USB device unrecognized..?!

Hello!I have a friend`s elf to chamge the ROM but i can`t sync to make a backup of the contacts via device center but when i connect the device it shows me usb device unrecognize and i try to check and uncheck the advanced sync from the device but still unable to sync please help me is there a way to make a backup of the contacts and sms if the device doesn`t sync?
