Boot:
Copy all files to the root of your sd card, replace zimage (with the one from rogro82) and run haret (included).

What's working:
- Calander
- IM
- Market
- Google Mail
- Email
- SMS
- Audio
- Dialer
- Adding Contact
- Import Contact from Sim
- Calling the added Contact
- Internet
- Google Maps
- Phone calls (with full audio support)
- Turn screen on/off without problems
- Buttons are mapped right

Known issues:
- Telefone isn't disconnecting when pressing red button (you must press the on/off button)

Solution for screen flickering:
Use "board-htcvogue.panel_type=3" in default.txt

Internet isn't working:
Besure that you have a active data connection in Windows Mobile -> Boot Android -> lauch Togga and click on "Connect"

If you can't find "Togga":
You should just make a folder called "AndroidApps" in the root of the sd card and put this file in there:

http://retrobits.googlecode.com/files/Togga_103.apk

It installs when android starts. Now you should have "Togga" in your programs list.

Solution for "No Network" "Not Registered"
You must disable sim pin in winmo, than run haret.

Good job! Finally a thread where everyone can put there issues with Android without spamming the development thread.

You could add some known issues and answers to the startpost if you want (see below).

Known issues:
- Audio isn't working
- Starting camera results in a crash
- Screen displacement while turning screen on (temporary solution: click power button until screen is aligned right)
- Mapping buttons not optimal

Solution for screen flickering: use "board-htcvogue.panel_type=3" in default.txt

Internet isn't working: Besure that you have a active data connection in Windows Mobile -> Boot Android -> lauch Togga and click on "Connect"

And maybe add what works and what doesn't work.

Android boot's fine, and calls seem to work as well. But that is Togga? I've searched the forum and looked around in the Android menues without getting any wiser.

You can find Togga at the bottom of the main menu (be sure that you have the latest files from dzo (16-01-2009 or 19-01-2009, see startpost).
When you launch Togga and click on "connect" then Togga setup a data connection.

I have a question more than a new bug; Is the android version in these downloads some kind of testing or special development version? Because i miss certain options that are available on the G1 (like Gmail for instance). I would like to check out how android integrates with my google apps account. Calendar, Contact and Gmail i mean. And, if so, is there a way to update to a full version of android without losing the kernel stuff?

If you can't find "Togga" in your programs list then you should just make a folder called "AndroidApps" in the root of the sd card and put this file in there:

http://retrobits.googlecode.com/files/Togga_103.apk

It installs when android starts. Now you should have "Togga" in your programs list.

Maybe adding this into the startpost? And maybe it is clarifying to setup the different solutions as follows:

Internet isn't working
blablabla

I can't find Togga
Download Togga at http://....

Keep up the great work!

Android isn't a specific development or testing version (for as far as I know). I think when Android is fully working all these applications will be working too.

I'm getting a "Kernel Panic". It says that something is "not syncing".

I've got:
- Khax Touch Diamond V2.
- Radio 1.59.44.02
- Active internet connection (WiFi)
- The file I extracted to the root of my SD card is:
android-19-01-09.zip from http://it029000.massey.ac.nz/vogue/android-19-01-09.zip)
Size: 36,1 MB (37.816.774 bytes)

Two things:

your active internet connection needs to be via gprs rather than wifi - there are no wifi drivers available yet.

you need to replace the Zimage that you have now with the one listed from rogro at the top of this thread.

hope that helps

Use data.gz, haret.exe, initrd.gz, system.img and default.txt from latest android files 19-01-09

use rogro's latest zimage http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=147804&d=1232304684

WIFI don't work yet.
You must have a gprs/umts connection in winmo to get internet running.

Doing this way it works perfectly! Thanks a lot :D

It has a very slow startup.
SIM contacts are not accesed.

- Phone OK
- Internet Browser OK (some problems pressing buttons)
- Google Maps OK
- The search with Google at the right side of the home screen is not working. I could not enter any text. The keyboard just didn't appear.

Quite good, indeed!!! It looks amazing. What a big difference in the interface design... compared to Windows Mobile :)

- Calendar is not opening
- telefone is not disconnecting when i press the red button
- gallery is not working - because of camera problem ? but i can access my photos over OI File Manager and over the wallpaper-menu
- IM is not opening

sound is disabled because of my old radio (1.59.42.15)...
which is the last version i should flash on my device to get it work?

i can connect to internet with togga - it shows me ip and everything - but neither google maps nor email nor browser find this connection. (server not found) also a radio issue?

Hi Everyone,

First off, thank you again to marcelkordek for starting this thread, using the instructions at the beginning I was able to get a working setup that I look forward to testing up coming zimages with. This is the first time I have been able to connect to the web and make calls with Android on my phone!!!

I can pretty much confirm all the listed known bugs but can also add the following one.

*Cannot import contacts from SIM gives an error 'No contacts on your SIM card'.

Polaris - HTC Touch Curise.
M-Amime 2.0 WWE
1.59.44.02

Also is there a way to exit out of Android back to Windows Mobile instead of doing a reset?

Cheers

Ben

Congrats to the developers, and to marcelkordek for creating this thread.

Running fast and most importantly stable - can really see this being a viable alternative once the audio, contacts, calendar and sms/email bugs are sorted out.

Looking forward to the next update!

As there's nothing to 'install' (just copy stuff to the root of your memory card) I encourage everyone to take a look at this. Once you've finished playing, just soft reset and you're back to your Windows ROM.

Should we overwrite the zimage that comes with the 19-01-01 Android Package with the one from rogro82 ..?

I used the one from the extra archive.

Maybe also worth to include on the 1st post that after copying everything into the root directory you just start haret.exe

Great to have this new topic for testing and bugs :)! And nice to see so much users over here (2 pages in one day).

Also great news, 4 hours ago, DZO made sound working on the kaiser (think this is also working on our device). Also screen rotation is working (left handed only) which is not really something we want to see, but usefull for the kaiser :)). Also they reported that SMS is working (don't know if it was already working).

I think the only thing we have to figure out ourselves is the button mapping (EGPIO) which is different than the Kaiser. But for now Rogro doing a great job and I think he can convert every commit of DZO in the future to a working polaris version!

Some finetuning and we have a good working polaris version :)! I look forward to it!!

Think you have to wait for a flashable version (if it ever comes here)... Lots of initializations are still done by Windows Mobile (SIM + GPRS at the moment). Also the green flashing led is still a setting of WinMo.

But I also think we have to focus on EGPIO + IRQ.. (To be honest, I really don't know why, but DZO is also using it above the GPIO implementation of MSM). Saw that Radem explained it in the other thread (thought it was you?) the only difference I see (implementation wise) is that you can do egpio(3,4) instead of multiply 3 by 16 (hex) and add the 4 bits gpio(3*16+4).

unfortunately it wasn't me (I wish I had the clue :) ). But maybe the following article will explain something about GPIO's (I don't know for sure but "never shot, is always missed":) )

I have official WM 6.1 with 3d drivers

- is possible to import contacts from my WM PDA database ?

Which radio version problem do you mean? And the latest commits from dzo are not implemented yet in the latest zimage of Rogro.

There was an incompatibility of the SDcard implementation on kaiser... Kaiser should have a radio > 1.70 to make it work... but an hour later DZO already released a new version (PIO mode) which is working on all radio's...

[guessing mode]but our 1.59 version of radio doesn't have to differ with the 1.70 of the kaiser. Version numbering is all messed up between devices (as far as I know). Kaiser doesn't have a 1.59 version, while it's the latest polaris radio (even later released than the kaiser one I thought) [/guessing mode]

So it should work alright, and it is not depending on what radio you use... what might be the problem while booting android, is other hardware beside PHONE + active g3/gprs, like WIFI or bluetooth (also a guess). You should be able to boot with every radio as far as we know (since my device has the older 1.5? version, and someone reported that the 1.59 version is working).

The wheel don't work properly for me.

A question about DATA.

If i enter good ppp.username and password my android will be able to connect to my operator.
Does it use DATA connection ?
Cause i don"t want to use all my data for this month with android , but only want to test phone and sms, no sync or internet.

If there is a sync driver avalaible is it possible to sync our polaris under Android and use USB to have internet on it like WM?

Don't connect trough Togga (don't setup a data connection before booting to Android).

YES.

Ok so i can enter ppp username and password without any android data connection when i boot.
It's just to avoid the alert popup message which says android can't run phone.xxxxx.xxxx. package appears every 15 seconds

Yes, I have the same problem. Some can establish a data connection and some don't. I think this will be solved in the future, but for now you can't do anything to let it work I guess.

To answer my own question about the differences between the Android on G1 and the Android from the SDK and especially the google specific syncing stuff:

As android is completely open source i've found that certain google specific programs (*.apk) are closed source and not released as part of the SDK. I do wonder though if it is possible to add these programs nonetheless, cause some of them are pretty much primary android functionality for me. Especially the syncing with my google account and Gmail are the core reasons why i would ditch winmo in favor of android.

Hey,

it's good to see the progress of porting Android to Polaris... Nice work!

Can someone let me know how to close an application? The call end (red) button just goes back to the previous screen (or page in the browser).

Or is there a way to switch between the running apps? Or a kind of "list of running applications/processes" ?

Thanks

adabra

Can someone let me know how to close an application? The call end (red) button just goes back to the previous screen (or page in the browser).

To answer my own question, this is what I found:

There is no such thing as "closing the application" or "auto exiting
the app" in the android application model. Please see here for more
info: http://code.google.com/android/intro/appmodel.html

In particular, our model is that for the user all applications are
always running all of the time, and we very explicitly do NOT want the
user to ever have to deal with things like closing applications to
free up resources. The system will take care of killing application
processes when their resources are needed elsewhere, and you work with
the system to ensure that when the user returns to your app it is
restored to its last seen state.

If you want your app to reset each time the user returns to it, then
use android:clearTaskOnLaunch=true for the main activity of your app
-- see http://code.google.com/android/reference/android/R.styleable.html#And...

If you want the user pressing the back button to close your app...
well, first, this is strongly discouraged, because it is inconsistent
with how other applications work. One standard convention we use,
though, is to have a menu option to return to the first activity of
the app. This can be done by calling startActivity() for your root
task, with the FLAG_ACTIVITY_CLEAR_TOP set in the Intent -- see
http://code.google.com/android/reference/android/content/Intent.html#...

Hello !

I can't boot android (Kernel Panic)... But when there isn't sim card it says there isn't ext2 partition. Then it says it can't mount /data
I'm using 01/19/09 rogro82's zImage and Android Vogue package found on the first page of this thread. I'll try the latest rogro82's zImage...
Do I need to format my SD card ?

Well I just can see the keyboard when pressing the camera button \o/

Thank you for your job ! I would really enjoy using Android on my HTC touch cruise !

PS : Excuse my mistakes, I really speak english really bad... and you can't hear me speaking...

"Telefone isn't disconnecting when pressing red button"

Is that a bug? On the G1, you press the POWER button to end the call, and last time I checked, pressing the power button on Polaris also ends the call. Their back button, which is mapped to our end call button, only goes back and doesn't end calls.

My polaris:
-udk diamond r7 ita(no 3d drivers)
-radio 1.59.44.02
-android of today(20/01)

not works:
-send sms message
-red button to close calling(already known)
-ringtone during incoming call
-mp4 video play in black/white and low resolution(because of 3d drivers?)

The rest is simply amazing, faster and much better of everythings else!

During running android, what's happen to wm?
Thank you:)

My polaris:

How did you get the rest of the sound except ringtone to work whilst the phone's front speaker still works for calls?

I use the 20/01/09 big sound and small sound zimages from rogro, as well as the system.img from dzo.

Small sound, call initiated on other phone:
- the call ends abrubtly after some time on the other phone
- voice can't be heard on any of the phones
- end call doesn't work after the call ends abruptly on other phone.

Small sound, call initiated on Polaris:
- only very tiny speech on Polaris, generated from back speaker
- microphone still doesn't work (voice can't be heard on any of the phones)

Big sound, any call:
- no sound on either end

Note: After testing, returning to the old zimage where there was no music/ringtone but there was speech, speech can still be heard loud and clear on either end, and there would be no disconnection problems.

You should open with a pc and move the software in sd card.

RoGro82 released a new zImage (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=3209044&postcount=444).

Is it sufficient just to upload this into the root of the SD Card or do you also need a new Android Vogue package ?

I am using the one from the 19.01.2009 (data.img) from the beginning of this post.

good to know...

.. an offtopic (?) question ... what happens to winmo while I start Android through haret... becouse it seems the winmo core is used in android too... like Togga, wich uses my internet connection settings in winmo... or the settings are kept in the "radio", and togga reads them from there ?
If that is what happens, why it cannot use the rest of the "radio", like camera ?

Not sure whether this has bean mentioned already, but I turned down the volume on a video clip that was playing and when Android indicated that the volume/speaker should be off, there was still sounds relating to the video clip being played, albeit low. It was still distinguishable.

I get the impression that the volume controls might need some calibration?????

hope this helps

Yesterday I have changed my Radio ROM to a new one (1.64.08.21). I don't have good experience with this Radio ROM, because calling was impossible in WM. So I have changed my Radio ROM back to the one I got (1.59.42.15) but now I can't setup a data connection in Android. Nothing has changed in Android or the files belong to Android, so it has to do with the Radio ROM.
I think that Android is too heavily depending on the Radio ROM used in Windows Mobile and the working of some functions is heavy fluctuating at this moment. So this could explain why Rogro can't make calls for example.

Oh, I did the same thing(also yesterday) but my upgrade from 1.59.42.15 to 1.64.08.21 did not work. I had to reinstall the original HTC ROM..

I can send SMS, make and receive calls with no audio but I have not got the data connection to work, probably I have the wrong things in settings.

It's related to the Radio ROM, because I have used the Radio ROM 1.59.42.15 before and everything worked fine (sms, call, data connection). The only thing I have done is upgrading the Radio ROM to the newest one and changed it back. Since I changed it back I can't setup a data connection while nothing has changed in Android.

What do you see in this screen?

To get as many things working as possible:
- Disable PIN (phone settings)
- Disable Wifi and GPS (just do)
- Change your APN settings to the right one...
- Reboot your phone
- Enable 3g / dataconnection (so start Opera, and wait until it loads google.com)
- Start haret
- Start Togga
- Click on Connect

Could we port the G1 versions somehow? I do have the apk's and some sort of odex files ... just putting the apk in AndroidApps doesn't work though.

I have updated my Polaris with the newest system.img and zImage.

First, I noticed a bug(?) when selecting CapsLock in the keyboard. Small letters even when CapsLock was selected. By choosing "numbers" and then switching back to letters I got CapsLock to work as normal.

Pressing the camera button for landscape mode now turns the screen 90 degrees to the right (anti clockwise :)), before it was in the other, correct, direction.

A data connection using Togga has never worked for me. Now I get another result, with the newer files:
Modem initialization started
Modem initialization completed
Done!
Internet connection is OFF.

I tried to upgrade my radio, using udKīs custom exe (the one with the trojans inside :D), but it failed all the times. 0% everytime, so I guess I have no chance using Android for surfing as long as only some radio version are required.

By the way, I have downloaded the Android SDK, and I might try to see if I can contribute if I get some spare time. I have a six week old baby at home...

i am using ROM from my signature. I take new 2GB MicroSD card formated to FAT (not FAT32). [on Second card which is in FAT32, but where ihave files (maps, mp3, phoots, ...) haret doesnt work too, with same breezeing]

Files/Directories are from package -> 21/01/09 - Android Vogue Package from DZO:
AndroidApps\ (nothing there...)
EncFiltLog.menc
system.img -> updated to 27/01/09 - from mullins07
zImage -> updated to 30/01/09 - from rogro
default-kaiser.txt
initrd.gz
haret.exe
default.txt
data.gz

I do not edit any files, only overwrite with the newest.

So i start File Explorer, run HARET [v.0.5.2]. After launch there is default.txt so i click on Run. Then i see HaRET: Booting Linux ... and green line after few seconds on 100%. After this everything is breeze and only green led is flashing normaly.

Its created this log on card:
http://rapidshare.com/files/191641483/EncFiltLog.menc

Pls help, its my first time using and sory for bad english.
RESPECT YOUR WORK :)

I get this in the console screen before android boots up.

Any idea whats wrong?

Thank you for your help.

Hi!

I use this latest package from the first post:
Package
01/02/09 - Android Polaris Package 01-02-09_polaris-package.zip these are the files i use. works for me!!

I can't get phone to work.

I'm on t-mobile network in Croatia. As I could see on their web pages on all network connections (gprs, mms ...) they say leave blank for username and password.

So in default.txt I tried this combinations:
set cmdline "ppp.username=eplus ppp.password=gprs"
set cmdline "ppp.username= ppp.password="
#set cmdline "ppp.username= ppp.password="
I also tried deleting that line complitely.

I also tried to use SIM card from another network vipnet.
I changed default.txt line to this:
set cmdline "ppp.username=38591 ppp.password=38591"
That is information I found here http://android.v-dh.nl/internet.php#croatia

I have original HTC WM 6.1 ROM.
ROM version 3.13.405.0 WWE
ROM date: 08/21/08
Radio version: 1.59.42.15
Protocol version: 25.85.30.07W

Every time I try to use phone (dialer) I get message not registered on network.
In notification area it says android and T-mobile HR (which means T-mobile croatia).

thank you for help

I have replaced my files with the latest ones from the first post and here is my experience in brief. I am not really looking to fix it as I am quite happy to wait for the next set of files and repost if anything has changed....

* On boot I got a error indicating the calender process had an error...
* Togga has stopped working.
* Unable to hang up call from either power button or end key.
* No in call audio either directions.
* When trying to end the call the phone virtually stopped responding, the menus flashed up briefly after a while but then went unresponsive again, almost felt like the CPU was maxing out.
* Boot splash alien image is no longer centered on the screen.

At one time or another all of the above has worked so I am really not stressing at this point and just monitoring the development progress.

Keep up the good work guys!

Hello,
is there any HaRET booting Android on my official HTC 6.0 ROM?
I would like to test Android on my Cruise, without reflashing the last official ROM image.
Louis.

I don't see any problem using Haret or android on official winmo 6.0, there were some radio problems in the past these are solved. There could be a problem if you don't have hard-spl, but don't exactly know where these problems come from (maybe someone else can explain this). Have you given it a try yet?

What I see on the screen when I launch HaRET, is that completion bar that remains at 100% all the time, no linux terminal appears on the screen.

I suppose that I don't have any hard-spl installed... well, at least I never installed one, so I suppose it was not present on my HTC when I bought it.
If you say that HaRET should boot linux wo problems on a relatively old ROM, then I should give a try installing a hard-spl.

Installing this hard-spl, is it harmfull for my data? Could it crash my phone?

Thanks for response.

Decompressed it in the root of an empty 1Go SD.
I verified that MTYPE is well equal to 1723
When I run HaRET, and push on run button, I see the progress bar up to 100%, and then nothing else. My Polaris is frozen.

In fact, I got Android booting only once (hence wrote I the post to tell that I found my error). I tried to use the camera application, which freezed Android. After that, I tried again, but without success.

I tried to download the .zip file again this morning, overwritting files on my SD.
I even tried not to modify default.txt file (fearing to introduce some bad formatting, like \r\n or spaces not understood by HaRET).
Same behaviour : HaRET hangs.
Up to now, I started Android test package only once successfully.
I am puzzled, and I don't have any way to understand what's wrong... :(

The HaRET startup is still remaining fuzzy. I managed to start Android a second time.
Now I got some bugs to report ; I don't know if this thread is waiting for such report, but anyways, it can be valuable, because detected by a non android-specialist like me.

1) when you choose the camera application, you switch to landscape mode, and if you push on the red-phone hard key, the desktop remains in landscape.
I have done this procedure two or three times, and finally, it went back to portrait mode. Strange.
2) the camera application does not takes any picture. A message says to push on the capture button, but no effect.
3) when opening the Terminal Emulator (in the Dev Tools menu), I don't know how to get the keyboard on the screen. This terminal is a little bit useless without keyboard

But finally, in some month, Android would really become my OS on my HTC. I am impressed, and impatient to try other releases.

I am using..

1) 01/02/09 - Android Polaris Package 01-02-09_polaris-package.zip
2) 05/02/09 - zimage from rogro
3) New system.img dzo upload on his site from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=3277367&postcount=639

Messed around with the default.txt file..
set cmdline "ppp.apn=internet.fido.ca ppp.username=fido ppp.password=fido"

Followed the data help guide to set up internet.

My results are no internet. Can't get connection, and it asks to turn on roaming (normal for my carrier) so I say yes, try to turn it on, and Android freaks out and force closes.

Also, is it normal for me to have to hold the power button to keep the power off screen on the display? if i let go, it just turns screen off.

Please ask for any other info if needed.

Dzo said in the kaiser thread there is a red led visible, but when do you have to see this red led?

Led code isn't working yet (I guess) on polaris, I never saw the red led blink. But I have a working internet connection... Btw for the people who are failing with internet, please give the following details:

Radio version
Togga information (what error did togga gave).

If togga gives the error "can't connect" and then tries it again, your apn, username or password combo is wrong! If there is no password or username, use ppp.username=\"\" and/or ppp.password=\"\". Most of the internet settings can be found over here: http://android.v-dh.nl/internet.php, but you can also google on "apn <your provider> <your country>" on google (without the "") for the right settings, which can give better results!

Please make shure that you had an active connection in WinMo!

Have you set the correct MTYPE according to the kernel you use?
Did you put all files to the root of your SD-card?

But I have some problems:
1 - Unable to have the SFR network and internet use, etc..
SIM pin disabled in Win? Data connection active before booting to Android?
2 - The camera does not work on my Cruise with the last elements download. YES? why did you expect a working camera? We know it isn't working.

In addition I would like to know how to return to Windows without restarting the mobile phone.
Not going to happen.

set cmdline "ppp.username = \ ppp.password = \"

If you're trying to use an empty username & password - that's the way to do it:
set cmdline "ppp.username = \"\" ppp.password = \"\""
(only working with recent files)

I use 21/01/09 - Android Vogue Package android-21-01-09.zip from DZO and it just hangs on booting linux, though maybe I'm not suppose to use the whole package since it's for vogue.. ? Confusing..so many sources of information and files.

Tried the 01/02/09 - Android Polaris Package 01-02-09_polaris-package.zip but I can never get a network connection and always have to turn on data roaming, which makes Android say the process crashes etc.. actually now it just crashes and hangs on booting linux in haret.. never happened before.. fresh install and everything.

System loads up when I don't have my SIM card in it.. but hangs on booting linux when I put sim card in. sim card is only about 1 year old, should be no pin or anything on it. I had internet working at some point on this phone, but have since tried different isntallations/updates

where can I read the development status for Polaris?
I don't understand well, could you explain me some obscure points:
1) I suppose that Android has to be taken as is from the Google repository
2) All that free developers have to do is to make the kernel for Polaris, Vogue, Kaizer, etc...). And it is a big job.
Is my analysis correct?

Some are saying that you need to use GPRS before starting HaRET. To make it work, I didn't need to use the internet just before starting HaRET. I do always have some connection because of (for example) weather plugin and mail starting the connection. With the latest version zImage (kernel) it started working for me:
04/02 new zImage Post #639 by Rogro82. Before this version, internet has never worked for me. It could be different for a different radio version though. My system.img is DZO's (from 01-02-09_polaris-package.zip). I tried it with the latest (http://it029000.massey.ac.nz/vogue/android-kaiser-09-02-09.zip) DZO system.img, but I didn't have working internet so I reverted. You may get different results, so let everyone know what works for you!

The battery runs out pretty quickly. I have to try different options (instead of pm.sleep_mode=1) to see what works best.

My default.txt has these 2 lines different:
MTYPE 1723
set cmdline "ppp.username=vodafone ppp.password=vodafone ppp.apn=live.vodafone.com pm.sleep_mode=1"

I had to remove all 'Access point names' under 'Mobile networks'. I recreated a single empty one. I only used the apn field (used the same as in the default.txt).

This now works with the Dutch Vodafone operator. Speeds seem to be ~ 3.6 mbit where coverage is good. I need to start togga and press connect. It has always worked the first time with rogro82's 04/02 kernel.

For those of you who missed it the solution is to edit the default.txt and amend it with this line Use "board-htcvogue.panel_type=3".

After that on boot i got this error msm_i2c msm_i2c.0: Error during data xfer (-5) and android hung after browsing this forum i found the answer here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=3253880
witch tell me to edit the defult.txt again and change the MTYPE to 1723. then android booted perfectly and fast to.

Hello all, i just upgraded to lastest zimage 4/2 (2nd) and system 09/02/09. while everything is working at least on my polaris it's a step backwards in terms of touch screen,
1. I try to open drop-down notifactions and the andriod pull-up menu opens,
2. Clicking on contact or maps makes to screen slide to search google widget screen.
3. using shortcuts within pull-up menu is buggy differnt items open or nothing happens at all.

all the issues seem to be relate back to a touch screen driver issue rather then a software issue.
(But i am not a programmer and I could be just talk out my bottom!)

other then that it is superfast and getting really good.

I am trying: 01/02/09 - Android Polaris Package
And 05/02/09 - zimage from rogro
And 04/02/09 - zimage from rogro

But I do not manage to be able to connect to Internet, nor to use wifi.

First I download 01/02/09 - Android Polaris Package
and then replace the file zimage, and then copy them in my Cruise (in memory card)... it is it correctly?
And another question ... applications for install on android??
For USB the computer does not also recognize me to the Cruise,

Just a friendly hello from the Kaiser side of things. Awhile ago I created a wiki:

http://www.androidonhtc.com/ or http://www.androidonhtc.com/polaris

Right now it's pretty much got Kaiser/TyTN II info only, but I've tried to keep it as device agnostic as possible with different sections for each device. Feel free to use it!

(I set up http://www.androidonhtc.com/polaris:latest_builds with the info from the first post here)

Hi,
first of all: absolutly great job!! Thank you to all the developers!!

Here some thinks you could even more improve, from my point of view:

Browser:
The "+" an "-" buttons to enlarge/shrink the text are very big. I guess its the standard-size from the original G1 screen resolution, but on the HTC-Polaris it takes to much space. Browsing is difficult, because you tend to touch the buttons while scolling. Its only a small thing, but as a core application for me its important.

Google-Account:
Many of you may have concerns because data security, but on a long term view I would like to have (an optional!) google-account-support. Its easy then to access the calendar and contacts an most important of all: You can sync the data then. And one can use the built in android google-mail-client.

Four questions:
1) Battery-Icon
Since the last zImage I have a working battery-icon in the top right corner. Where can I change battery-connected settings in the user menu? E.g. is it possible to see how many MINUTES or PERCENT battery-capacity is left?

2) default.txt
Also connected with the battery-status: As far as I know I have several options (1-4) to set the sleep-modus in the default.txt. The desciptions of the modi a very cryptic. I have no idea what the differents are and how to set it in the default.txt.
I googled a lot in the forum, but I did not find how to set them.
By the way: Why isn't there a preconfigured default.txt to download? Does anyone have an link where I can read more about or an download-link?

3) The mail-program is very poor. Does anyone know a .apk to dowload, which is better?

4) Whats the general problem with the calendar? The google-account? Is there .apk for a local on-the-phone-calendar?

Once again: Great job!

Thank you,
Christian

Togga says I am connected and that the connection is on, but I can't navigation anywhere on the webs..

I downloaded the new zImage from 10-02. But now it always freeze when haret is at 100%. I could see that the device works in the background cause, when i wait a moment, then the display goes darker and after another 15 seconds the display and the lights are off.

What could i do to resolve this problem.

Another problem is that i couldn't establish a internet connection. GPRS is on in WinMo. After starting haret and starting Togga it is trying three times but fails.

Any suggestion??

Jimbo# For booting problem, maybe not enough space on you Memory Card, or also could come from a bad default.txt (but it would have pass the haret screen...)

For you Internet connection, you must have misconfigured default.txt (that was my problem) try also to connect to 3g before launching haret

Hey,

I've been trying for a while now to run Android on my Polaris but with no luck.

I now have this version of Android http://rapidshare.com/files/192510679/01-02-09_polaris-package.zip with this zImage: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=153926&d=1233818346.

Also this is how my default.txt looks like:

set RAMSIZE 0x08000000
set MTYPE 1667
set KERNEL zImage
set initrd initrd.gz

set cmdline "ppp.username=USER ppp.password=PASS"

board-htcvogue.panel_type=3"
boot

When I run haret it prompts me to select witch config file I want to use, I select "default.txt". After that a loading bar titled "Bootin Linux" loads but after it reaches 100% the device freezes and I have to reset.

I've searched the forum with no luck until now...
Do you guys have any ideas in this?

Thanks

radem205

Your default.txt is seriously messed up! You have to set the mtype to 1723. This is how it will look like:

set RAMSIZE 0x08000000
set MTYPE 1723
set KERNEL zImage
set initrd initrd.gz

set cmdline "ppp.username=USER ppp.password=PASS board-htcvogue.panel_type=3"
boot

Hi everybody, and thanks to every people who works on Android for Polaris.

As everybody here, I try Android on my Polaris. It's really beautiful but I have some difficulties to get connected on my network (not internet, just to call and sms). I have entered the good ppp.username and ppp.password. To succeed in, I have to enter 2 bad PIN2 (bad because I haven't PIN2) then to search networks 2 times. It's the first problem.

The seconde one is that my phone switch off after less than 10 hours of working. For example, I charge it all the night, I switch it on at 8 am. All the day, the battery seems full (85 %). But at 5 pm, the phone turns off, every day !! I don't understand why.

Thanks in advance for the help

I've been doing some testing with some of the current roms to see why some users can boot into Android with no issues and some struggle.

I recently decided to change from gullum tf3d - a very good rom but I dont like Manilla that much - horses for courses - I preferred the look of Maxnipers omnio rom but since he is unable to update this I tried gullums. The problem with Manilla roms is they leave you with between 30-40mb of program memory and thats a startup. Recently the Omnio styled FEWidgets was re-released which I tried and found to my liking - its very low memory footprint too - so I decided to go for a naked rom and add FEWidgets to see what I would get and found to my suprise I still had 70mb of program memory even after FEWidgets had loaded - woohoo!

The problem was - Android booted fine without FEWidgets but failed to load with it

I tried multiple combinations and still no luck - so hard reset and this time loaded all my usual program, contacts etc and ran haret.. booted fine!

This got me thinking why the problem exists. Omnio rom booted fine 100% of the time. Gullums rom was also ok most of the time (I was playing with system images at the time so that could have resulted in some of the failures). Also UDK's roms have been reported to work with Android too.

I tried some tests:

Naked litv3 rom - Android boots fine.
Gullums TF3D rom with no added programs - boots fine.
Maxnipers Omnio rom - boots fine 100% of the time.

Naked litv3 rom with htc home screen addons - Occaisonal in Android.
Naked litv3 rom with htc home plug Today - Android boots fine.
Naked litv3 with FEWidgets - No boot in Android.
Naked litv3 with Manilla 2D added - no boot in Android.
Naked litv3 with Winterface - boots fine.

Some of these results may change as I find out what makes Android tick, but my current theory on this is that if a rom confirmed working on Android is used without any additions, Android should boot fine. If after adding extra programs it fails then you should back track and fine what program is affecting the boot up. This might sound crazy and Android unloads Windows before it boots but maybe its the unloading thats the problem, as in whats running in memory when you boot Android.

Its a theory and I will keep testing to see whether I can find something concrete but I would recommend to anyone wishing to test Android to try booting from a clean confirmed working rom first before posting for help.

the kernel zimages are beinng posted in the Kaiser thread (link IS in the Polaris development thread post 1).

We're waiting on the G2 rom dump as it contains a keyboard and, if rumours are to be believed some working drivers for the missing bits as well.

Polaris devs are few at the moment, we're getting by mostly from kind help from Kaiser and Nike devs.

3rd April 2009, 12:27 AM
Which reminds me, Maxniper has agreed to create a naked omnia rom which I've recommended as the best rom alongside radio 1.59.44.02 to use with Android as I always get boot with and more importantly working 3G.

He's asking for some testers for the rom as he no longer has a polaris.

Anyone interested in helping, please pm me and I will explain what we need to do (remember this will be a nice fast rom with 3d drivers and the openvg drivers from neos making it very smooth indeed). Marcel I hope you'll be one of the interested parties.

The rom will have Microsoft office, opera, 3d drivers and maybe flash and thats it, but I'm open to suggestions.

The goal is to have one recommended lite/naked rom that can boot into windows then Android fast and still allow for gaming and Office use (since android doesnt have this) in windows when required.

I really don't understand this stuff.

I had all my internet settings in the default.txt and in the connection settings in android.

I ran modem.apk and the connection was successfull, had ip address etc etc, app said i was good to go.

Browser did not work

Decided to remove all internet settings in default.txt, and only use the APN in androids connection settings.

Tried to connect via modem.apk, it failed, ok fine.

Then went back to putting internet settings in default.txt, and putting username and password back into android settings, EXACTLY LIKE THE FIRST TIME I TRIED IT, and now it won't even connect with modem apk.

3 attempts, 2 of the 3 attemps had the exact same process and exact same settings, but only 1 time did it work.

Does not make any sense. Why would it get the connection the first time around, but not the second. Very confusing.

Hey

I'm using the last version of zImage on the forum, and i still getting a big error : i could nt synchronize my Android with Google.

My configuration is simple, i'm using a Polaris with the last UdK rom, my APN is wapsfr (from SFR provider), configured in the default.txt and also in the APN configuration menu. I'm enable to surf on the web without using Togga (modem is just fine).

The question is I think : is it possible to synchronize to my Google Account ? Does my problem come from my provider, which block some internet port, user-agent (i don't think but...) or maybe the fact that I ve read that you could not connect to a google account with Android 1.5 unless it comes from a G1 or a G2....

If someone have the answer, I'm interrested since it is the last problem before using Android daily :D

- Get the Q&D keyboard application from http://code.google.com/p/netgents/downloads/detail?name=qad-keyboard.apk&can=2&q= and place it in the AndroidApps folder on your card so it'll automagically install on first boot.
- Change your default.txt to get working internet settings (mine is below as example)
- Boot 1.1.
- Connect using Togga
- Start the Q&D keyboard. It works like a copy and paste application; Type your text, press ok and the text is on your clipboard you can paste it anywhere you like. The Q&D keyboard remains in the messages area of android.
Wit the keyboard:
1. Make your APN settings.
2. Make your google services sync settings

- Don't make too many changes and settings in 1.1., it could break the boot of 1.5.
- Now download the 1.5. android files initrd.gz and system.img from f00bar from http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=001888caeaf3c584d956df2962098fcbe04e75f6 e8ebb871 and overwrite these two files on your current installation.
- Boot up Android 1.5 (notice the new bootscreen).
- Connect to internet using the Modem application.
- Voila!

This is my default.txt for t-mobile NL (check http://android.v-dh.nl/internet.php for other APN settings):

#Polaris
set RAMSIZE 0x08000000
set MTYPE 1723
set KERNEL zImage
set initrd initrd.gz

set cmdline "ppp.apn=internet ppp.username=t-mobile ppp.password=t-mobile mddi.width=240 mddi.height=320 mddi_client_vogue.vsync=0 pm.sleep_mode=0 board-htcpolaris.panel_type=0"
boot

Note: make sure you use the mddi settings as above!

So i have followed your tutorial, which seems particularly clear to me. I can connect to 3g network easily on 1.1 using togga, but google services do not synchronize....

The more i use itm the more i think google services are using a specific port for the syncm and this port seems to be blocked on SFR SL2SFR APN... i will try some other configurations

Maybe you can check the numbers for MCN and MCC in the APN settings. That was what was keeping the data synchronisation from operating properly (refusing connection) even though Togga could connect and the Browser worked. After I also filled in the proper numbers for those fields, I saw a '3G'logo added to the top of the screen. And synchronisation worked with 1.1.

I'm now replacing 1.1 with the 1.5 initrd and system files, keeping my fingers crossed.

Great post. Personally, I couldn't get it working to the Internet via Togga, but I may have screwed up my APN, will have to try again. I also didn't like the fact I had to use the QnD Keyboard. But thats a minor inconvenience.

But I wanted to point out that DZO has an alternative Image posted as Android.zip which is the Cupcake version (Android v1.5) and works fine for me. What I don't like about his releases is that its missing the Android Marketplace and Calendar doesn't work. Here is the direct link http://it029000.massey.ac.nz/vogue/files/android.zip which was last updated 4/20.

It's working, in fact it was the MCC & MCN which were false... Nevertheless, it appears to work for me without putting any MCC & MCN settings (maybe herited from WM or automatic on phone operator...).

So now I've sync all my buddies, I've some difficulties : Android freeze a lot when it goes to sleep (maybe i can tune the default.txt...).

Apps Store is working great (except for the terminal app :(, and I Windows Vista recognize the USB as Android port, but the G1 or G2 drivers does not seem to work.

The cupcake is very useful (long press on red make it appear or desappear although it does not work on a 1,5 dev G1 :D)

I've compared at work the G1 1.5 developper and the polaris, and the speed difference is not very noticeable...

Thx for all your work, really enjoy using a bit Android and an another device than G1 or G2 ;) I've seen the Samsung Android, it is actually quite a good design ;)

Make sure you have your mddi settings like in my example default.txt. The only thing i notice is that the fontsize is somewhat big, especially in Gmail, but i haven't had an y applications that didn't fit the screen.

There are bigger data.gz files available around these forums which extract to 128 Mb instead of 64Mb. A search would give results. Also the SDcard is not working in 1.5 (yet). This is very easy fix, but noone took the effort to actually release new 1.5 files.

i downloaded latest package 20/4 unzipped all in sd card. run haret no chance to load, it freeze when "booting linux" comes to the end.
so i try editing the default.txt, if i change ram value x080... to x070.. now after booting linux it show a weird graphic image like it started rebooting the device but i can't see the linux console begin to load and compile...freeze again.
don't know i tried several times, deactivated from wm 6.5 all unnecessary programs to free some memory before run haret no success.

only once with a default.txt full of kaiser vogue and polaris cmd lines it started till "android" loading image but then rebooted itself without any chance to see the new os...second time with same default no success like before...

any suggestion?

I can establish a data connection in togga, it says connected and the ip i have, but i cannot access the internet. I think it also isnt a dns issue, because using an ip address in the browser also doesnt work. It is no matter whether i am online in winmo when i boot android or not. Internet connection in winmo is working without problems.

My radio is 1.59.42.15. Could it help to try to get another rom or radio working? Currently, i have the original winmo 6.1 O2 rom and no hardspl or similar installed.

My isp is Tchibo, using the german O2 network.

Am I the only one who is completey dumbfounded as to what I'm supposed to do with this Q&D keyboard, and what exactly I'm supposed to do to enter these settings, ESPECIALLY Google sync? I'm sooo confused...

That's correct! in fact it worked for me! As clean install use DZO's latest 1.1 version and include Q&D keyboard in the AndroidApps folder.
After booting the 1.1 make sure you have a 3g connection via Togga, then use the Q&D keyboard for signing in on Data synchronization settings.
If you don't get a 3g connection, be sure your default.txt is correct.
From here continue with Michel82's tutorial...

this version works well but seems to not fit perfectly with Polaris phone. Some apps are bigger than the screen and there's no "home" neither "right" and "OK" buttons.
I have now tried all versions supposed to work on Polaris and there's no perfect version yet.

i've noticed that the battery read in the android system is not match with what read on the winmo's system, i've notice that when the battery in the android reads 77% its actually read 59% on the winmo's... so it makes our polaris suddenly deads after some periods of time...

Hi Bally3

I just succeeded to boot with 3lit3 VII lite (include m2d) by disabling M2D as today plugin, then softreset and then I was able to boot...

I've been using Rukako's Deadlink rom and it does seem to me that there might be a memory issue.

For all those having issues, follow what Juanmre did and switch off M2D, reboot and then retry.

I noticed this happening when I started to use 1.5 files, so maybe its to do with that. Also if you're having problems. do not use the large 500Mb data.gz files, stick with the 128Mb ones or better still the 64Mb one.
