So like many guys still running the Hermes and knowing its getting long in the tooth, might be thinking about jumping ship to the new Dream/Android.

I looked at it real close and it had everything that my Hermes didn't, it had a built in GPS, Accelerometer, and it had all the stuff I needed that made me keep my Hermes so long. Full keyboard, nice touch screen, MicroSDHC expansion. So I made the plunge about 2 weeks ago and got a Dream.

The first day it was fun to play with. I looked past the lack of real nav software. I glossed over the email client that was crappy. I found a replacement mail client that actually worked. I tried to use Google Maps, the real desktop was pretty cool, the widgets for the desktop was novel, but today was the straw that broke the camels back. I was out in the car waiting for the wife, I was parked in the sun and decided to move the car into a shady area. I was fiddling around and the phone locked. I tried, holding the power, holding the power and the home key, it just froze up. I looked for some sort of nice reset button like the Hermes and Diamond, nothing. I finally took it apart and removed the battery. It booted back up, and took 2 full Min's to finally get signal and get on the network. Then when I tried to make a call, it kept saying "Error Android has quit" then closed the dialer. Mean while my wife I was standing on the curb trying to call me. That was when I took it apart, yanked my sim, grabbed my Hermes popped the sim in, plugged it into the car charger and tossed the Dream into the glove box.

There are a few apps like the GPS Speedo and soon to be released Dyno app, that will warrant keeping it as a toy utility, but it just can't replace the tried and True Windows Mobil OS. Maybe in a year or so when the Android has matured, it will be worth taking a 2nd look at.

Right now, "in my personal opinion" the only real replacement for the Hermes is the Touch Pro. Which is not available on the network I am on. So this is my suggestion, if you want a new phone, find someone that has one, play with it for a bit. Talk to them about the apps you use, vs what is available on the Android. I am not saying its a bad phone, as frankly its on par with the latest Apple I-Phone 3GS. If you want a gimmick, something to play with. If you want Pizazz at the expense of down to earth tools. It might be great for you.

Its a solid phone, looks nice, has a nice feature set.

However a windows mobile fan I am, and probably will be for life.
