View Full Version : Things I hate about Windows Mobie 6.5 and the T-Mobile Dash

Sticky this. Add it to your favorites. I know a lot that is said here will hit home with a lot of you. You may be thinking it but today I am saying it.
----------------------------------------------------------------------+

T-Mobile Dash (HTC S620):

The JOGGR bar flips out at random and scrolls uncontrollably. This carries on until the phone is locked and then unlocked. This is present even when the JOGGR is set to adjust the volume (and this has been present since WinMo 6, maybe even 5).
The ear piece tends to cake up with dust.
The radio/phone never seems loud enough.
The phone can be very slow.
The phone can, and has, shut off while sending an MMS message or using Wifi.

Windows Mobile 6.5:

I dislike that the SMS bubble pops up while you're composing a message.
I really dislike that hitting the Dismiss option does nothing.
I hate that I have to click View to get rid of the text bubble.
I am actually quite livid that I have to then open my Drafts folder to continue the message that the text bubble interrupted.
It makes me laugh just to have another text bubble come up while I am trying to finish the text in the Draft folder only to have to repeat the entire process and hope not to get interrupted again.
I don't like that sometimes the SMS history messes up and when I do "view" the message I have to scroll down and select "Newer" until I get to the message (and then quite possibly another text will come in prompting the bubble).
Often times the ROM is slow loading the proper keyboard configuration so when starting a new text or replying to one rather than getting the letter "S" one will get the number "4," etc. This doesn't happen if one lets the phone sit a moment and fully load the text message however. Shouldn't happen at all really.
The need to use Task Manager or Celetask to end an application. When I hit the "End Call" button that is IT for that application until I open it again. I don't get why Microsoft does not understand this. It's PHONE, NOT a COMPUTER (so-to-speak (I want it to be more like a phone than a computer since there are no "exits" or "close buttons" on the apps)). A good example would be Internet Explorer (I use Skyfire but this is just an example). The only way to close IE on this or any version of WinMo is to use Task Manager or CeleTask! Come on!

I have flashed my phone with this ROM just as any of you would have. I think that some problems stem from how the ROM was cooked. Especially when it comes to the text bubbles. I have looked in Automatic Keylock and another place on the phone I cannot recall at this time and have done what I thought would disable the bubbles but to no avail.

If someone could chime out here and just tell me how to turn those blasted things off I'd be so happy. There are a lot of things I like about the phone but the things that are wrong with it are just so deeply rooted into it's very foundation, it's very being that to make it right Windows would have to be completely redone and the phone itself would need it to.

I know the HTC S620 is old now. I don't plan on going to the 3G Dash. I believe I will be moving on to another phone but I have no money to do that right now and I needed this off of my chest.

Please, post your grievances with the phone and the OS. I cannot be alone here! :D

You really seem to hate that bubble, it is not part of WinMo 6.5, its an addon software which ookba cooked in the ROM, SMS Bubbles u can disable under Tools > SMSBubbles Settings/Disable.

The phone u can make it faster by disabling the skin, also disabling mortscript from starting up. Skin u can disable form HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Security\Phone\Skin make Enabled 0

Exiting apps, some do, some dont, most of the time its harmless, but sometimes mem eater soft do slow ur system down, IE6 in Official WinMo 6.5 have an Exit button, MS listened and added it, but IE6 will be very slow on the Dash.

I just want to say you are right but the thing with making a perfect running Tweaked s621 u have too hard reset a few times til you get every single file on without any issues once you stablize everything the s621 has no issues The newest Kavana 6.1 build is the best way to go i found the EV6.5 isnt quite ready for the s621 yet its good but u can't mess with it too much like mad tweaking it with stuff, Overall the 6.1 Kavana Rom is sick with NRG etc's help lag free and is real nice even at 174 MHz underclocked no freeze all day etc remember like ive said i have all 6.1 modz and it took me many hard resets and setting up's to be where my s621 is today, cheers Rock On XDA Friends if i can call ya all That :)

Thanks for this. I always over look something like this. I believe that may be the place that I said I couldn't remember. ^^;

What would be the outcome of disabling the mortscript? What is it's purpose and what would I be missing out on by disabling it? Also, when you say "skin..." what would change about the look of the phone?

I find the bubble annoying and it was one of the first things I disabled when I flashed to this ROM, heh.

I agree -- the Excalibur is a little older, but it can still perform pretty well. I like having multiple applications running in the background so I don't have to restart my web experience just to reply to a text message. Though I guess if it saved its state like an iPhone, it wouldn't matter... but I think that sort of functionality is beyond the device. IE6 mobile does actually have a Menu -> Exit option, but it's just WAAAAY too slow for use on an Excalibur.

I also disable the Jog except for changing volume while in calls. Makes it a little more stomach-able. Auto Keylock is a lifesaver, for me, heh.

I agree that the phone's quiet and that the hole fills with dust. Annoying, but not so much so that I hate the phone.

I actually *do* want a Dash 3G as I really like the form factor of the Dash but really want the gobs of extra RAM and data speed of the new device. :)

Gotta say for all the quirks, the Dash is amazing phone, i use a Tilt as main phone with my custom ROM to which i'm very fond of ;) but still have times i use the Dash especially when surfing as the keyboard is so lush to use and the display is pristine, yes it's old but still so functional, after all it is what you make it!!! :D

How much time do you think this could last? I'm talking about the whole dash rom updates and all the other amazing things that keep our beloved dash alive. The phone is 3 years old, where do you think will be the peak of its functionality to the average users...where you can say.... My God!...my dash is useless ...

I think our dash will go for a lot longer than anybody will think.. this dash came out way ahead of itself release i believe was July 2006 but this phone didnt become popular s621 not s620 til about 07 early, i dint think i even remember people useing smartphones in early 07 lol.. but in my opinon with 6.1 + on this s62X is gonna last for awhile more..

I hope so, this thread has hit the nail in things that most of us hate about WM and the dash, probably we will have another thread in the near future "things I hate about Android and T mobile dash" lol...:D

I just love HTC devices :D:D Give me a spv c550 or a TP2 and i wouldn't moan, well maybe a little "to myself" until i got it tweaked... ;)

Lets face it we could have symbian phones to which are not very tweakable and nowhere to spend our time :(

I'm just a realist :D:D "said in comedy"

I jus think u gotta get your phone tweaked to the max on a new rom, get er stablized good and the s621 is all u can ask for pretty much atleast still meets 09 standards just bout for a smartphone besides 3G and GPS but me myself i use PURE wi-fi, tho i think this should protain more to the HTC Ozone with 3G, gonna be a fun phone to tweak.

Right again amigo...Lol..but why HTC has that peculiarity??? I love HTC phones.. Maybe is this forum by itself that "transmits" that adrenaline or addiction to go beyond and explore the limits of these phones can give us by tweaking them. I used to have Moto Q previously with WM 6 also...but a headache to tweak'em and not to much places to go. As far there are people like yourself and many other chefs we will be standing here to see what's next and keep tweaking our phones and making unlimited posts...:)

lol the freaking Keyboard thing in SMS is the same with the official T-mobile WM6.0 hit A to soon and you get vibrate....The T-mobile Rom had WAY more fualts then the cooked ones.
Like before my Dash would lock up about once-twice a week.

Other then that and the Dust in the speaker i have not found ANYTHING bad about the dash especially seeing as its a 3 year old phone.

Sure its a little slow with WM6.5 but COME ON! new HTC phones have 512Mhz and 128+ Ram
The dash however has 201MHZ and 64RAM
Doesnt the touchpro2 have 288RAM?
And have you seen the "coming soon" things 1,000MHZ and 512Ram?!?!
-shrug-
i guess some people just expect more out of this old phone..lol

im with styles i <3 my Dash

Google Maps-My location on Edge/GPRS its within 2,200 meters and on Wi-fi its 100-300 meters And usually it finds me within a city block:eek:
Pretty freakin good for a phone without a GPS antenna if you ask me

3G is only as good as your network coverage and T-mobile isnt to big YET so Wi-fi/hotspots will out Range 3G.

Granted a 3G network of up to 7.2MPS  would be nice and GPS would be very nice for real time trip mapping(a BIG plus for motorcyclists)

Yeah we lucky in the UK as HSDPA is pretty much covered everywhere, you don't half notice the speed difference when going from Tilt to Dash, never had any luck with Google maps puts me out in the sticks aprx 5 miles from current location, can see the new fad of updating but for the tiny increase that the Maple has i don't think is worth the outlay, if i was going to spend money then the option would be a PPC with hardware keyboard "hypothetically i have no Tilt" first of all you get the best of both worlds, the community is also larger with regards PPC's so more choice of ROMs, software devs pretty much focus on PPC's so on a SP your missing out on alot of the dev world... And just far more pimpable :D

Maybe because we have such excellent T-Mobile coverage here with multiple towers all over the place. I was shocked the first time I used Google Maps and it immediately zeroed in on My Location and it was spot on.

I impressed some friends recently, I was at one's house out in the suburbs, we wanted to check if the nearest Home Depot had an item. I spoke to the Bing app "Home Depot" and it pops up with a list of the nearest locations very accurately, I scroll down to the phone number of that store, click "call" and I'm connected. How easy and neat is that, and on an "ancient" phone? :D

Bing is cool But everytime i used Live or Bing on my phone *before the flashes*
it would either lock up or just crash.

Google was the only Map App i could use....and its all i still use.
Plus its image load time is faster then Bing;)

Yep my comparative was with peeps moving to Maple i'm very fond of SP's too but i'd also like to have a choice of ROMs to flash and software to which the SP lacks especially in the Development forum ;) Looking into a Fuze @ mo as TP2 is out reach but my next venture is a second Kaiser so as i don't have to keep flashing my device "when building ROMs" as always cook personal build after release "since then all my software can be cooked in" :)

My relationship with the beloved dash was love/hate at first..I must confess that If I woud be still using it with the crappy WM 6 I would be looking for some other phone. But the wm6.5 (lovebabyjing version) and my S621 seems to be the ideal couple...and I love them:D

If you have installed any application and you don’t like it then I would best suggest removing or uninstalling that particular application. There is no such feature called bubble when composing a message in Windows Mobile 6.5. It is the application that is annoying you. Composing message on Windows Mobile 6.5 is easy.

Try the HTC HD2 with winmo 6.5 and you will know the improved functionality of the new OS by Microsoft. Excellent UI coupled with smart and smooth browsing makes this the most deirable phone ever. Its not too hard on your pockets as well!

Windows Mobile is dead.. the only way is for Microsoft to start all over again, from zero and make a NEW WM Ultrafast kickass version.. hey if they made Windows 7 much better than Vista they can do it with WM too.
