Well, here it is, a new rom since Asus last put out a rom update back in 2008.

Thanks to Makuu (especially), Lenny, AstainHellbring, the creators of the tools I used to make this rom, and anyone else that I failed to mention in name who gave me the knowledge to complete this rom.

Asus Mypal A6x6 WM6.1.4 version 1
Windows CE version 5.2.20757 (Build 20757.1.4.0)

This was tested on an Asus Mypal A626 (and works). It should work with the A686/A696, but the other models were not tested.

Updates

Office Mobile with the addition of a zip decompressor

Additions (due to OS update)

Task Manager
domain enrollment
support for Microsoft System Center Mobile Device Manager

Removals
none

I really just took the stock Asus rom from the latest OEM update and upgraded the os.

download: http://sharecash.org/download.php?file=135906

At this time, this will be the only download link. Mirrors will be created in the future (after I give permission).

Instructions

Before you do anything, make sure you have at least a 256mb SD card and a card reader (you can get one at a place like Radio Shack or Office Depot). You also need to install winrar (found at http://www.win-rar.com/index.php?id=943&dl=wrar390.exe). Your SD card must be formatted with the FAT16 file system.

To format your SD Card with the FAT16 file system

Step 1: To do this insert the SD Card into the reader and go to "My Computer".
Step 1a: BACKUP YOUR FILES before you start!!
Step 2: Right-click the drive letter of the SD Card reader (differs for each computer, probably either E:\ or F:\ or G:\) and click "Format".
Step 2a: Don't worry about any of the options except for file system, choose "FAT"
Step 3: Click "Start" and wait until it is done

Step 1: Get (OS) rom image
Step 2: Extract files to any folder on hard drive using Winrar
Step 3: Go to the folder where you extracted the files in the RAR archive
Step 4: Make sure that the filename is "CANNES_A_WM6.img"
Step 4a: if the img file it's not exactly "CANNES_A_WM6.img", rename it to that
Step 5: Format the SD card if you haven't already done so using the instructions above
Step 6: Copy the img file to the SD card, see step 6a
Step 6a: Make sure that the img file is the ONLY file on the SD card after formatting
Step 7: Take SD Card out of SD Card reader and put it in the a6x6
Step 8: Make sure that the a6x6 is plugged in via ac adapter before doing the next few steps
Step 9: activate SD Loader using the following instructions {
Step 9a: Hold down the power button and enter button (that's the button in the center of the d-pad)
Step 9b: Double tap the soft reset button while holding the other 2 buttons
Step 9c: After double tapping the soft reset button, keep the other 2 buttons held until a blue screen comes up that says something like Asus Cannes flashing utility
Step 9d: Wait until the process is finished (it's near the end when it says "writing private")
}
Step 10: At this point, your a6x6 should reboot on its own
Step 11: enjoy your updated rom

If you have any questions, feel free to just post or PM me.

Update: As I release new roms, if you have a support question, please give me the rom version so I know what rom you are working with. You can get the rom version from the filename of the rom pack.

Example: Asus_A626_WM614_1
A626 = device (most often it will be A626, will rarely be different), WM614 = os version, 1 = release #

It doesn't work on A696.
Flashing ok but on reboot it stay on Blue Asus logo.
Have to downgrade with USBLoader.

Try formatting the sd card with http://www.sdcard.org/consumers/formatter/ (you want full erase, not quick erase), then try the formatting and flashing instructions again. It can't hurt to run scandisk on the sd card either (check both fix and repair).

I tryed what you said, no luck.
I succesfully installed 6.1 from Globalbus (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4613956&postcount=20) but it suffer from translation problems.
Back to 6.0.
Ready to test future versions as 6.1 is MUCH faster to launch apps.

Thanks for the update Steven.

I'll be flashing tonight after work. I have to dig around to find a smaller SD card. Can the img be converted to an nb0 file that I can flash over usb? I found a tool called img2nb0 that was used with the Dell Axims but it didn't seem to convert correctly... I get a 0 byte output file. It's a dotnet program so I'm going to try to decompile it tonight and see if I can understand it at all.

I'll post later tonight when I've gotten it flashed and tested.

I tryed, but no luck too :). Getting to something you call Asus Cannes flashing utility. It detects FAT16 SD Card and asking for external power. After plugging external power simply rebooting device after detecting SD card with no errors very quickly.

Use the formatting program I posted a link to before and then try all the steps again.

I did modify the instructions to include the part about plugging it in the wall. I forgot that the asus tech support dude said you had to have it plugged into the wall before it will work.

Don't waste your time. Unlike the dell axim, the a6x6 actually uses the img file as the flashing format (no extracting anything from the img file needed).

Who makes the sd card you are using and what is its size? SDHC cards will NOT work for this procedure, it must be a NORMAL SD card.

Also, the img file should be the ONLY file on the SD card after formatting.

Tryed to use USBLoader with this img file, get "CANNES_A_WM6.img is not a valid image file!" error. Next step was using SDFormatter with recomended settings (full erase, FAT16) - same thing with rebooting after detecting SD card (1GB Sandisk).

I was able to successfully flash my A626 tonight. Used a sandisk 1gb sd card. Formatted it with windows as FAT, did a full format not quick and copied just the img file. Rebooted the A626 using the instructions and it worked.

Played around a bit with WM, tested bluetooth and wifi. Installed my music program and it worked. Changed some settings around just to ensure that all worked.

Thanks for working on this Steven... let me know if there is anything specific you need tested. I'm going to leave it on the device. I use it everyday for a music player at work.

I might play around with the img2nb0 tool tomorrow after work just to see if I can get it to work.

It's good to see that at least 1 person verifies that my instructions and rom work.

You won't get the img2nb0 file to work at all on the asus rom. The img2nb0 tool was designed with the structure of (only) the axim rom in mind. It will not work with a non-axim rom (I tried it when I started my research on a626 rom cooking).

Is it possible for you to create NB0 file from clean (just after reflash or after hard reset)flashed device? This will help to create alternate method of flashing Asus A6x6 with this ROM.

I had this effect too.
Several tries later it worked !
I used a 256MB card with only one file.
I think that if something was wrong with the card or file, the flash sequence could not say "all ok".
There's something my A696 don't like.

I have sume suggestions about our problem. I think ,that problem is in AC adapter. I'm using some universal 5V 500mah adapter, that switch device into some data transfer mode (many usb devices charging only when connected to PC). So when I get Motorola AC adapter with MiniUSB I'll try to flash device from SD card.

When I tested the rom, I used the standard ac adapter that came with the device. I would say that the only "supported" ac adapter with my roms is the one that asus gave you in the package.

My A626 enters SD flashing mode but then it reboots before flashing the new rom. I use Kingston 512 MB SD card, I tried doing full format on it both with Windows tool and SDFormatter. Flashing Globalbus 6.1 via USB works OK.

I would be willing to do that but I would want Steven to "bless" that because it's his ROM and I don't want to create another distribution source without his approval.

As for the ROM it has been working all morning without issue.

Ok, there is a tool that I used to turn the the img into nb0 files. However, that tool splits it into 3 parts, (apparently bootloader, os, and storage). The bootloader and storage nb0 files should not be touched. As for the os nb0, I have no idea what effect flashing just the os nb0 (generated with the tool) part via usbloader would do. If you do try flashing just the os nb0 file via usbloader, you're on your own as far as support and recovery is concerned. Even if the usbloader thing worked, I have no idea what effect it would have on the bootloader and storage parts (the device could be scarred for life as far as it's concerned).

Just to give everyone an idea of a configuration that works: I use the exact same img file as I gave out, a 512mb Sandisk normal SD card (formatted with FAT-16 filesystem), internal or external sd card reader (I've tried both and it works, using a6x6 in mass storage mode or Softix Card Export II will not work), and Windows XP or Windows Vista (I've also tried both versions of Windows with success)

Would someone like me to make a youtube video demonstration (would that help)?

In the Cannes Kitchen there is DumpNB.cmd file, that creates nb0 file from flashed device (was here (http://cscn.com.ua/cannes_fw/cannes_kitchen_a1.rar), but I think you have the same distribution). Can you create nb0 file from flashed device? It would help to flash device using USBLoader.

Finally I did it. Used nb0 file through USBLoader. Strange thing - when flashing nb0, had same effect with restarting device. Succesful attempt was when after restart I put device into boot loader again and with USBLoader transfer 6.0 nb0 dump. For some reason after reflash I have 6.1 version :))). Don't mind about date format on today screen, I've changed regional options. For now I'm going sleep, and tomorrow I'll test this firmware version. Steven855 great thnx for your work. With this expirience may be 6.5 will be next? :)

I tried with my ASUS A696 the Globalbus "kitchen" (many thanks to you!) with WM 6.1 PLK, and it works great. I tried to modify it to have WM 6.5, but no luck yet. I did the following:
- replaced ROM, SYS and XIP folders with the one coming from WM 6.5 kitchens for other devices (HTC Hermes, HP 614x)
- replaced "dump" folder with the one from WM 6.5 kitchens and cooking bypassing the BuildOS step.

I can upload these modified ROMs to the device, but it won't boot (hangs on the "bluescreen" ASUS).

Do you have any clues for me? How to modify a working WM 6.1 kitchen to have a clean WM 6.5 kitchen for ASUS A696 ?? Anyone else is working on it?

Another happy WM 6.1 user here :)

I was really disappointed in version 6 from ASUS. For some reason it was horrendously slow, and without an option to downgrade I was pretty upset with the situation.
So I came here, and decided it worth trying to upgrade to 6.1. Surprisingly it worked flawlessly, and now my A696 is back to function good, (and even better), than before. And it's MUCH faster now.

Thanks!

After messing around with the kitchen, trying to get the rom to build right, I found a set of instructions that I completely overlooked for getting a clean WM6.5 rom build. I will those instructions tonight, and hope to have a working rom build by tomorrow. Luckily, I will be off for fall break starting on Friday night. I will have plenty of time to experiment then. By the way, what programs would you like to see in the next rom build (WM6.1 or WM6.5)? Besides the normal classic rom I put out for the a6x6, would anyone like to see a voip rom too (kind of like what Makuu made for the axim X51v)?

WM6.5 rom: I finally got the rom to build right, but I found out that size DOES matter, so I'm working on slimming down the rom with losing as little functionality as possible

WM6.1 rom kitchen: I have it made, but I have to write instructions before I publish it (yes, I know a lot of you can figure it out yourself, but I still need to write instructions for those who need a little help getting started)

WM6.5 rom kitchen: fat chance of that coming out anytime soon (I still haven't finished building a stable rom myself yet)

Thank you for your great work.

Really, if possible, cut out unnecessary items, such as phone elements.
As for me, my main wish is to have more RAM available on device. 30Mb is not enough for me. If it could be at least 35-40Mb - it would be perfect!

In order to satisfy all of your language demands, I will start the WM6.5 rom series with an earlier build so everyone can have it, and then the updates will mostly be in english (WWE), unless you can point me to an updated build in your language. Meanwhile, I am working on a later update behind closed doors, but at least the new rom will get everyone started on the right track. Even though I may put some WM6.5 roms out, I will continue to support the WM6.1(.4) roms.

You have to find a dump of the correct rom you wish to use.
Usualy you get a nk.nb0 file.
I have english and french 6.0 dumps.

You need a pc with Activesync and windows XP.

1.Attach the PDA to the PC with USB cable and disable ActiveSync allow usb connections from menu connections settings and open activesync when my device connect .

2. press on the PDA the keys POWER+ENTER+RESET, the PDA bootloader will start in upgrade mode by USB and wait for the firmware from the USB

3. usbloader nk.nb0 ( open command prompt window)

I just express my opinion,no offense !: "so I'm working on slimming down the rom with losing as little functionality as possible" verry good point !
"Of course you can cut the "phone" elements, since we all have non-phone asus devices." I do not know what contain rom 6.5 , I would like to believe "phone elements" not mean BTHandFreeDevice ,right ?, because I'd used a lot this function with navigator,in fact was great if BTHandFreeDevice has possibility to memorize contacts of the phone .Correct me if wrong!

I would consider my WM6.1.4 rom stable (it hasn't failed me yet, and I built the rom back in August). For those who don't quite like the eye candy of WM6.5, I will probably put out a few updated builds of the WM6.1 roms.

I have added a little message about support with the rom information.

Update: things are not looking good. My development computer has been having graphics problems lately (it has integrated graphics, so the graphics card sucks anyway), and it crashed today. Now, I have to start building the rom back from the beginning (luckily, my tools survived the incident and I have backups). I am sorry I won't have things ready by tomorrow.

hi, I'm user of Asus 696 from snow Russia )) (vodka, sputnik, gorbachoff)
:D
hope u can help me - got a problem with 696 - gps simply doesn't connect with sattelites. I' ve tried a lot of preferences, but still didn't reach any sucess, So I decided to update my firmware and - wow! - have found this forum. My asus with Windows mobile 6 onboard (CE 5.2.1239) - so, I have a few questions:
1. Will mr.Steven include a russian language support into this firmware?
2. Will this firmware WORK on Asus 696?
3. Will this firmware update my Windows Mobile automatically after flashing?

Hope you could help me, thank for your time

Hello,

I've tested the flashing of my french A696.
First, the SD Method. Using the original 512 MB SD formatted to Fat with XP.
Pressed Power + enter without releasing, and double-reset. I've seen the asus flashing utility... 2 seconds, and rebooted. I have retryed, the boot loops while holding power and enter....

So, alternate method, unpack the image with Aimg, and using usbloader. It has dowloaded the firmware, then rebooted. When up, I've seen windows welcome screen....in french !

So it is stayed windows mobile 6 classic french... (I've gained a super triple hard-reset :D)

Any idea ? Is it the language difference which makes things go wrong ?

Language doesn't matter.
Try SD-Card method without ac-power supply, it will hang on asking for external power then connect it to your pc with usb cable.
Try many times.

If you want I can send you my msn contact to speak french ;)

Hello, I tried many times also to install, and finally I managed to install. I used darky_mtp's method. Without power cable connected I tried several times before it started finally. I have a feeling that is related to the power adapter.

Bugs I found: Task Manager doesn't start and Asus Status doesn't show the running programs.

Many thanks Steven855 and all of you for posting your info.

Sorry to keep everyone in the dark with my status on rom building. I've had too many tests the last few days (because of midterms), and that's kept me from building roms. But anyway, while I figure out what the heck is wrong with (what seems like) every WM6.5 build I make (I'll eventually get it), I can give you all an updated WM6.1 rom to play with (something I KNOW I can make work).

The new WM6.1 rom is complete, and it WORKS! I still have to finalize a few things, mainly packaging, and will upload it today. Since I have the rest of the day off (my remaining classes today got cancelled), I will work on the WM6.5 rom, and hopefully have somthing ready by Monday. I am also experimenting with a method that will give me more space to put stuff in rom.

Hi Steven855

Installed after a couple of attempts using SD card method (2GB FAT 16)
After installing your ROM I was able to use SPB restore with no problems!
All my programs run as usual if a little more responsive.
Runs faster a feels like a new PDA!

Thank you so much for your time and skills, Very much appreciated!:)

I tryed, but no luck too :). Getting to something you call Asus Cannes flashing utility. It detects FAT16 SD Card and asking for external power. After plugging external power simply rebooting device after detecting SD card with no errors very quickly.

replace:0xC 09 04 => 36 D6 :)

The type 0xD636 designates that it is necessary to format flash before a flashing in any case. It usually put in images for services centres.

hey together,

I'd like to patch my A636N from WM5 to WM6.5 (english or german).
Does anybody have a matching ROM for doing that?

Thanks a lot! (and sorry if my question is stupid - I never tried that before)

I tried to flash my a636n with this ROM, but I just achived that my PDA is not turning on any more. After the flashing, when the restart should happen, it just turned off. I tried to reset it, remove the battery etc., but the screen remains off. I don't know what to do. Any ideas?

Attach usb charging cable.
Press and hold : Power + Enter + Reset.
You should get this :

If not, I've no idea.

I already tried this, but it remains off. My PC can't detect the usb connection with it. All i got from it: the battery led is working, but that is because it isn't connected to the frimware I think.

axodox - as far as I know the blue boot/firmware flashing screen shouldn't be tied to the rom that is currently flashed on the device. You should always be able to get that screen to come up.

Did you pull the battery and reinsert it? You should be able to get that screen. Not sure if it matters but also make sure the device is charged.

axodox
9th November 2009, 09:30 PM
It's fully charged. I also tried to remove the battery, but that doesn't work either. Maybe it has a backup battery or something like that? If the flashing program could be overwritten, that would be very dangerous. But if it is possible, than I have a chance that without special hardware, I can not bring it back to life.

Just to be sure : You double check the hold button ?

The hold button is in the right position. But thanks for the idea.

May be it's the battery door button.
If your are french language compliant : see here (http://forum.hardware.fr/hfr/gsmgpspda/PDA/topic-unique-mypal-sujet_4_72.htm#t414699) (or you can just look at pictures).

Thanks. But I was one of the first people, who discovered the solution for this problem (and sent it to vip asus forums) :). I don't want to steal this thread from its original subject. I will try to repair my PDA on weekend, but now I have a lot to do.

Thanks for your help.

PS: Maybe this ROM is dangerous for 636N devices. I am intrested if someone can (dis)prove this (hopefully without bricking a PDA).

This rom is designed for Asus mypal a626, Asus mypal a686, and Asus mypal a696 ONLY. The A636n is a separate device with hardware different from the 3 devices mentioned above.
