So I have tried and tried and tried to get this to work with the "simple" re-boot method. Still have 1.2.3 and cannot get it to upgrade. I have a MT3G with a brand new class 6 card. I am using Cyanogen 4.2.15.
I didn't have a data folder so I created one.
Changed the name to recovery.img
put the file into the new data folder
rebooted all the way thru to the home screen
rebooted to recovery STILL 1.2.3!
What am I doing wrong?

or how about you rename the recovery file to something simple like recovery.img (not recovery.img.img that is a common mistake) put it on the root of your sd card, go to terminal and type:
$su
#flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img
Anyway us magic users want some carebear love too!

I tweeted Amon_RA about updating the magic recovery (a.k.a this one) so we can get some carebear love and he replied he will try to this weekend so a release should be around this weekend or next week.

Hey everyone, having problems using nand and bart backup options on my GFs mytouch. Was flashing the latest CM tonight and could not create backup. It would abort as soon as it started. Couldn't flash new CM thru recovery (again aborted instantly). Re-flashed recovery and still couldn't. Finally tried to update thru CMUpdater and was successful (all be it without a nand :p). After successfully flashing the new CM i again tried to boot into recovery and create a nand, again it would abort right away. I have plenty of space on her SD card, so anyone have any ideas? Please?
EDIT: Pulled manually and it worked!! Still cant backup/restore from recovery tho.... Any ideas? Thanks to #cyanogenmod on freenode for the help!!

Hello, just upgraded to pink-carebears and still can't make a nand backup from the menu in recovery. I still need to adb shell, backup-mobile.sh -b LALALA. Was wondering if anyone had any ideas? Thanks
EDIT: Also, it aborts installations when trying to flash any zip from SD card ect. I have to do everything in recovery manually. Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks Amon, for your awesome works. and a small Q, what does this change mean? Is that means that we can't use Nandroid option to backup the whole data like before? It works perfectly in the previous version.

You can just use nandroid the way you used it before, all your data will still be back-upped. The only difference is that it will not update stuff you don't really need to have a backup of.

My apologizes....pastebin here http://pastebin.com/J3L7HqRa as you'll be able to tell I updated to CM.15.1 from CMUpdater, once the update was finished again tried nand, nand+ext,Bart ect. Thanks for all your work!!
EDIT: OMG I am a complete idiot. I'm so used to my nexus1 that when messing with the GFs mytouch, *SIGH*, i've been making the rediculous error of hitting TRACKBALL, thus *SIGH*, aborting the nand backup, installation ect.. I'm just happy I realized this myself and it didn't take someone posting a reply....WOW I feel real dumb....lol

Feature request for the next release, would out be possible to have a shut down option as well as restart? I occasionally have cause to shutdown from recovery to access fastboot or whatever but at the moment the only way to do this is to pull the battery which is far from ideal.

got a stupid problem...
if i try to flash it via adb (with 1.5.2 amon RA recovery), i get an "erase error (0x082something)
if i try to flash it via fastboot, i get a "failed Checking info signature"
but if i erase recovery by using "fastboot erase recovery" and then use the adb thingy, it works if i try the adb flash thing about 1-5 times

This is a custom recovery based on Cyanogen's recovery source.
The purpose of this recovery is to avoid using adb by accessing all features directly from the menu.
This recovery if for the HTC Magic/MT3G only, if you have an :
- HTC Dream/G1 you should go here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4647751&postcount=1).
- HTC Hero you should go here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4549551&postcount=1).
- HTC Sprint Hero you should go here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4898505&postcount=1).
32A users with SPL 1.76.x should flash the Hero version!
I think that the red big row for 32A and new radio users should change to "Custom Recovery RA-Magic32A-6.35-v1.5.2" in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=592856 by cursordroid. Maybe there will be Custom Recovery RA-Magic32A-6.35-v1.6.2 based on your new work.

I advice you to upgrade to 1.6.2 and not use any older recovery because some binaries contain bugs that will bork your backups.
Yes it will restore old nandroid backups (if they don't contain any bad blocks).

Hi,
I'm coming from a stock 1.5 ROM. Flashed the RA-sapphire-v1.6.2H recovery using fashrec. I can enter recovery mode but after a few seconds the phone freezes and then reboots. I've tried flashing using adb but got the same result. Tried the Pink version...saw the care bear (funny idea btw!), moved up and down in options but after a while got the same result once again (freeze folowed by a reboot after a few minutes). Could not find the recovery.log, where is it?

loading up the sappimg.nbh in fastboot..I get the error message: Model ID incorrect.

Have been trying to flash this recovery over my old one. I'm running Cyanogen's latest mod.
I've tried the simple reboot method. The recovery.img file is in /data but when I do a reboot and then a recovery reboot I still see the old recovery GUI.
I can't get the terminal method to work. I do "su" followed by "mount -a" but when I run "mount -a" I get an error message saying something doesn't exist.
I haven't tried the ADB method yet; I assume that needs the Android SDK installing?
Before I try the ADB method does anyone have any ideas why the simple reboot method isn't working? I've compared the screenshot of the Amon Ra recovery in the first post to what I see on the phone and there's no similarity at all.

Maybe I missed it somewhere in this thread (but I do read it every day ;)) but why does this recovery backup less than the previous one? Using 1.5.2 a lot more stuff get's backed up.
Yesterday after an unsuccesfull JIT attempt I tried to restore a 1.6.2 backup but that failed. Using 1.6.2 to restore a 1.5.2 backup worked. Looking in the respective folders I saw that the 1.5.2 folder contained more files.
Maybe a "full" backup is also possible using scripts but I find just selecting Nandroid Backup on the phone itself much easier. Maybe for this reason I will go back to 1.5.2, or am I missing something here!?

or how about you rename the recovery file to something simple like recovery.img (not recovery.img.img that is a common mistake) put it on the root of your sd card, go to terminal and type:
$su
#flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img
Anyway us magic users want some carebear love too!
I did try to flash the recovery using terminal just like that..no luck. Then again I'm sure I missed at least one step in trying that out.

My phone: HTC Magic 32A, spl: 1.76.2007, radio: 6.35.10.18, rom: CursorSense 1.2.6.1 + HoFo, recovery: RA-Magic32A-6.35-v1.6.2
Why after flash recovery the phone won't turn on (stop on second splash) and I must re-flash rom or restore nandroid backup? I tried 3 different recovery and have the same result.
Edit: On second sd card my nandroid backup isn't done but I got message in recovery: backup complete!
There is recovery.log:

why is there an option to go to console for g1 but not mytouch? I want to be able to use console from recovery on mytouch.. what am i missing? thanx! /noob
The Dream/G1 has a physical keyboard so that is why they can do console while all the other users can't. You can't use the touchscreen in recovery mode (so that you don't accidentally press a option or something like that)
ADB is the same thing as console so use ADB instead.

Hi,
I'm coming from a stock 1.5 ROM.

That means that your current rom doesn't have the binary flash_image... This has nothing to do with this recovery.
Contact your rom dev or use fastboot to flash.

Could you explain what this has to do with the recovery?
And what does the cursor mod have that my latest hero recovery doesn't have?
I just flashed the old recovery (6.35) and it works fine. On the 1.6.2 Hero on my 32a sapphire it won't allow me to flash 32b roms, gives an error saying incompatible device or something (won't let me flash a rom built for dream). I'll try and find the error when i get home.

All I do is flash any rom (doesn't matter the size or type) then bart/nandroid works correctly.
Or try multiple times.

Take a look at the link to BART at the bottom of the features on page one. He gives the commands to type yourself.
I'm guessing those could be done in ADB on your computer. I haven't tried it myself yet, but I want to try other roms and still be able to use the current CM for my daily stuff... so I'll be trying it soon.

If you can get into fastboot then try again:
From Page One:
Copy recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.6.2H.img to a location where fastboot can find it.
Boot your phone into fastboot mode (boot while holding BACK)
Connect your phone via usb to your pc/mac/...
fastboot devices (to make sure that fastboot "sees" your phone)
fastboot erase recovery

Correct me if I'm wrong...
If I want to use BART to manage multiple backups, I need to do it thru ADB? There isn't an interactive BART menu thats burried that I'm not finding?
Will an interactive BART be added in the future? It makes it difficult to impress my friends by switching roms on the fly if I have to plug into my computer to do it. ;-)

If I loose my phone or get it stolen, I can wipe it using Exchange wipe function, but it reboots immediately to Android system recovery, giving the new "owner" all the tools to have a brand new phone ready to use.
Would it be possible to request a password prior to enter Android system recovery ?

The nandroid that comes with this recovery image doesn't seem to do a full backup. I'm only getting boot, data and system. With cyanogen's recovery, I was getting those three as well as cache, misc, recovery. Is there any way to change this behavior, or is it stuck this way in the image?
I don't see any options to expand the backup, so if I missed something, feel free to make me feel stupid for it.

This is from the Original Post on Page 1 of this Thread:
Change-log :
v1.6.2
Code:
- Added power off menu item
- New unyaffs binary patched by Koushik Dutta and Packetlss to fix the "losing root"-issue and incorrect file-time after a Nandroid restore
- New dump_image binary (by Brainaid) patched by Packetlss to fix the "bad blocks"- Nandroid restore issue.
(This will not fix old corrupted Nandroid backups! Please make new backups!!)
- New mkyaffs2image binary
- New flash_image binary
- Updated busybox to v1.5.3
- Nandroid menu options will NOT backup or restore recovery, cache, misc, splash1+2 (to avoid issues)
- Fixed wipe option not wiping when ext was not present
- Created carebear versions after the idea of packetlss
- Switched the Nexus logo to a Green Carebear with Nexus One logo (Thanks Montalbert!)
Definitely gotta read the original posts:cool:

Ok...I don't like asking much but this time I don't know what else to try.
I got stuck on the FAILED (remote: no allow) I was trying to install 1.6.2 after rooting my mytouch 3g v1.2 with SPL 1.33.0013,previous version v1.5.2 was working great.
I followed all the steps I was installing the new recovery image via adb shell, everything seemed to be working but once the installation was done I restarted and tried to boot into recovery but no luck....the screen shows the HTC logo and that is,unless I pull the battery out and restart....which works great.
The phone works great but no matter what I do...no recovery...tried via terminal, adb shell, fastboot and no luck,I even tried to install both versions H/G though my device is a 32A.
Anybody came across this crazy thing?I have seen some posts regarding this issue but it did not help at all, maybe I am missing something.
Thanks guys.
Never mind I just fixed it doing this:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4332591&postcount=1 and then this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=623141

make sure you dont have SPL 1.76.x, if so you have to flash the hero version (see page 1, original post)
also, not sure if this works on 1.5 stock
also, if your phone reads "google" on the back cover, flash the G version
if it reads "HTC" on the back cover, flash the H version
did you try flashing through terminal emulator?
place zip on sdcard in the root folder and go to terminal
type
$su
(forget the mount -a command, its not necessary)
# flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.6.2H.img (or recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.6.2G.img)
(obviously, dont type the "$" or the "#")
by the way if you dont have this http://www.androlib.com/android.application.jackpal-androidterm-zxnC.aspx terminal emulator, you wont be able to type numbers in in it, so get this one first

I'm having 2 issues/bugs:
#1: When I flash a ROM/zip, it goes back to the regular htc background screen. (not really an issue, but 'bug' I guess)
#2: Why do the nandroid backups use the time that's 4 hours ahead of me? Is there anyway to get it to stop using UMT/GMT and use my timezone? (EST -4)

That can mean two things :
- you are using the wrong version : G instead of H (or other way around)

- you are using the wrong version : G instead of H (or other way around)
- the img file you flashed is corrupted (did you check the md5sum?)
Hi!
I re-checked everything and manage to boot the recovery via fast-boot and it did not freeze! Amazing! I was going crazy with this! The only thing I did different was the download. I downloaded via rapidshare and not the mirror this time. Maybe I missed something before but I had already checked those two things. Going to flash via fast-boot now! ;)
I'll keep you guys posted!
Thank You!

OK, looks like it was a false alarm :(
Here's the situation:
Had problems with RA recovery freezes since the start and with different versions. Checked the version (H) and the MD5, they where all correct. Tried cm-recovery-1.4-32A and it seemed to work fine but when I flashed a ROM (1.6) I had similar problems with the ROM (freezes). Curiously I flashed my hero 2.0.5 (1.5) and had no problems.
With the cm-recovery-1.4-32A flashed I can boot into the latest RA recovery, scroll down the options and it does not freeze (I had one reboot, with no freeze, in 3 tries). The problem is that I canīt flash it trough fast-boot since I don't have an ENG SPL. Tried ADB and Flash-rec and flashed it but I got the freeze problem once again. Re-checked the version and MD5 and they where all correct.
Conclusion: If I have the RA recovery flashed and try booting into RA recovery using fast-boot I get the freeze problems once again (maybe the flashed recovery over-rights the boot one?). When I have de CM recovery flashed I can fast-boot into RA recovery with no freeze problems (I have it on boot recovery for like 20 minutes, scroll down the options, etc, and had no problems until now).
Why can't I flashed it? Could it be the SD card since the boot works? Could it be the Radio? Kind of lost here
Edit: Ok, it looks like it still freezes sometimes. Rebooted and booted into recovery using fast-boot but can't get it to work now. It just freezes everytime...Why does this happen? Any clues?
Thanks for your help!

(EST -4)

Try this
Download the img file
place in root of sd card
rename to "recovery-backup" without quotes
open flash rec.apk
click the "restore backup" button.
flashrec will recognize the Amun RA image as your backup instead of the stock recovery and flash it instead.

Checked the version (H) and the MD5 several times, they where all correct.
Tried booting the latest RA recovery trough fast-boot and it worked fine the first two times I did it (scrolled down the options for like 10 minutes and it didn't freeze). After that it did not work right and got the freezes+rebooting problem back again. Tried ADB, Flash-rec and flashed the recovery but got the freeze+reboot problem once again. Re-checked the version and MD5 and they where all correct.
Any ideas?

I tried this and it didn't work for me. If I do as you say, flash rec goes 'working do not interrupt' and nothing, doesn't do anything else, I've left it for about 10minutes. If I use that 'download recovery image' it thinks that my phone is 32A when is in fact, 32B.
EDIT: so I tried every method a could find again and only got results through Flashrec. As I said before, flashrec recognizes my phone as beeing a 32A when its a 32B but I thought it wouldn't hurt try to flash a H recovery. Turns out it booted just fine.
I still haven't done anything with it.
It's really not good idea to stick with this recovery or it's ok to go with it and flash a rom ?
EDIT2: I just tried the fastboot mode again and is funny how the recovery image H boots just fine and the G doesn't, since my phone is a 32B. I'm really confused at this point hahah

I have problems to start the flashed recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.6.2G.img.
The magic is 32b with Engineering-SPL-HBOOT-1.33.2010.
I already tried to flash with adb and fastboot.
When I try to boot the recovery with "fastboot boot recovery recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.6.2G.img" the magic hangs in the splash screen.
Any help is highly appreciated!!!
EDIT: the same for me here - I have a 32b with Google on the back of the cover and reflashed with H-version of recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.6.2H.img.
That works for me!!

Doesn't seem like the same problem. I can boot into recovery mode and scroll down the options but after a few seconds the recovery just freezes and then reboots. Checked the version (H) MD5Sums and everything was correct!

I have a 32A but tried booting the G version from fast-boot (your method, just the other way around ;)). Did not work for me. It just hangs on the splash screen. The same happens with the hero version. I knew it would not work but there were no risks and thought about giving it a try.

My question is can I put this recovery image onto my phone, if so do I use the G version? I know I'd have to use the fastboot method most likely.

The version of the recovery that you should use depends on the version of the radio that you have. I do not know why your phone is showing H - it could be because of the SPL but it doesn't matter.
Since that radio is a 32B radio go with the G recovery :)

Concerned that if I root and install RA recovery rom, that I will loss the additional memory The recovery image should not affect your memory.
But, if it is a Fender inside, you'll need a specific ROM for it to work at all. For example, the touchscreen is broken in G1/MT3G ROMs. You'll probably need to root using the goldcard method, too.
Don't hold me to this, but I have read that the Fender is a hybrid of 32A and 32B... hence all our problems. Because of that, I suppose it's possible your boot screen could show 32B instead.

It is the white myTouch and it does not have a headphone jack; this is pre Fender/LE/1.2.
I went for it anyway and installed RA-sapphire-v1.6.2 and Cyanogen's latest ROM. All is good; or seems to be...after installof everything less market apps, I had 292MBs available.
Only issue with the latest is ROM, is that I am missing trackball LED notifications - which was available in the last T-Mobile 1.6 release and configurable via setting->Sound and Display (it is no longer there)...so off to research that...
Thanks,

If I were on the ball, I would have asked you to capture the "About Phone" screen so we would know more about it. But I'm glad you were able to install the normal CM build.

Hmm, I don't recall ever having that to begin with. I'll have to check my stock phone, because I don't have it in gsxR (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=665601) either.

Hi, I have a Rogers Magic, old radio, AmonRA Saphhire recovery 1.6.2H, and just went to CM 5.0.7 with Bcrook's port.
Anybody having trouble with Nandroid after the update? Mine keeps quitting part way through. I finally got it to "finish", or appear to be finish after I wiped the dalvik cache and fixed uid mismatches, but it made a nandroid backup that was equal in size to the empty space on my SD card. Basically it made a 2.7GB backup that filled the card. I imagine it didn't actually finish the backup, but had an internal error and just kept writing to the card till it was full.
I also had a lot of problems flashing the black bar updated from Cloverdale. Kept giving errors until I cleared the dalvik and fixed uid mismatches. Then it flashed and it works now.
Everything in CM5.0.7 works perfect. Just odd that it would affect recovery somehow?

Sorry if this issue has already been addressed in the thread (it's getting pretty long!!).
I'm trying to flash the Amon recovery image on my way to my first Cyanogen ROM install.
I am using a Vodafone HTC Magic (32B, Australian version, Firmware 1.6, Build number DRC92).
I have tried using the fastboot method, both on Ubuntu 10.04 and Win XP, and running "adb devices" on both OS's lists my device serial number.
Unfortunately, when I boot into fastboot (back + power), I get to the fastboot menu (ie with fastboot USB in red). While connected via USB I run:
zeedok@zeedok-laptop:~$ fastboot boot /home/zeedok/Desktop/recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.6.2G.img
at the command line (Ubuntu) and nothing happens. I have pressed the back button and held the back button (as well as pressing everything else, rebooting the phone, rebooting the computer and everything else I can think of) and the phone stays on the fastboot menu and the terminal keeps:
<waiting for device>
Am I missing something? What can I do to get progressing? I'm keen to get a Cyanogen ROM (as safely as possible) running.
Thanks for any advice.
EDIT -- Might have been a rookie mistake, but running the fastboot command with the full path and sudo fixed everything up.

Ran into a little bit of an issue and hope someone can lend a hand. I tried everything listed on the first page to get this to install and nothing would work. Finally I went into the phone and booted up the terminal app and tried to go that route. It appeared to start to work but all of a sudden I got Not Enough Memory errors. I can now no longer boot into recovery. Any ideas how I can get recovery back on? I tried going the fastboot route, I been out of the rooting game for awhile but I was sure I had used the engineering SPL before. Apparently not because it keeps telling me: "error: cannot load 'recovery.img'
I'm also using 5.0.7-test2 if that makes a difference at all. I tried the first method listed on the first page but I didn't see a "data" section on my SDcard so I created one. Don't believe that did anything for me.
EDIT: Some how, some way, I finally got the recovery installed. phew, got worried I had become too rusty for a second.

By the way, for those using 1.6.2H recovery with CM5.0.7, nandroid+ext backup works perfectly if you created the 'sd' folder under system. It restores fine as well. I just tested it by wiping and going to a mytouch slide ROM and then restoring back to CM5.

I have the same problem as well.
I'm trying also to use instructions on page 5, but i'm getting this:

Also, forgive my stupid question it is the first time i'm trying to flash a recovery image. I have RAv1.6.2 as ROM but i haven't played with recoveries.
Where do you see the above phone informations when you have a recovery image installed? I think that boot with "back" pressed will get you in the recovery image. (Or i'm missing something).
Thanks!

1. This recovery is NOT yet fully compatible with the new apps2sd method! (as implemented in CM5.0.7)
2. Provide the recovery log if you want to be helped.

not using apps2sd, but got it to work
It works fine on w/o backing up ext because it is not looking for the ext partition. Since the ext mount point has changed from /system/sd -> /sd-ext/ and you have the patience, you can do a one-time edit of /etc/fstab and have it point to the new mountpoint, create the mount point -- /sd-ext, do a mount -a and then edit the nandroid-backup.sh script to look there for the ext partition. It works, just remember, you will have to do this everytime, for a restore/backup each time you reboot.
EDIT: I have found an easier way to back up the ext partition. Boot into the recovery console and then do the following:
mount /system && mkdir -p /system/sd
This will work after every reboot. So until a newer version of the amon_ra recovery rom is released, this will work. :-p

Which one would I use with the Newer 1.2 version MyTouch, the one with the 3.5 headphone jack???? would I use the one for the HTC Magic/MT3G, or the one for the HTC Dream/G1, what is funny is I would think the HTC Magic/MT3G... or is there a different one??? When I did it originally, I was following the directions off some site, and the one that is on there right now is RA-dream-V1.5.2, and it has been working great... just dont want to mess up my phone... You are using the wrong recovery. With the new radio 6.35... and SPL 1.76.2007, you need the hero recovery or Cursor modded recovery. See the first post!

Fixed it, just changed the name to JUST recovery.img :D
i just got the same errors trying to flash via terminal on my phone. I tried renaming it to recovery.img, but am still getting the error. here's what I typed and the errors I got:
$su
# mount -a
mount: mounting /dev/block/mmcblk0p2 on /sd-ext failed: No such file or directory
# flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img
mtd: read error at 0x00000000 (Out of memory)
mtd: read error at 0x00020000 (Out of memory)
and those out of memory errors repeated several times.
any suggestions on how to get it working in terminal?
before I tried the terminal method, I tried just putting the recovery.img in /data and rebooting, but that didn't work either.
I'm currently on Cyanogen's recovery and on his v5.0.7-Test3 ROM. the file i downloaded was sapphire-RA-v1.6.2G.img for my original mt3g.
I also just tried using flashrec and typed in /sdcard/recovery.img and pressed the "flash custom recovery image" button, but got a "Flash FAILED" message.

now I just tried downloading ROM Manager and tried to flash the ClockworkMod Recovery, but I even got an error message there. So my phone is having trouble flashing any recovery.
what should I do to fix this, wipe?
EDIT: okay ROM manager was able to install the RA recovery...rebooting now. seems to be stuck at the mt3g logo now. hopefully it's just taking a long time to boot.

Change-log :
v1.7.0
- Fixed some minor bugs
- Recovery and scripts use /sd-ext instead of /system/sd as mountpoint to support the new apps2sd method (implemented mostly by Chris Soyars)
- Added an option to backup/restore Google proprietary Android system files (backuptool.sh written by Cyanogen)
- Removed "move apps2sd"-option as it's not needed anymore with the new apps2sd method
- Updated BART to v1.3.1 (updated by Dumfuq to support /sd-ext)
- Added a wipe cache only option
- Nandroid now backups/restores /cache again by default
- Dalvik-cache wipes /cache/dalvik-cache now
- Removed SDCARD: prefix in output when chosing zip to flash
- Added Cyan version (There's no difference with the normal version, only the wallpaper and textcolor changed)

unfortunately i tried to flash the cya recovery for G branded phones via terminal first, so i got a bricked recovery right now.
i tried to flash it via fastboot later but now i encounter some problem where i get a message that only tells me "error loading....." same problem with adb and i even tried to get back to 1.6.2 but didnt help.
to sum it up, terminal, fastboot, adb doesnt work and unless i figure out how to get any recovery back on, easy reboot doesnt work either.
any ideas?

i had the same thing happen to me so i went into fast boot by pressing the back button and the on off button, "arrow and off, you will be greeted by a white screen i then clicked on something in there, but i fogot, after i rebooted the phone i let it go to the green screen and then it booted fine, but it still had no recovery flashed, so i made sure i had the recovery file in the sdcard and renamed it to cy and used the following to flash the recovery via adb
-Put the 'recovery-RA-dream-v1.5.2.img' on the root of your sd card
-reboot your phone and go into terminal and type the following:
su
flash_image cy.img
flash_image recovery /sdcard/cy.img

If we have no fastboot access (such is the case with some rooting processes), sometimes we need to use flash_image to flash the recovery.
Any idea why this is happening so frequently on 1.7? Because I want to know if we should stick to using an older version during the rooting process and then opt for an upgrade when we turn our SPL into engineering SPLs.

The out of memory issues are not related to the recovery but to a problem with the flash_image binary vs kernel on some roms... This is out of my control.

I've been rooted and playing with my phone for a while but never in fastboot. So today I decided to update Amon's recovery to 1.7 and saw that I needed to do it via fastboot vs terminal. Cyanogen requires old radio to run. that is 3.22 radio with 1.33 SPL.
Try the thread bellow to revert to old radio and then flash cyan.

You need to install a new one recovery (ex Clockwork), or install the Amon-RA via fastboot.

Yeah, I'm at a loss too. I tried to flash Clockwork from ROM Manager while running CyanogenMod 5.0.7-t7. This was before I realised there was a bug preventing the correct operation of flash_image.
Now I have no working recovery, and fastboot continuously fails with the "signature verify fail" message (despite the files having correct MD5sums). I have a factory-default engineering SPL and I'm definitely not getting the error I would expect if my SPL prevented recovery flashing.
This is now a chicken-and-egg problem too. I will need to upgrade CyanogenMod (or downgrade) to a version where flash_image works. And I cannot install a new recovery in order to flash a new CyanogenMod.
What exactly does "signature verify fail" mean and how to I work around it?

okay... trying to root and setup my wifes mt3g with cm 5.0.7 (or another, more stable rom). she has a stock 32a, google branded. i have a rooted nexus with 2.2 right now... but there are some things that are unique to the g1/mt3g device family...
the one part i'm confused is where to flash the engineering spl, i have to flash amon's recovery. but to flash amon's recovery, i need to already have the engineering spl.
umm... can someone please clarify this for me?

Use rom mager to flash cyan4 then flash your recovery then reflash t7
ROM Manager will not flash system ROMs until Clockwork recovery is flashed. My current system ROM is CyanogenMod 5.0.7-t7 which is incapable of correctly flashing ROMs, so Clockwork recovery cannot be installed. Hence "chicken-and-egg". :S

Just boot into recovery instead of flashing it, and flash from withing recovery.
That way you'll not have any flash_image issues with 5.0.7..
Make sure you've installed the latest sdk (and that you've compiled fastboot if you are using linux).
Copy recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.7.0H.img to the root of your sdcard.
Make sure that recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.7.0H.img is also available on your pc and that fastboot can find it (set your PATH correctly, or put the img in the same directory as fastboot, adb)
Boot into v1.7.0 recovery, this will not flash the recovery, just boot it (you don't need a special SPL for this) :
fastboot boot recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.7.0H.img
Adb shell into the booted recovery :
adb shell
#mount -a
#flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.7.0H.img
If you don't have any pc around you can try to use bash as shell.
Start the terminal app on CM 5.0.7
#bash
#flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.7.0H.img

fastboot boot recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.7.0H.img
This was the silver bullet I needed. :D The help text from fastboot doesn't really make it obvious that you supply an image to the boot command. I'm all flashed up now. /yay!

So I am in the same boat as the others that didn't see the warning about Cyanogenmod 5.0.7-test7 and flashed within the OS.
I tried everything that I could find to recover my recovery partition but nothing seems to work. I can't do anything in fastboot because apparently I have a perfect SPL (I had rooted my MyTouch3G back in the one-click root exploit days).
If anyone can help I would be eternally grateful.

I doubt you have a perfected SPL - just go get an Engineering SPL then fastboot it. If you do have a perfected SPL, fix it. It works betting in the long run.
Edit: You might also want to try the H version if currently using the G version or vice versa. There's a very small chance you'll actually brick from this - my worse case is being unable to boot into recovery until I flashed the correct version. (Mine's the H.)

Hi r3s-rt,
I tried going between the H and G versions with the same result :(
My SPL is HBOOT-1.33.0006 (SAPP30000) which I was told on the cyanogenmod forums is a perfect SPL. If I wanted to go the engineering SPL route, how would I flash without recovery? Also, which SPL in particular would work on my original MyTouch3G (I get very confused when people start refering to 32A, 32B)

For anyone having problems after attempting to flash a recovery in CM 5.0.7 and also have a Perfect SPL:
I initially rooted by following the Cyanogenmod Wiki instructions for my MT3G (32B) in which you format an SD card, downgrade with the linked sapphimg.nbh then flash CM1.4 Recovery.
Click here for CyanogenMod instructions (http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Main_Page#Installing)
I repeated this process that would:
- Load the original recovery (included in the sapphimg.nbh)
- Managed to load the CM1.4 Recovery on there
- Grabbed an engineering SPL for my Magic/MT3G (Click here for MAGIC SPLs ONLY (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=529019)!)
- Flashed that using CM1.4
- Booted into Fastboot, and used that to flash RA-sapphire-v1.7.0 (instructions provided in the OP).
That worked perfectly without having to create a Goldcard. Arguably more complicated, but as it was all steps I had done before, pretty painless.
If you're stuck and really want to get a working recovery, follow those instructions. Heck, I'd follow those first just so I know I won't waste my time with solutions that potentially won't work.

My SPL is : 1.33.2005
I tried fastboot but i don't know where i'm suppose to put the recovery image. I put it on the root and my fast boot can't find it. When it says to connect to pc via USB do i just plug it into my PC?

So...got a little problem, because flashing my recovery works somehow diffrent...
the way via adb in recovery yields:
mtd: erase failure at 0x0028000 (I/O Error)
mtd: erase failure at 0x0028000 (I/O Error)
mtd: skipping write block at 0x00280000
/
Fastboot gives me a "remote: signature verify fail" since i got no ENG SPL
Device:
32A SHIP S-ON H
1.33.0009 (SAPH10000)
3.22.20.17 Radio
Amon_RA 1.6.2 Recovery
Cyanogenmod 5.0.7
BUT - if i do the following:
fastboot erase recovery
fastboot boot recovery-ra-sapphire-v1.6.2H.img
adb shell
mount -a
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-ra-sapphire-v1.7.0H.img
> erase failure 0x00280000
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-ra-sapphire-v1.7.0H.img
> here it says nothing
reboot recovery
now i get a new flashed recovery...the other ways posted by amon_ra won't work...
why fastboot won't work is simple, i got no ENG SPL
but it should work in recovery...but it doesn't

In the tools folder in the SDK folder. I renamed my AndroidSDK folder to Android
Then follow these codes in command prompt (I used Windows to fastboot). I renamed the long name for the cyan recovery image to just cyan.
cp C:\Android\tools
fastboot flash recovery cyan.img

If you don't have any pc around you can try to use bash as shell.
Start the terminal app on CM 5.0.7
#bash
#flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.7.0H.img
bash 4.1$ flash_image recovery /sdcard/rec.img
error writing recovery: Permission denied
any help? I am on cm 5.0.7
btw I renamed the flash recovery image, it was originaly (recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.0.7G-cyan.img)
I have a mt3g 32 b version is it because I used the G recovery instead of H?
and I tried flashing amon_ra's from clockwork using rom manager and now it screwed up. I tried flashing back to clockwork using rom manager its screwed up also... <.< and I have no knowledge on fastboot or adb. so I tried the terminal emulator method and its giving me errors :(

It worked great for me.
Using Nand backup I created a new backup of the 5.0.7 that I was using. I then flashed a 1.6 ROM. I skipped registration and went straight to the terminal emulator to flash the new recovery image. (I had to rename the file recovery-RA-sapphire-v1.7.0G-cyan.img to not include numbers i.e. recover-cyan.img so i could use the basic emulator that doesn't allow number input with mytouch) Once that was complete i rebooted into recovery and verified that RA-sapphire-v1.7.0G was there. I then immediately used Nand Restore to go back to my 5.0.7 ROM and all is good. I hope this helps.

Please post in the correct thread/forum! Your issue isn't related to this recovery at all.
I think that you can't log in because your APN settings are incorrect.
Press MENU when you see the "Touch Android to begin"-screen and set the correct APN settings. You should see a 3G or a H appearing.

Yes :D , I'll soon create an update package based on skittleguy dump, with root enabled.
this let's me confused. Where "inside" is the root/non_root flag? How can a nandroid backup make a device rooted?
If that is so, what are the HW/SW similarities required between two phones if I wish to dump my backup to a non-root mobile? Same Radio/SPL?
Sorry for the mental mess xD
