I have an Alpine which I want to use only as a book reader. Is there a way to underclock it as I just want to make it run for as long as possible?

Have you already made backlight low as possible?
This option works for me just fine (I use it as bookreader too).

Just done that, will see how I go. I'm getting a high cap battery, but don't want to take the bulky charger cradle with me on holiday. Thanks for that, I'm dying to buy an ebook reader, just can't justify the cost.

Also make sure there aren't any other programs working in memory, as they drain battery power too.
Other than running it on mains power I don't think you can do anything else that hasn't been mentioned already.

search for xcpuscalar - you can underclock it then to 104 MHz
alco dont forget to switch off all of the connection possibilities by using flightmode

Thanks, forgot about flight mode. I'll have a go with xcpuscalar.
Much appreciated.
