is this just a wrong setting in the register maybe, or could my usb port be broken?

1: Port is clogged with dirt.
This sometimes happens if u usee the phone continually in a dusty environment. Clean the phone and use again

2: Is Activesync Installed?
Check if activesync is installed in XP. It contains the drivers for your phone.

3: try plugging the USB to another port of your computer. This happened to me in my previous computer. One of the ports was damaged, but the phone was detected successfully in another port
