new for flashing rom

Hi all.
i am preparing to flash my PDA phone...or known as smart phone

i am using elfin(128ram256rom)=htc touch enhanced

now using original rom wm6.0 cht with touch flo 1.0(first one)

wanting to flash it to 6.1/6.5/7.0:confused:

and hear something about BRICK.../cooked rom/shhipped rom/ETC

lots of PRO NOUNS,,,
question here..

WHAT IS
BRICK? i known as DEAD PHONE....(cannot use anymore just throw it away) WHICH I MOST AFRAID!!!!
COOKED ROM?
SHIPPED ROM?
CID LOCK?
or G4 something else from XDA-wiki(difficult for me to understand)
