What is the advantage of having a ROM other then a stock one?
What will it do to my phone?
What is a good one out right now?
Thanks.

Most Roms have a 'Update log' which tells you what has been done.

just have a read through. took me a few days of reading before i decided on one ;)

I would never advise keeping the stock rom. The custom roms on this forum, add speed, functionality, and deal with bugs which it takes HTC ages to deal with. In addition, new features available only on newer HTC models (never available on Diamonds stock ROMS), are implemented in these custom roms.

So my advice is do flash a custom rom.

Just a short advice, as to which ROM. This is a personal preference. You will see which one suits you best.

If what you are looking for is multitude of features and most up-to-date WinMobile etc., then go for one of the WM 6.5 Roms. However, this will cost you speed and overall performance, mostly for visual effects.

If what you want is speed and stability, then stick with the WM 6.1 roms. They offer almost everything you get with the first group, except the latest visual effects and a couple of minor features. I personally use a rom of this group, after trying at least 8 different roms. I am on GenY's rom, and I'm happy with it.

Cheers

And if i find one that sounds interesting and decide to try it, it will get rid of all of my stuff like contacts, and little tweaks that ive done to my phone right.

Back up your contacts, messages, calendar, etc, either through activesync with your pc, or use PimBackup, a little program which will restore these things after you are finished.

For more advanced restore options, including programs, copying files to specific directories, registry editions, etc., check out a script called sUC. But this is more advanced it might be confusing if you are just starting up. My advice, just backup contacts, etc., and flash new rom. Set it up as you go.
