Speed doesn't cause accidents, excessive speed causes accidents.
Excessive speed is speed which is beyond the control of the driver for the current situation, and the current situation includes the capabilities of the vehicle and the driver as well as road conditions.
We set arbitrary speed limits because we can't trust drivers to make these rational decisions themselves. Too many idiots will drive too fast and lose control, putting themselves and others at risk.

It's slowing down that kills you.
Going fast kills no-one. What you have to realise is that Speed Does Not Kill, it's coming to a sudden stop that kills you!!

Most of the people I hit are dead before they stop moving through the air... :D :D

The speed isn't the problem it's people tryin to do other things while speeding that creates problems. Getting your drivers license should be hard to do, maybe people would actually learn then.

The speed kills people...
The sudden stops kills people...
The people kills people...
Fast speed kill people...
A car can kill people... hehehe
Stupid people kill people... so
People more stupid than that stupid dies.... so
Everybody is stupid in the highway... then
The high way is not for stupid people but...
The highway is for faster drivers even if everybody is stupid at drive... even tho
The highway is there, and cause you are stupid the gub gonna give you aticket and get meney from you if you over pass the speed limit easy at 55... so all the population (WE) are stupid because of the gub.
I think reading that lines... You dont have the right phrase...
The right one is... If you are a stupid driver... dont go to the highway cause the limit speed gonna increase, and cause you dont have the BALLS to control your car, maybe you can make an accident and many people can die.

Going too slow is actually more dangerous than going speedy
What about Autobhan in Germany? no speed limit (at least it was back in 2001)
No matter the speed limit, the important is the consiousness every driver do about their way of driving.
Too many drunk kid driving fast, to many old people (respectfully) driving to slow, too many women driving and doing make up and calling, too many truck drivers with drugs inside.........
Anyway, how fast you can really go with traffic jam everyday everywhere...

As someone with in-depth knowledge and experience in these matters (had over $14K in tickets + late charges at one point - which I will never ever pay - ever) I can reveal the sad truth that the speed limit has nothing to do with preventing accidents. It is simply a system for control of the masses. Imagine if people were able to drive as fast as they could (as they should be...). That would increase the speed at which cops would have to drive to catch suspects, which also increases their risks and diminishes their efficiency at intercepting suspect cars, etc. The truth is that society needs a limit, so that their law enforcers can be effective without risking too much. They are the sheepdogs. We are the sheep...or the wolves in sheep clothing... Is like in the Matrix - just another level of control.

Dear God, how did you turn this thread into a Philosophy 101 discussion?
Speed limits are in place because people are idiots who think that they're Michael Schumacher or Valentino Rossi as soon as they get in / on their vehicle.
If people would just slow down, prepare properly, and not rush things the whole of the road system would be a lot safer. Following too closely, aggressive driving, and poor anticipation is what gives us speed limits. If people kept a reasonable distance, didn't drive like the road belonged to them, and actually concentrated on what was further up the road than at the end of their bonnet, speed limits wouldn't be needed.

As said Orb3000, "the important is the consiousness every driver do about their way of driving."
Leave alone the factors of drugs & drunken etc., the factors of speed on consiousness:
Speed lower than 55, driver feels really comfortable and somehow relax, which tends to cause sleepy.
With a higher speed, driver would be more nervous, less sleepy but easy to get tired.
So we got the limit on continuous driving hours.
Update: Imagine, on a national wide, if average driving speed could be 20% up. How many hours of people's time could be saved? How much green house air could be reduced? It would definitely be America's contribution to the world. Keep in mind that nearly half of the world's energy is consumed in this 'country on wheels'.

Speeding saves lives...

Tongue is firmly in cheek. :)
It's interesting being a Brit looking in on an American discussion on speed. Urban areas are typically 30mph, open roads are up to 60mph, and dual-carriageways and motorways are 70mph. If we did 55mph on a motorway, it would probably cause an accident with other motorists getting frustrated and overtaking inappropriately.
