every time I got the following: "flash_recovery not found"
And yes I did type in the right command and the right image name.
Eventually I decided to flash via fast boot. I first booted on amon ra image via fast boot usb to flash an engineering spl (1.33... 2005). Worked like a charm.
I then used fast boot again to falsh Amon Ra recovery (1.3.2. magic, google branded. the same I used to flash the spl). Worked like a charm. At least my computer said so.
Unfortunately I can not restart the phone on recovery mode, he got stuck on the <!> screen. I reflashed it, still the same.
Any idea?

Pbs starts now. Wanted to flash Amon Ra 1.3.2. via terminal, but every time I got the following: "flash_recovery not found"
And yes I did type in the right command and the right image name.
The name of the binary is flash_image, not flash_recovery... so enter :
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-RA-magic-v1.3.2G.img
Unfortunately I can not restart the phone on recovery mode, he got stuck on the <!> screen. I reflashed it, still the same.
First try to fastboot boot the recovery and see if that works :
fastboot boot recovery-RA-magic-v1.3.2G.img
If you can boot the recovery you can permanently flash it :
fastboot erase recovery
fastboot erase cache
fastboot flash recovery recovery-RA-magic-v1.3.2G.img
Ps : Make sure that your current rom isn't flashing a recovery.img at boot. Check your /system if there isn't a recovery.img in it.

Tks for the prompt answer.
I can fastboot boot the recovery img. Thats actually how I flashed the spl.
I then flashed it by:
fastboot erase recovery
fastboot flash recovery recovery-RA-magic-v1.3.2G.img
And I got stuck on the <!> when starting my phone with off+home
i just did it again, including erase cache as you suggest. Same result.
I do have a file named "recovery-from-boot" in my system. Should i delete it?
Cheers, much appreciated

Can you do :

What does that give as output?

su
to get # and not $, otherwise I got permission denied.
then after entering su,

Ok found this in another thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=568171
Quote:
ah ... i think the problem is that the recovery is replaced with each reboot.
first do:
adb root
adb remount
adb shell
cat /system/etc/install-recovery.sh > /system/etc/install-recovery.sh.disabled
rm /system/etc/install-recovery.sh
cat /system/recovery-from-boot.p > /system/recovery-from-boot.p.disabled
rm /system/recovery-from-boot.p
Flash a recovery-image like before ...
Does that seem to apply to my case too?

@sipvn :
grep is not working because you didn't install busybox..
Do a cat of you init.rc and check if any install-recovery script or flash_image recovery is loaded at boot.

(im a big noob) couldnt figure how to install the busybox properly, so I flashed cyanogenmod 4.2.5 via fast boot loading your recovery.
still have the same pb (sutcked on the <!> windows) but this time busybox is installed and when I do a cat of the init.rc I get:
service_flash recovery /system/bin/flash_image -d recovery /data/recovery.img
Guess that the script you were spking of, right?

Yes, this means that your rom will try to flash a recovery.img located at /data when it boots.
Just rename my recovery to recovery.img, copy it to /data and reboot your phone. If the flash was successful the recovery.img file should be gone from /data (that's what the -d parameter is for) and you should be able to boot into recovery.
If you still get the <!> window you should try to re-download the recovery image, maybe the image got currupted while downloading (check md5sum to be sure).

Just installed recovery-RA-magic-v1.3.2H.img (http://rapidshare.com/files/307399485/recovery-RA-magic-v1.3.2H.img) and damn that was a sweaty experience!
1st attempt doing this using the terminal method (better terminal) something went wrong and i couldn't get into recovery mode
Took out the battery to see if i could load the OS but no problems getting android running :)
Then i couldn't get adb to list my device to try that method
Went to fastboot to see if i could get that method to work even though i don't have engineerings SPL and no luck connecting fastboot
Booted back into android and tried to use flashrec but backup failed
And finally i decided to give the terminal another go and got through with plenty of errors and though damn the same thing happens again :(
But powered down the phone to see if it worked and booted into RA-magic-v1.3.2 recover
Enough playing around with my mobile this evening :D

Change-log :
v1.5.0
- Updated Nandroid to v2.2.1 (ext support!).
- Added a "Nand + ext backup" menu-item.
- Nandroid and BART menu items will not backup or restore the recovery partition by default.
- Updated init.rc to only load /sbin in PATH.
- Removed the loading cramfs and sqf filesystems from fstab.
- Added an unmount script that is called at the start of most scripts.
- Updated the BKMO-utility script to it doesn't backup/restore the recovery partition + changed the return to recovery command.
- Changed the item select key to CALL ANSWER-key instead of HOME-key. The HOME-key was conflicting other operations.
- Added "Other" sub-menu :
- Moved "fix apk uid mismatches"-item from main menu to "Other" sub-menu.
- Added "Move apps+dalv to SD"-item.
- Added "Move recovery.log to SD"-item (Check this log if you want to see what is going wrong).
- Fixed the Nandroid restore menu; an error message is now displayed when no nandroid backup or device-id was found (instead of showing an empty menu).
- Removed flash submenu and "Apply sdcard:update.zip" item, because we already have "Apply sdcard:choose zip".
- Removed "Wipe cache partition" item, wipe cache is already included in the "Wipe data/factory reset" item.
- Changed UMS-toggle enable behaviour; you can not access the menu while UMS is enabled (avoid mount issues).
- Changed some menu-item labels to make the options more clear.
- Fixed UMS-toggle disable behaviour; files are now refreshed in the menu (sdcard is unmounted).
- Updated the busybox binary to 1.15.2 which has fixes for ash and hush (`trap` handling), dd (fixed handling of I/O errors), find (fix for -follow and symlinks), pidof (corrected recognition of kernel thread names), sed (SEGV), uniq (memory leak), line editing (Ctrl-D works again), build system.
- The busybox binary was :
- statically linked against uclibc (0.9.30)
- configured to preferentially execute busybox applets
- busybox --install -s installs links into /data/local/bin (JF patch)
- mount looks for loop devices at /dev/block/loop (JF patch)
- modprobe and family look for modules in /system/modules (JF patch)
- fixed an issue with vi where it would save a file as just a blank file (JF patch)
- Compiled new kernel : RA-recovery-v1.0:
- enabled "Support for large block devices and files" to fix ext4 issues
- added all modules to /lib/modules in ramdisk
- Updated sdparted script to v0.6

That's what I thought as well, but it says it requires engineerings SPL, and I don't think I have it. I tried to use "Fastboot" a couple of minutes ago but it didn't find the recovery image kind of frustrating.
The easiest method is the "simple reboot" method (no need for a terminal, adb, fastboot, or whatever). Check out the first post for more details.

Changed the name of the image to "recovery.img"
Copied the recovery.img file to my adb folder which for me is c:\android-sdk-windows-1.6_r1\tools
Booted my phone into recovery (Home + Power)
Plugged the phone into my pc.
Ran the following command from the command prompt: adb push recovery.img /data
Then reboot the phone.
Then reboot into recovery and you should be set.
That's it. Hope this helps.

Hello all. I'm new to the forum, actually I just registered. I've been lurking around for a while and finally decided to throw in my two cents. I don't use adb, as I'm not familiar with it yet. I had trouble flashing from terminal. But, for all the other "noobs" like myself that are struggling to get this awesome new recovery image:
Change the name of the file to recovery.img on the root of your sd:
From terminal window (Terminal Emulator, or Better Terminal from the market):
su
cp /sdcard/recovery.img /data/recovery.img
reboot
After it fully reboots, reboot into recovery and VOILA!!
Hope this helps, it worked like a charm for me.

if your gonna use the fastboot method from the first post to it like this:-
Copy recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.5.0H to a location where fastboot can find it.
Boot your phone into fastboot mode (boot while holding BACK)
Connect your phone via usb to your pc/mac/...

i added .img at the end of the above recovery image and it worked. if you read this amon_RA can you edit your first post so people don`t copy and paste(like me) the recovery path into the pc cmd shell and then wonder why it don`t work lol.
just to add this is everything i entered on my pc in cmd shell-make sure your in fastboot mode on your phone.
cd C:\AndroidSDK\tools
fastboot devices
fastboot shell
fastboot erase recovery
fastboot flash recovery recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.5.0G.img
and then it says okay twice and thats it all done.
excellent recovery 1.5 by the way keep up the good work.

cd C:\AndroidSDK\tools
fastboot devices
fastboot shell
fastboot erase recovery
fastboot flash recovery recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.5.0G.img
and then it says okay twice and thats it all done.
excellent recovery 1.5 by the way keep up the good work.
Nice nooby method)))) But you can get it easy, if you know your device.
Turn off the phone, turn on by holding (Back + Power) - phone boots into HBoot
At the first 4-5 strings - there is a SPL-info (Information about Second Program Loader - like BIOS at the computer)

to know, what recovery do you need, you must remember these options:
Motherboard of your sapphire/magic/mytg:
32A - htc magics
32B - some (not all) vodafone magics, t-mobile mytouch 3g, all phones with title "with Google" on the back.
for 32A phones - recovery with suffix 'H' - like 1.5.0H
for 32B phones - recovery with suffix 'G' - like 1.5.0G

the G for google has now been replaced with H for htc
how confusing would that be to some lol

Yes. It will confuse everyone. But important option is version of motherboard.
If you have 32B - you can't never change it...
Originally, 32B versions updating through OTA-updates. At last time, OTA updates came with ROM or patch and without SPL.
Some of 32A updates came with new SPL, so we have a small library of these SPLs. As they all came from HTC, so they marked 'H'
You flashed SPL 2005 - it changed G to H, but functionality still same...

Thanks Amon_RA, your recovery is brilliant as ever! I've gotta say, this is much better than 1.3.2, especially because you have merged wipe DATA and CACHE back together. Way to go! Also loving the nandroid w/EXT option, though Bart itself rocks. Redbull coming your way soon ;)
Now that I'm writing already, I've had something strange occur on 1.3.2, while toggling UMS. It somehow renamed my FAT partition to a non-unicode character (single character, but it looks like letter "C" above letter "R"... I cant reproduce it). Looking at the directory structure through Linux shell, my drive was named "?"... In KDE, it's name was this "CR" thing... Kinda weird. I apologize if it has been posted/asked, just thought I'd drop it, wondering if it's a known problem. Thanks again!

you cant do karaduke's way. Your SPL does not allow flashing images.
Do this (ADB method):
1.
adb shell push recovery-ra-1.5.img /data/recovery.img
2. Reboot your phone
or this (from inside CM, through terminal):
1. Copy the recovery to your SD card's root
2. Open terminal and type
1/ $su
2/ #flash_image recovery recovery-RA-1.5.img

You can do the same from inside the CyanogenMod. The point is to copy recovery.img to /data. Then when you reboot it will be automatically flashed.
So, for instance, if your recovery file is on your SD card, named Amon_pimpin_recovery1.5.1.img, do this:
1. Open terminal and type (pay attention to CAsE in Linux!):
cp /sdcard/Amon_pimpin_recovery1.5.1.img /data/recovery.img
2. Reboot your phone
P.S. There is that script (in the second method I wrote) called flash_image. I made a mistake there, I wrote flash_recovery, I just realized.. sorry bout that! But try that one, too.
P.S.S. Update your ADB! ;)

via a simple reboot -> Requires Cyanogen or my RA ROM (other ROMs will probably work too, check init.rc where to put the recovery.img)
Code:
Rename recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.5.1H.img to recovery.img
Copy recovery.img to /data
Reboot fully (the recovery will be flashed automatically)
Reboot to recovery

You current ROM (or the one you are trying to restore) doesn't support APP2SD. This basically means that the ROM doesn't have the /system/sd folder. This is why it is failing, you are trying to restore the ext content to a directory that doesn't exist.

You need to run it right after you got the error, it isn't saved when you reboot.

With more than nandroid backup stored on my sdcard i tried to restore a specific one with the 1.5.1H recovery but it seems to select the wrong one instead of the one i specified. When I moved all the other backups from the nandroid backup dir with only the one i wanted to restore remaining it worked like a charm. I recall some similar problem in earlier versions was this not fixed?

Don't quite get why you guys have problems flashing this, BUT if you need help PM me, and make sure you include the following:
1. Your current recovery
2. SPL information (Soft (stock), Hard, Engineering?)
3. Do you have a working ADB shell?
4. ROM type (Cupcake, Donut, Hero/Sense?)
5. Paste your /system/init.rc
Not all of this is really needed, one 'correct' answer will suffice, but provide as much as you can please. ;)

Greetings, First thank you for your supurb efforts....
I am attempting a Nand + ext backup but it fails with run nandroid-mobile.sh via ADB (basic Nand backup works). The log says "Warning: ext2 specified but unable to mount the ext2 partition". I have an ext3 partition on the SD card and under the impression that A2SD is automatic in my rom. I even tried the virtuial A2SD option so I dont have a clue what the issue is. Any help will be appreciated.

Don't start over just to get the recovery.img ! (unless other issues force a "start from scratch" situation) just follow the TERMINAL option in the OP. I just upgraded from 1.3.2G to 1.5.2G that way. You have several issues :
1. Your data and cache seem to be corrupted in some way. Try erasing them with fastboot after you made a nandroid backup.
2. You're trying to restore CBDMRS12-20091215-2206 which doesn't contain any backup files. Check this folder on your sdcard and make sure it has backup files inside!
3. You're trying to use BART while you don't have an ext partition on your SD card. Why are you trying to do that? Just use nandroid without ext.

I did see that reference about not finding any backup files, but it is incorrect. I have reviewed the folder and all Nandroid backup files are in there. I also tried using 2 other backups, both having the needed backup files, but I got the same error. It seems for some reason the recovery image is not finding the files that are there, but I am able to find and view them all in windows or through ADB.
I have tried a complete wipe prior to the restore, which I believe should also erase the data and cache. Do I need to do this in fastboot instead?

I have figured out how to get into ADB, but am not 100% sure if I am typing the commands right, but it does find the backups. However, after it finds the path I enter, it says "Error: no backups found". Just to make sure, could someone give me the commands I should be typing in to run the nandroid restore via ADB. I have been using this:
nandroid.mobile.sh -r --path /sdcard/HT974P402368/CBDMRS12-20091215-2206
This points directly to the folder containing all the image and MD5 files needed for the backup. Thanks.

I cannot get past this. Anyone else seeing this error message? If it helps, I have root, I'm running CyanogenMod 1.4 recovery, with CyanogenMod 4.2.8 ROM. Board info:
SAPPHIRE PVT 32B SHIP S-ON G

I know nothing about SPLs(i.e. hard, engineering)--perhaps I need to flash a new SPL though? Or should it work with mine? Any help would be super appreciated.
Thanks
Said the same thing on my phone to but it will still flash the recovery image when you follow the steps on the first page

Hey Amon Ra, i have a rogers magic with the perfected spl, i tried the one click rooting method anywayz cause i read it worked for some ppl, well it worked for me also, and i flashed the latest recovery image from amon ra and also wiped and loaded amon ra's 1.6.2 donut rom, everything went perfectly. the thing is lightning wont strike twice cause i cannot seem to use the one click root again and it has gone back to the stock recovery image.
Edit: I still have the recovery image loaded, and the perfect spl, should i just count my blessings or should i attempt to change my spl????

How does flashing a rom have anything to do with converting the ext partition?

Hi all
For some reason I am no longer able to wipe sd:ext or the dalvik from the recovery. It refers me to the console 'adb wipe ext', but how do I do that? I have always used fastboot. Is it possible to handle it that way? or how do I get about doing with adb?
Thanks for a super forum
Best regards
The noob
I'm getting a similar error, only with nandroid restore. Kind of frustrating, any answers?
edit:
Nevermind, seems 1.5.2 fixed it, was on 1.5.1

Hi Amon_RA
I've posted this a while back, and I thought the weird problem with renaming the FAT partition is gone. But not quite..
Now I'm using your 1.5.2G version, and when I use UMS toggle my FAT partition gets renamed to PNG followed by some strange non-unicode characters like I described bellow ('HT' this time ???:D). I'm on OpenSuse linux, my phone is a 32B Sapphire. What can be done about this, why does it happen, and has anyone else experienced anything like it?
Any more information I can provide, just let me know!
TIA

Strange, I don't have this problem when using Windows or Ubuntu, do you also have this issue with other Mass Storage's as well?
The recovery for sure will not rename anything, I think something weird is going on with your OpenSuse ;)

All joking aside though, I don't have this problem with any other mass storages.. Weird... I'll try to find some way to deal with it, I can't live without your recovery. Thank you very much for your response!

been trying to partition for days now. no luck.
you know, there must be a reason, but i'm just curious...
1. why is apps2sd2 included in the cyanogenmod, if the recovery doesnt support partitioning like the amon-ra recovery does?
2. why not just include the amon-ra recovery instead of the 1.4+jf?
3. or build in the alt+ function that amon-ra has for partitioning into the 1.4+jf recovery?
4. in short, why include an app (apps2sd2) that you cant use "out of the box", so to speak?
i had all kinds of problems trying to flash the amon-ra recovery to my phone (green screen stuck on reboot, mount -a didnt work) but i think the problem was due to the fact that i was using the 1.5.2H.img file instead of the 1.5.2G.img (my phone has "with google" on the back of it, so its "google branded" i now understand) this, due to the fact that this thread's directions said:
"Use the H/G version if your Magic is HTC branded (PVT 32A board)/Google branded (PVT 32B board)."
My reaction to that was hmmm,......what?
so i just used the H img, and got stuck on the green screen on reboot
i guess those directions are "shorthand" for:
"Use the H version if your Magic is HTC branded (PVT 32A board);
Use the G version if your Magic is Google branded (PVT 32B board)"
god help us if we actually type out our instructions fully (so fools like me can actually follow them)
whatever, that i could have followed no problem
in any case, i would love to see the same function built into cyanogen's recovery or know why it hasnt been done
i'm gonna try using the 1.5.2G.img now...can't wait to use apps2sd...its gonna be Awesome!! I just know it will be!!!
I posted a similar version of this in the cyanogen thread

move your ROM to your memory card
start phone in recovery (home+power)
go to wipe
wipe everything
go back and click on flash
click on the second option (not the one that says update.zip)
look for your rom and flash..
cross fingers hoping your rom doesnt put you in a boot loop (which is fixable, just remove the battery then do the same steps with a different rom)

Wipe data/factory reset :: Wipe /data and /cache
query on this one: after i do a wipe data/factory reset, what state does this leave my phone in? is it still bootable, or is this a step in preparation for installing a new rom?
reason i ask is that i did a wipe data/factory reset on my cm 4.2.10.1 with 32a port and enoch's theme and it locked up on the enoch flash screen. if i want to wipe/factory reset should i do it and reinstall from scratch?

Hey Amon Ra i have rogers magic that i used the 1 click root method on and i was able to load the recovery image (RA-sapphire-v1.5.2) from this thread on to my device, afterwards i did a nandroid, a wipe and i flashed the 1.6.2 donut rom onto my device, everything went perfectly and i have been using this rom for the past 2 weeks.
My question is about my spl though, when i boot usin the volume down option i get
Sapphire PVT 32A Ship S-ON H
Hboot-1.33.0010 (Sapp50000)
CPLD-12
Radio-3.22.20.17
I think this is the perfect SPL, so should i leave it alone or should i try to change it to an engineering SPL and will i be able to flash roms at my leisure using this SPL

You can already flash any rom you want via the recovery ;)
If you would like to use fastboot to flash/erase images you can change it to an engineerings SPL, if you never use fastboot I would just stick to your current SPL.

... to some, but not for me.
I have a T-Mobile US MyTouch 3G (MT3G). It says HTC on the back, so I had flashed the recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.5.2H.img file.
However, that caused my phone to hang at the green screen.
When I booted with volume down + power I saw "SAPPHIRE PVT 32B SHIP S-ON G", so I had flashed the wrong image. recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.5.2G.img is what I needed and it works great!
Could this line from the instructions be clarified as to not scare people like me so much? ;)
Use the H/G version if your Magic is HTC branded (PVT 32A board)/Google branded (PVT 32B board).
Update: I think a link to this wiki would have helped http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Sapphire_Hacking

I intentionally didn't enable apps2sd because I really don't see the purpose of it. Apps2sd will just slow things down. There's plenty of space for apps in DATA on a Magic so why would someone need it? Do you have like 250+ apps ?
It's not a matter of enabling it, you'll need to manually create all links yourself etc.. to much to explain here..
The recovery will just move the files like mentioned in the first post : * Move apps+dalv to SD :: Moves all apps and Dalvik-cache to sdcard (This will NOT enable apps2sd!)

"There are no stupid questions, only stupid answers"
With that in mind here goes. I have flashed the latest recovery no probs. I have been using Amon's recovery ROMs for ages to partition, install other ROMs, wipe, etc... However, I have no idea what some of the functions do
I know, stupid.
But could someone, briefly, outline what the following do, their benefits and when they should be used?
Fix apk uid mismatches
Move apps+dalv to SD
Move recovery.log to SD
Wipe Dalvik-cache
Repair SD:ext
When should this be used? What will it do if I do this in the normal course of things ie not when flashing a ROM[/INDENT]
SD:ext 3 to ext 4
I understand that ext2 to ext 4 might speed the system up but I have a nagging feeling that not all ROMs support ext4? I am on CM 4.2.12.2
Cheers

Amon_Ra,
OK please let me rephrase my previous question on how to root my replacement phone.
I read your list of contributions and impressive they are, however I am somewhat confused as to which method to apply to get my MT3G back to root from all of the selections in your signature. My current SPL is 1.33.0006 and I can get the three skateboarding droids in fastboot. It appears to me there are several methods to install your recovery then a ROM to root in your list and that is where my confusion lies as to which method to apply. I realize that noobs like me are a PITA but we do appreciate your help.
Thank you or anyone else that can help me

Hey everyone,
I'm having an issue when attempting to install the latest Amon Ra Recovery. Once I open the recovery flasher and back up the image, I typed in /sdcard/recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.5.2G.img
and where to click to flash the image is grayed out. I just left the cm-img there and flashed it instead.
I don't quite get what to do.
I'm running a MT3G (32B) HTC MAGIC with CM 1.4 and Cyanogens latest 4.2.13.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!!

Have you tried doing it through a terminal from the market. The instructions are on the first post. It worked for me and the dude at the top of this page.

You can also try fastboot. First try to boot the ROM with
fastboot boot recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.5.2G.img
If this works then you can flash it permanently using
fastboot flash recovery recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.5.2G.img
good luck,

wtf
if you're using a HTC Magic (and it DOES NOT say Google on the back of your phone), you have to use the "recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.5.2H.img" not the "recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.5.2G.img"
is that the case?
cause i had that problem when i first started doing this stuff, and it was a real pain in the ass, until i finally figured out what those instructions on the first page really meant

Recovery Flasher only works on old kernels that were susceptible to a root escalation bug...one that has since been fixed in Donut and later (ie Cyanogenmod) builds of Android. The button in flashrec can be made clickable by touching on the right edge of the screen - a * will appear and the button will be clickable. That being said, it won't work on cyanogen - clear and simple.

something that would be AWESOME to add would be the option to shutdown the phone from the recovery-menu! Now I am forced to reboot and then restart, which is kind of bothersome.
Otherwise everything is perfect, thanks! (^-^)

Hmm i'm kind of stuck when i tried to flash the recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.5.2H.img.
First i tried via terminal. It doesn't say it flashes anything (it also doesn't give me an error, so i suppose its good), but when i try to get into the recovery my phone is stuck on the red vodafone splash screen.
I tried through adb, but that gives the same result.
the method through simple reboot doesn't seem to do anything.
I believe i don't have an engineering spl, so fastboot is not an option i guess.
What should i try next? I'm stuck now on cyanogens 4.04. (while i used to have the latest enomther)
using:
sapphire pvt 32b eng s-off h
hboot-1.22.2005 (sapp10000)
radio-2.22.19.26I
*edit:
Tried through fastboot. (seems that i have engineering spl, was confused with danger spl or engineering spl i guess)
fastboot erase cache
fastboot erase recovery
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
It says it flashes the image just fine, but again the phone is stuck on the red vodafone splash screen when i try to get into recovery :(
*edit2:
Sorry guys! I already fixed the problem. I used the recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.5.2H.img, while I should use the recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.5.2G.img. Everyting works fine now!

i press it once and it skips the size and i want to partition and go straight to formattin the card.
takes me a couple of tries of pressin and releasin the home button as fast as i can to get the size option

This is a recovery image not a ROM...plus you dont have to unroot and get stuck with a perfected spl while doing the Rogers update. Look up CursorSense, its based on the Rogers update.

i have your recovery on the sdcard
then when i go to cm's recovery i have following options:

- apply any zip from sd
- wipe data / factory reset
- nandroid v 2.2 backup
- restore latest backup
- repair ext filesystem
- go to console

You don't need to copy the switchrom.sh because it's already included in my recovery!!
Just boot into recovery, start adb and enter "switchrom" or "u" to start, that's it.

Hello,
I was running 1.2.3H and updated to 1.5.2H on my Rogers Magic (32A). I was using a terminal application on the phone. The first couple of tries I got "(Out of Memory)" errors but I didn't want to change to an eng. SPL to use fastboot. On the first couple attempts with the terminal I selected only "Allow" option from the "su" prompt. The last time however I used "Allow Always". I still got the errors (about 5 or 6 lines) but when I checked the recovery image I was at 1.5.2. This wasn't the case before.
Would you all say this was a successful update despite the errors? I don't know if I can trust the update or not.
Appreciate any feedback or tips that I can use to confirm that everything is okay with the recovery I'm running now.

I have a request; would it be possible to make an option that allows me to select and run a .sh script from the sdcard's root folder?

My phone doesn't have a /data folder. I made one and put the file in it and nothing happened. I am using a G3 My Touch. I actually went through several permutations of problem solving without success.
