How to port Android?

The specific device here is diamond 2, but just in general, what is involved?
I am not talking about running someone's kernel image through haret and hoping that it will boot. If I want to start from scratch, where should I start? Any links to any documentation?

And where can I gain this experience? Is there a place for me to start? I have done a bit of programming, just never tried changing/customizing the kernel
