View Full Version : [ROM DEV] QuickMenu instead of honeycomb. Kitchen package + CABs!

Hello guys...
as some of you were asking me, how to permanently put QuickMenu in the place of honeycomb, with a RAM return, I'm putting for you a ready to use package for that.
So - first, we're just installing QuickMenu. Easy, normal process, I'm using the same package for two years already ;) Be warned though it requires DelayedExec app, as QM was sometimes causing some problems during a cold boot. If you don't have it, or don't want it, just re-edit LNK file to remove its usage.
Then - it seems QM can't capture "start" word under wm6.5, so we're using a great app named "StartButton" and set it to capture this word and call QM.
Then - hey! Where're some of the icons from the settings menu?... Well - remember some of them were out of their folders? We need to get them back...
In the end... we want to get rid of the honeycomb itself, as it's still sitting in our RAM - almost 2MB of RAM on QVGA! It's a nightmare... how to do that? Easy... just edit proper CPR files and set them to... null text ;) this way system won't be able to prepare a whole scene and won't load those files - returning you all this RAM. Be careful - it's prepared for QVGA, so for other resolutions, you have to re-edit this file and change the filenames in it!
The package contains all those things - preconfigured QuickMenu, fixed settings items in their proper folders (done with a provXML file), preconfigured StartButton and special initflashfiles.txt file, changing the CPR files to the empty ones.
Enjoy your brand new, fast and full of RAM WM6.5!
DOWNLOADS:
1. For the kitchen:
The package in the EXT format for ervius' kitchen can be downloaded from here (http://www.4shared.com/file/116377075/faac75b8/QuickMenu_wm65.html).
2. For normal users:
2a. twopumpchump compiled a CAB installation, it's here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4098610&postcount=7). It fits all the resolutions!
2b. jfrm reedited this CAB, so it doesn't remove the honeycomb. So, if you want, just quit QM and there's your honeycomb back! It's here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4101818&postcount=28).
2c. Another version from jfrm - tapping on logo will pop QM, while tapping on the "Start" word will pop honeycomb. It's here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4172780&postcount=64).

last night i was trying to make this works over the START word in task bar... this is great...!!!
BTW do you know how to remove the titanium?
I dont want the whole files, but if i disable chome in sys or bronze or bronzeEA the start wont works and the devices freeze by itself... maybe we couldnt and just need to disable it in today settings and thats all! but it seems that the semitransparent bars gets lost... in that way we can have a full vanilla lots of storage and great RAM with the speed of WM6.5 and its awsome scrolling.
Nice work dude! will try it on my next release as a ultra vanilla!

hi friend, ltns :) just tried the new "old style" start menu and seems to be working great. i did get the popup for DelayedExec since i dont have it in my rom, but i can fix that np. im partial to 6.5 start menu myself, but do you mind if i make a cab, or you can if you want, so some of my users can have this on my 6.5 roms? alot of people still want the old 6.1 menus and this would be great for them :D

Install this one as normal and then manually edit StartMenu_Global_*.cpr and StartMenu_GridScene_*.cpr files :)
Maybe someone will reedit this cab and include a full set of cpr files. Or maybe TPC has already done this.. just check it :)

I have been thinking to much before going to 6.5 due the lost of QMenu and WkTask. So for me your trick is a very, very good news. Thank you very much.
Anyway, Is it possible to keep both menus working?
In my old Hermes 6.1 I have Original Star Menu set to Ms logo Long Press and QMenu to normal press, and now with the huge memory of my new Touch Pro, will be nice to keep both. One for finger use and the other one for stylus time.
Thanks for the effort.

In 7th post twopumpchump posted a CAB file, get it and install it.

It's because I put it into personal section, and not to system, as it was originally ;) I prefer it that way.

Think about this
the cab file can be open with winrar or cabmanager or some more apps so... open the cab file and delete the cpr files... save it and you are good to go...

Good work utak3r & tpc, thanks!
Once somebody asked why is QM not cooked into ROMs so much. I was thinking about two points. One is maybe lack of promotion to let everybody know the advantage of QuickMenu. Second is we need to overcome people's habited way of using startmenu.
I never tried to disable the honeycomb, but you made it clear that it means 2MB RAM released. Now of course I'll do it, only for the 2MB RAM,.
I was seeking some RegTweak way to disable the Honeycomb. If its possible, then we don't need to touch the cpr files. And then we can have a MortSript toggle for turning honeycomb on/off. This will be good for cooks to face all users, those tends to have different appetite for everything.
Another thing is the issue of 'Enlarge StartMenu', it's better just disable it by the way to release some more RAM, in addition that the 'Large StartMenu' itself is an enemy of QuickMenu. Don't understand why 'large startmenu' components still available in WM65 ROMs now that it's using HoneyComb. Maybe also has sokeway to reactivate the triditional startmenu?
Thanks.
utak3r
9th July 2009, 09:21 AM
Maybe also has sokeway to reactivate the triditional startmenu?
well, there is. I saw it yesterday suddenly, after furious clicking and tapping ;) Unfortunately, can't remember the way - I was way too sleepy... but, the news is: there IS still the old menu somewhere, we just have to know how to call it.
Another thing is what you said: if there were some way of just unloading honeycomb, instead of destroying it, it would help more people to use such a solution... I will seek for it, for sure :) If you find it, please do inform me :)

I sent my device to sercice center to solve some hardware issue, hence I can not do anything in some days.
Naybe we can compare the registry part of start menu btween WM61 & WM65, may find some clue.
Edit: And the two issues are related, if we find the way to load the traditional start menu, I think the honeycomb is just unloaded.

I have tweak the cab to avoid HoneyComb deletion, extracting cpr files from it.
QMenu is working perfectly and it is possible to exit from it and get the Honeycomb again.
My original idea was to configure QuickMenu so a long press in logo get QMenu and normal press the HoneyComb, but this options doesn't work. Any press in the logo invoke the QMenu regardeless the box you mark in QMenu Options.
Thanks again

True. The same was with a "start" word - QM should take care of it - but it didn't - that's why there's a need for this StartButton app.
But... if you remove StartButton (or just change its reg) then tapping on logo would bring QM while tapping on "Start" would call honeycomb.

Forgot to mention, QuickMenu is also possible to be associated with Dotfre's TaskMgr.exe, i.e. using tasmgr.exe for application management, instead of using the task manager from the OS. Check my collection of QuickMenu Tips on this post (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=3682602&postcount=748).

But you must (only need to) put TaskMgr.exe into Windows folder.Edit: and don't rename it.

Actually it is not able to remove honeycomb. We are actually hooking the start button to any prog of our choice using startbutton.exe. I would like to have a standard convetional start menu instead of honeycomb which at present, with this method is still not becoming possible...

No.
Look closely - it inserts dumb cpr files, which causes system is not able to start honeycomb - and it's not starting at all - giving you your free RAM back :)

No, I won't supply a cab - in the kitchen package it's done already, and for the cab version, ask tpc if he did include this thing in the cab. I can't test this 'cause I have my rom precooked this way already ;) and I don't have a time to dissolve this cab and check it.

I'm a big fan of this app.
But the problem with it is the ( frequenters ) which are the shortcuts placed directly in the start menu folder . This was applicable for WM6.1 but 6.5 something weird happens every time I softrest my device which is the relocation of my shortcuts from the start menu folder to the programs folder inside the startmenu directory !!! So no frequenters !!
If this problem can be solved I would appreciate that :)
BTW, I tried Wisbar Advance once and it has an option to choose the startmenu folder for it's startmenu ,, but WA is a messy app and eats a big part of my RAM ,,
My question, Is it possible to change the root or the path of QM or not ??!

Recent doesn't really do the job, moreover, it's deletable by clear temp and other tools !!
what I need is that either my shortcuts remain fixedly loacted in the startmenu folder or if possible , getting my start button assigned to a different path ..

What about you don't damage the cpr file, just delete all registry entries related to it? I did not look into it since I don't have device at hand at the moment.

simpler solution...
copy .cpr to .bck
zip the bck
null the original .cpr
this way you can always go back...

Here you go.. Give this a test. Everything should be in there. If you still have problems you can use advance config to import the prov xml file that is attached. That works also..

We have working QM now, but recents and frecuenters (don't know exactly what is this last) don't work and, most importan for me, the 6.5 system move automatically any .lnk file I put in the root of "start menu" to star menu/programs.
Somebody know how to avoid this?
Thanks

This one have been updated.
Of course it is utak3r version, but I have included in it the: last files from the creator of qmenu (last exe versions and corrected mui), move all the qm files to his own folder in Program files, and change the reg keys in the cab to keep HoneyComb when you press in the word "Start Menu".

Got some sence for how to kill the HoneyComb from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=509160&highlight=start+menu
Seems the WM6.5 honeycomb start menu is a executable called shell32.exe. If so we can shut it down with a powerful task manager like DotFred's TaskMgr.exe or let it show up in the htc task manager by registry tweak and kill it. Will report it back after I test it next week. Or anybody can test it right now?

Is there any way to have a WM 6.1 style programs list (i.e. in a new window, that can be scrolled), and also be able to use the keyboard to jusm to specific items (like hit F, and it will jump to File Explorer)?
Thanks!

thanks utak for the cab, I really like qm, BUT-.
Is there any way to have the quickmenu more "finger friendly"? (Like in the wm 6.1 "Enlarge startmenu").On my diamond, I need to use my stylus for taping the menus, cos they are so narrow.
Thank you

First off, Thanks to the OP for the original effort for this great mod. Secondly, thanks to all the other members for the assist in continuing development.
A few questions. Do we know if the app is compatible with the new manilla 2.1 with the weather on homescreen(will try it anyway)?
Second, If I use the .cab that keeps the 6.5 startmunu, will it still unload the Ram when not in use? I doubt it, but cant help but be greedy for the ram:D
Thanks and once again, great app.

It doesn't have anything to do with Manila... yes, it's working ok.

I don't know, how they prepared the cab files - it's just you have to modify few files... You can download my kitchen package and have a look inside of it, so you will know what's going on :)

I don't like quickmenu because it's not user friendly. It would be GREAT if it would look like W7 start menu. Can this be done? I think a lot of people would like this idea.
Here is SS from Win7. Fonts should be bigger so you could tap them easier. This is just example.

Never tried your recommendation, not my forte. I am an end user.. With a tiny bit of know how, nothing like you guys.
Tried it with 6.51 and it did not work. Besides, the bottom bar was not to my liking. I can say that I still use and love this cab.

utak3r,
Installed the utak3r QuickMenu_wm6.5_all_res.cab to my Axim X51v running build 28002.
It is working as describe. However some of the icons were missing from the Setting folder. Such as Home, Sounds & Notifications, Clock & Alarms, Lock.
May I know how to get this icons made available in Quick Menu?
Thanks.

Cab version 2C has the Quickmenu link inside the program folder instead Start Menu. ;)
Also, why not pre-set the registry for a more finger friendly larger font. (My personal on VGA under 6.5.3 is 19)
I have the Registry keys somewhere if you need them, but i'm sure you have these.
Or maybe even replacing the Q icon.
These are just suggestion, i can help out if you want to.
Also if you have it delayed executed it might be an idea to disable the Start up in registry for Q-Menu.

I looked under HKCU\Software\AlenSoft\QuickMenu\ but could find anything that relates to font.
Can you let me know which registry setting needs to be changed for increasing the font size?

HKCU\Software\Alensoft\Quickmenu\Display
MenuItemHieght=19
It doesn't change the font but the Menu height (Some users oversee the Menu Item Edge, as it's unclear what it does from it's name).
&
HKCU\Software\Alensoft\Quickmenu\General
AutoStart=0
So it doesn't create a shortcut in Startup.

BTW, I tried Wisbar Advance once and it has an option to choose the startmenu folder for it's startmenu ,, but WA is a messy app and eats a big part of my RAM ,,
My question, Is it possible to change the root or the path of QM or not ??!
thanx

I have a weird issue after removing this program - the USB won't connect to my computer anymore! I have tried just remove it, exit quickmenu then remove it, remove by windows program manager, remove by memmaid, all came to same result, and I use sprite to restore from the last backup.
Anyone else has this same problem? The reason I want to remove is quickmenu task switch actually doesn't work well at touchflo home screen.

I have utak3r ROM on my device, without honeycomb start menu, just quick menu.
But I want to get back original honeycomb menu, what should I do?
When I delete StartMenu button hook from autostart, then nothing happens after I tap start, so honeycomb is removed from ROM. But how to reinstall
it?
I have tried some cabs founded here, but with no succes..

I wonder. Why did you hook it up the the startbutton and make it impossible to get Honeycomb back or to ether programs and settings. Yeah I know there is a .cab to get Honeycomb back. But I cxan't enter the system to install or uninstall.I basically can't do anything at all. So it isn't working the way it should work.
I forgot the add the register entries so I am stuck with the blocks. It also seems to to be working cause I don't see my settings, nor programs So basically I am stuck. I untag "start with Windows", ext QM but after a reset it is still there. So how to remove this without doing a hardreset. The last option which is "exit"doesn't ext the QM neither like the case is with the org. version.
I am NOT very happy with this. I want to get ridd of it asap.
If I remove quickmenu it is still there amazing.
I decided tp perform a hardreset. After all I have a data backup, but.
DON't install this version of Qmenu on a TD2 with WM6.5
