Development has been integrated with the new rootfs.
Please see the thread here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=584707
New version coming soon:
Version 2.3 info:
-Newer simplified setup, whether you use a partition or not you will use the same files;
- fixed copying issues that were stopping some Donut builds from working. All builds should now work file.
-there are no additional files unlike previous builds.
- support for a data partition as well.
- supports all phones that the rootfs is supporting, kaiser vogue diamond etc.
Version 2.2 info;
updated for better data file backup naming.
updated to support donut
updated to support wifi (thanks enate for this)
Version 2 info;
On boot it will prompt you to boot the new recovery image, if you press a key it will load the recovery image, (the first boot you must do this to install the system) if not it will boot as normal.
If you have a system.sqsh on your sd card it will prompt you to install to your ext2 partition
- after installing the system it will move it to /sdcard/installedsystem/installedsystem.sqsh
- it will move your data file to /sdcard/datafilebackup/data$date
and create a new one. After the inital boot you can reboot and copy back your data file again.
There is one caveat that was pointed out to me today. Do not change systems twice in one day unless you don't care about your data. Because it creates the data file based on date it will overwright the old one.
Why not data to? Well our current data.img solution is awesome for backing it up.
What's coming;
Native support for update.zip's from the dream themes forum.
Menu support with several different usefull options for setting up android (this is proving to be tough but I'm working on it)
here it is!

Well looks like I'm not in the closed beta, but I'm looking forward to this with great excitement. With the loss of Zen, it's good to have you back and active on this stuff again. This wouldn't happen to be Android running natively on our little wonder-units would it? :D

Technically, Android doesnt run "native" on any device. You don't have to port a device to android..just the linux kernel to get api's to work. I know your refering to booting android on our faster but much smaller enternal flash but the speed difference would be minimal and we would be confinded to smaller builds. I think it has to do with a memory limitation in android from the dalvik vm it uses. I'm not 100% sure on what im talking about but this is the impression ive had for android for a while. Please enlighten me if I have missed something..

It's been stated before and I'll state it again, the speed of the nand (internal memory) on the vogue is very slow. Making android boot from the nand would be a step backwards... What I'm hoping I've got it a step forwards

Interesting.
I really don't understand why the internal NAND is so slow. Windows Mobile runs just fine from NAND, so why would running Android from it be any different?
Alternatively, it seems that a flashable Android would be much more convenient, and permanent.
I'm very curious to know what you're working on, mssmison.

Duel booting would a better option in my opinion..wm is just a better mini PC OS(Windows) and Android is a better phone/internet OS . This makes our devices even more versitle then phones just running android. I dont get how just having android would makes things better..since we just manually boot android instead of it booting once the phones is turned on...how about a linux bootloader that launches before wm does..and a graphical UI to choose from the two OS's

My understanding is that there isn't enough room to dual-boot both WinMo and Android from the NAND on the Vogue.
You could possibly put the bootloader in NAND and run WinMo and Android from storage, but that sorta defeats the purpose.

I can't use GPartED live because I'm on a HP laptop that they say not to use it on. I run Fedora Core 11. The only way that my laptop can see my phone is if I have my phone ready for tethering. Otherwise I never get a filesystem pop up. I always end up having to boot windows to put new files onto my phone.

You can either use a micro sd adapter or boot your phone to windows and connect it to the computer with usb. Your phone should not be in android when you are partitioning it.

For those of us that live in a Windows free house, I would suggest using the gParted Live CD (http://gparted.sourceforge.net/) to partition for the ext2 bit. Then, I use a neat little tool that lets MacOS see ext2 partitions (http://sourceforge.net/projects/ext2fsx/) to play with it. Hope this helps :)

I'd finally had a chance to play with this after my D&D session last night... mssmision, you are the freakin' man. This is the greatest idea since running Android on the Vogue to begin with. I've tried it now with a few different builds and everything but the vanilla donut that zenulator upped works incredibly well (not sure why but it keeps looping at the Android screen. I'll have to double check my default.txt). Very fast, very smooth, I haven't seen a force close or wait message once. I'm running vilords "Still Evil" Ion bundle from August, it's so much faster I almost got whiplash from it :)

just first boot, after that it'll boot the partition like normal. if you ever want to update to a different build just copy over the system.sqsh to the sd and re-run the utility.
As for latest Donut not working, it's possible that the correct files aren't included in my rootfs.

the nice thing about the sqsh filesystem is that it protects the SD card since it is a read only filesystem. Is there going to be an issue with writes wearing out the SD card using an ext2 filesystem?
I seem to remember issues in the early days of android on vogue when the SD card was accessed more directly, that they were prone to getting corrupted/destroyed, perhaps due to too many write cycles.
enatefox
4th November 2009, 08:57 PM
You won't have any more writes to it normally than you do now. /data and / are rw and they get more written to them. ext2 doesn't really write a lot especially with the noatime flag. Even with ext3 it doesn't really impact life a whole lot. Generally /system is not touched by Android. Plus / and /system are mounted ro initially

it is mounted as ro, and was before squash when we used cramfs. squash was used for the size of downloading and it was reported to be a bit faster than cramfs. This is best of both, downloads are still squash so they're small and the system parition is ro.

I wonder if using an uncompressed file loop device would provide much of the benefit of an actual partitioned ext2 filesystem? I use a lot of virtual machines on my computer, and the performance of virtual file systems, which are essentially uncompressed file loop devices, is surprisingly good. Maybe the best of both worlds: ease of use and good performance? But perhaps it is not comparable given the cpu/memory limitations of the vogue.

1. use your linux to partition your sd card to have a system ext2 partition, basically just make a 200MB ext2 parition on your card.
is it possible to use the linux emulator built into some of the releases to partition and format the microSD card while running android, or is there any other way to do it, by have the phone connected via a usb cable running windows mobile to format it, I don`t have a microSD card reader or adapter.

Really your best bet is to use a Linux LiveCD... there are some tools for windows to manipulate/format ext2fs, but you'd be much happier with the LiveCD method. There are some links in the previous posts to get you pointed in the right direction.

Okay, I think I can cover everything. If not, ask:
You need to make sure the FAT partition is the first on the card, then the ext2
You need to make sure you format correctly
If it's boot looping or getting to the notification bar but no home screen you are probably SOL unless you use a premade data.img. They are on GC for you, I personally uploaded one for Sprint which will work for Cupcake. Never had a problem with that and Donut so it should "just work"
If you have read only on /system or / then Android is doing its job. Here's how you mount it read-write with ADB or terminal:
mount -o remount,rw /system
when you're done breaking things:
mount -o remount,ro /system
**EDIT, some images don't have the proper root permission so you get "permission denied" when you type "su" but you can override that by using "/bin/su" instead as it's incorrectly set to allow anyone to access root. The update mssmison uploaded has that fixed though and so do the images I posted but just in case, that's the fix.
And how's Donut and wifi working out with the updated rootfs.img?

You know how to use ADB right? Can you check logcat and see if dexopt is looping? Should flood stdout with "zomg this app changed, let me collect the certs" and keep going until acore or another core system process crashes at which point the whole boot sequence should loop again. If that's the case, I can fix it with a premade data.img. If not, please post it so we can get that fixed.

I don't have a linux machine. I swap out files using an SD card adapter..... I can't gather a logcat. I'm trying to use this build with the data file I had with it before the new installation method.... could that be a problem?

thanks for all ur work. in doing this i have a 6gb card.. i partitioned a gig under ext2 and 5 as fat32.. when i plug it into my phone, under windows mobile, it asks to format and won't allow me to access my card without doing so. when i format it removes the partitions all together. any ideas?
i used ubuntu and a gnome partition editor to do so, running in vmware.

TheKartus, with ADB you run logcat against the phone-- it's independent of your computer. "adb logcat" will print to the screen, the other option is to use ddms from the SDK which gives you a full debugger for the phone.
Just to clarify what jamezelle said, you need the FAT partition to be the first one on the card for Windows to recognize it. With gparted, that would be the left. With fdisk there is no direction, only awesome.
Media not found issues are build specific, not related to this thread. You can try to use the Media Scanner in spare parts (or dev tools?).

Anyone having boot loop issues please attach a logcat or there's nothing I can really do. ADB isn't hard to set up and the SDK has ddms which is a full GUI you can point and click to save a logcat.

I really feel like a noob here, but can someone walk me through the partitioning process? I have tried the following: run parted in Kubuntu, make one 7.5 gig fat32 partition on my sd card, then I am failing on my attempts to make a 500 MB ext2 partition. I run the mkfs command and follow the dialog to make partition 2 as a ext2 partition but when it is done and I type "print" it shows partition 1 as my fat32 partition but partition 2 has no file system listed. What am I doing wrong?
Thanks

EDIT: the first package had an initrid in it. I took that out of my recycle bin. Is it necessary?
EDIT2: I have ddms running and the device is showing up as ??????????? and online but I can't get logcat to run. It just keeps saying failed.

just a feedback.
First a background: I had downloaded donut into my vogue and had run successfully. Surprisingly it didn't have any forced closes. :) (earlier i had tried hero senseui and just gave up on it). Anyways i realized i had changed the donut.user.conf to user.conf. I dont know what impact it has on andriod. I assume i was looking at donut??
Anyways, i have 2gb sdcard. have about 750mb of wm6.5 data on it. so, when i ran v2.2, it was trying to back my data.img file as well as system.sqsh. It didn't have enough to backup and the booting process came to a halt at a $prompt. :(
I already backedup my data image in my hdd. So i am thinking, if you could give a choice to backup or not, it will be useful for some.

It is definitely normal for Windows to not see the Linux side of the card. Put all of your files on the Fat32 (Windows) side of the card, stuff gets copied to the Linux side on first boot. It is 100% worth it!

Your trying to run a donut build right? They currently have issues with this method. The only donut build you can use is the one on Plemen's thread. That should boot up fine. Otherwise try an Ion or cupcake build. Or Hero.

Finally tried this and it's awesome! I'm a Linux n00b but I have some experience with GPartEd so I opted to use it instead of Paragon to partition the card.
Also, I wanted to note that I was able to format the card while it was in my phone. If you use a ROM that has the USB mode selector widget (e.g., NFSFAN) then you can set the mode to mass storage, leave USB connected, boot into GPartEd, and perform the necessary partitioning/formatting. I didn't try but you can probably connect the phone after the Livecd has booted, select USB, and rescan devices in GPartEd.
I'm running the jesterblur build from a while back and the difference is remarkable! Thanks mssmison!

Hey guys, I have been running this with 200mb swap file and runs quite smooth! I love it.
By the way, how's everyone's experience with Market after moving to this method. For me, it shows it's downloading but never does.

Hi mssmison, i tried your method running on my kasier. It could get into android and use phone function on my kasier. But It could not log in any wifi network (although could scan and see wifi network). i use donut build (with normal method, it could log in wifi network). Could you advise me to get wifi on kaiser working properly.
P/s: your method running so fast on my kaiser, hihi.

Did you see the Wireless Options screen to see if it's trying to obtaing an IP address? I this problem. It never gets an IP address. I had to enter the configuration manually :(

I don't have or support a kaiser phone. Enatefox made the changes for wifi, ask him.

I know my Kaiser is unsupported but thanks so much mssmison! Builds FLY on my Kaiser, Sense is finally usable! The last piece to the puzzle will be the upcoming RIL. Amazing what you guys are doing with these devices.

I had been using system-tmo-ota-drc92.sqsh prior to starting using your new system here. I just can't seem to get it to work. I got the system posted earlier in this thread to work, but my old data file wouldn't work with it that I had all set up the way I wanted. Hoping the next update fixes that, or we get 2.0 soon. Either way, it's running amazingly fast with the system image in this thread. Not sure if I have compcache on or off, and have no swap partition. Is it running faster with a swap partition running as well or no? Thanks

if you use zen's last donut build it work with those old files. The new files however will work 100%

any benefit for going with an ext3 instead of ext2 partition? Is any body using a linux-swap?

ext3 can actually be slower than ext2 because of some overhead stuff so stick with 2. I really recommend to try and stay away from swap when possible, the donut/rogers/ion builds don't need it, only the builds that are designed for higher amounts of ram.

yeah for a hero build you'll probably want to use swap, I recommend a file that is deleted and recreated on every boot to try and avoid corrupting your sdcard.

I am happily using linux-swap partition with senseHero 1.3.3, I keep switching between that and compcache, can't decide what I like better. Although it's not clear that swap partition is supported in newest rootfs, I'll have to look
