All,

The project "Wing Linux" is hosted at sourceforge.net, the aim of the project is to
port Linux and Android on OMAP 850 devices.

Lots and lots of thanks to Cory Maccarrone <darkstar6262@gmail.com> for porting android onto OMAP850

For more information on this visit
http://sourceforge.net/apps/trac/wing-linux/wiki

To download source code
git://wing-linux.git.sourceforge.net/gitroot/wing-linux (git://wing-linux.git.sourceforge.net/gitroot/wing-linux)

To install on artemis

downloadwing-linux-0.4pre3.zip from the download link http://sourceforge.net/projects/wing-linux/files/Wing%20Linux%20Development/0.4pre3/wing-linux-0.4pre3.zip/download on the sourceforge.net,

From the zip file install the following files in the given order
1) wing-linux-0.4pre3-rootfs.cab

2) wing-linux-0.4pre3-herald.cab
or
wing-linux-0.4pre3-prophet.cab

then browse to programs and run Wing-linux.exe
wait for 15 mins for the first time.

Pls test.

I tried te rootfs and the herald cab works fine for me I my orbit.
The GSM works I receive a phone call and a SMS too and both works.
Need more work for let use the buttons: the right softkey and windows button type "6" and "N" and "M" respectively, and We need a back button urgently
If i use the wizard or prophet cab I use android in portrait because all is in landscape.

Well I just make the steps posted in first post and wait.
Now I can run android but the buttons are not mapped yet, but xplayerku is working on that and maybe Darkstar can have a board support for artemis soon.

Hi Guys,

This rom cannot be updated on shady 313 WM6.5 Rom. if you want to update android you should change your operation soft ware to any other one.

its not a rom
it's still experimental
it isnt finished yet
getting it run on half working hybrid 6.5 rom will be quite far down the priority list

just for the developers information, it runs fine on pdhee's last 6.5 rom...or rather it did until i tried it this morning and it crashed out with the kernel error that others are reporting (cant mount fs).

reading the dev lists it looks like some poeple think this is an sd driver issue or something that was introduced in the new version

waiting for a fix anyway

cuzzo94 the page that you found is the page for this project:)
the reason for that you dont close applications its because until now we dont have mapped the hardware buttons.
xplayerku is working on that and maybe darkstar too (i hope so).
BabelOued work in a similar project few years ago.
Hi,

Did you see that i do all job your are doing again ? one year ago, check kernel here with all driver working for artemis, missing wifi / battery / sound now.

http://git.linuxtogo.org/?p=groups/mobile-linux/kernel.git;a=shortlog;h=refs/heads/htc-omap
like he said he has working some drivers.
Maybe some programmer could mix the 2 projects.

if you read the thread, they are discussing making a specific artemis board config.

i think this needs to be done before we get any more progress

once the board config is done for artemis it can be fixed to run properly, but we need to wait for them to do this.

at the moment there are board configs for wing, prophet, herald and wizard, but no artemis so our phones are being booted pretending to be one of these 4 devices (which is why it doesnt quite work properly yet)

Only the first boot..... Remove the battery and retry......

d-signet
19th August 2009, 01:04 AM
mine seems to do that sometimes....i THINK it's entering standby becuase it takes so long to boot and doesnt get any input for all that time. I find if i casually tap the screen while booting i dont get that problem....might be wrong but thats my experience.

BTW, you dont need to remove the battery, just reset the device (sylus in reset hole)

tried both recommended but prefer prophet because of portrait mode...

i don't know if there were any updates..i downloaded my files several days ago...

as for those hw buttons...the only one working is the right softkey (typing -if i'm not wrong- m and 6)

herald seems to work a little different....probably becuase of key mappings
most buttons do SOMETHING, just not what you want. The red & green call buttons work as expected and moving the trackball seems to switch between landscape and portrait, but not all the time. Soft key gives M again as with prophet

Hi. I have compiled the kernel after modifying the key mappings as specified by fkirsammer in it's post (https://sourceforge.net/apps/phpbb/wing-linux/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=8&p=176#p115) on Wing Linux forums and finally I could experiment Android on Artemis (with back and menu keys available). :)

(First boot ended with a kernel panic but second one has successfully booted Android)

hi guy,

Really excited to see that Android has made its way to Artemis :), I wanted to give it a go and I needed a bit of info regarding the following:

1. Since there is an issue on the boot time, can somebody specify how long does it takes for the 1st boot?

2. Are the functions all running the way it should be?
3. And if I need to go back to WM6.5 from Android, is that possible?, or once you come to Android then there is some goofy way to get back to Windows Mobile.

Please advice!!

Thanks!

So basically it just overwrites the WM6.5 temporarily, once you rest it goes back to the WM6.5 version you were using?

Yes! WM6.5 is overwritten in memory by Android through Haret. Nothing in your smartphone is changed because all system is on your SD Card in a directory called linux.

just the usual way you uninstall programs, and then delete the LINUX folder from your sd card

you cant remove the files and still use it.

I think they change the path: git://wing-linux.git.sourceforge.net/gitroot/wing-linux/wing-linux

I use the cnossa zimage file and work for me:
I rename the original zimage to _zimage_ just in case, then delete rootfs.img and run haret.

The only difference is dont appear the calibration screen like with original zimage and that cause a little problems with screenkeyboard.
The volume slider works ok, the left softkey is Back button, the right softkey is Menu button, when I make a call the other person can hear my voice but I dont hear the other person, and anybody knows how rotate the screen?.

You also can remove linux directory from the sd card, reinstall Wing-Linux0.4pre3 and swap the zImage file before running Haret. This way the touchscreen calibration program runs (notice that first boot generally hangs or fail).

To rotate the screen I simply roll track ball after booting.

I don't know how I did it but I just wiped my SD Card:(.

I imagine it was either when it froze during install so I pushed the reset button or when I uninstalled it afterward to try again.

I would advise people back up anything on it they want to keep just in case it happens to you too!

The phone firmware is fine, although now my sd card is wiped I might flash the firmware to 6.5 anyway!

just download the zlimage from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4371278&postcount=32

delete the old 250mb image from linux folder (if you ever booted the android and it still is there)
install the %rootfs.cab and %herald.cab
go to linux folder on your storage card replace the zlimage with the new downloaded one and run haret...enjoy

Installed herald cab. and works. Using cnossa's zImage.

Home, menu and back buttons work. Its a little slow though. Can't call others, can't receive any calls either. No sms also. Let me know how you got this to work please.

Call log doesn't open. Can't create contacts either.
android.process.acore has stopped is the error I'm getting for both.

Can't connect to internet, no wi-fi, no Bluetooth. Battery shows charging and always at 100%, though I'm not charging it.

On another note,, there are very few applications. No android market either.

If you want me to test something else please ask. I might have to ask for instructions though. :P

no no no..... you CAN call and receive calls...sms works great...call log can open and you can create a contact...i tested it all myself....
wifi,bt and sound still don't work....

i suggest you to delete the 250mb image and run haret to create a new one....but be sure you placed cnossa's zlimage instead of the old one

I can send and recieve calls on mine, can't here them but they can here me. Also i can send and recieve text messages fine.

For me the key things that need addressing are being able to hear them and also having sounds working and performance as it is almost painfully slow at times.

just download the zlimage from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4371278&postcount=32

delete the old 250mb image from linux folder (if you ever booted the android and it still is there)
install the %rootfs.cab and %herald.cab
go to linux folder on your storage card replace the zlimage with the new downloaded one and run haret...enjoy

That's right ;)

I don't know how I did it but I just wiped my SD Card:(.

I imagine it was either when it froze during install so I pushed the reset button or when I uninstalled it afterward to try again.

I would advise people back up anything on it they want to keep just in case it happens to you too!

The phone firmware is fine, although now my sd card is wiped I might flash the firmware to 6.5 anyway!

I'm very interested in this project and installed the newest 0.4 to my Artemis. I ran it with Herald and original ZImage. I'm a programmer myself, so that makes me even more interested :)

Although I have a few questions:

- My Android seems to boot up fine, but it doesn't recognize my SIM-card
- I can't seem to find a back button, so when I enter a program or properties I cant get back to main screen / close the program.
- Is this supposed to feel kinda sluggish compared to Windows Mobile at this point ?

Thanks in advance

edit. Should I have used the cnossa ZImage for the buttons in Artemis ???

It seems quite an improvement on pre4. The suspend output is a bit unpleasant, and I haven't got a clue what gestures I'm supposed to use. I didn't realise it supported gestures for about 20 minutes! Is there a user guide somewhere? I see a lot of info for devs and marketeers, but nothing for a user...

Touch calibration was way out - is there some way to adjust it?
It seems like it tried to get an IP address from my DHCP server, but didn't seem to finish the job:

I have tried it on t-mobile mda compact III (artemis) and it does boot :)
Also the new zImage sorts out the key mappings.

There are problems with recognising SIM card & network - I have to set network to automatic search in which point it hangs but eventually finds network - although the network searching will hang in the loop in bg.

All in all its a nice exercise - I can also help if needed :)

Got the same problem...

I think the Artemis config. How can be changed the annoyng Flickering screen?
the old Qtopia works perfectly...

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The latest release is 0.4.2. but wit the same flickering...
:(

on the wing-linux webpage we are told that
#
Milestone: Release 0.5 is 10% ready,

there is only one Closed tickets solved, and this release will primarily focus on upgraded system components.

* Linux Kernel 2.6.32 or later (aligned to upstream)
* Audio/wifi support
* Power Management
* Full support for the HTC Artemis

but guys, on Artemis is flickering ! And makes it unusable.... no matter what kernel.

Hi,

I've installed Android on my Artemis and it seems to be working OK, except that I can't hear the other party when I'm making calls - this problem's also been reported on this thread by ryomahino, ezziin and a_lai82, and it's also been reported on other Android threads; I couldn't see any fixes, although it's obviously working for some people. I've also searched the SourceForge forum and can't see any references to my problem. Does anyone have a resolution for this? Or am I doing something stupid, like not turning the volume up (which is very possible).

I also have a problem that the Internet connection doesn't work.

Apart from that, everything seems to work OK - it's a bit slow, but I can live with that.

how to insert heraldlcd=screen:1 (flickering sol) and omap850_audio.ko (sound driver) into wing-linux-0.4.2 ?

jamescarter37
13th January 2010, 11:52 PM
taken from the 1st post @ http://sourceforge.net/apps/phpbb/wi...c.php?f=4&t=45

1. ssh to the phone
2. insmod omap850_audio.ko
3. mknod /dev/audio c 199 0
4. cat audiofile.wav > /dev/aud

i tried to test this myself, but i seem to have trouble connect my pc to my artemis via usb... from both Windows (adb does not list device), and Linux (it trys to make a network connection, but the dhcp times out)

However, assuming the driver works.
am guessing we would need to modify a the android/linux startup script to automatically load the driver module with via a command e.g. "modprobe omap850_audio"

The same happened to me (running in Artemis) but after I charged the battery 'till it was full, that didn't happen again until I was low on battery. Maybe that is the reason why. :)

Look here for the usb driver (it only worked on 32bit windows for me):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=554479
in the "How to copy files / install apps into Android using Windows" section

If you are running linux on your pc, you need to configure the ip on the interface usb0(for me) manually:
e.g.: "sudo ifconfig usb0 10.100.0.2 netmask 255.255.0.0 up"

then you should be able to telnet/ssh to your phone, your phone's ip should be 10.100.0.1

It's still very slow, been lurking around for info on omap850 on android.

Basically, the wifi , bluetooth, gps, sound* are still not working

On the kernel side, not much updates for omap850 as it's already running well.
Just on the driver side which is slow moving.

Guys,

maybe some Linux programmers are reading this post and know Artemis hw architecture better than me. Looking at the schematics of OMAP 850 processor I seen that there is the possibility to connect a secondary LCD display trough the uWire controller/interface. Is it possible to map this and use it to connect a secondary display via mini-USB? Artemis do not have any possibility to have a video out and this occasion can be a skyrocket for their owners.

What do you think about? Am I wrong?

Maybe the focus should be at getting ANY android version working correctly on haret, then MAYBE get to newer versions.

I haven't ever toyed with building Android before, but I might have a look at it on the Artemis...

I need help setting up my stuff though. Anyone interested?

EDIT: for the people getting a white screen while running HaRet, I had the same issue. My device wouldn't boot into windows anymore, so I did a Hard-reset. That worked.

Ok, small update: i'm running wings android on the artemis. Some things work, most things are broken.

Here's what I've found out so far:

Screen alignment is WAY off. Maybe I can recalibrate it a bit.
Device reacts very slow on first try. Maybe it improves after a few reboots.
It seems that partitioning your SD card to 2 partitions (1x 250mb or bigger to EXT3, the rest fat32) to significantly increase performance in android. Going to try that next.
Device sleep doesn't work. Screen stays on all the time.
Battery doesn't charge when on USB.
The only button that works is the one above the Windows button, which is used for the "back" function. Also, the volume slider seems to work.
Screen rotation starts out in landscape, somehow I turned it to portrait, through the END key. I don't know how, yet. :p

The rest is pretty much broken or not functional.

Just a reminder: this zImage is VERY experimental. So everyday use is FAR from happening. Seeing Android 1.6 running on this device like it does, it probably needs to have proper drivers built in. So hardware accelerated graphics can run.

As soon as that works, the focus should be on the sound.

Hi All,

Its really sad and disappointing that we do not have a ANDROID ROM for P3300, MDA Compact III.

I'd love an Android ROM for this phone too. It's currently sitting with Win Mobile 6.0 in Dutch and I'd like something (almost anything) in English again.

Any suggestions as to what the best ROM for this phone is until I can get Android on it? As long as it's in English, I'm not too fussed... :-)
