Hi all!
I'm senior C# programmer and I want to develop a Windows Mobile Application with Compact Framework, but I want develop an useful application or tool that does not already exist. I have no limitations in programming or technology (gps, bluetooth, web services, ecc.).
Any idea/suggestion for this new app? Is there any application that is missing?

What about a proper barcode reader/interpreter using the built-in camera? There are some tentative software but no trully good one out there. Could be good for personal databases like book collection.

Yea! I know! But it is no good! If what you are after is an idea that nobody had before, than I think it will be very difficult.

Here's an idea that might be something handy you could knock out fairly quickly: a battery drain indicator. An app that polls your battery life and generates a report telling the current rate of decrease (and maybe indicates what other applications are running and how often the backlight was on).

It'd be darn useful for trying to gauge the effect different ROMs and apps have on battery life.

There is no DLNA app for windows mobile as far as i know.

Would be good just to have one that can get pics, videos, music from over dlna machines.

Or as above a app that moniters battery drain to see the worse apps and roms for battery

I second this. I've started one, but it's pretty ugly, slow and buggy as I'm in no way a C# developer and I have no time to complete it. There are several battery monitors out there, but neither of them are really usefull.

If you are interested, PM me, I can share some further ideas.

Hmm, a killer WM app? Well, I would imagine that it has to be something unique, and fairly difficult to create on other platforms or, hell, just the Windows Mobile platform.

Meh, the best idea I can come up with are these:
1) A GPS software that displays street level navigation (sort of like what was shown in Sony's new NV-U3DV).
2) A Hulu player
3) A program that scales programs/games not designed to work on a particular resolution

My, this was surprisingly difficult to think of.

Killer App, how about something that ties Windows mobile together...not some much a launcher or something like but something that smooths everything out.

Maybe a simple program that transitions the screen of current gen devices to make landscape to portrait smoother.

Maybe a cool task manager is smooth and dynamic...(opengl) that flows through the open programs similar to Coverflo (this would be amazing) mix that with functionality.

How about when you open a new program, there is an onscreen popup that shows whats opening while the app is loading up. Similar to Opera or Winterface.

Maybe a unique Locksystem different from S2u2 and G1 Locker...Something graphical and beautiful. I love the growing panel and the fish panel for xperia, having something like that for a locker would be amazing....

I have dozens of ideas. but I'd say..
Music player=covered by S2P, Kinoma, Nitrogen
Pictureviewer=covered by imageviewer, s2v
Shells= too many to name
Iphoney= ad nauseum

I think we should be focus on making PPC more functional...That SMS app is really worth the time an effort as well.

This would be cool, although being a Windows user, I'd rather it be like Aero Flip than like Coverflow. ;)

If you haven't seen it, check out TaskFacade -- it's more like Expose than Coverflow, but it's still a great app switcher with decent eye candy.

I've tried TaskFacade...love it..but it would be awesome to have a full blown beautiful app. I don't know if you've ever played around with Pocket Cm ImageViewer its amazingly beautiful. The way it displays pictures and how fingerfriendly it is it would be awesome to have taskmanager that flowed that smooth. Flick up on the application to end it, click on it to go to it. Would be amazing

how about an onscreen semi-transparent dpad that can be toggled via a button on all apps? That way for phones without dpads or with dpads hat are not functional (touch pro) you can still use a dpad. This would help in gaming but also basic navigation.

You might consider putting your talents towards the finger friendly SMS application (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=520689) in the Development and Hacking section. They have nonfunctional, graphics only alpha versions, but they need developers to actually get the application functional. There's even a $275 bounty.

Thank you. Yes, with a Hulu player, the multimedia experience on Windows Mobile would pretty much be complete (at least for me). :D

Regarding the Xbox Live app, I did find one if you want it: http://ts.zumobi.net/partner_pages/partner/xbox

A hulu player would be nice ....

If you want to do something really killer - fix the damn Micro$oft winblows VOIP thiny. Everyone wants to use it - but no one has 100% mastered getting it to fly right. There are a bunch of registry entrys and things people have tried and got it to work SOMEWHAT better - but hey make a working cab and you will for sure have the killer WM app. If nothing else you'll end up on att, sprint, t-mobile, and verizons 10 most hated list..hahahaha

Hulu is a great service, but only for US (i'm italian). I want to do a global app, for all.

There's antoher phone (not mentioning it by name) that allows you to set the background of your text/email screen to an active camera. The benefit is that if you're walking on the street you can see what's going on in front of you still so you don't step on anything. So you can email away and it's less hazardous

I want a performance optimizer. There are plenty of apps like advanced configuration and sk tools that allow you to easily vary some performance settings like the file system cache, the glyph cache and the file system filter cache. I'd like an app that would allow you to input what reg settings you would like varied, including the range to test and the step size, that would go through systematically and vary all of the settings and perform benchmark tests. At the end of the test matrix, it would give a report and show the optimum settings for each of the benchmarks. I've done some of this myself with sk tools manually, but it's a slow process (even just varying two parameters). The app would give a time estimate for the overall test (2 hours, 10 hours, 100,000 hours, lol), so you could just plug your device in overnight, if needed. It would allow you to select other registry settings than the common ones to vary (like the ones in HKCU\Performance). It would allow you to design some of your own benchmark tests. For instance, the one I like best in sk tools is the sk boot time test. This is one test that seems to transfer to the user experience the best. Perhaps you could pick a favorite app (like opera), and have the app use the opera boot time as a test parameter. Another parameter to vary would be running apps. Different people use their devices differently. One person is a multi-tasker, another isn't, and the optimum settings won't be the same. So, you could have the device run the tests with different apps running in the background. Perhaps the device would play a test song or a test video during the benchmarking process (or both). It might also test current draw as a function of the settings (although this might be difficult if the phone has to be plugged in due to time constraints).

Anyway, I'd pay for something like that if it worked (and it didn't take 100,000 hours, lol).

One thing I'd LOVE to see would be an app that allows a WM phone to natively use Google Voice's free SMS service within the existing SMS app. This is a great feature of Google Voice, but it's currently really clunky to use through WM. I have no idea if this is currently possible, but it'd sure be handy. Even if it couldn't be integrated into the native SMS client, a simple app to send and receive Google SMS would be handy.

I would suggest an ebook reader with the following functions:

Main functions

1) Reads plain *.txt files, *.rtf and simple *.html would be nice
2) Keeps track of current page on any ebook opened so far
3) Shows how far you are in percentage
4) Allows to go to any percentage directly

Advanced functions

5) Allows to use any user defined font size
6) Allows to use real full screen (no scroll bars, etc.)
7) Allows to use Gravity-Sensor for paginating
8) Allows to configure background and font colour

Killer functions

9) Press a given button and the book is read in syntesized voice from current page onwards
10) Output either to phone's speaker or through bluetooth

Finally

11) Should be freeware... ;)
12) Should allow to download ebooks directly from Gutenberg Project with its own build-in search engine

I would say that this would be the best ebook reader for Pocket PC plattform.

Cheers,
vma

messaging application. take design cues from the IPhone and Pre if you have to. both work extremely well. but i have not seen the SMS/MMS screens for WM6.5 so this may become unneeded in the near future...

same thing as above with the email application.

a transparent D pad for gaming would be great.

i know you said you wanted a global application, but i imagine it would not be impossible to trick Hulu into believing everyone is in the US.

standalone application for finding movies/theatres. i know, burn me at the stake, but an application like this would be quite nice. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0YXu7WrehPY

how about a visual voicemail application?

you could have the phone answer the call right before it times out, play your voicemail greeting and record whatever they say and put it all in a nice pretty GUI with the ability to call back/text/email

yeah, you wont be able to check them from other phones and it will take up space on the MicroSD card. but seems like the most "universal" solution. since not all carriers support Visual voicemail and i personally don't like the idea of storing all my voicemails on a third party server like all the current VVM applications i have found for WM.
