View Full Version : Do you want 128MB upgrade?
tomal
8th July 2009, 06:02 AM
Hey guy's:
Due to the high demand of memory for upcomming OS's I thought I would give you an opportunity to upgrade the memory of your Uni. As you know, one of my friends did the upgrade for me here (in Bangladesh). I discussed with him personally last night for his service and he has shown some interest.
Now I need to know spending how much is actually worth/comfortable for you. I'll then discuss with him further. But please note, chip has to be ordered/bought from eBay.
Let me know if your are interested.
UPDATE:
Details for upgrade -
UPGRADE COST: USD 100 - included chips+service charge+return shipping (regular post).
UPGRADE COST: USD 110 - included chips+service charge+return shipping (express post). But Express post service is available for limited number of countries.
You can provide the chips if you want but they have to proven working. 20$ will be deducted from the total cost in this case.
You must bear the cost for shipping from your end.
Complete device is not accepted. You need to unmount (http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC%20Universal%20Service%20Man ual) the device and send ONLY the mainboard without any other assembly.
The mainboard must be well-packed during shipping. The same packaging may be used for return shipping.
The whole process could take approximately 6-8 weeks (including shipping/upgrade/return shipping).
I will not take the responsibility in case the board is damaged or lost during transit.
Due to export control regulation: some of the countries are considered out of this project. i.e. Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and all other countries those has direct border to Singapore. Italy has no usual restriction but the postal handling is not so pleasant. Parcel may get lost during shipping/return shipping so it is up to your interest.
Payment (PayPal is prefered) has to be made only when you get notified that the upgrade is done. Board will be then re-shipped.
PM me if you're interested and I'll then provide you the shipping address.
Cheers

I am interested!!
Not sure about price but in London you have to pay aprox. 50 - 80 pounds.
How this would work? shipping?
I´m in:D and waiting further instructions!

Can you tell me somewhere that'll do the upgrade in London? I can't find ANYWHERE! Many thanks

@orb:
you need to send your mainboard, not the whole unit.
the board will be returned after upgrade. in this way it will help to avoid tax.
We will discuss about all other concerns but first I need to know the interest from you guys.

I am interested. Can afford $50, I guess.
Your friend could also do USB port repairs, seems to be the problem that far too many Unis and their owners suffer from.
Question: Can chips be harvested off a defunct Uni/Wizard board? I have some lying around gathering dust in various states of disrepair or repair is simply uneconomical, but I know the RAM BGA chips are fine. Can give chips as part of payment... perhaps...
What do they cost on eBay?

Consider it is not a commercial service. He will do it because of my request. But in the other way, we need to pay him something or he will not feel the interest. Also there is a cost involved for returned shipping.
P.S: I just checked at eBay, a pair of chips are about 20$ (including shipping).

Not sure the exact amount I would spend currently. Maybe we need to figure out how much it is for return shipping then go from there as far as payment. Most of the users are closer to you I would assume than I. But Im definately interested in this idea. Is there a way to get a flat rate shipping from your end to the rest of us throughout the world? Something similar to what the USPS is offering now with certain boxes that weigh under 70 pounds. Hopefully so but you can count me in. Also would be hoping you and your friend could offer the broken USB port repair.
Also BIG THANKS for the great roms and support you have provided to us Uni lovers :) We ask you keep up the awesome work. :D

For me Hong Kong seems to be the only and thew closest option with $128. So if Tomal's idea fails, I might check with them whether they'll accept the board only and wait for FX to improve.

If there are significant number of interests then it is feasible to manage everything (chips+service+shipping) within 70-90$.
But I find the interest is very less. I'm thinking to withdraw my proposal in this case. :(
All the best.

11th July 2009, 08:51 AM
I think you'd get more interest if the price was established, rather than asking what one would be willing to pay. I am sure there is plenty of interest in upgrade, especially from those who are unable to do it locally.

I think that's an awesome price. It even beats getting it done in UK! If you really wanted, you could sell this on eBay - I'm sure you'd attract even more from there.

But I mentioned earlier, it is not a commercial proposal.
Main idea was helping Uni community so that this device will survive sometime more.

I'm in Canada and while I'd like to find a Canadian/North America solution for this, I am interested. To be honest however I'd rather ship the whole thing rather then just the motherboard, but whatever it takes.
Are there any other hardware upgrades other then the 128mb one? Also someone asked a question earlier in this thread about upgrading the memory beyond 128mb, is that possible?
Thanks
Blake

Nope, more than 128MB is not possible. Higher memory chips are not compatible.

Is this service available anywhere within US ? If not then count me in.
I also prefer to attach a gps unit to the board if possible. Or connect the smallest available gps chipset directly to the battery power..and let the jasjar connect via bluetooth.
I have the extended battery and the cover..It provided some space to place my gps chipset inside in the battery compartment space and connect direcly to the battery power. It worked! Any other solution ?

Italy seems to be notorious for delivery problems, missing parcels and various delays, most eBay sellers refuse to send to Italy or warn of huge delays in processing by customs. Are you sure you want to be a test subject?

Ok guy's, I did lot of home work and I'm a bit confident that there should be no problem to return the board after upgrade.
So, most important concerns I'm highlighting here:
Flat rate upgrade cost is prefered so that we can avoid burgains.
USD 95 - included chips+service charge+return shipping (regular postage)+paypal fee.
USD 105 - included chips+service charge+return shipping (express postage)+paypal fee. But Express post service is available only for limited number of countries.
If someone wants to provide the chips. It can be accepted but the chips have to be brand new. 20$ will be deducted from the total cost in this case.
Sender must bear the cost for first shipping.
The mainboard must be well-packed during shipping. The same packaging may be used for return shipping.
I will not be responsible in case the board is damaged or lost during transit.
Due to export control regulation: some of the countries are considered out of this project. i.e. Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and all other countries those has direct border to Singapore. Italy has no usual restriction but the postal handling is not so pleasant. Parcel may have lost during shipping/return shipping so it is up to your interest.
Anything else we need to consider....?
Please give me your input/comments feel free. I'll then settle it and update the gist in 1st post. Everyone visiting this thread will find then required info there, without reading the whole thread.
cheers

Thank you old buddy. :))))
I should have no problem to return but I can't comment about your postal service. Using priority courier is complicated because in that case I have to take an additional permission from customs. It is matter of some fee and hassle. Also courier fee is not less than 40$.
In my opinion, postal service is much better choice considering money and customs hassle.
The response rate is much much higher than I was expecting! I'm scared to see the number of PM's I'm receiving. I'm sorry, I have no other alternatives.
Anyway, I'll provide you the shipping details if you're interested.

hey Tomal, thanks for the quick response. I guess I dont have an option but to pay higher and make sure I use a private courier service. The standard postal usually fails and I've lost several online orders. I'd recently bought a PDA case from Boxwave.com and had it shipped through standard shipping....the first one never reached, and the second which was resent took 3-4 weeks!
If its not too much of a hassle, can you just check with someone like DHL/Bluedart or some respectable courier service provider and find out costs for me?
Also, can you PM your address that I'll have to ship mine to?
Coincidentally, I too have two Universals - one with the LCD screen broken! One is a G3, and the other is a G4 device. Which one would work best with the RAM upgrade?
cheers, and dude......you're one godsend!! :) :) (Also, its always your ROMS that i always have been using all along! Thanks on that front too ;))

My PC detects it in normal mode but not in bootloader,MTTY doesn't show the USB option.
What can be the problem?I've wasted 2 days trying to figure it out.
My local hardware guy says I've to send it to Pune(120KM from where I live) as the USB port could be broken.
Tomal...what should I do?
May I send the whole device to you people?
It wouldn't cost any more than here.Or am I to fix it here only?
Sorry for the trouble.Please answer.

How much extra to just send the whole unit for him/her to do the work.Ironicaly my son dropped it the other day and it came apart, would prefer to ship it whole and let him/her services it that way, so atleast he could verify that everything is in working order.

Sorry, current scope is limited to RAM upgrade only. Please DO NOT send the whole unit; there is a big chance to lost it in this case!

Everyone visiting this thread will find then required info there, without reading the whole thread.
cheers

Dear Pal's:
I'm sharing you a scary findings related to our memory upgrade scheme.
I bought 05 pairs of RAM chips from the eBay seller "elecrealm". Then I ordered another 06 pairs (in different order) to "zenglirong" as the first seller was out of stock. I received 05 pairs from the 2nd seller till now and another pair is just on the way, I may receive it soon. Four boards have been upgraded using the chips from the first seller. Then I received some chips from 2nd seller and did the fifth upgrade using them. But the board has failed to turn on after the upgrade (using chips from 2nd seller)! The chips may be didn't connect well and my buddy removed the chips, reballed and reinstalled but no success. Then he removed the chips and installed another new pair, same result. He left the MB and started installation on another MB. But same result for the 2nd MB. He left it as it is and started another one. What's happening! 3rd MB do not turn on too!!
He removed the new chips, reballed the original's and reinstalled. MB turns on without issue! Now he started thinking that the chips are faulty. He called me at his house and explained the situation when I was there. But I was not convienced with his explanation and given him my Uni to prove it. He installed the chips (last pair) from the 1st seller. MB turned on without trouble. Then, he removed the chips and installed another pair from the 2nd seller. MB has failed to turn ON! Now both of us came to conclusion that the chips from 2nd seller's are DUMMY and FAKE!!
SO BE AWARE!! DO NOT BUY ANY CHIP FROM "zenglirong"!!
Important Notes:
I'm out of chips now. PLEASE STOP SENDING YOUR MB until I can arrange working chips!
I'll sent you an email/PM (based on the arrival) those already sent the MB.
I'll sent you an email/PM those already sent the MB and I received them. But cannot upgrade due to the unavailibility of the chips.
I'll retain the MB for some time or return it to you based on the instruction from your side.
I'll order 1-2 pair soon from other seller just to verify they are working. If any of you know any "trusted seller" (selling ram chips), please share his ID. I'll do a test buy from him.
The board already upgraded has been returned. Those has been informed over email/PM so no issue for them.
Sorry for the inconvenience caused.

I purchased from 'zenglirong' on a regular basis, mostly Nokia parts. Last time I purchased N95 LCD and N95 backdoor cover she took 2 weeks to send, although she claimed she sent 2 days from the date of payment. What do you know, the parcel had a Hong Kong Post stamp, stating the date the item was sent and she claimed it's the date it arrived. Yeah, like Hong Kong stamps NZ post on arrival...
LCD never turned up, so 3 weeks later she sent a replacement. Can't say I had non-working items from her, but last trade left me and my customers somewhat unhappy, as it took over a month instead of 7 days.
I say contact her and request a refund, I could understand 1 chip being faulty, but if the entire lot causes you problems, it makes no sense asking for the chips to be replaced.

According to Wiki Universal, that you need is: "First thing is to get hold of two of the 64Mb M-RAM chips.
What you need are Infineon HYB25L512160AC -7.5 (2 pcs - 512MBit each)"
So, I think that ram memory you've saw, is the one we all need...

Thanx young man. ;) .....just kidding. :D
It will take another 2/3 weeks.
You can follow the service manual (link provided by Jonny) fortaking out the mainboard. It is really easy.
Just a little note from my side (to unmount the back cover) if that helps -
- Remove the stylus, battery and four screws under the battery
- Go to page #13 @ service manual
- Put your thumb finger of left hand @ the stylus hole and press a little hard
- You'll immediately notice a gap, now enter a plastic stick (or your nail from right hand) into the gap to unloak the hook. Move the stick around the device to unlock all...

Well all 6.1 roms work with 128mb uni no need to be specifically coocked for 128 version any regular 64 version will do... you just need to change the pagepool to 0.... instruction in wiki and orby's FAQ post.... lol:p:p:p

Enigma1nz: Any special apps for 128 MB RAM?( Don't say Solitaire:D )
Well, I have both 64Mb and 128Mb, there are no special apps for 128Mb, however, having 128Mb means more freedom to run apps that are memory hogs or to run a few apps without having to close to free memory. For example, Opera 9.7 with widgets and bits, SPB Mobile Shell 3.5, some games etc.
Another thing is WM6.5, I would not recommend installing on 64Mb if you need a fully functional device, memory constraints will be felt pretty much as soon as you startup.
The only advantage WM5.0 has over every other developed ROM is Video Call, so unless absolutely necessary, I'd skip.

Sorry guys, my work load significantly has increased in recent days. My time do not allow me to do anything extra...
I'll just finish the boards I received by this time and send back (after upgrade) as soon as I can.
Thank you for you guy's understanding.

This is so horrible. I knew this was going to happen. I just got some spare money to get this done :( this is a sad sad day for me. Is this the final decision or until your work load decreases?
