Any other example than advanced config to test the netcf enhacements please i dont have issues with mine.

Tested personaly: LumosRC2, CAnalog Clock, Windows Live Search, TaskFacade
Mentioned by other: cleanRAM

Sorry, I cannot confirm other example beside the above mentioned, since I already replace the GAC.

Yeah, Bing (the old Live search) didn't work either. That's the first app I had it with.

I had this problem several builds back, and discovered that my .net package had somehow gotten corrupted. Replacing the .net package solved my issue.

@Indragroove
I use the same package that worked for other build, in the same kitchen. Even with 23022 it still work, but not with 23024/25. Replacing the GAC_ worked.

@QuePPC
TaskFacade work for me also, don't know about bing (not using it)

That's your kitchen's fault. Something's missing or incorrect in your kitchen's files. Idk what it is though, sorry. Someone else should know which folder controls that...

Hi Da_G

I found in the boot.rgu that you provided with WM6.5 Native Kernel for Kovsky, you added this reg key at the bottom:
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\FATFS\Fil ters\CacheFilt]
seem you want to remove the CacheFilt.
Would you please give the explanation for this? Is it because of the NK WM6.5 related so we must remove the cachefilt?
How if we still using the CacheFilt?

Thanks in advance

hummm.... still too meny issue in 23025 :\
tired for fixing things.....
wait for better one :p
Hello,
I got bing error also with this 23025...
When I look at changes from release to release I see that microsoft fix some issue themself (ugly taskbar in startmenu now ok, top align of icons also, Ok button missing in alarm screen now ok, and so on...) so I prefer waiting for new release instead of spending too many hours fixing those issue myself ;)
I'm just new to cooking so I spend my time organizing folders, choosing packages, preparing custom config (autolock, small tweaks, some default frenchy settings, other...). This way when a release will be more stable/complete I'll be happy to share my ROM :p

Ps: from what I've seen they removed (or forgot?) some component in the 23025 (24 also maybe) like windowsmobile.status and pocketoutlook (maybe others not seen yet)
PsBis : I have wired thing in the alarm screen, I cannot use Ring sounds for alarms....really strange, am I alone ?

@rgb-rgb:

The relevant shortcut has been changed from alarms.lnk to mslarms.lnk, might that be the cause?

That might do it. Thanks Da_G. Will check it out in just a bit.

Yea, we need to figure out the volume issue on the touch pro! I will start searching and see what I find! :)

I'd love to figure this out because I find the VOLUME buttons useless. I personally keep my phone on Vibrate always. So why waste 2 perfectly good buttons? On my dell Axim x51v... I had my up/down volume buttons launch wireless manager and... and something else. But it was great.

I personally hate volume buttons and is the SOLE reason I use HTC Volume manager because the difference is the stock will CHANGE the volume on a single press vs the HTC Volume Manager will launch on a single press but not change anything until a second press. Using the stock volume controller, I'd find my phone either on VERY low volume or silent (both useless).

So with the buttons reassigned like they are being reported... I'd like that. I'm thinking that if we can find what is the cause, that maybe we can figure out a way to completely remap the volume keys like we have with the rest of the buttons.

I'm still using 23016 (and 23009 before that), but I never had that problem with settings, and I know others did with that build. I clean up and cook in the entire hklm/security/shell/startinfo reg key, though.

I'm not sure that will be enough since the Redirects are also in the default.hv in the metabase as well. Can anyone confirm that the RGU edit is all you need? I have edited both, just in case.

Or use the provxml aproach to delete those values. This way you don't have to do this procedure each time a new build comes along. Just put the code below in a txt file. Rename to .provxml and put it in your Kitchen.
Provxml files are processed AFTER the reg/rgu's so it will delete the values for sure....

I noticed this too. I moght try to look again today and add the missong components since some of my programs will not work as is :( I thought htey had updated poutlook and that was the reason they werent working. Sounds more logical that something was missing. I have been asking developers to please update their software because I thought they had called a certain version of PocketOutlook(now I feel silly :o )

It would be great to figure out what is gping on with Volume buttons. I am surprised that Da_G said he did not have same issue. Can you give us some more info that may help in troubleshooting our builds? Are you using HTC Volume Control? The modded keypad.dll? Any specific reg tweaks that may not have been in your older kitchens? TIA

Editing only the rgu in Shell works fine. I am goint to try out this provxml thing I quoted below, seems could save me some time manually deleting those values from rgu. Tried mortscrpit, but for some reason wouldnt work for me :(

Thanks a TON!! I'll give this a try and include in all builds just in case. Is this straight from your provxml? So a copy paste should suffice?

Does anyone know how to disable the taskbar helper when pressing time on taskbar? This may help in troubl;e shooting Volume button as my Volume button seems to open the helper every time. Would be a good reg key to include in first page if we can find it :)

You can put it in either, just as long as it ends up in the \windows folder during the build.

All my provxml are in the OEM caus ethe OEM packages are the last included Pkgs in the build process mmm i think there on medkidcol, lets try this provxml thanks man! ;) maybe i will include the magnifier too in the same provxml altho it doesnt work properly in Hermes... :o

Da_g I think this dpi info must be 96 not 92... info in post #4

Possible values for the %VARIABLES% above:

%DEVICENAME%: Name of your device (Hermes, Raphael, Diamond, etc.)

%LOCALE_ID%: The 4 digit number matching your locale (list of supported id's found in first post) - a full list can be found here. It is possible to port WM to a language that is not supported, you would have to use a PE Resource editing program to translate all the various strings found in the .mui (Multilingual User Interface) files. Note that these change periodically as the builds get updated so you would also need to update your altered .mui's.

%BUILDNUMBER%: The build version in use (23022 for example)

%DPI%: DPI of the device (92, 128, 192)

tarkim has created a tool that will do this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=521786

prb creates default.hv from your rgu files. the default.hv in your SYS source is overwritten.

Or use the provxml aproach to delete those values.
this would work, but is unnecessary. i prefer rgu wherever possible, having less provxml to parse speeds up first boot.

i would also consider removing stuff from the shell rgu to be bad practice. you dont want to have to redo that every time you port a SYS. if you create an EXT package that removes the keys, you're done, and don't have to worry about it in the future.

Aside from the fix dcd mentioned, pay close attention to your SLOT 0 VM layout. (i.e. keep it as close to empty as possible)

I have seen problems with various notifications firing triggered by a low amount of space in SLOT 0 before.

I'll try and get a WM 6.1 thread going today, not to get too off topic but it appears the last modification made to WM 6.1 21054 was on 7/15/2009, given that's just shy of a month ago, i'd say that firmly places 6.1 EOL (end of life) - although there may be a maintenance release or 2 for nasty bugs in the future :)

Hey Da_G, I know that keeping slot 0 free is a good thing, I can go and recmod damned near everything so that slot 0 is free on build (according to kitchen log), the only problem is that obviously some of that is going to be assigned dynamically on boot up. I'm wondering if there is an application that we can run that will show us slot 0 usage and what modules/files are assigned to the 64kb blocks.

I'm on 6.1 kernel, so that means I should be trying to squeeze everything into one 32mb slot (slot1) which is going to be damned near impossible. I'm sure there are quite a few system dll's that are rarely used, but using vm space anyhow due to the fact that almost everything is a module from MS on these releases. I want to see if I can get a better idea of what dll's are used more often and which one's aren't so I can fine tune my VM Slot assignment.

A.K.A., do we have any tools to profile our VM Slot usage/assignment once booted?

Wich files in 23025 do i need to replace (with 23017 ones) to get the popupscreens back to original size??

I like the new build but...... too large popups.. :-(

Does anyone know how to change the softkey-bar back to 52 pixels (70 pixel in >23022)????

first you should read post #2 of this thread. then read it again a few more times :) (thats what i did - best post on xda)
prb will show you slot allocations at the end of building.

yes you are right, best post i've ever read regarding Kernel on WM devices but again i don't know how to check for this....:p but something tells me that has to be when building a rom on my kitchen, there should be a map txt file that tells me everything or where files and modules are allocated in memory addresses, right? something more on the side of what joojoobee666 mentioned above.

If you get a build-log.txt file, it's in there. It also goes by really quickly on the command screen. You can pause the screen with the scroll bar and maybe write it down (good luck with that, I've tried). If you don't get a build log, this is what 2pumpchump said you can do:

you have to add this to your bat, where it calls platformrebuilder

TOOLS\platformrebuilder.exe> build-log.txt

I haven't figured that one out yet, lol. Maybe one of these days.

Visual Kitchen 1.8.1 automatically creates the log, just update to that version. Then you can see your slot assignments.

My question to Da_G was based on this. It's a piece of cake to get Slot 0 to nothing (minus the XIP of course) during build, but none of that will matter once dll's and exe's are dynamically assigned anyhow.

if you use visual kitchen, you can just update your version it has build_log.txt built in it. if you dont use visual kitchen, or if you want to fix your older visual kitchen so it will make a build_log.txt when you cook you can do this.

in visual kitchen, open tools folder and then kitchen_build_rom.bat with notepad. search for this line....

TOOLS\platformrebuilder.exe
if not "%errorlevel%"=="0" goto error

change it to this.....

TOOLS\platformrebuilder.exe> build-log.txt
if not "%errorlevel%"=="0" goto error

you can do this with visual kitchen or build_rom.bat in old style batch kitchen works the same :)

I thought Da_G had to use a customized version of the Visual Kitchen in his kitchen to get it to work properly.
Specifically the using of htcrt instead of nbhutil.

If the only difference is the kitchen_build_rom.bat, then we could edit that to get it working.

Keep recmodding. There is no 6.5 native nk.exe for the CDMA touch pros yet.

recmod all of adobeflash (both folders for good measure), all of browsingie, and MediaOS (Windows Media Player) if that's not enough. (I still recommend MediaOS if you don't use WMP a WHOLE lot.)

You can go into the options and change the max module count to a higher number, but I advise against doing so seeing as you only have a 6.1 kernel.

Hi,

If you use the ">" operator, the output will be redirected to the destination you've entered, eg "> a.txt" will output to a.txt and ">lpt1" will output to LPT1 port.

Anyway, if you want to see the output in the command prompt while outputing to a text file, you can use the mtee.exe found in the Tools folder. To send the output to the mtee.exe, you need to use the | operator, like this,
TOOLS\platformrebuilder.exe | tools\mtee build-log.txt

By doing so, the output is outputed into mtee.exe. mtee.exe is a little tool which display the output to the screen while writing to the text file mentioned. This way, we can still see what is happening while having to keep the log in a file. But of course, all the coloured text will be missing.

Attached is the modified kitchen_build_rom.bat (xda doesn't allow me to upload a .bat file. So I rename it to a .txt file. Just rename it back to .bat) to be placed in the Tools folder. I believe the mtee.exe is already in the Tools folder, so I'm not attaching it.

I use to use AutoRun but it is older and is slowly being replaced by RunCC. RunCC has much more future potential. I have been using RunCC for a long time with no problems untill the last 2 builds. Also some of the Rhodium and Topaz Packages require RunCC. I hope there is a fix. I think I'm in need os some newer packages or different RunCC settings.
Hi bobsbbq - I was wondering if you could help me understand what RunCC is, and how to use it. I don't want to clutter this thread, so I started a new one just for this question. Perhaps you (or anyone else that knows) could share your knowledge about this? Thanks!

Hey FT, all you have to do is right-click on the .bat file and choose "Edit" from the shortcut menu. That will open it in Notepad, without having to change anything (I was confused about this too, since I'm used to using "Open With...").

Any interest in a thread similar to this for the latest 6.1 release? (i.e. all languages, dpi, pizza parties, so forth)

Sounds good to me, you have my vote.

If the latest is 21054 - I was able to locate and use 21127 ages ago, extracted from an Atom I think (too long ago :))...also tried to extract 21128 from anOmnia I saw posted on xBeta, got the xip, but not the sys.

Is this possibly a hexed version of something else? It has some gui changes which began to appear in the early wm6.5 builds, like the ok up the top right and the start logo, so I assumed it was right.

Can I get a WM6.5 native nk.exe for the NIKI :) - only kidding :D:D

Thanks

I gotta disagree. This is the most stable of the 2302X series so far. The only minor bug is the dialer IMO, which is way better than the previous 2302X builds.

Just for posterity, here's my memory map (23016). I haven't converted any files to modules, so I was pretty surprised when I had a few 'out of memory' errors with MSVC. They occurred right after a soft reset, but I remembered that both times it was when I was restoring my pim stuff with sk tools backup. It does a soft reset, then boots up sk tools again. I also have Sip Changer running (to set FingerKeyboard up), and it runs right on start up. I guess the combo of those two programs booting up messes with MSVC when it's starting up. Not a big deal. I've got Slot 60 and 0 empty, so I should have plenty of VM (as far as I understand it). Thanks for all the help getting the build-log going (2pumpchump, Programatix and Capn_T-Back).

I thought htey had updated poutlook and that was the reason they werent working. Sounds more logical that something was missing. I have been asking developers to please update their software because I thought they had called a certain version of PocketOutlook(now I feel silly :o )

So what is the final word on PocketOutlook now?
(sorry have been offline for +24hrs and now playing catch-up)
I don't think it was "forgotten" as I can still see it there under BaseApps

EDIT: Nevermind, got it FIXED! :D
Just need to replace \BaseApps\GAC_XXX_v1_0_0_0_cneutral_1.dll files with those from 23022.
(you can just copy them into Windows dir on a running rom too)

PS: LMAO at all of the "Gimme Gimme native kernel" posts! Especially from those of us with wm5/6 native devices?? :p Who did they think was out there making oem wm6.5 roms to extract them from???

However, while on that subject ... I was also very curious about whether there are any tools to inspect the VM slot 0 usage in a running system as I have had to recmod a tonne of modules to get slot 0 free and I'd love to know what files just end up back in there dynamically anyway.

Actually ... are there any particular files under SYS that absolutely must be modules? Just curious :)

Thanks!

I'm thinking that if we can find what is the cause, that maybe we can figure out a way to completely remap the volume keys like we have with the rest of the buttons. found out how the volume on the fuze works now! If you press up once on the volume it will bring up the titlebar list hit the volume icon and it will go into the volume screen, your volume buttons will work then but you need to do this everytime you want to change volume! Kinda sucks but works til something better comes along! :)

I can't wait to get back home to start playing with this rom. I've gotten my 23016 rom so fine that it just works; for me it is perfect. I'm outta town till this Sunday but leave again in 3 days after I arrive... then its 5 home and 7 out of town again. My crazy side wants to flash this but my logical side says to wait.

AHHH. Lookin' good though guys. I'm hoping that by the time I get to my kitchen, the revisions will be a bit more solid. Keep posting bug problems and fixes as I'm trying to keep up on my EDGE connected Fuze (no 3G sucks!)

Memory Map...
SLOT 0: 0x02000000 - 0x01b70000 (END: 0x00060000, 0 MODULES)
0x02000000 - 0x01fc0000 - ROM 0
0x01f80000 - 0x01b70000 - ROM 1
SLOT 1: 0x04000000 - 0x02022000 (END: 0x02020000, 213 MODULES)
SLOT 60: 0x7a000000 - 0x7a000000 (END: 0x78020000, 0 MODULES)
SLOT 61: 0x7c000000 - 0x7a3f0000 (END: 0x7a020000, 246 MODULES)

RAM IMAGE: 0x80000000 - 0x803e21dc

RAM: 0x803e3000 - 0x80493000 - Used for kernel modules
0x80493000 - 0x83400000 - 47 MB free

How do we achieve such a check ? Whick are the tools to do so ?

Thanks!

It seems as though I may have messed my kitchen up a bit by going overboard on turning files to modules. I can no longer:
Install Themes
Install cabs
Install PROVXML with FdcSoft Tasmanager

Has anyone come across this problem before and what do I need to do to fix it? Should I just overwrite my current kitchen with the version I have in archive?

Whats the point of these frankenstein builds? The changes from 23016 to 23025 are mainly the GUI. Why not run 23016 if you want 23016? Whats the point of trying to turn 23025 into a 23016 with unknown side effects? You are going to cause yourself problems by trying to make half and half builds.

That's great, and is related to the problem. However, how do we see WHAT dll/exe is allocated where/how? I got my ROM down to 0 modules in slot 0 on BUILD, but would like to know what dll's are being allocated (be it dynamically or during build) I could then recmod some the lesser used dll's that are being allocated as modules so that they aren't wasting VM space, then reversemode some of the other modules again (like .NET) since they are used quite often.

(BTW, that does work, but appears to only profile Slot 1, which isn't the main concern here, right? Maybe the code is simple enough so that I we can rewrite it to dump Slot 0 instead)

reversemode.exe is not a perfect tool, sometimes there are issues (one reason i'm working on the underlying toolset)

Some info on what you see in VirtualMemory.exe:

Each "Bar" is a slot. You are seeing slots 1 through 32 (user space slots)

Slot 0 is essentially holding a copy of the current process, minus the space taken by XIP and IMGFS modules (xip defined in .VM and IMGFS defined in .ROM)

According to the app developer " Slot 0 is assigned to the currently running process, and thus is not graphed.", so still leaves out out in the cold, not to mention, this still doesn't seem to add up. It's like we are talking about 2 different Slot 0's here. Unless it is not, and the modules we are allocating to slot 0 are just there waiting to be accessed by whatever process is currently running on 0, in which case, it would still be nice to know. Can you clarify?

Da_G
13th August 2009, 08:22 PM
@joojoobee666: No, that info is correct. did you see my last post? I think you were typing that when I made it :)

Maybe I can explain it a little better?

Assuming you have a program, lets say beer.exe

beer.exe requires 2 components, hops.dll and barley.dll

one time, you cook a ROM with hops.dll and barley.dll stored as modules. let's assume for the moment they only have read only code (read/write code must execute in slot 0)

so, you cook the ROM, and they are pre-allocated to slot 60/61/1.

now when you run beer.exe and look at virtualmemory.exe's bar - there's a minimal amount of space used (only that required by beer.exe's code itself) - the read only code in hops.dll and barley.dll is still loaded, but pre-allocated to slot 60/61/1 so it doesn't require any VM space in the slot reserved for beer.exe upon execution.

so now, lets cook the ROM, this time barley.dll is a FILE rather than a module

now, looking at VirtualMemory.exe, the bar for beer.exe shows more space being eaten up (toward the top of the bar)

this space is the memory required by barley.dll - now instead of being pre-allocated to slot 60/61/1, it's loaded into the slot reserved for beer.exe.

This is something you want to avoid, because when it's copied to slot 0 (when it becomes the active process) you're cramming it even more, because there's space reserved there already.

That's what it means when you say that "all recmodded modules are dynamically assigned to slot 0 vs. being pre-allocated to slot 60/61/1"

Hope it makes some sense :)

@joojoobee666: No, that info is correct. did you see my last post? I think you were typing that when I made it :)

You are right, but I am still trying to get clarification. I understand that the most processes we are allowed to run is 32 and how those slots apply, just how does Slot 0 and allocation during the build process apply? Where are these modules that are getting allocated to Slot 0 during build getting allocated too? If it is to "Slot 0" does that mean those allocations are gone for ANY app that moves to slot 0 when running?

Edit: we crossed posted again, lol. But I think we are getting closer. Only, I only have Slot 0 and 1, so what happens when something is allocated to slot 0 during build? What I mentioned above?

Da_G

I updated the post, take a read :)

Slot 0 space is marked off as reserved,

.VM handles this for NK/XIP modules (the first dword contained in imageinfo.bin of .VM tells the VM allocator where it can start allocating modules)

Example: you use 512KB of space in XIP modules

Slot 0 is 0x00000000 to 0x01FFFFFF

Allocation is top-down, the allocator reads the .VM upon boot,

imageinfo.bin first dword is something like 0x01F80000 (note 2 things here. the value is stored little-endian in the imageinfo.bin - so it appears in a hex editor as 00 00 F8 01. also, it is aligned to a 64KB boundary [modules are allocated to a 4KB boundary in NK/XIP, the allocator marks off the space in 64KB boundaries though])

so that tells the allocator - "space between 0x01FFFFFF and 0x01F80000 is taken by modules in NK/XIP, don't use it for dynamic allocation"

The 2nd dword in the file is the same thing, for slot 1.

.ROM contains similar values marking off the space for IMGFS modules.

Also, for the purposes of this discussion, it is useful to note that the imageinfo.txt for both .VM and .ROM is meaningless, it is trying to interpret the first data stream in .VM and .ROM as a ROM header, which it is not. So when working with these files you must ignore the imageinfo.txt alltogether, and only use the .bin :)

I updated the post, take a read :)

Ok, just to make sure I have it then. If it is allocated to Slot 0 during the build, that space is gone for EVERY app that runs from Slot 0 (which could be really bad if it is not allocated to Slot 1/60 or 61). So if I have 15MB of modules be allocated during build that only leaves 17MB for any one particular running application, since 15MB of slot 0 has been allocated to other things. If that is correct, let me know. So the last question is, how do we see a list of items that are allocated in Slot 1 AND Slot 0 dynamically and during build? I figure there has got to be quite a few dll's and such being allocated to Slot 1 that are RARELY used, and I would be better off recmodding those, then leaving some of the more heavily used items as modules (i.e. IE modules, since I run out of VM, even with Slot 0 free on build and Free Physical RAM, probably because the DLL's are just being dynamically assigned in to Slot 0 when run, hence losing that RAM). Sorry for all the questions, I just HAVE to know, lol.

@farahbolsey:

Looks like there might be a problem with the .mui there, you can look at the forms etc. defined in it with PE Explorer, maybe a simple resize will take care of it. (btw that's a bit of an advanced topic, hacking resources etc. just in case you dont want to get into that) :)

There's a good chance that would be fixed in a future update.

So, I finally upgraded to 1.8.1, and am wondering how many modules we can get away with in slot 0? My build log is looking like this:

Memory Map...
SLOT 0: 0x02000000 - 0x01320000 (END: 0x00060000, 65 MODULES)
0x02000000 - 0x01fc0000 - ROM 0
0x01f80000 - 0x01d50000 - ROM 1
SLOT 1: 0x04000000 - 0x02020000 (END: 0x02020000, 311 MODULES)
RAM IMAGE: 0x80000000 - 0x803b6edc
RAM: 0x803b7000 - 0x803ec000 - Used for kernel modules
0x803ec000 - 0x83400000 - 48 MB free

Is 65 modules in slot 0 too many? Will I simply run out of VM faster, or are there other potential issues that I should be concerned with?

The strange thing is that when I started the build process, the dialog said that I had 500 modules, but 65 and 311 obviously don't add up to 500. What am I missing here (aside from a 6.5 NK)?

@joojoobee: good idea, i'll see if i can 'dumb it down' a little and post it up on the first page with the rest of the virtual memory stuffs. i'll leave that on a todo for tomorrow :)

@indagroove: really what's important is this:

0x01320000 (END: 0x00060000

You've got space between 0x60000 and 0x1320000 free, a bit of hex math and we end up with 18MB available in SLOT 0.

That's pretty darn cramped, I don't see that working too well, although I have seen OEM ROM's as cramped as 12MB :)

After looking at all the logs from everyone's PRB output, it does appear there may be an issue with PRB's relocation algorithm, as there appears to be too much free space in most cases.. it shows SLOT 0 ROM 1 ending at 0x01D50000, and the allocator starting at 0x01320000, that's exactly 10MB of VM in SLOT 0 that appears to be wasted, unless my math is off or i'm not accounting for something else reserved there. Anyone check my math? There is plenty of potential for wasted space due to the alignment on page boundarys, but it shouldnt be THAT much.

Re: the number of modules listed, erv vk might be also counting XIP modules (normally around 32) - but that only bumps you up to 400ish. .VM and .ROM might also be counted as modules (although they are not) - maybe the algo used to calc modules is mistakenly counting every subfolder in the \SYS too, that might bump it up to 500, it does seem to be off though.

But again the number of modules really isn't an issue, it's the size eaten by them :)

Just to chime in on as far as some of the items I have found and recmodded. I've gotten my Slot 0 down to 0 on 23016 (don't know how much is getting wasted dynamically after boot yet). I've been going through dll's and recmodding them then checking them out with a resource hacker program. I've found a few that can definitely be recmodded, like the dll's starting with peg*.dll in the Shell folder. One of them has ONLY all the card images for Solitaire, as well as app exe's like fexplore, taskmgr, notes, sndplyr, etc, etc. I'm sure they don't need to wasting VM space ALL the time. Also, you can find some resource realted dll's in the 0409. Happy module hunting :D

per post #2, you actually want to leave resource-only dll's as modules so they can take advantage of slot 63. that was my understanding - someone please correct me if im wrong.

Funny you should say that, I was just getting ready to ask (just reread again and noticed that), how can we know if it will be allocated to Slot 63? (i.e. what identifies it as resource only, and how can I easily tell). Clearly some of those appeared as resource only to me, but still freed up the space so it was being identified as code based.

One more thing, if I understand the allocation, this is done in 64KB chunks, so a 3KB exe or dll module will still use 64KB of VM space, is that correct?

Da_G
13th August 2009, 10:52 PM
A resource only module has no code in it :)

Using PE Explorer as an example:

Every module in \Base_DPI_192 for example, is a resource-only module. Easiest way to tell is to recmod it and open up in PE Explorer - There's a tab for "Section Headers"

If it only has a .rsrc (Resource section) - It's a resource-only module.

If it has .pdata or a .data section, it's got some code in it, and is not a resource-only module.

Also note some more info re: VM here. (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms925493.aspx)

There are some intricacies described there like filling "memory holes" with "filler" - module sections that are small enough to fit into the space left over from the modules being aligned to page boundries (free space before end of page)

I don't know if the reloc algorithms used in our tools are aware of this at all. So there's some potential wasted space to be gained there as well. Also discussed there is "uncompressed sections" - this is desirable for several reasons, one of which being if you run a NOR device, and want to XIP directly off the IMGFS, that section MUST be compressed (decompressing it means it must be copied to memory, and so cannot XIP)

Our current tools do not support flagging a section, module, or the entire filesystem to be uncompressed in any way. There's another reason i'm working on them slowly :)

A resource only module has no code in it :)

Using PE Explorer as an example:

Every module in \Base_DPI_192 for example, is a resource-only module. Easiest way to tell is to recmod it and open up in PE Explorer - There's a tab for "Section Headers"
which describes each section (s00x) in the file -

If it only has a .rsrc (Resource section) - It's a resource-only module.

If it has .pdata or a .data section, it's got some code in it, and is not a resource-only module.

:)

Perfect, thank you. I've been using Resource Tuner. Just installed the trial of PE Explorer and I can see exactly what you are talking about. Now, to check some stuff out in the sys :D

What about .text? I assume resource, is this correct?

Not according to the MSDN page Da_G linked to. It says that it means code.

ROM section Description
.text Code
.rsrc Resource data
.data Data
.pdata Debugging and exception processing information for each function in the code section
.CRT Special section — C++ construct
.KDATA Special section — present in the kernel (Nk.exe) only

I'll fix it when I migrate the info to the first post, I swear! :)

Thanks, I'm grateful for all of the info. With the new knowledge gained today, I found that my tsowen task bar icons had 3.5mb of dll's that were resources only, but were not modules. I made them modules (along with a few others I found and recooked)and I'm still at 0 modules for Slot 0 and also have amuch deeper understanding of the CE memory architecture.

Just to get one more thing straight, in this case what would happen if a resource DLL was NOT a module but is used 100% of the time? (like shellres.192.dll, I assume it's always loaded since the resources are constantly used) Is it treated like any other none moduled DLL when loaded? Or because it's a system DLL (in this case part of shell32 I assume), is it loaded in the slot (in my case, shell32.exe is in slot 7) that the particular system process runs under and not interfering with Slot 0, just physical RAM?

Also, if it is just a resource DLL for a user process (i.e. a resource dll for say Windows Live), will it eat up some of Slot 0 when run since it was NOT a module, or does the CE kernel know, treat it differently anyhow?

as far as i know since an old era, g'reloc wouldn't work for resource modules, mui modules, and executable modules. but i don't know about cpl modules if it's realoc during cooking progres.
so if you care for slot 0 just recmod for modules like htmlview.dll etc (sorry i don't know what we called this type lol)
please correct me if i'm wrong...

Note that this build is timebombed! You must remove the timebomb from shell32, following the SOP.

For your convenience, i've attached a patched shell32.exe :)

A few more things are renamed from Pocket PC to Windows Phone, among other changes in this build. The "Enlarge Titlebar" function looks a heck of alot nicer in this build :)

Ooh, fancy compositing effects! :)

@ Abusalza:

If I recall correctly, the VM handler automatically remaps modules assigned to slot 0 that are resource only to slot 63 "on the fly" - the only specific allocations required are slot 60/61/1/0

No, you just need to copy all of the BaseApps\GAC_****_v1_0_0_0_cneutral_1.dll files from 23022 (under SYS-SHARED-COMMON) and use them to replace those that are in 23025.

They are corrupt or something (and have been since 23024) ... not sure if 23028 ones are fixed.

You can also copy these files into the Windows dir on your running rom but use TotalCommander and do a soft reset straight after.

I'm at the end of my rope figuring out what else to recmod without slowing it down... I've done everything I've seen suggested in here but I still need to free up some slot 0 space because I still get memory errors in some games. My memory for slot 0 is as follows:

SLOT 0: 0x02000000 - 0x01670000 (END: 0x00060000, 52 MODULES)
0x02000000 - 0x01fe0000 - ROM 0
0x01fa0000 - 0x01d20000 - ROM 1

So, around 22MB free.
Any more ideas?

Replacing the GAC_Microsoft.WindowsMobile_v1_0_0_0_cneutral_1.dl l under BaseApps from an older build (i.e. 23016 or 23017), and if that doesn't fix it, replace ALL the GAC_*.* files in that folder from an older build.

Here, this is all the files. Replacing just the one I mentioned wasn't enough (just tried) but replacing all of them works.

It's because of changing X/OK button location. It'll fix on Task Manager next releases. ("They said we are waiting for a stable build, so we'll update our program." , Da_G said)

I believe that is the case - if you compare all rgu between 23016 and 23022, none of the registry differences are causing the change. it has to be a binary change somewhere.

also, if you use a key remap app like raphkbdconfig (or AEBplus i would assume) , you can map anything you want to "volume up" or "volume down" functions and it will bring up the titlebarlist.
