I have a really weird bug....in my network adapter settings.....i cant enter 3 digit numbers for my IP address. So, 192.168.1.1 is not possible...as i'm able to only input 19.16.1.1 :(
Any idea what could be wrong?
thanks!
Generally speaking it's only QVGA problem. For the future:
1. Recmode tshres.dll.0XXX.mui
2. Open it with Restorator
3. Find Dialog 12044
4. Edit field length (default 64 - make minimum 70). Do that for all three fields (IP address, Subnet mask and Default Gateway)
5. Save mui and reversmode it back. That's it.

Hate to tell them (Microsoft). Everyone and their immediate friends and family already have all of their new buggy builds. And once they are uploaded onto the internet there is no stopping it.. They shouldnt even of released such untested junk to begin with. But thats neither here nor there.. Maybe thats why they are so upset. Because those builds arent included on any New Phones yet. They are still using COM2 and earlier because those builds are official releases on some New Phones. These new COM3, 4, and 5 builds are most likely still in Beta Testing and someone is leaking them early..
I dont use these new builds because I am aware of the problems they have.

i agree, i thought the smart thing to do was to release a finished product then release updates after, even tho i use 6.5, there are still too many bugs in the builds, these leaked builds including the builds on the new 6.5 devices certainly aint a finished product...maybe M$ will release a finished WM when apple responds to windows mobile in terms of hardware and multitasking

Does MS not realise it cannot control the net, as much as they'd like to!! Also, its people like Da_G and all the guys here on XDA the the bugs/problems/issues are being found and fixed - They should be paying XDA- all here do better work than the dev team at MS!
I guarantee that MS has been aware and tracking the releases here and reading the feedback.

These builds are just taken from QA. AKA the successful builds that pass certain testing. These are BUILDS, not releases.

Ok guys, I've screwed up somewhere and can't figure out where. I'm currently running 21872, works great. But I have this one issue. See pics below. My message screen is missing the "send' option. I have to tap the far bottom-left corner to send my messages. What package did I screw up? I hoped switching builds would help, but it's obviously in my EXT. But I don't recall adding/switching anything. Anyone with an answer? Thanks guys, for everything you do.

This same notice with the exact same verbiage has been sent to other people that had in no way violated any copyright.
Here's the thing -- these words:
2. Copyright infringing material or activity found at the following location(s):

http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...43&postcount=1
The above copyright work(s) is being made available for copying, through downloading, at the above location without authorization of the copyright owner.
This is implying XDA is hosting these files for download, when in fact it is linking to another site that is hosting these files. If anything, the douchebag that sent this notice should have sent it to the file hosting provider.
The same thing happened to this group that was talking about Windows 7 beta, and lo-and-behold its the same takedown notice with the same lame verbiage.

I cant believe MS can be so shortsighted. This was what kept the WinMo community active and going. We all love WinMo because our devices are moddable beyond recognition unlike all other OS-based devices out there. Throwing the towel on this will only kill the community and make things worse for MS. They sure dont want people switching to Android, do they?
bah....feels terrible, sucks. Please take this back MS....for everyones good

WOW, if MS would have to be grateful, we investigate and remove the bugs and faults that tend to have them in SYS, except that each of us have acquired a license with our WM devices whether or not other versions, and the reason an attempt is made to research and develop on this platform is none other than the need for software that we sell work properly and had no faults with which we sell as final versions.
In short, this is still one more time the suspicion of a company that is increasingly declining.

You have to remember, this is most likely another hoax, not by MS. Flar and the other admins are just covering their a$$es just in case this is the real deal. By the verbage and the places it was sent, this is a shotgun hoax. Look how many places were hit. Even those who had nothing to do with it. Give it a few days and everything will be back to normal.

Even IF it is real, it's probably not from MS anyway. It would most likely be from some company that MS hired to find windows "warez". They see a download link to Windows, and assume that it's a pirated copy for people to download. The end even says "internet investigator", and he probably get's a fee for finding "offending" sites that offer pirated MS products .

I downloaded all the needed files last night but didn't grab this:
Language Localization Packages - build 23081
0409 USA English United States (Includes COMMON DPI, required for others)
http://rapidshare.com/files/297503914/WM65x-23081-CE-OS-5-2-4123-LANG-0409-DPI-ALL-RESH-ALL-RESV-ALL.rar
When I try to build a Rom with the Files that I do have, I get the following error message:
unhandled exception has occurred in a component in your application.
Could not find a part of the path
"C:\XDA\OEM\Rhodium\0409\OEM_Lang_0409\config.txt"
Am I correct in assuming until I can download the Language Localization packages for English I will not be able to complete this or am I making some other type of newb mistake.
I did try to search for Config.txt in this thread but only found references to an alternate location. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks to Da_G for providing this Thread, Hope all works out with MS this was an epic work in progress.....

@all:
There are numerous speculations about the take down notice. If one takes a moment to look at the Edits (ex: Post #1 -> Last edited by Flar; Today at 10:41 AM..) on the post in question, you will note that they were done (in some cases) by or instructed to be done by Flar.
I know it's frustrating, but there's no need to be rude to each other ... I'm sure members would appreciate it if the tone of this thread remained helpful as opposed to being filled with derogatory comments/flaming - which serves little to no purpose.
Last thing we want is to have to close this thread.

Nothing should have been taken down. The 'offending' forum posts in the email go to a 404 not found page. Thus there is nothing to take down because the offending webpages do not even exist.
That bit said, it's still another fake email... All evidence points to that conclusion, you'd be almost silly to think otherwise - Ahhh saw hilaireg's post...

Everyone may well think this was a hoax, but as far as the site admin knows it's not.
Now, wouldn't it be better that you lost access to one particular build, than MS tried to take down the whole site? I'm certain if MS wanted to XDA could be removed from the internet pretty much instantly.
The files we've been privileged to have shouldn't have been available to anyone other than the WM development team and some OEMs, we're lucky we've had anything, so stop moaning about Microsoft taking your stuff away!
Hopefully, Da_G will get us a new build, and everything will be back to how it was a few weeks ago, but in the mean time, can we please do what hilaireg suggested, and keep this place productive, or we will lock the thread.

I agree completely. Its not a right for us to redistribute copyrighted data. And for those that are saying that we have licenses as our phones come with WinMo the truth is that those licenses only apply to the versions of WinMo released for our devices by HTC. As it stands the majority of people here Don't have a license to use 6.5 and wont till they buy a device with it. So please everyone stop being so upset over this and be glad that we've gotten the builds we have. /rant

VK fills slot1 first, then fills slot0, any recmoded files will save space in slot0. Even if they WERE in slot 1 before, removing from slot1 will make space for something else in slot one, so another module will be moved from slot0.

My device can be a bit slow at times and I was wondering if I should map out my memory differently. I'm using an opal so there isn't a 6.5 NK so all i get is 0 and 1. I'm a noob so I could use a bit of help. Any reply is greatly appreciated.
My hex math may not be so good, lol (maybe Hilaireg can correct me), but this is what I get for you in slot 0. First, I just converted the hex to decimal.
02000000 = 33,554,432; 01630000 = 23,265,280
So, 0x02000000 - 0x01630000 = 10,289,152 bytes
10,289,152/1024 = 10.048 MB.
That means you have ~22 MB free in Slot 0, which is probably not terrible, but who the hell am I to say? Maybe look for a few big dll's and recmod them, but I don't think you have to go totally crazy.

There's a thread here (http://www.everythingdiamond.info/showthread.php?t=490) that has some good tips on what modules to recmod.
Using that guide got me down to 11 in slot 0. Should I try and get lower? I still have several modules in my OEM folder. Which ones can I convert?
asyncmac.dll
battdrvr.dll
bthuart.dll
CameraDriver.dll

To be honest, that's not bad.

Target isn't to have SLOT0 free, but to have enough VM free. We doesn't count "how much modules" but "how much VM". If you have around 24MB free, it is good. If you have around 28MB free, it is awesome. ;)
But as anything -- too much hurts so watch out.

I believe you can recmod all modules but the side effect is you'll get slower performance. Further more, when they are in files form and when they are loaded during runtime, they would use up the available ram. So you might be getting less available ram. When they are in module form, they would be loaded and run directly without using additional ram (unless they allocated ram themselves).
Let say file X is 1MB. In file form, before running it, WM would load the image (which is 1MB) into the ram. Then run it from there. So, in this case you'll lose 1MB of ram when you run X. Of course it would use extra if X allocate ram for its own use. In module form, WM does not load the image (which is 1MB) into the ram. Instead it would be run directly, thus saving you 1MB of ram (compared to when it was in file form)
Note: Please correct me if I am wrong regarding this.

Balance is what I was always trying for. Usually the same 24 to 28, but I typically end up around 24 with different amounts of modules.

Native kernels make slot 0 being empty very easy, though to be honest, I've noticed no real performance gain...

The gain for slot 0 being empty/low is not so much for performance, but to prevent running into "Out Of Memory" errors when your system has plenty of physical memory left;
If your Virtual Memory is full-up you could have hundreds of MB of free Physical RAM remaining, but not be able to use it :)

Hey barbapappa_86,
I tried the fix (not sure if its the same one). It was a replacement *.dll and cprog.exe. I tried it a few builds ago and it did fix the scroll bar but i had an issue that as my phone dialer would normally popup after reset and i could enter my pin, after i applied the fix it didn't do it, i had to press the call button to see the dialer to enter the pin. Not really a big problem i know and i don't know if it was the replacement dll/cprog or the build at the time. Heres a file - it is on this site somewhere but i don't know the original poster but all credit go to them.
BTW, i used it with HTC Phone Canvas 4.0.52619192527.WAlien

I hope I found a bug of a build and not of OEM, cause it will take a ton of time to find out what is wrong there.
I am cooking for myself (Diamond) and recently upgraded OEM to 2.11 and SYS/XIP to 21872. And the alarm is not ringing when the lockscreen is activated. Moreover it now counts as reminder (plays the sound set to reminders and only once and not in lockscreen) while in previous builds it was on its own with its own melody that was imposssible to change.
And if anybody knows: since I began cooking 6.5 for my Diamond I was unable to get 3d working. For example Spb Mobile Shell 3.5. On official ROM it works well with setting "Use 3D accelereation". The pictrure is rendered by hardware and everything is fast, especially the carrousel. On my ROMS when the setting is on and I press carrousel button in Shell the phone just freezes. I didn't make any changes to OEMs (it was the same with OEM from latest official ROM - 2.03, and with 2.11) or add any additional 3D drivers.

None for me on a fuze. People have said that custom sips don't work, but I've got FNKBD working fine. There's also been mention of sleep issues, but I can turn mine on and off fine, and it goes to sleep when inactive when it's supposed to. The lockscreen works fine out of the box, too. I think it's a good build. I love the customizable beta message.

Actually this kind of problems should be related to either not enough page pool or slot0 free space as I find out on my P750.
I will write more on that later, but a tips is you can find out how many slot0 space left by using imgfstodump and looking at the memorymap file generated (You need at least 20MB for a truly stable system).

I don't think that's correct;
I have seen my blackstone not recover from sleep (seems to be when something is using cpu cycles when it goes to sleep)
it's only happening for me on 23081 not any of the other current builds including 23502
according to build log from vk I have
Slot0 is empty
43mb of Vm free

Small graphic glitch while Phone canavas incoming call screen pops up.
For some reason I get a home screen's transparent top bar with the incoming call screen. Also it seems that some graphics is missing just under the top bar as I can see a small portion of my home screen wallpaper. Is anyone experiencing the same problem.

It's due the new layout, which moved the screen's "visible" part a bit more top.

I have a problem with wm6.5 (build 23081 and older). The MS media-player does not play videos. It only plays the sound but no picture. With TMPC everything works fine. Am I the only one with this problem. There are all media related folders cooked in my rom but I recmodded some modules. Could this be the problem? I also added mhubvo in my kitchen but that changed nothing.

Normally you need mHub + DShow. But if you cook in newer DShow (Tachi, Leo), you need mHub + mHubVO + DShow.
But I see that you already added in mHubVO. Maybe they are from different version?

If your device doesn't have mHub, don't worry about it...
Use the ones from your device originally for now.

No there is not. The dialer itself can be fixed by adding ExtStyle to the loading *.dll. Meaning you don't have a scrollbar in the dialer, but the incomming call and call history is still incorrect.
This is because HTC uses hard-coded coordinates for their applications, you will find them in the XML and *.DLL files. Some you can change, but I haven't found the right coordinates for the dialer yet.
Thanks, so I guess there's no fix for it yet?

Hi all, I'm having a little problem with ervius kitchen. I have a different phone so i have dumped all files from rom and put them into ervius. Everything runs fine until near the end when i get the following:
------------------------------------------------------
SRPX file compressor/uncompressor. (c) XCCX 2008-02-16
------------------------------------------------------
[ ERROR ] Destination file true already exists. Please delete it to continue.
The system cannot find the file specified.
The system cannot find the file specified.
Out fat file exist, erasing it
After this it continues and builds the temp.dat but after flashing it sticks on the first boot screen. I know i have seen this before and i think it was a wrong file in kva folder but for the life of me i can't remember.
Any help appreciated, Thanks

Thanks killzone that explains a lot. Yeah I know about the scrollbar fix, have been using it for a while.:) Well I guess I will have to learn to live with it for now. Now, since we're discussing layout and graphics problems how about this:
I have had this missing graphics issue since build 23071. On the left side of the "contact photo" there's a missing graphic and again I can see my wallpaper. Is that a bug or maybe I made some mistake while removing "not needed" files from my SYS folder before cooking. I'm perfectly sure that I've seen a rom somwhere that didn't have this issue.

It didn't help! I made 2 videos with the build in camera (with htc camera-app). One M-JPEG and one MPEG-4 video. Both videos can be watched with CorePlayer without problems.
With MS WMP I get these results:
1. no DShow and no mHubVO:
only sound but sound is ok.
2. DShow+mHubVO from HTC Mega:
WMP gives error-message that it cannot playback these files (no sound and no video)
3. DShow+mHubVO from HTC Jade:
only sound but sound in MPEG-4 is corrupt
4. DShow+mHubVO from old (WM6.1) Wizard Kitchen:
only sound but sound in MPEG-4 is corrupt
All modules in "MediaOS" are recmodded. Any idea? Anyone with the same problem with MS WMP?

I spoke about the issues I found with COM3, 4, and 5 builds including the dialer problems. The scrollbar problems happen when you cook in another dialer. The today screen shows through a 5 pixel sliver (or so) through most apps. The stock dialer is GSM so any CDMA users will experience "stuck data arrows". Also the fix for the scrollbar issue in dialer is also only for GSM.

Actually only on the 6800, later phones separated the data arrows function out of phonecanvas.
The tachi phone canvas thread contains a couple rhodium canvas cabs and a VGA hack by amarullz that I use for 6.5.1 to have a working CDMA VGA dialer. my only beef with it is the video call and conference functions which wont work for CDMA.

Actually DCD, the "stock dialer" meaning not cooking one in. So I think you mean to say the QVGA 96 dpi versions only have that problem. Although the dialer files are in the SYS files which are universal to all forms of WM devices. The DPI is what matters for resolution.
O well just trying to help out. Thats not the only problem I listed if you follow the link in my post, and then another link to my thread where I listed the problems. Just one of the many that I have experienced.
Edit: All builds even before these new UI, including 6.1 if you use the Dialer that comes with the build and are using CDMA most likely the data arrows will also stick. But like I said its not the only problem these new builds have..

Actually DCD, the "stock dialer" meaning not cooking one in.
O well just trying to help out.
no, what im saying is that your stock rom incorporates the data arrows grey/white function into the phonecanvas package. when you use a gsm version of htc's phonecanvas, or the WM stock dialer, your data arrows wont dim anymore, as you know.
later CDMA devices instead incorporate this function into cdma_rssi_ppc.dll, which is independent of phonecanvas. you can remove phonecanvas, use the WM stock dialer, or use a GSM phonecanvas, and still have your data arrows dim.
just trying to help out too... i dont know if you can use our cdma_rssi_ppc, i would assume its built for 192dpi.

Actually this kind of problems should be related to either not enough page pool or slot0 free space as I find out on my P750.
I will write more on that later, but a tips is you can find out how many slot0 space left by using imgfstodump and looking at the memorymap file generated (You need at least 20MB for a truly stable system).
In my cooked rom i has 0 modules in slot0 so this is not an issue for me but i use a small page pool (4 mb) as i am using elf with only 64mb ram and my free ram is usually 18-22mb

Thanks DCD, if I ever get the urge to try out a COM3, 4, or 5 build again I will try what you mentioned (even though I think I did, it was about a month ago and that cdma_rssi_ppc looks familiar, I think I deleted it after a "no go"). I have tried all the various tpcutil.dll and cprog fixes out there to no resolve.
I think the fixes solved the data arrows sticking, and the other scrollbar issue, but what about only being able to open the dialer once per soft reset on CDMA devices after applying the various fixes? Thats what I have experienced. I may give it another shot, but its going to take more than just a beta leaked release to get me to go past COM2 again..

well, i think anymore, the differences between CDMA/GSM dialers have been pretty much found, with a few reg adjustments you can drop a newer GSM dialer into a CDMA device and go, ##codes and 911GPS still function. With the exception of the data arrows, you might try the 2g dialpad from HTC mega, match dll-oem=phonecanvas.dll and a few regs from cdma oemdrivers. I have built a few kaiser roms using it with the EXSTYLE patch and they work great, but thats on a GSM device, so im just speculating - my titan took a shit.

The text colour is presumably related to the theme, and if you have a light wallpaper, you'd probably darken the text colours anyway...

Da_G the letter you received is fake, tbh, it's nearly exactly the same as the other fake ones we've received at other WM related forums. Also the # of case is never to be seen in a letter to report you that you are infringing a copyright.
Next, the letter isn't well written nor does it contain segments of the terms of use and laws that could validate their objection. If a company like Microsoft would actually send you a real complaint, they need to do it according to the rules, and my opinion as a lawyer, it's not an official constructed complaint letter.
Also, Microsoft would directly take your website down and contact the webmaster to change the asked things they don't agree with, and then get the site back online. The next step would be investigating how big the infringment was and eventually suing.

I was looking through a dumpmem.txt file to find things to convert to modules, because I basically have slot 61 empty, and kept seeing rsaenh.dll appearing as a module for a lot of processes with the description 'RAM from ROM' (which means it's a file), and I figured it was a perfect candidate (it's also pretty big). Long story short, the device wouldn't boot. Don't do it right before you think you're going to bed, lol. I guess there's a reason that a big .dll in the OS folder is not a module, when everything else is. Whodathunkit?

I believe you are right about that there was a different picture in the contacts app before, however I haven't seen that in any other build than 23412 (the first release with this new contacts application). Since then every other build will just show the today background. It's not actually 'missing', since it actually draws that picture there, meaning it's supposed to work like that. I'm not sure if you can change the image (without changing the today image) since I've not looked for that. I will try to find if there are any registry keys pointing to a file (see if we can find something...).
edit: I went over the registry and didn't find anything usefull... At first glance it seems there is no file or registry key pointing to a file for the image drawn in the contacts app. This doesn't necessarily mean it can't be done, but it means that we (as in actually me) currently do not have the right key and corresponding value (I can't randomly start trying all kinds of keys).

Bad thing:

I don't believe MS has the legal authority to 'directly' take down a web site unless you are hosting your site on their servers. IMO, RIAA and MPAA have more power and control over content on the web and even they can't 'directly' take down a web site. They send a letter with logs of your activity/content and ask your ISP to stop you. I assume MS would do the same with your ISP or web host service provider.

If it's true, in M$ works clinical idiots: stop this non-payment test arena.

Is there a way to disable the ugly/non-6.5 friendly contacts application in 23081(6.5.*)? Whenever I type on the homescreen or use the talk button, it uses the old contacts app... Any idea what is happening? When using this, the contacts get all distorted if i scroll.

1. Open your OEMAPPs RGU and your initiflashfiles.dat.
You will notice that registry settings and iniflashfile entries are seperated by programs. The RGU will show you the version of the programs embedded.
(Sometimes, you will have to search for the programs's version by looking at their properties.)
2. Download an existing package that matches your version.
3. Remove the files, registry settings and initflashfile entries that correspond to it.

You will see how fast it could happen. Microsoft just needs to show one thing, software being illegaly distributed, and by seeing the rapidshare links, they could already do it. And don't think these agencies concering internet monotoring and such, will hesitate, most of them have contracts with the multinationals regarding this.
It rarely happens, but one valid complaint and this site is offline untill it's cleaned up with all microsoft related items that were infringed.
Also a good tip for the admin, if Microsoft would really consider sending you a legal letter, it would be :
a) by signed letter
b) not with a microsoft email, but with an email of the lawyer or juridical team
c) quote the fragments of the TOU and laws that correspond with the case

Well... after dumping that old build and want to get the titanium and images like old style i realize that i need the bronze and 96 dll's (im qvga) then i saw that it has some stretch on th clock image... then the source icons for voicemail and phone plugins are missing (maybe that plugins werent available in that times) the lock slider was a lil big so...
I must to redo the image layer by layer... and the glossy BG for start menu was sooo intense i decrease the intense a lil so... advices are always welcome!! :p
So... in com3 it looks like this:

I posted universal patcher for shell32 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=4548867#post4548867). You can do that by yourself on every build.
If the build does not contain bomb - patcher will do nothing. So if you are not sure - just patch the module. That's it.

select file named "S000"
click "Start" in the patcher window

Thanks for the reply. I think it is because I am using gwes from an old com4 build, but cant remember which off hand. Also, my custom theme contains the reg entries from the newer builds still. So yes, skinned buttons and checkmarks :) If I figure out exactly how it happened I will share the gwes and stuff to make it work. Is there any Ralphael cooks in here that could help me out.? I'm looking for a super stripped down WM6.5.1 23081 ROM for TouchPro. Nearly everything that can be installed later via CABs (without any ill effects) I prefer them to not be included in the ROM.
I recently came from the Wizard and their cooks are very good in maximizing the speed and ROM for that older device. Now with a Fuze I cannot seem to find a ROM that squeezes out the same. NRG has 100-110MB free RAM. The lightest one I found so far (Tomolol's stock-like) has 120-130MB. The official HTC WM6 has an even better 150MB free out of 193MB free, but I love the look of WM6.5.1.
If there is no cooks that could assist me, I'm thinking about cooking my own. Is there a kitchen with the latest 23081 build that someone can recommend for a wannabe chef?
Thanks in advance.

WM6.5.1 eats up more RAM compared to WM6. That might be the reason why the official HTC WM6 has 150MB free of RAM upon boot up.
Anyway, you can't really say that a clean ROM would guarantee you that you have more RAM. A clean ROM should have more Storage space, instead of more free RAM. A good ROM should balance the use the RAM to speed up the device. In my opinion, if the free RAM is 64MB upon bootup (Raphael) and it is fast, why not? I don't think you could actually really use up all the 64MB running apps anyway.
So, I would say that we should not judge whether it is a clean ROM or not by looking at the free RAM upon boot up. Instead the free Storage space should be used to judge that it is clean or not.
Farmer Ted
2nd November 2009, 03:10 AM
6.5.1 definitely eats RAM. My current builds with 23081 start with about 140 mb free ram, then level off around 120 mb after an hour of usage. Gwes.exe gets up to around 25 mb in dotfred's task manager. But it works great. I'm using a 12 mb pagepool. That has a direct impact on available ram. Also, I use the stock dialer. The htc dialers eat an extra 8-10 mb. You can control most of this with the caches and pp and apps running on startup.

Well having less applications installed that I won't use means...less registry entries, less junk files in the Windows folder and potentially less DLLs running in the background. And therefore could mean a faster and more stable ROM.
Like when you install a bunch of software in Windows, there is a lot of stuff behind the scene that gets loaded up even if the application isn't running. That's why nLite and vLite were created to strip down Windows XP/Vista and lean it out and why I run Windows XP Performance Edition on my main PC (it looks the same but runs faster and less resource hog). My same thinking is with these Windows Mobile phones. Plus by running the lightest resource/ram Windows could help us run Android on top of it even faster.
Let me just point out some simple things that can be done beyond installing less OEMs. Having 3600 files in the Windows root folder has to have a slight effect on performance. I could use SPB Calc with 2 images instead of the HTC Calc with 136 images. There are CPRs that aren't for my device - those should be deleted. All these useless HTM/CSS help files. 50+ files for each of the pre-installed themes. Start icons which should go it their own folder and should be installed later so they can be overwritten and icon themes created. KBD files. Shortcuts -- I don't get why we have extra ones in the Windows root folder...when they are all in the Start Menu folder anyways.
And for the figures I was also just comparing how a Wizard with 64MB RAM can get 31MB max with WM5 (Faria) and 28MB max with WM6.5.1 (md_bluelily), that's pretty close. Only 3MB drop for all that UI improvement.
Da_G in his Ralphael WM6 got almost 160MB free. So I'm thinking a clean TP ROM with minimal OEMs could maybe get 140MB. And I'm not talking about reducing PP or buffers just to gain RAM at the cost of speed. Faria, md_bluelily, and Da_G's ROMs are all very quick.
Sorry I'm just OCD when it comes to performance and optimization.
Farmer Ted
2nd November 2009, 03:35 AM
Since you're mr. ocd, you should just do it yourself. What you want to do is pretty easy. Just download Da_G's 23016 kitchen, then port in the sys/xip for 81 (get the new NK.exe, too), and you'll be golden. There's a ton of crap you can clean out of windows, like icon images and start menu links. You may also be a candidate for extendir, although it seems to be tricky to cook in.

As Farmer Ted suggested, it's best that you cook your own ROM to suit your taste because you would have the power to control what you want with your ROM :)
Anyway, in my opinion, if the files are cooked in but the apps are not run/running, no RAM would be used up. Well, of course the registry would be pretty much filled, but so far, most oem packages don't use much registry anyway.
By the way, Da_G's rom is normally the cleanest rom.

Yeah I'll give it a shot in a week or two. You make it sound so easy. =) And I hope it will be *crosses fingers*

Well it'll give me an opportunity to test out a couple things. And of course I'll share my findings with this great community.
Thanks both of you for the push into trying my own.

@SeanFromSoCal: Efficiency in any situation is defined in large part by its boundaries. There are few similarities between WinXP/Vista and WinMo. With PC's there can be no 'most efficient' windows b/c everyone has different hardware, habits, and environments. With no absolute boundaries, all you can do is remove what the majority of people won't use to yield more resources for user installed/added apps. With these HTC devices we have much more specific boundaries with the hardware and the 'environment' is pretty much the same for everyone (most of us use our phone as a phone). These boundaries define efficiency for this situation entirely different from one in the PC world.
At some point, your OCD tendencies will have to compromise. At one end of the spectrum you could say (for instance) that a rom would be full of bloatware and user installed applications slowing your phone to a crawl. On the other end of the spectrum, you would have to have someone code an entire OS in assembly to work with your hardware and behave exactly how you want it to. I think that you'll find that the difference between what is available and what you are looking for in comparison to the entire spectrum is probably not worth the effort.

I have done much research and playing around with these kinds of things lately so I could answer some questions and/or give pointers as to what can/can't be done. Feel free to pm me.

It's not that hard, especially the way you want to go at it. Just search through the thread for the packages that can be safely left out of the SYS folder (transcriber, skymall, voip, entertainment...), then leave that out. Find out what has to be cooked into the EXT's (dshow, concurrence, mhub and pretty much anything that you look at, scratch your head, and wonder what the hell it does). Then figure out how you're going to get your cabs in: either just cook them in and run them through config.txt, or use UC or a similar method off your sd card.
The hardest part is figuring out the 6.5 start menu. There are a billion shortcuts dumped into the root of it, many that you will hate. You have to figure out what to do with them, and also how to organize your start directory. Also, you need to figure out all the little odds and ends to remove from the kitchen, like the hundred or so .cpr's for different resolutions, and stupid crap like the wallpaper (spring, water, and some other crap) that is cooked in. It's not that bad. Just remember to archive things for when you screw up.

Thanks for your offer in the pointers and making your findings available to me. I'll definitely take you up on that. I'm just using the lightest WM6.5.1 ROM I can find for my current device and still think there is just a little more that can be squeezed out of it.
Besides trying to install most of the HTC/base apps outside the ROM into a program subfolder, I was thinking about removing the following to reduce the amount of files in the Windows folder:
87 CPR files that don't match my device's resolution. 1.18MB
70 HTML files. 255KB
79 Non-english KBD files. 192KB
19 Non-english LBD files. 3.78MB
136 Calculator image files. 404KB. I was going to replaced with SPB Calc that uses 2 image files.
28 P20-* Non-english PNG files. 1.11MB
327 Theme PNG files. 0.98MB
102 Shortcuts. 1.87KB
6 TSK files. 879KB
72 Start Icon. I was thinking of having these installed in the post customization and in its own folder. Which I am assume will work flawlessly since you can specify their location in the registry. Plus when you are trying to customize your Start Menu, IconChanger doesn't even let you select a PNG saved in the ROM.
Deleting 801 files (not including the Start Icons which will be just relocated) out of the 3638 total in Windows directory by creating a simple batch file would be quick and dirty. I know the file sizes look small but it comprises 22% of all the file in that directory and totals up to 12MB if you include file slack space. And I'm sure with fuller ROMs (this is the lightest/most stock on the Raphael) the savings is probably even higher.

@Farmer Ted,
Yeah I'll have to do some digging. I'm glad that most of you cooks have discussed these packages so I'll just have to search within this thread to find nearly everything. And I'm very happy to see that this thread has some very helpful people so that'll be of a major assistance. No negative vibe here in Da_G's thread unlike other places on this board.
And I totally agree with you about the stupid crap built in. My post just crossed yours and I too was irked by the CPRs that have been left in that don't match my resolution.
Thanks for the support guys. I really appreciate it.
