Moved from the Bounty thread:
By Juanmre:
Hi Vilord,
This is my result from yesterday's test to make a call formating my SD card.
I'm using 3Lit3 VIII full, with Radio 1.65.30.09
I made a hard reset, and full format of my 8GB SDhc card as FAT32.
booted again on windows to let connection wizard to define my connections again.
Soft reset and insert card again with the files from ION and the following default.txt
#Polaris
set RAMSIZE 0x08000000
set MTYPE 1723
set KERNEL zImage
set initrd initrd.gz
set cmdline "ppp.apn=internet.itelcel.com ppp.username=webgprs ppp.password=webgprs2002 mddi.width=320 mddi.height=480 pm.sleep_mode=0 board-htcpolaris.panel_type=0 mddi_client_vogue.vsync=0"
boot
After boot windows again I opened IE and google searched for anything just to setup data connection.
Moved to file explorer and ran Haret.
Now in android, skipped the Google account setup because data connection was not ready.
Went to settings and wireless connection to define my apn settings. (filled with Name, APN, user, password, MCC and MNC everything else left blank)
Tried to navigate on browser but nothing happened, tryed to make a call but did not work, red screen again as call hung up.
Turned off device and booted in windows again. Made 2 calls and started data connection with IE, then ran Haret again.
Again in Android, still could not make any call and now the attach logo of 3g appeared but all in gray (showing no connection available) when tried to web browse same error connection.
Tried to call without success again.
It is may be useful to highlight that My polaris is Quad band GSM and UMTS 850, 1900 and 2.1. GSM network is at 1900 and UMTS network is at 850 in Mexico, Telcel (334 020) network. I don't know if something additional should be considered.
By the way, I do see the attach to a UMTS network (gray signal bars, and some of them in white) and I'm able to send and receive SMS. this time I did not disabled Manilla before running HAret.
I hope this could provide some hint.

POST MOVED FROM DEVELOPMENT THREAD:
Hi,
would
Code:
ppp.apn=internet ppp.username=web ppp.password=web
be the correct setting for Vodafone UK ..?
I can see the little Sat Dish flashing on teh Top when using Google maps but nothing happens....
In Wim6.1 I have google Latitude running before I start
EDIT: When booting Android I can see in the shell:
Quote:
can't access tty, Job control turned off

At first I face the same problem as well, I can see the satellite dish seems trying to get a fix but nothing happened. And Google map just hang a couple of times. However, I tried to restart and gps works after that. Did you tried to locate your current location?
Now I place a shortcut of haret in startup folder in winmo, and rename default.txt to startup.txt,so that when I soft reset it will load Android directly. I can just eject the sd card if I wish to load winmo.;)

Currently Android does not have WiFi or Bluetooth working yet, so in order to use internet connection you need to use the broadband connection from mobile carrier i.e. Digi.
in android, go to settings -> wireless controls -> mobile networks -> access point names
i'm using maxis so below is my apn settings:
apn: unet
username: maxis
password: wap

may be you can try to install hard spl 2.2 for polaris (touch cruise) by using micro sd card.
this is my suggested steps:
1. rename RUU_Signed.nbh to polaimg.nbh and copy to the root of your sd card.
2. press and hold camera button and soft reset your polaris.
3. you should see a tri color screen, now release your camera button.
4. the hard spl should be able to find the polaimg.nbh file in your sd card.
5. follow the instructions to complete the procedure.
this is just my suggestion, try at your own risk.
by the way, are you posting in the wrong thread?

I noticed some people have problems with outgoing calls on POLA100.
Just want to say I have one and no problem with outgoing or incoming calls

I have time issue.
When started Android after winmo it showed 2 hours ahead. it is set to GMT+2 manually. this is right now at summer time for my time zone.
So, I guess, as I read somewhere here, android took phone clock as GMT and added two hours.
Then I set real time. and back in windows it showed 2 hours less.
So what is the solution? to set GMT+0 time zone in android? or is there some other solution?

This is off topic post.
It is my 100th so I want to see if I become senior member.
And one question. Is there a way to record phone conversation in Android?
And, If there is, can both sides be heard well?

Hi all,
After reading some posts from Briggs and doing some tests on my own, I noticed that the failure on outgoing calls could be related with the type of your SIM card, if it is SIM or U-SIM.
In my case, I'm using U-SIM (recently provided by my operator because my handset is 3G capable).
I made several tests with different radio versions and zimage versions but always the same result.
Then I read Briggs' post and replaced my SIM card with the one from my work phone... this is an old simcard for a pure GSM phone. And now Android worked perfectly calls worked for incoming and outgoing...
When I put back again my U-SIM, same problem, incoming calls fine but no outgoing calls.
Could you make the test and post your results? or at least, post what type of simcard do you have?
I believe if the simcard is labeled 128k it should be a U-SIM, but I have no other way to identify them.
Thanks,
JM

this is what I did to overcome this issue:
in winmo, at the clock setting page, I set home timezone to +8, and visiting timezone to -1. whenever I want to boot in android I'll change to visiting timezone 1st.

U0.2
Actually those numbers are kind of the serial number of the chipset itself.
If the simcard has printed 128k almost as part of its "label" it would be a very good way to recognize that it is a U-SIM.
Other options may be almost guessing:
- If is a 3g/UMTS/HSPA operator and the Simcard was recently provided
- If the simcard was changed when the contract was signed again with a 3G capable phone...
Maybe you could try with a simcard as old as possible and see if outgoing calls work.
It seems that USIM support stronger encryption algorithms than GSM SIM card, so may be the problem with the outgoing calls is related to this encription request when requesting traffic channel for the outgoing call... but this is just a guess.
I hope developers could take a look at this issue and more people could tell their experiences if they have this outgoing call issue and can switch to an older simcard (SIM instead of USIM).

JM

i'm referring to time issue raised by kulen.
for my case, wheen i start with a fresh Android, the timezone is set to GMT 0, and say if in winmo the time is 1pm, and if in android i change the timezone to malaysia time GMT+8, the time will automatically changed to 9pm. if i go back to winmo, it become 9pm instead of 1pm...so i have to manually set the time to 1pm again.......
so what i do is, in winmo, home timezone i set to GMT+8 which is Malaysian timezone, then for visiting timezone i set it to GMT-1 Azores. So when i want to load Android, i just activate visiting timezone and load Android. then the time will be show as 1pm correctly in Android :)
not sure if anyone of you facing the same problem?

Thanks for the clarification... yes, I'm facing the same problem.
Good suggestion!!!
Other "problem" that I'm facing is with data connection. After the first time of running haret to start android, I define my APN settings, but it never got the data connection to work, until I opened the Modem application and start to connect.
After that everything worked fine. The problem is that I have to do the same procedure every time after running haret, even if APN was already defined.
And if I forget to run modem first and open an application requiring a data connection it will never work, modem will never connect and I have to power off, and start windows and haret again...
Have any of you faced this problem? is it "normal"?

JM

Thanks for the clarification... one more situation that I hesitate if it is "normal": When having an active data connection and a call comes in, call answered and hung up. Data connection cannot be re-established again... I'm having to shut down and restart again...
What do you think about this???

so far we just need to reconnect through modem again without having to restart android.. seems weird... maybe you can try to start with a fresh new release, which just have been relesed a couple of hours ago :)

Anyone tried to receive/make calls with zImage-27-07-09? I have no sound...
Files i am using:
Android bundle: android-1.5-2009-07-23.zip
Replaced system img with: system-nkhero-2009-07-24.img
current zimage: zImage-27-07-09
Update:
seems to be ok, deleted all files, extracted again android-1.5-2009-07-23.zip, replaced system.img with mssmisonsystem.img and applyed zImage-27-07-09. Call are OK.
Strange thing: if i am receiving a call i can end it with end button, but if i answered the call and then want to end it - nothing works: not hardware button, not software button on the screen.
Update: remaped button - seemed to be OK

Well, battery, battery, battery.
Android was working since yesterday, battery was showing about 1/3 left.
Received a call, tried to answer, but no sound.
Tried to reject the call, but no reaction.
Restarted the phone - and it turns of before phone radio and rom version is detected.
Reflashed radio, reset the phone - no result.
Reason for all this - battery was completely empty. Something is wrong with the battery indicator.

Try avoiding reflashing winmo with these issues, they are usually not connected and may put your device in necessary danger, as with all flashing. At the moment Android rums off the sd card and cannot harm your phones internal memory or alter the windows installation on it, so there should be no reason to reflash. I've had this a few times and its always been resolved with removing battery, replacing and placing on charge for 5 mins.

Hi,
You guys are doing an amazing job!!
Just wanted to let you now that the initrd/rootfs that comes with Zenulator's BackInBlack (Hero lite) build doesn't seem to give a working data connection with Kaiser/Polaris (at least not my POLA100).
Trying to boot BackInBlack with the latest "vogue-android" initrd/rootfs just gives a blank screen as others already have pointed out, but this is because the file "/init" on rootfs doesn't detect a Hero build and assumes an Ion build. The "init" script checks for the file "/system/app/HtcTwitter.apk" which is not part of the BackInBlack build. Changing this script line to check for a HTC application which is actually part of the BackInBlack build makes the script detect Hero build and boot successfully with working data on demand (at least for me it is).
@vilord: I saw you where talking to Zenulator to include his init-files in the "vogue-android" rootfs. I don't no if there are other differences than data connection, but using the current init.hero.rc seems to work better for Polars, and I would think Kaiser.

Anyone figure out where you put notifications, alarms and ringtones yet? Media folder doesn't work anymore, i read somewhere to put them in notifications but not all sounds are showing up in the list.
I also can't change the brightness, and lose my data connection (latest zen's hero build)
Just curious if anyone else has these issues and it's not just me, maybe I'm doing something wrong :P

It goes into a different folder for the hero builds. I was looking for it myself as I'd read it somewhere but now I cant find it.
Have a look at the android faq thread and see if you can find it. I'm pretending to be a rom cook today - sorry learning to be a rom cook I meant
(not that I'm having much luck with it)

Thank you for that...
So with the new initrd/rootfs what have people's experiences been? I hear there are SMS issues with some carriers (the same ones with outgoing calls issues)
I think I've only been playing with the rootfs while using a hero rom, and that latest hero rom from zen sure does work faster then i was ever expecting. whether or not that has to do with the rootfs, i don't know. the only other package i am using is pre rootfs so not much observing done, if any.
And, as posted, problems with data losing connection. whether that's just the new initrds that don't work right for me, or if its zen's package, i don't know, but my last stable initrd was july 31 i think.

I just can't seem to keep track of all changes and working combinations of files. I just updated my installation with the new zImage with working vSync. Working great! I then decided to upgrade the rest of the files too. So i downloaded the latest initrd and rootfs and mssmison's herolite. Copied the bunch and it kept on reloading in the bootscreen (with the annoying sound every minute). I thought that maybe i needed a fresh data.img so i backuped my old one, removed it and replaced with a downloaded data.gz. ... with the same result. What am i doing wrong? Do i need to adjust something in the default.txt, is this a not working combination of files for polaris?
Besides this issue i really think we would all benefit from a better, multi-device, file and version management system and some structure in the way everything is released. I consider myself a regular vistor (refreshing all pages at least twice an hour) and even i cannot keep up with what's going on where and how some changes are related or non-working combinations of changes. Must be a hell for someone not refreshing all day....
EDIT:
Returned to my nkhero system.img and my old data.img and everything is working fine. Problem must be with the herolite.

@Michel82: You have to set the resolution in default.txt to 320x480 and lcd.density=160 . The mssmisons' herolite isn't working for me but the Zunalators' build is working quite well.
Like Bally said in the developing thread maybe it's better to work with the Cupcake version. When we all use the cupcake version it's better to collect the problems and find a solution.
Do you have sms working Michel82 and do you have a working data connectiion with the latest rootfs/initrd?

SMS sending broken, instantly get a message saying message not sent. SMS receiving works. Sent a message from wifes phone and appeared in milliseconds!
Ok, nice that you have problems sending sms too :). I get exactly the same message when I try to send a sms. Receiving sms is working for me too!
The modem app is always starting pppd again and again. I see the 3g and then it dissapear and come again.
@Michel82: When you set the mnc and mcc you will have to set APN aswell right?

Yes, as far is understand since the last changes all APN settings inside android have to be correct. Where as in the previous versions you could have data through modem using the settings in default.txt. Without the settings inside android being completely correct.
Also this website might come in handy: http://android.v-dh.nl/internet.php EDIT: Forget about that site, looks like it was pulled.

hello! i started to follow the topic last week and finally yesterday i decided to boot android on my phone. since then i couldn't stop playing with it as i find it amazing. i was able to fix all issues listed in first post so now the system is close to full functionality.
however, i have a few questions:
- does the battery drain problem exists for everyone? a few people were complaining about it here but i couldn't find a proper answer. my battery died in about 5-6 hours yesterday. is that bad, good, or average?
- something is not clear to me: is there a fix to make wifi and camera working? i'm using the android-1.5-2009-08-04.zip package which i found at http://code.google.com/p/vogue-android/. i didn't change anything in the files which were included. everything else works well except these two.
- despite previous question draining battery could be the only thing that would stop me from using android daily. is there anyone in this topic who uses android as the main operation system on the polaris and can handle this problem? if yes, how?
- one more question from the hardware side in which i'm even more lame: doesn't running an operating system from the storage card kills the card faster? i assume that as it's constantly reading and writing it can get faulty much easier.
thanks for all the answers.

Battery drain : life02 is working on it with DZO, hope it will be correct with new kernel
Wifi&camera : wifi will be ok soon and camera already working for some devices
Each time we write something on the SD she dies a little more but for the moment there isn't full android rom so we must use our SD card.

thank you very much for the quick and kind reply. so it seems for the everyday use we have to wait a bit more but i'll use android as much as possible as it is fantastic.

Sorry but I just can't stop asking.
I saw in the development thread that there was a voting about which one is better: to have our own android rom or to boot it from the sd card and the previous won by miles. May I ask what's the reason of the lack of such roms? Is it because there are still quite a few things to do? Or is it simply harder to create a full implementation on our devices?

Decided to scratch everything and start afresh with the latest 2009-08-07.zip bundle.
Android boots fine and this is the fastest version I've tried to date. Got a wooping 23 fps in Neocore. But this is also far more unstable that previous versions.
Working:
OpenGL (23 fps in Neocore)
Calls
3G data
Market
Not working:
I've experienced two Android restarts so far (suddenly I'm back at the animated android loading image)
When receiving text messages or trying to send them the application Messaging (process com.android.mms") crashes.
Battery is never getting above 94% even after charging the whole night.
Syncing of mail and calendar works, but contacts don't.
Also a lot of other applications seems to crash a lot.
(Camera + WiFi ofcause)

is there any chance that i can get the music playing through my headphones? it always comes from the loudspeaker, no matter if i plug them in.
just to report: i downloaded latest 1.5 bundle called android-1.5-2009-08-08.zip which says that it can make wifi running on kaiser. i tried with polaris' default.txt but starting and receiving calls didn't work with that, so i tried the kaiser .txt and although wifi is not working, phone functions seem to work very well now.

ok, i made some research in the forums and wiki pages and it seems that audio routes are not perfectly ported yet. were there any builds in the past which were able to put the audio to the headphones when they got plugged in?

Unfortunatly I can't start ADB caused (I think) by a wrong USB cable. I thought I had the correct USB cable (delivered with the phone), but in WinMo I can connect to the pc, but in Android it detects nothing when I connect to the pc (Windows XP).
Do I have to buy another USB or do I something wrong?
In the past the phone was recognized by the pc and asked for drivers, but now it does nothing :(

Just downloaded and tried the latest Hero package (http://vogue-android.googlecode.com/files/zen-hero-090809.zip). But as always I'm unable too boot these. I'm stuck in an endless Android restart sequence.
First Linux boot's seemingly ok. Then the Andorid logo appears with a little sound, then the HTC logo comes with another sound. After a few seconds the screen goes black and the Android logo and sound is back. This just continues in a loop. I've deleted the data file without any luck.

The loop bug appear on HTC G1 too when we don't erase ext3 and Swap partition so maybe you need to retry with a fresh SD and new files

No, but I have tried deleting all Android specific files and folders (and done a checkdisk in Windows). I have severel GB with other stuff there I don't want to loose. So before I format I'd atleast have to copy everything somewhere else.

Maybe you can give a try to see if reformating of SD card helps. I have encounter this problem before when trying on some Hero build. but when i tried other version it is fine.
one more thing, i just notice that i have bad sectors in my 4GB micro SD card, not sure if it is because of Android?

If you think it will help the project... go for it.. but we already have a wiki page no-one is wanting to update apart from exco and the devs, so I doubt you're going to get too far with keeping it updated :)

During a couple of weeks (maybe months) I noticed that the call function isn't optimal yet. Very randomly I got no sound (like everything is muted) during calls and then I can't hangup the call (so a soft reset is needed).
Are there any of you having this problem too?
Leryan
14th August 2009, 10:34 AM
similar, problems with hanging up.
One thing I've noticed:
1. If I hang up a call first - everything is OK
2. If I hang up a call last - call ends only after some time out. No reaction to hardware key, and no reaction to onscreen button also.

just sending out some report:
yesterday morning i downloaded the new rootfs, system.img and initrd.gz (uploaded on 08/20) from the vogue-android page and i found that replacing these with the ones from the 08/08 ion bundle my polaris is as stable as it should always be. i didn't make any reboots in the last 30 hours, and data connection is still alive and usable in all aplications, also starting and receiving phone calls are working perfectly.
while i slept (for about 9 hours) i left the device turned on letting it constantly synchronize with my google account and also let the weatherbug widget refreshing itself every hour by 3G connection. when i last cheked the battery in the night, it was 52 percents, and in the morning it showed 41. i still don't know how exact is the battery indicator but if this 11 percentage drop is true then i think it's awesome.
i know wifi and bluetooth is higher priority but these are not important for me as i have a big amount of monthly data available and rarely use bluetooth. (and i can live without the camera, too.) what i mostly care about is what i already wrote in this forum: when i plug in my headset the output channel doesn't change, the sound still comes from the loudspeaker. i use my device as an mp3 player on a daily basis so it's very important for me. tunewiki is also available for the platform, which is the best audio player i've ever seen. if this issue could be solved, android on polaris would be near perfect for me.

looks like this thread is being neglected and marcelkordek has disappeared.
imfloflo, can you delete this thread please as it has no merit or value without moderation or updates. Unless you can change the OP to someone else, in which case change it to yourself then we'll get someone else to take charge of it.
If not, please delete it and we'll start a new thread with someone who wants to maintain it.
Thanks

I'm the only one who always have the problem of the full reload of the UI when I come back to home screen?
Even if I come back with home button or with back button, from setting or application, the UI reload entirely... It's very boring :(
It's the most annoying bug for me at the moment.

It's a Hero bug, don't use the home button but only back button to return to hte home.
back button should work ( this tips works on my G1 )

Yes, you already say that to me on the other thread ^^
But I have the problem even if I only use the back button... So maybe I'm the only one with this issue and it exists a solution, I hope :o
Mais merci d'essayer de m'aider ;)
(But thank you for trying to help me ;))
