Just a question, not that it matters much. The default clock on the home screen is a certain size (small), but if you add a new one via widgets menu, it's a huge clock. Is it suppose to be like that, or is this just a minot detail to be worked out later?

It seems I am an idiot. I can't figure out what Extended Drawer is actually doing.. :\

I'm always up for testing new versions, though it might be less stressful to hold off and release a fixed version (as much as I hate waiting).

If you do decide to release a version that doesn't have everything working, you might want to note that in the file name.

Example: mssmison_rogers_system_(MARKET_NOT_WORKING).img

That way there is no excuse for ridiculous whining and complaining.

Would it be a simple deal of switching the system files to download an app from market and then switch back, or is it more than just the system file and would you have to delete widgets to go back and forth? If I just had to change out system files to get a market app no problem, or find the .apk to download and install it.

Does that mean flash and the differen't profiles to choose for your screens and perspectives? Maybe a list of what it does have working would be easier, or just figure it out ourselves when it's released. I'm quite excited

I am having trouble with Android the last couple of days, I cannot receive calls but am able to call out. Any Idea what may be the problem. I was using vilords build and had this same problem, tried yours to see if it could be fixed. Thank you again and good luck with your future builds, I will be looking forward to testing them.

Unfortunatly no, the rogers builds only work with data.img that are created by them. The builds are quite different.

Try a fresh data file. If it still does it report back with the logcat data.

Currently 100% working except market.
ugh fix one thing lose another. Can't seem to have both htcmail (with exchange support) and googletalk working at the same time... Market still throwing an error when downloading..

It's slowwwww to boot. On a fresh data file it's like 10 minutes to get into it and running. Weather app REALLY slows it down.. Once configured it runs good. You don't have to run sense ui, you can use the old regular home screen and it's not bad at all actually. Not as fast as rogers but not bad. I've updated the first post with current details.

They are all on the card lol. Just download the latest files from the google code site.

Screen orientation doesn't work for me, but I'm using a Kaiser. Is there any chance of orientation working for Kaiser with your build?

And another question: Does GPS work on Vogue? It doesn't work for me but that also might be because I'm using a Kaiser.

But, I do want to say that you have done a fantastic job. Your theme makes using Android a heck of a lot more fun (and it's better for showing off than the default theme!). Keep up the good work!

Glad to hear that the speed isn't unbearable. I'd probably end up sticking with a Rogers build since I prefer simple/snappy interfaces, but I could be wrong. Haha!


07-26-7:30- working with srwalter to get some ril stuff sorted out. Sensui is slow but the build is sweet. If we ever get installed to nand it will be amazing :)

Yea, definitely looking forward to a nand version. Hopefully that'll help solve some of our speed issues.

hey just wanted to let you know I re-downloaded the .img file and that fixed the calendar issue although it's funny before i redownloaded the .img the one i had the screen rotation worked but no calendar now the calendar is working and everything is good but the screen rotation isn't working or i should say i can put it in landscape just can't put it back without locking the phone first. Still a great job!

I can't figure out how to utilize the extended application drawer. When I open it up, it just has a blank screen. Any hint as to how I do whatever I am suppose to do with it, or send me to the documentation that explains it? I can't find that..

mssmison, My personal preference would be to work on the hero with sense ui and deal with the drawer later if you want. The drawer is a minor issue while sense ui is a big thing people are drooling over, or at least I am. Thanks again for all your work.

mssmison: thanks for a great build...i love the hidden apps drawer, really helps me keep things nice and clean that i use. I am having one issue with the new dialer. whenever i seem to make a call, the initial call vibrates (as is supposed to), then the dialer becomes the old dialer and the drawer tab to bring up the dialer becomes the old drawer tab. Not that big a deal, because upon disconnect, it goes back to new htc dialer. just thought i would mention.

Hi, another thing or two i have noticed, when i use this system image, the sharkey weather widget gives error and won't work, when i go to non mssmison img, i don't have that problem. Also, the voice dialing feature seems to work 50/50...sometimes freezing and causing reboot. I don't seem to get this error unless on this mssmison system img either. any thoughts? thanks for the best build.

The dialer didn't change just the phone.apk, so I'm not sure what change there would be. The launcher has bugs, I know. I'm going to look into updating it when I get hero running.

DZO's latest kernel seemed to fix the voice dialer for me, might need a fresh data.img. I'm not too sure. Again I'll look into it when hero's running on everyones phones.

go to the home screen, press menu, go to extended and you'll see the application drawer setting (first of three). In there are all your hidden applications. Long pressing them will allow you to put them back in the application drawer. At least I think this is how it is (i'm going from memory :D)

You made sure to copy all the files to the root of your SD card?

Same for me. Interestingly, I noticed that a few days ago I got a text in Android that definitely should have been more than one text, but Android made it into just one. I thought that was nice. I don't know if it was mssmison's build that did that though because I play around with his as well as the ones made for Kaiser.

btw, With a fresh data image (with appmanager to make apps easy to restore) the latest themed hero build really has great performance. I have only experienced my "going home" lag once while going home when the browser was still loading a page. Good stuff, good stuff.

What screen resolution are you using? It won't work with the default (320x428) but should be ok with 320x480.

Yes, you absolutely need a bigger SD card. The extracted data.img is 128MB on its own, so you should have at least 256. I'd go with at least 1GB though to make sure you have room for other things, like music, pics, etc.

I would suggest getting a class 6 card. I had to go to 4GB to find one. I was using smaller/slower cards and the system didn't run as well and they kept dieing on me.

Yes, the build from the htc hero devices, it's in beta right now.

Yep, that's all you have to do.

Also, yes, it will affect a lot of apps for the better. The Music app shows up properly, and all the apps have more real estate, so any apps that you noticed that had a squished or truncated feel to them should look more "proper" now.

No, bluetooth is a completely different issue.

With Sense UI enabled, it runs quite slow. The Hero has double the RAM that the Vogue does. To compensate, mssmison put a swap file in the mix, but with everything running off the SD card, there's a fair bit of lag. Other than that, and some bugs that seem to be related to sdhc, it's friggin' sweet.

I imagine the lag will be greatly improved once we can flash it to our phones.

The default density is 160. I believe it's the higher resolution you're using that might be making it to small. Yes, the aspect ratio will be off, but it seems like 320x480 really is the best to use.

As for overclocking, I know dzo mentioned something about it a while back... I think it's just an option in default.txt, but I can't recall what it is for the life of me. Overclocking the CPU won't likely speed up the Hero build very much, as the issue is lack of RAM and slow disk media.

overclocking is set in the default.txt.

edit: nvm i read it wrong, the phone seems to be stable at 480, but of course we'll find out later if that's true or not when it melts

Probably, but it works perfectly with 320x480, so I'm probably not going to bother trying anything else. I did enough messing around with the resolution on the Ion/Cupcake builds to realize that I should really just stick with 320x480. :P

we in the kaiser forum certainly appreciate these killer builds and it seems like most of the time the system.img from both you and vlord are compatible with our kaisers.

Long story short, i was just hoping someone could let me know if beta testing for this rom was being done by any kaiser users, and if so how is it going?

You don't have the same processor as the Hero. I believe the HTC Magic has the exact same processor.

We have similar processors, but yeah.. some differences I am sure, technology wise.

There was a way to change your speed I thought, in the default.txt, but don't quote me on that. Might wanna search around.

anyone have a problem with the notification bar not dragging down? for some reason mine will only show if i tap using a stylus or the down slider to hit notifications button. it seems to happen on both my hero system img AND the regular image...my finger cannot drag it down (it just goes to widgets whenever i try for an extended sec. or two)

Just a comment on the theme. On the welcome screen is it possible to indicate the phone is charging? I miss that a little from the old one. Sometimes my charger acts up and doesnt make a good connection and doesnt charge.It'd be nice to confirm connection to the power source.

Its an actual Hero build, not a theme. Its actually really good looking on the Vogue but do to the lack of ram and everything being ran off the microsd card, it can slug at times but mostly, its pretty darn fast. Now only if Jesse and Derek can solve the NAND flash issue, then we can run Hero from the built in memory and it should be wicked fast.

You use the exact same resolution/density settings as on the Ion build. As always, 320x480x160 seems like the way to go. It looks amazing.

It's very very sluggish running of the SD card (maybe it's just my SD card though, I'm actually booting up on a non-sdhc one right now to sort some things out) and I don't think I'd want to keep it as my main phone OS until we get a flashable image.

It runs very well when touchflo is disabled. Touchflo just takes up too much ram. So you get the advantages of rogers, (dialer, exchange) with a whole bunch of theming, new messaging app, people app with facebook support, and hero apps etc. The challenge we're stuck at right now is that it's not mounting sdhc cards. Regular sd seems to work fine.
I'm heading out for some more vacation on saturday and really want to get this out publicly before I go.

Sorry. Yeah, oxsolid is a member who posted some settings for default that work well. I had my own that I got from the old blue keyboard method, but his seem to work even better. Seems to account for finger width and such.

THANKS!! I found the other postings as well and tried to learn about the screen size, but i am still a little confused by it all. i played around with xmin etc., is there any way to get just the top notification bar a little bigger (or for that matter, just the area that responds to my finger touch -not the visual bar itself). When i edited the default text, I didn't like the icon size (too big for me) and my calendar widget etc. could no longer fit all the type it etc. All just a little too bloated. Can i keep it small looking and just make it more sensitive OR just make the top bar bigger??

Any tips appreciated...I hope i am not wasting time on a little issue, if so just tell me.

sorry about that, still learning my way around...

I searched and read everything i could about the voice dialer, for some reason in my mssmisonsystem.img file, voice dialer still freezes until i soft reset...it no longer crashes. i have all the latest files...if i swap system.img, or nk02, or nkhero it works fine...but can't figure why it freezes. any thoughts?? i have waited as long as 10 min. and it never goes back w/o soft reset.

waiting on ur hero build mssmison, pls release the lite version atleast today... really really anxious to start using the new system... been using ur hero themed build for quite some time and now android has become my regular daily OS... hardly switch to WinMo now except for copying the latest system image files or some such.. not really a big fan of using dos adb to copy files..:)

but can't wait for the new ROM... is there anyway to save all the customizations which i did until now and all the apps i downloaded ? i read on the htc dream forums that they have a small app to just back up everything to sdcard.. and hopefully with the new image we get some nice full screen dialer... hate the standard android dialer right now..

and if possible, can u please get the app to do button remapping out please, i am really hesitant to use the volume control sooo much as it looks like it might stop working after sometime..

yes, currently we are. It's not too oval. donut supposidly support resolution scailing better so we'll see what happens with that.
You're welcome to try other resolutions but reports are it doesn't boot with anything but 320x480

SMS Backup from Market is great. Put in your Gmail username and password and it'll automatically save all your texts to your gmail account with a SMS label attached to them. It doesn't keep one contacts conversations all threaded together unfortunately, I'm not sure if it splits it up by days or what, still good free program.

That seems like a weird dependency to me. Have to have weather in order to tell time, we're not using sundials, ha.

yeah, but they are sent for sure. I just clear the notification.

It downloaded at around 300 for me.
Since there's only a few files in the data.img it compresses nicely. Gets down to 36.1mb for zip, and 33.1 for rar. I'd provide an alternate download for it, but I don't want to start confusing people with branches if there's an update to it.

I want to test out both builds, but I'm waiting for a call :P.



Question: Does the initrd.gz include the radio reset updates that are in initrd-2009-07-30.gz ?

I'm not interested in playing with button mappings. I really like the way that it is, so I'll leave that to people who want to change it.
As for the rogers build I'm still working on getting it to mount the sd card. That's all that's left to do. I don't really have an eta and I'm heading for vacation tomorrow so unless I hear back and get the files I think I need than it might be a while.

I deleted the data img again and re-added it and ran herolite. this time i got to the setup screen, passed all the google setup stuff and it just rebooted as it should, it's now on the "hero" screen for about 5 minutes.

So that's further then i got before, i am just goign to let it run.

Edit: Thanks, my default didn't have that option. Still showing 30 minutes just to transfer the 3 hero files to my sdcard through my phone. Wish I had an adapter, I only assume it'd be a faster transfer that way. I need a new sd card as I'm using the stock slow one but has done fine on the ION or 1.5 builds. If the word is that hero is considerable faster on a newer card when it's supported, then I'll have to try getting one.

any zimage will work, density has to be set in the default.txt

should be in the default.txt. says 160 is default density, otherwise.. lcd.density="160"

Should probably just use the latest zImage.. if one was not provided..

I am on a Sprint Vogue and I don't have any experience with ADB, but I got it to the point where it says 'waiting for device'... Phone should be booted to Android and plugged in via USB, correct? I did install the .inf file... If someone else gets it to you, great, but if not let me know what I am doing wrong with ADB...

I downloaded everything like you said and the hero build full and on the Hero screen like when it starts and the little android guy screen on the beginning keeps repeating itself.. it never started..

Then I've got black screen with notification bar (not dragable). End key works, home/power brings it back to the new lock screen, but that's about all of it's functionality.

Got it up to htc screen. Keeps periodically chiming on me but still on htc screen first run before boot. Still waiting.

Question is can you use same data img between the full and lite versions? have to delete htc widgets first? thanks

Edit: keeps going between htc and Hero screen with a chime each time. Trying to find out what is normal, I know it says it takes a long time, just haven't seen anything said. And for future people to know what to expect as well.

Yes, I keep on clicking wait, but then one will popup and there is no option for wait, it is just a big button for "force close" (I think it is the popup for .acore)

Thanks, I'll be sure to delete my old one before downloading then to make sure I don't get mixed up. Was their a change or did you just want to make sure it didn't get corrupted?

No problems mssmison, everyone here understands. We either don't have complete noobs here, or everyone here knows how programming works. Just seems weird it worked for your testers and this doesn't. Have any of your testers tried downloading the files and seen if these work for them?

Apparently the system I was using was lite even though I thought I'd grabbed the full system. The file sizes didn't match up once I checked it out. So apparently it was the lite version that was doing the infinite loop for me, trying full now.

Any free free software to format the sd card through the phone? I have no adapter.

Apparently I'd grabbed the lite by mistake and it did not work for me. From what mssmison posted, it looks like he got it figured out and neither were working. He's updating the lite to a new version that should fix the problem. He'll fix the full and upload it whenever he gets home and around to it.

Using the files that mssmison posted with the second lite file, forgot the data file, finally got to do all the setup and it rebooted. It's not looping just going to sleep on the HTC page. Going to let it sit for a bit I guess, and that still fails I'll try the zip files I just downloaded.

should be lcd.density=160 without the quotes. previous cupcake work (vilrod, dzo, mssmisionsystem.img on google code), lcd.density was automatically 160 if no value was in default.txt.

I used quotes, didn't seem to throw issues up, but still won't boot after setup. I'll take them out and try. This is after formatting, will format before each new file system now

I tap on the HTC Mail widget and nothing happens even though it says tap anywhere on this message to set up your mail. I used your data.img mssmison so not sure what's up with that. doesn't bother me. Just wanted to see how it would display the gmail, or does it not work for that?

Yeah, turned on GPS still no luck yet. Also having trouble getting contact data from facebook so link with contacts. The new HTC apps are really slick though. Great work gettin this going mssmison.

Texting will still work, just ignore the error. I remember reading about that somwhere earlier in the thread.

Also, I am dumb and didn't notice the update option to bringdown the the contacts from facebook. So that works fine.

I have gps and the wireless options turned on and google maps found me. Does google maps show the satellite dish icon when you bring up google maps? I turned off the wireless location and google maps still found me with gps only.


I did the login for my facebook but there's no facebook app that I can find. How does the social thing work?

The facebook sync is in contacts. Open contacts select one of your contacts and you'll see tabs on the bottom where you can get their facebook status etc..

The gallery system of scrolling through pictures is very nice though. What about people you have as friends on facebook but nothing in your address book for? I'd rather them just made a separate facebook app.

What files are you using?


Format your sd card.

Download the hero.zip which contains the system.img initrd.gz and data.img

Download the newest zimage and default.txt from vilords google code site.

Open up default.txt and make sure panel type is correct, then add in lcd.density=160 after the height and width commands at the bottom. Save that making sure the command line is a single line, no breaks. Make sure the settings are: mddi.width=320 mddi.height=480 lcd.density=160 (thanks akyboy)

Transfer all those files plus haret.exe to the root of your sdcard.

Run haret and it should work.

Unless you have one of the sdcards that mssmison said he couldn't get working yet. So what kind of sd card do you have?

Oh, which clock are you trying to use? The big digital clock that is part of sense ui will not work at all. It is broken by removing the weather part of it which severely lagged out the system on the vogue apparently.

Edit: Went to People, events and updates, but didn't say anything about matches. It shows one person who isn't in my contacts and that's it. Doesn't even show updates from my facebook page from all those contacts. Edit: it finally came up, but for only 4 people

I also see it links to m.facebook.com instead of x.facebook.com like the browser does.

The facebook part has blacked out my screen twice now, and not for standby mode.

I know you are not developing for polaris, but just wanted to fyi you, with the new package it's doing the same thing for me (lock screen works, notification appears, but can't do anything with it, and it's just a black screen).

I reformatted my card etc, will try mixing and matching files. maybe my polaris does not like your initrd or something.

edit: oh and i can shut down just fine, that menu works :D
